~~~ This Review is Entirely Based on Customer Service ~~~ Let me start by saying that I have been a member of Ruby HIll's Gem Society for about 5 years. It was one of my first winery visits out here in Livermore and the first club I ever joined. I loved being a member. I am cancelling that membership TODAY. Ok, this is going to be a lengthy rant - consider yourself warned. Over the course of the past year, customer service has steadily declined. The wine is delicious and the location beautiful - especially the addition of the back "members only" patio. However, the last few times I have brought in friends to visit and taste - bragging about the winery and their selection - I have left only to be embarrassed by the ungracious, unkind, uncourteous staff behind the counter. This last weekend took the cake! I brought my newly engaged friend and her fiance to check out RH as a potential wedding venue. Having been a wedding coordinator myself, I knew this place might be a good fit. We did arrive later in the day on Valentine's day (I know, probably a poor choice of days) - and guests were arriving for a wedding ceremony. I approached the staff member "guarding" the main entrance and very politely asked if it would at all be possible for a potential couple to "peek" inside. Her response was a very curt and short response basically saying "No F@&$ing way. Get out of here." (Ok, not exactly her words - but I will tell you that was how I felt and that was her tone.) Let me also say that I can empathize. If it were my wedding, I would not want strangers walking in. However, I also don't see the harm in just looking - from the door, body outside, visually glancing at the inside - and there is a way that you can say it. Simply: "I'm really sorry, but only guests of the bride and groom are allowed" would totally work. No problem and we would walk away with an "at least we tried" attitude. But nope. Not her. She was RUDE. Not a great impression for potential clients of the staff that would potentially be dealing with THEIR guests. Ok, fine. We decided to go inside and taste instead. The members section being at capacity, I found us a spot dead center in the middle of the main bar with just enough space for all three of us. We Waited. And Waited. And waited some more. Staff members rushed or meandered on by. Some made eye contact and blatantly looked away. Others just flat out ignored us altogether. Great impression everyone. Simply great! As it was fast approaching 4:45 pm, I was worried that we would be "rushed" once we finally got some service. And after 5 individual staff members ignored us entirely, my friend's fiancee decided to get CJ's attention as he was approaching us (also ignoring us). When asked for a little service, his immediate response: "We're really busy right now. It's going to be a few minutes." Uhm, ok. We HAVE been waiting, but alright. And again - what's with the attitude?? We tried explaining that we understood that they were busy (we do have eyes after all), but would still appreciate simply being acknowledged. CJ began arguing with us!! All I was trying to say is that it would be nice to not be ignored. We had already waited about 10 minutes. That's just ridiculous! Finally, I made the call and we decided to just leave. THEN, CJ retorts with "I'll tell you what. I will STOP helping these other people so that I can help YOU. What would you like?" Are you EFFING kidding me?! That's the response we get? That's how they treat customers? MEMBERS?? How HARD is it to put a glass and a menu in front of people, say "give me just a couple minutes and I will be right with you" and then finish with the other guests and come back while we've had time to peruse the menu? How. HARD. IS. IT? Apparently, the answer is Very. How hard is it to be treated with RESPECT? I wasn't rude or out of line. I didn't insult or curse. And I have been a MEMBER for 5 years! That is FIVE years of committing to purchasing wine every 3 months - purchases that started at about $40 a quarter and have steadily increased to about $65-70 a quarter. Five years of purchasing several CASES of wine. Five years of bringing in other people that have also become members. Five years as a devoted member that has always included this venue as a stop for all my wine tasting adventures (hint: I have a LOT of wine tasting adventures). Ok, maybe it was 4 years... or 6? Either way. The staff members no longer interact in a friendly and personal manner. This venue is 100% all about money. Granted, money makes the world go round. And while my puny little 5 year (give or take a year), quarterly commitment may not be much to them, it meant A LOT to me. I am about the experience and memories. And when life took a turn and I had to cut back on expenses, I cut out all other wine club memberships... save for this one. After this last experience though, they can keep their wine. Finally made the trip literally around the corner to check this place out. It's awesome! So great to have a beautiful winery within walking distance of my house. OK Let's not kid each other. I will probably never walk here but at least I know I can walk home!;-) The building and tasting room is gorgeous- reminiscent of some of the more commercial wineries in Sonoma/Napa. This will also be my new go-to place for gifts-they have italian pottery, various wine gadgets(I collect these...ok... well I go winetasting and then have to buy everything in the tasting room so I have alot of these) The winemaker is Chris Graves (formerly of Wente and then Tamas Estates) and his specialty is italian style wines. I like the Ruby Hill wines better than Tamas Estates but obviously Chris is working with different grapes, most of which are not grown locally. All of the wines here were extremely easy to drink. Smooth with no major tannins to be found. I'm not a Merlot fan but I bought boat loads because it is so smooth ( like a meritage or red table wine) that it should have wide appeal for fam and friends-and the price makes it perfect for summer bbqs. My favorites were the Cab and the Pinot Noir for my private drinkable stash. I got to do a barrel tasting of the Petite Syrah- it was good but was a little too sweet for me. I enjoyed the Port with the wine infused chocolate bits. It didn't have that heavy raisin taste-was pretty light. They have a wine club (The Gem Society) and, besides getting wine shipped quarterly, members get to taste in the private tasting area (a big perk on those busy weekends!) ...I am doing some shuffling around of my wine clubs (I seem to collect these too) so that I can join. As a Gem Society Member we were welcomed by a private attendant to our group of 10. We were told that we could pick some select wines to taste as not all were available on the list (??) Ok, this was fine as this was our last stop in our LIMO and we let them know that we were truly only interested in the reds as our group are Red fans. Close to the end of our tasting a woman behind the counter (who had not been serving us) instructed myself and another person of my party in a snooty and unprofessional manner that "Due to ABC laws we could not purchase wine." I work in an industry where I am TIPS certified and I understand what the ABC laws are. "If a person is drunk but will not be driving, why can't we continue to serve them alcohol?" (Ok so we had a LIMO and we weren't being asked to have another tasting, in fact we were getting ready to leave and wanted to purchase what we had tasted) "Unfortunately driving under the influence isn't the only danger associated with being drunk. Fights, walking into traffic, etc. can often times be a result and tragedy of intoxication. By law, an employee may not allow a drunk patron to consume alcohol on the premises. " -ABC Even if the premises felt that someone in our party was intoxicated this was not verbalized to us, instead the harsh, rude woman didn't want to sell us the bottles of wine. I personally had already requested 4 bottles of the Cab Reserve in which I did not purchase, along with myself and another person have cancelled our Membership. 10 people went into this facility with the intention of enjoying some tastings and purchasing wine and all of us came out empty handed and a sour taste in our mouths on the rudeness of how we were treated at this Winery. I've told everyone that I work with, my friends and family that this facility has lost business due to the woman to was unprofessional and rude. read more

If you are looking for a great, casual & welcoming winery with exceptional service-save yourself the drive to Napa(and the ridiculous tasting fees!) and come here instead. Reasonable price for wine and tastings. Great patio for outdoors tastings and the service was impeccable! The manager checked in on us a few times to welcome us and make sure all was well and it made the afternoon special. Set us up in a comfy outdoor couch section with a heater & even brought over an additional chair for us. Some wineries can have a bit of a snobby vibe, but not this place, although they know their wine and are super knowledgeable-they are also very nice people and were able to give us additional recommendations for next stops including their partner/sister winery- Rubinos which is a 3 minute drive down the street & also very nice. But Ruby Hills gave us the personal/VIP treatment & we loved every minute & every drop of our tastings! Thank you for making the afternoon such a lovely experience! read more

We had some downtime before meeting up with the Fam for dinner. Been meaning to come back here to check out the winery after we held our wedding reception at Ruby Hill nearly 2 years ago! I love this area. We weren't sure if they would still be serving considering they close at 5:30 and we arrived at around 4:45, but Bill was happy to accommodate us. He had a great sense of humor and chit chatted with us while we were tasting the wines. $5 for 11 tastings is not bad at all! We didn't come in thinking we were going to purchase any bottles but ended up really enjoying the wines offered. We narrowed it down to one white & one red bottle to purchase (the champagne and the cabernet sauvignon). Prices are very reasonable too. They even waived the tasting fee bc we purchased the bottles! Would definitely include this winery the next time i go wine tasting in livermore! (My other favorites are Concannon & Wente). read more

I really liked this place. I came here with my parents and fiance for some wine tasting this holiday season, which is free to members. They like this place because it comes with the fewest obligations in terms of wines that you are required to purchase. I enjoyed the selections and they were very generous when I asked for a second swig of a few of them. My parents assure me that their barrel nights are to die for: members just bring glasses directly to barrels and fill 'er up! I loved the servers: professional, but casual and approachable. Most of them knew my dad and my dad's friend, and were concerned about how the latter man's chemo treatments have been going (they're going very well, btw :-D). Servers were quick to stop and chat whenever they could, and kept the cheese and crackers abundant. There's nothing to complain about. It wasn't too crowded, the bathrooms were adorable (and clean!). And the final ports comes in a dark chocolate glass. SWOON!! read more

Good wine, but doesn't respect Wine Industry Standards. Working in the wine industry allows certain trade discounts at each winery. Most wineries in Livermore, CA offer a trade discount for a tasting and even specific varietals. I was surprised there is no discount at this location (given how its an area with very high salaries demographically). For those looking for an 'expensive luxury experience', this is your way to go. I would heartily recommend small mom and pop wineries like Three Steves or Retzcalf. They respect the industry and also give you more personalized service. read more

Needs to work on customer service. Love the location, setting, building and all the gifts for sale. Chardonnay is delicious ad well as the sparkling wine. Our friends are members and recently we were at the bar to purchase some wine and also have another glass. The guy kept saying "just a minute" while he was pouring another customer the whole time. It's not only what you say, but how you say it. Then one of the ladies finally came up to us and said it was too late for pouring. She was nice and we told her about the man who wouldn't help us. We just joined Ruby Hill Winery's "Gem Society" and I must say the wine and location are pretty impressive but the low rating is due the lack of customer service available and an abundance of uncalled for hoity-toitiness. If it wasn't for the good wine and convenience, I wouldn't even think twice in canceling our membership. We just moved to the Pleasanton area and wanted to venture to the nearby wineries as we have been to the Napa and Healdsburg area plenty but I think it's worth the drive to Healdsberg if I had to choose base on the service alone. In particular, if you go tasting, stay away from a man named Eric. He was rude to my parents (recently joined members who persuaded us to join) and friends (first timers who have been to other wineries in the area) and on both occasions I happen to be assisted by him and he was not helpful or courteous at all. He expects for us to know about the details of their wines and wine history in general as though we are experts. Umm.....correct me if I am wrong, but isn't that your job as the one pouring it on the other side of the counter? We are there to have a good time, drink wine, and learn more about wine each time we come. One of my friends had asked him if he had any recommendations and he responds, "No." (note that there was no smile or laughter following the response) Isn't that when he should ask questions on what she likes in a wine to provide recommendations to taste? Another winery you may want to consider going to, although it's a bit further, is Concannon. The experience we got there was 10, if not 20 times better. Plus there is plenty of room to picnic. I'm going to give Ruby Hill another chance at our next pick up trip but I will be giving it a fair chance by avoiding Eric, so I can have an opportunity for some (hopefully) improved, if not great service. read more

We went wine tasting on Sunday, 7/7/13 for our daughter's 21st birthday. We had a group of approximately 15 people. Ruby Hill Winery was our 3rd winery stop. An appointment was made to have a tasting in a private room. "Eric", a middle aged man, who obviously is unhappy with his life, was the person who poured our wine! Absolutely rude, unfriendly and rude again! There are not words strong enough to describe his RUDENESS! Never smiled one time during our entire time. At one point, my 27-year old daughter took her glass up for a pour. He rudely said to her, "You look like your cross-eyed!" When I heard this, I politely walked up and asked him why he would make such a comment like that. He told me it was his job. Now, I understand his "job" (you're a middle aged man who still wears a name tag to work) BUT.....I think he could have handled himself more professionally. When I mentioned to him his unprofessionalism, he stuck to his game, "She does look cross-eyed!" Now, let me be perfectly honest with you...my daughter is NOT cross-eyed, nor was she buzzed or drunk! Needless to say, I AM a professional and knew I was not going to get anywhere with this person, so I politely stood my ground and walked away. Please do NOT give your business and/or money to a company that does not care about the type of people they hire. There are thousands of unemployed people in the Bay Area that would kill to work there, I'm sure. read more

Service was abysmal. The individual helping my fiancé and I would get distracted and walk off with no warning. The wines were over oaked, with no real nuance. The winner of the day was the Sangiovese, which was best described as 'eh'. The grapeful varieties (red and white) were saccharine and one note. Also worth mentioning, the tasting costs between $5-7.50 per flight however they won't comp you unless you buy 2+ bottles. Seriously?? That's asinine to me. My third visit here. An elegant, luxurious winery, a little fancy for Livermore Valley, and not especially dog friendly, all of which made me back the car up for the next stop on my first visit. Here's what's great about Ruby Hill: * The setting is spectacular, a little above the valley on the slopes, a mediterranean villa style (somewhat faux), but a truly beautiful setting. * If you do have a dog, you can carry him to a courtyard, sit out front, or if it's not too busy, the wine club member area, and they are happy enough to help you with your tasting there. In fact, the courtyard next to the tasting room is probably the best part, a shaded, gentle area that gets a nice breeze even on a hot day, you can lounge on a table there, buy a bottle of wine inside and some deli items, and just enjoy life. * The wine is very, very good. They have several levels and brands, but the mid and high labels would hold their own in Napa Valley at twice the price, or a restaurant at 3-4X. They are complex, balanced, tasty full wines that are a joy to drink, and you can buy a whole bottle for $25-45 dollars and enjoy it right there. Some are ready to drink right now, some will age, some you should decant. Ive tried maybe ten of their red wines so far and there wasn't a single miss. I brought a few bottles home because even at a good wine store in San Francisco you would have a hard time finding a better wine for the price. * There is a meaningful history to the place. It's well over 100 years old, fell into disrepair and out of production, then got resurrected through a lot of effort and love. It's on the border of Wente, the granddady of Livermore wines. When you visit and drink here, you are supporting a connection to California wine history. read more

Ruby Hill was so great this last weekend! I set up a birthday party for my fiance and we had about 12 people. Other wineries wanted to charge us for a group that size but Ruby Hill welcomed us and let us use the names of three members in our group for a table reservation. Kathy, who was pouring our wine for the tasting, was very nice and accommodating to us all. Some people showed up later but she made sure that everyone got each wine they were pouring for the day. They set up our table inside since it was so hot but informed us that we could use the outside tables as well. I highly recommend Ruby Hill for your next party! read more

Oh Man! Somebody beat me to the first review of this place! Very upscale, very tasteful, but NOT SNOOTY in the slightest. I met the winemaker! Who'da thunk that lil ole' me bellying up to the huge dark wood bar would come face to face with the winemaker serving wine! A relatively young, handsome, and personable man, almost made me want to be single again! (almost) You can have fun debating the Anderson Valley Chard to the Livermore Valley Chard. I did. Two very distinctively different tastes, yet both very reasonably priced so if you can't decide take them both. They also have a small deli counter in the tasting room with packaged meats, cheeses, sodas, and crackers. If you forget the picnic they have it covered. Staff was friendly except I realized after the tasting that they never really explained the wine and just poured it for us. Decent selection of wines. Went in as a part of a group of friends. The guy who poured us our glasses for wine tasting was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Loved the Sauvignon Blanc and the Grapeful white. The Chardonnay was a bit too buttery and the Pinot Blanc was a bit too metallic tasting for my liking. Bought a bottle of the Sauvignon Blanc worth the price! Oh and their dessert wine is pretty darn good. Mix it with white chocolate and you almost taste strawberry shortbread! Brilliant. read more

What a great experience. This past week was my first time visiting Ruby Hill. We came on a shuttle bus for a bachelorette party with a total of 9 ladies. First off the winery is very pleasing to the eye and very well kept. We had a private tasting which came out to $15 pp much cheaper than what you would find in Napa. Helen was so sweet on the phone booking the tasting and Sue helped out throughout our 1 hr barrel room session. Everything moved along smoothly , the wines were ok. I'm not a huge fan of reds but the other girls seemed to like them. Sarah was a greeter and helped in the main tasting room but she really stood out to us. Very sweet demeanor and genuinely happy to have us there. They have a large store with all types of cute and unique items for the house and they even sell their special sauces they serve with pretzels. I believe they were Honey Mustard and a Raspberry Chipotle. We also hung out on their patio since our bus was having some mechanical problems. One of the girls bought a couple bottles and we played game and entertained ourselves. What a great place to be out if your bus breaks down. Will be returning for a wedding this Friday. Pet friendly. We went there on Christmas Eve for a wine tasting flight. We were sat quickly and even given the option to pick any table we wanted. We brought our puppy and they happily accommodated. The staff was extremely friendly and very knowledgeable about the wines we received. We were given ample notification that they were closing at 2:30pm for the holiday. read more

I did not expect to be wine tasting in Pleasanton but on Saturday when my friends wanted reasonable driving distance and weather, Yelp directed us to the vineyards of Pleasanton. Our first stop is Ruby Hill. It is a large venue with water fountains, large parking lots, and outdoor seating. The tastings range from $5-$10. We chose the reserved tasting that has a mix of red/whites. My favorite was the 2011 Chardonnay. It had a really nice floral/fragrant smell to it that I really enjoyed. It was not everyone's cup of tea (wine?) but others agreed on the Peacock Patch Zin. Last notes: nice seating area and clean bathrooms. read more

My fiance and I were next door at Casa Real looking for a wedding venue, and stopped into Ruby Hill before our appointment. We had such a great experience, we became members! The wine is fantastic, the employees are extremely knowledgeable and very nice. The tasting room has a good selection of cheese, meats, and gifts! :) We have since gone on the bus tour during Valentine's Day weekend, and had an absolutely wonderful time. First time for writing a review on Yelp. Yesterday, Karen S introduced me to having a membership of Ruby Hill. We walk in, are asked if we were a member, Karen answers "yes". Leo asks if a certain table would work for us. We, of course, reply "yes". He then returns with the menu of tastings. He shares his knowledge of the wine and their tastes and gives us his recommendations (ones we would have skipped). While tasting the wines (which were exactly as Leo described and quite tasty) we expressed an interest in the wine bottle pourers, so what does Leo do, he brings us all of the pourers they sold! Who does that! What a perfect employee and felt as though Karen and I had a new friend. I will become a member of this winery because of Leo. Thank you so much. read more

So I have yet to visit this place but I have family that visited and had nothing but good things to say. So when I was having some close friends come and visit me in Dallas, TX I called to see if they would ship me a bottle. I had the bottle within 10 days and they costumer service was amazing!!! They made sure that after I received the bottle that I handled it in a way that would give it the best taste! They even emailed me within 12 hours after the bottle was delivered to make sure there weren't any problems. When I visit the area this will be the first winery on my stop! read more

More glitz than actual winery with a tasting room with reminiscent of the mall during the holidays, leading to the question: anything that they don't sell? Answer - yeah, there's a few important items not available: consistently decent wine matched with a working knowledge of their varietals or the Livermore AVA. Oh, the wine club push was heavy - I could even buy the wines that day and then cancel afterward if I wanted - hot damn! Wait, one look at the club member bar was the ultimate turn off - bar flies with no where else to go, caged into a corner. But when asked why a winery that touts Livermore terroir yet produces a Central Coast Chard and a Monterey Merlot...blank stares or "our owners wanted to" or "you know, I'm not sure." Schlepping Sparkling Wine made by Weibel and passing it off as "Champagne" just plain sucks. Shame, but not a surprise. $5 gets you a flight so out of control, 10 plus wines isn't better since most of the other patrons were either already half-smashed or a gaggle of personality-void tiara wearing yentas who pour out of limos and ruin every wine tasting they infest. Here's an idea Ruby: focus on the wines. The Wines. The Wines from Livermore. Good wines from Livermore. Another tip, a few of your employees claim your wines are great while running down the reps of other local houses isn't just bad manners, it shows the egocentric ignorance. read more

Very impressive, especially for a newer winery. Ruby Hill definitely has more of a Napa feel to it in comparison to some of the other wineries in Livermore; the grounds and the building itself are absolutely beautiful, and the tasting room is gorgeous -- very spacious and classy. But like Tori B. commented, Ruby Hill is upscale, tasteful, but not snooty at all. The staff were lovely and enthusiastic to tell us about their wines and upcoming plans and releases, and I enjoyed several of the selections I tasted (for the very reasonable price of $5). Large tasting room, public potty, beautiful grounds and lots of wine knick knacks to take home too. I am not going to tell you which wines to buy because we all like different ones. But we did by some of the Sangiovese and Barbera. They do mail to most states. The tasting serving is more than a sip, so if you get one flight and a friend gets another you can share your taste for a bonus! We tried probably more wines than were on each of the flights. I understand there is a cost for tasting here. $5-$10 is what the website says. My sister is a member and we got to fly by that expense. So I think that may have had something to do with his willingness to pour a few we asked for and repour a couple we had decided to buy. They have an area for private wine tastings. Great for a party of any kind. But we had 8+ in our group and we all had a spot at the counter and we all got great explanations of each of the wines we were tasting. The wines here are quite reasonably priced, HUGE selection - even some port and sparkling wines - and the parking is easy on and off the main winery tour road. I would definitely recommend it for a large group because they had such a nice selection of wines for any taste in the tasting room. Some wineries have only 4 or 5. Here we tried: Sparkling, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Grapeful White, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and a few from the reserve collection as well. read more

Ruby Hill is a great addition to the Livermore wine scene! Their quality is not fantastic, but is fairly in line with price. My favorites are the Sangio which runs about $15 and the reserve Zin ~$24. The rest of the line-up is totally forgettable for me. I've been there three or four times as it is just down the street from my parents house and lubrication is always helpful before large family gatherings. The tasting room is very spacious and it's rare to have a problem finding a spot to fit in. The tasting room staff is a bit hit and miss in terms of both friendliness and knowing what they're talking about. All told, I think Ruby Hill fits in mid-pack in Livermore, but their facilities and location are what make it for me. read more
