Burger was not very good. Taste was not fresh. More of a kid's place. Adults stay away.

We came to Ruby's on a Friday evening after a long day at Legoland. It was recommended by the hotel staff as a place for great burgers and fries. We were happy with both! The burgers were well prepared and the fries were hot and fresh. We loved the endless fries. We also loved the shakes - the double vanilla and peanut butter were delicious. Ruby's Diner is a cool 50's style restaurant that offers breakfast, lunch and dinner menu. There is a kids menu too. At our table we ordered kid's corn dog, chocolate chip pancakes, and from the regular menu burgers and the California Benedict. We all enjoyed our food. The lettuce in the burgers was fresh and still crispy (I hate limp and wilted lettuce in a sandwich of any kind). Overall, the burger was tasty. There's some memorabilia around you in the restaurant...the kids enjoy the model train that runs above you around the ceiling. Some of the display shelves and stuff on display needs to be dusted and cleaned up especially around the tables where you can see it up close while you're eating. Our waiter was nice and his service was good. One of the young gals working the front counter seating people can learn to be a bit nicer with a lot less eye rolling and attitude; after all, she is the first person to welcome patrons to the restaurant. My son reminded me that it's probably a summer job for kids out of school....but, it's a lot easier to smile as far as I'm concerned :) . This place isn't tooo bad. My best friend and I split a turkey spicy melt, and my mom ordered a sandwich as well (don't remember what it was). The three of us LOVE fries so we loved how the fries are refillable, which is one of the reasons why I'm giving this place 4 stars. The customer service is what I really wanted to speak about. While we were eating, our waitress hasn't really checked on us and my mom had to wave her down a couple times. BUT what I really adore is that hours later, after my mom, friend, and I left the shopping mall to go home, my mom had noticed her card was missing! My mom had tracked it down back to Ruby's so we went back to the restaurant and there it was! They held onto it for her, and were honest about it! read more

This would be my first time at this location, it did take awhile to be seated (probably because it was so early in the morning) They weren't fully staffed at the time. This was our breakfast before hitting the flower fields that morning...I gotta say that morning it was pretty delicious, like I haven't had Ruby's ever. Service was good and prompt. Food: we tried the Siracha Burger (12.99) and the Classic Rubys Burger on our visit. Siracha Burger was 1/2 lb juicy patty w jalapeños, pepper jack cheese, the normal veggies (plus cilantro), and a small amount of Siracha. This burger was very tasty and moderately spicy. The jalapeños were pickles and not fresh. The rest of the veggies were fresh. The bun was definitely dry on both burgers. The Classic Rubys Burger ($8.99) had a smaller patty and came with their special sauce. The patty was also juicy on this, but the bun was pretty dry as well (maybe frozen and then thawed?). Fries were ordered as standard and were a little plain. Definitely needed salt, but they were crisp and freshly fried. The fries are refillable, but not the onion rings if you upgrade. The Rubys Rings (upgrade for $1.50) are amazing! They go perfectly with ranch. Butterfinger Shake ($5.99) was great as well. It comes with whip and a cherry on top. You can definitely share it with another person because it fills up two cups. We ordered our shakes after we ate to make sure we had room...and we did. Service: very nice server who seemed to be overworked. He was serving and turning over his own tables at one point in our visit. He was very friendly and attentive. He offered our daughter crackers because she dropped her cucumber on the floor, which was nice of him. It wasn't busy when we went (Monday at 5p) so we were seated right away. Parking: large parking lot shared with the entire mall. No issues on a weekday night in September, but is a different story around Christmas and weekends. You will definitely have to walk a bit then. There is a shuttle to get you there if you don't want to walk and have time to wait, but it will take you less time to walk bc the shuttle has to sit in the traffic too. Atmosphere: 1940s diner theme here with a SD beach twist. Toy train runs along the ceiling, old pictures on the walls, red plastic seats, ketchup and mustard squirt bottles, and paper hats that the employees wear. Very old school feeling here. Lots of booths and few tables. Definitely give their onion rings a try and get a shake after you eat. Hit or miss on the burgers because of the dry buns. Beware that parking can be horrible and turn you away. Expect a wait on weekends and peak season. read more

I have never eaten at Ruby's before but we decided to stop in while we were shopping around the outlet stores. We decided to split the classic cheeseburger and an order of fried zucchini which I thought would've been plenty for us. At the very last minute, my dinner date decided to also throw in an order of chili fries and a vanilla shake. Hmm.. that wasn't part of the plan. Sneaky sucker! Our order came out within 5 minutes and I fell in love with the fried zucchini...right out of the fryer, crispy and with the right amount of batter. The cheeseburger was on the smaller sized but it was the right amount for me. If someone was really hungry, this probably wouldn't be the case if you wanted to share. The burger was tasty but there was nothing special about it. I took a few bites of the chili cheese fries and didn't really care for the shredded meat that they put it in there. I wasn't so much a fan of these. I didn't plan on having any of the vanilla shake but they bring out the left overs in the stainless steal cup they make the shakes in and I was offered to have the rest of it. I thought the vanilla shake was really good and I'd be very tempted to order this again if ever here again. Service was a little awkward but polite. Oh man, need a good fast bite to eat before running off to day of Legoland? Ruby's is where it's at! The servers are awesome and very attentive. Went several times during my stay in Carlsbad, CA. My nephew loved the atmosphere and he said his chicken tenders were perfect with the right amount of ranch for dipping! High praises because this kid is picky! I tried the cheeseburger, shrimp tacos, chocolate shake, onion rings, salad during my visits to Ruby's, all were cooked right and of high quality. If I were local, I would be a regular! Ruby's Diner was a fun way to end a day at Legoland. It took us five minutes to get here from the park. Ruby's is going for the old-time diner feel. The employees are wearing appropriate uniforms for that and the furniture/decor matches the theme as well. There's even a train that runs from a track hanging from the ceiling. I thought that the way that they keep kids entertained was brilliant. Children are given a piece of cardboard and some stickers. You punch out pieces of the cardboard and fold it to assemble a classic car. After that is complete the kids spend time putting the stickers on the car. What a great idea! After I ordered a veggie burger our waitress came back to the table and let me know that they actually had two types of veggie burgers, one that was soy-based and one that wasn't. I appreciated her doing this because soy is a no-go for me. I liked my veggie burger and would definitely order one again. I wasn't crazy about my chocolate shake. It was so thick it was more like a Wendy's frosty that you had to scoop with a spoon. I'm not sure I would order it again. All of us enjoyed the food we got here and had a good time. Food is just like any other Ruby's. Service is horrible. I didn't even get a water until I asked a person mopping the floor. She got me water and took my order. I saw a table of people with burkas on outside patio area. Same treatment. They left after waiting about 20 minutes to get their water. In summary, the server didn't do anything. She let all of the people around her do her job. Cook, bus boy, floor sweeper did good. In the additional tips entry in Yelp, I marked "Not Sure" for "Waiter Service:" because I felt like there was none. Funny to see that the table behind me had the same server and had rotated 2 sets of diners before I got my check. I happened to notice that they were white. I'm not saying she is racist or anything, but if you are a minority, you may get sub-par treatment here. This is based on my observation here just one time, so it may just be that I had a horrible server and the rest of the establishment is fine. I will definitely not be coming back to this place, and it kind of turned me off to Ruby's in general. There are plenty of other diners out there that serve the same thing. I like it and my son loves this place. I've been to a few Ruby's Diner's but like this one best. I think the food is pretty much the same at all of them but the decor is what makes this one fun. Old toys set throughout the place makes this a fun burger joint to hang out in. A large train rolls over head as you watch from below. I always feel that scenery is the key to success. Well if there isn't much to look at from the location make the location the scenery. I like to look at things while I eat if at all possible. Ruby's has that. So the food... I love burgers. I love fry's. They got em both and much more. Though I haven't had anything but burgers and fry's... (almost ever, in my life. First time here and I received HORRIBLE service! Never, ever will I return to this place. My waitress was NOT attentive. Not once did she check on me and my kids to see how we were doing, if we needed anything, etc. I was trying to make eye contact with her because I wanted to order something else, but she never got the hint that "eye contact" means your customer(s) need attention. I ended up asking another waitress for my bill. I really DID NOT want to tip my waitress, but I ended up tipping her $1.00! I find utter humor in people who blame diners for not providing them with the most health conscious food. Remember, Ruby's, is in fact, a diner. A diner is best known for burgers, melts, fries, breakfast foods, and more than likely not famous for how tasty its salad is, how up to standards its veggie patties are, or how fresh its seafood is. If any of those are appealing to your current hunger, Ruby's is probably not the place for you to dine at the moment. Rant aside, I love the overall ambiance of Ruby's. I love how it tries to appeal to kids with its upbeat design and friendly atmosphere. If it were socially acceptable, I would order the kids' meal mac & cheese on any given day. Though its mac & sneez is simply from the Kraft box, there is just something special about eating it at Ruby's. Other than that, Ruby's fries are always a killer. I was getting hungry after walking all day at the Carlsbad Fair it was time for a thick juicy turkey burger from my fave Ruby Burger and headed towards Carlsbad outlet, parking was horrible after going around and around I finally found a perfect spot. Long line at Ruby's so I sat at the counter, this place is always packed to the gills. I ordered my Sunday splurge a big thick juicy turkey burger on a multigrain bun with parmesan fries (no garlic fries all gone). 1940's décor with Coca Cola ads all over, cherry red vinyl booths, mini train tracks on the ceiling, I love this diner and I always enjoy my visit whether Carlsbad or Mission Valley location. Went there with my friend from work, keep in mind we both work at a casual fine dining restaurant. I've been to the Ruby's on the Oceanside Pier, and this place is a complete DISAPPOINTMENT. We both got burgers... Bland. No seasoning on the meat, on the guacamole, nothing. Got garlic fries with both our burgers aannnddd guess what? COLD. Cold and SOGGY. Restaurants have standard and this BY FAR, is the worse place we've been to. We were at the outlet shopping and were torn between Panda Express and this place. We both payed $30 each and wish we just went to Panda Express. Save your money guys. read more

If you are shopping at Carlsbad Outlets and you don't want to lose that precious parking spot that you either paid $7 for or waited an hour with your blinker on while the family of 8 slowly packed away their 2 million bags away and had a conversation with each other while watching you sit there with your blinker on, then the food choices are few and far between. Given that situation, either don't come hungry or you can settle for Ruby's Diner. The food is pretty good so it's not a total loss. Their burgers and shakes are very good and the atmosphere is very conducive to kids so yay and yay for us. I had the Cranberry Turkey Burger which was pretty tasty, I must say. I thought there was a little too much cranberry sauce but that was easily rectified by just scraping off a bit. I'm not into skinny fries too much so I was less than impressed with their chili fries as well. I'm not sure what kind of chili it was but it was not great. More like sloppy joes it seemed. There was a balloon animal maker lady that was there. That's it. She was there. We were at Ruby's for about an hour and she was on her phone, blocking the way to the bathroom for about 55 minutes of it. Not talking on the phone, mind you. Just texting or playing Candy Crush, or maybe looking up how to make balloon animals. I'm not sure but she sure wasn't making balloon animals for the over 20 kids in the place that didn't have a balloon animal. I hope she wasn't getting paid by Ruby's. Just sayin. The service was pretty good. Very attentive for the most part and food came quick, but I didn't get a refill on my drink and no one asked. Kinda disappointing. Cool place for kids, that's for sure, but you can really tell that it's a restaurant that in a Outlet Mall by the type of service you get, if that makes any sense. So i used to love this place. The service used to be excellent, food was hot and delicious place was hoping lile what i expected a 50's dinner to be like. Lately place has lost its mojo. Tonight i visited the establishment and well lets say was not satisfied even if i was from a 3rd world contry eating there for the first time. The waiter was ok he greeted us but wasnt thrilled to be working. I do have to give it to the kid he is a hard worker he really was. We ordered shakes and i got mine first so i dove right in. I got the first drink of the shake and noticed an unfamiliar texture in the shake i imediately spit it out in front of the waiter. Poor kid looked like someone just ran over his dog, apologized to me and had a new shake in front of me before i could blink. I drank this one and it was absolutely perfect. We ordered our meals and i ordered a blues burger cooked well done. The food arrived and i was starving took a big ol bite out of my burger and the inside was still refrigerator cold. Again i spit it out in front of the poor kid and he looked at me again like not only did i run his dog over but then put it in reverse and run it over again. He grabbed my plate humbly apologized and sped off to the kitchen again. 10 mins go by and here comes the kid with a huge smile on his face from feeling like he fixed the situation. He says enjoy as he sets my plate down and asked if we needed anything else. I cut my burger in have take a bite and felt something we all would dread, my tooth cracking from bitting something hard in the burger. I stop chewing and began to fish out the fragments of tooth out of my mouth. I look up and he imediately walks over to his manager and sent her over. The manager walked over i was pretty pissed but its not her fault, i honestly thinks this was retaliation from the cooks. I held my tounge as i told her what happened. Whenever you move to a new area and you see a franchised place, do you ever say to yourself, "Eh, its a common place. It'll always be there, and since I'm not really craving it, I'll go somewhere else since I know I'll end up here at some point"? I said that to myself for 4 years while going to UCI. Not once did I ever come here... at least up until this weekend haha. Before heading back to Irvine, my friend took another group of friends and I to the outlets to kill some time. Considering there wasn't much to do at the outlets and we were getting hungry, I suggested Ruby's because it was one of those places I never got around to trying even though I kept on telling myself that I will one day. The place was packed with families. There was a total of 5 of us, and the wait was about 15 minutes for a table. I didn't think Ruby's was that crackin'. Maybe its just this place. Service was good. Our waiter was friendly and she was nice enough to give us separate checks. As for the food, I prefer Red Robin much more than this. I ordered a caliente burger because I have a thing for Mexican-American fusion creations. I was excited to find out the fries we refillable. The burger was alright, but nothing special. I ordered the cajun fries, and I think I should have gone with the garlic fries instead. The cajun fries were way over seasoned. I prefer steak fries with my burgers (yes Red Robin). I also ordered a banana cream dream shake. I like how they give you the leftovers in the silver cup, but then the shake was alright. After having a shake at Val's burgers in Hayward (Bay Area!), I felt it would be tough to top Val's. Anyway, its a family-friendly environment, but its noisy in there. I am torn between 3 and 4 stars. The service was good. The mushroom burger was yummy, but the fries were a little too limp like they were sitting under the heat lamp or the oil wasn't hot enough. For all you crazy Classic Coke fiends like me, they have the best Coke EVER! Not all fountain drinks are created equal. There is a very small window of syrup-soda ratio perfection and they have it. Not too sweet but not watered down. The burst of refreshing tingling sensation you get in your mouth as you take the first big sip just washes away all the stress and takes you into a bliss (MUST use a straw for the maximum effect). It's located right in the Outlet Mall at Carlsbad so I expected a "fast food" type meal for my wife and two kids. One reason for the great quality is the fact that they make all their hamburgers fresh - unlike most fast food restaurants. Be sure to drop by the next time you are out on a shopping at the Mall. Today my family and I embarked to Ruby's diner. We were there to celebrate my birthday. A birthday that happened to fall on one of the first weekends that the Carlsbad Flower field was opened as well as the first truly decent weekend weather wise. Needless to say, the place was beyond packed. My family and I were seated at our booth. Shortly there after we were greeted by Ruby (no really that is her name!) she was such a sweetheart. While waiting for our food to come to the table Ruby brought us some condiments one of those condiments was a small container of blue cheese. My sister noticed something in the blue cheese, thinking it was a big piece of cheese she stuck her fork in and dug it out. It wasn't cheese it was a piece of paper that had gotten stuck. We informed Ruby of this and she went and told the manager. The manager came back to the table and expressed his concerns about the matter. He apologized and stated that due to the inconvenience he would make the matter right. We appreciated his kindness and continued to eat our food. During which time it was apparent that the restaurant had become more busy. Ruby was slammed with customers. Yet she continued to offer unconditionally excellent service. I have never experienced a day at Ruby's diner like I had today. Based upon this, I will come back again and again. Not to mention I will tell everyone about Ruby herself and the kind staff at the Carlsbad location. Thank you all for making my day one that was pretty perfect! read more

Great family atmosphere, kind of reminds me of Johnny Rockets. I had the Kobe Beef Sliders and a cherry coke, and I must admit that the sliders were missing some flavor but the Hawaiian bread made up for it. The shakes are thick, they taste fresh and are filled with flavor. I had a taste of the strawberry banana shake from my bf's dad and couldn't get enough of it. Everyone at my table had some type of burger with a gang of fries and a salad, they all seemed pretty content with their food, no complaints. I like how our waitress was always visible whenever we looked up and came to us regularly. The booths are huge, enough to fit 3 or 4 people on each side. They also give kids little cars to put together while they're waiting which I thought was really cute. The most important thing to me where ever I go is customer service and I was very pleased with the service our waitress gave us here. read more

We came in to eat 5 minutes before 9 and the servers at the front didnt let us stay for dinner eventhough there were other tables eating . then we asked to order shakes, we went to the take out station and ordered them, and even the cooks asked one of the girls if we were going to order food,. the only reaon the servers didnt let us stay its because they were in a rush to close, so we order 2 shakes and then went back right after to order another one and the girl Alondra told us no cuz they already had washed the machine, i think its ridiculous how the couldnt just sell us another shake and then just clean the machine again, it should be about customer service and making guests happy. They still have other tables eating and they could just easily make another shake. Last time we came there was a guy manager and it was past 9 and he let us take a table and order food . This new manager in charge must've came from serving and she should know better by exceeding guests request by going above and beyond. That didn't happened here. We went into ruby's last night and ordered 3 chocolate shakes for the kids and 2 burgers for us. The shakes tasted nasty and our soda's were flat as well. When I want to be a "fat kid" I am damn good at it!! This is definitely a place to check out for casual traditional American food. Burgers, fried stuff, etc....You know, the "American Way"! Shared a burger and chili fries with a girl friend (you know if you split it with someone you don't feel so guilty) and it was soooo good! Just what I needed :) My boyfriend loves that they serve vanilla coke here too. Drawbacks: 1. FULL of tourists from a variety of countries that have been shopping at the outlet mall all day. 2. Sugar induced fits of insanity from random children. 3. EVERYONE has a birthday here??? I think we heard the poor servers have to sing at least 5 times during our short meal here. My heart goes out to the people who work here who looked relieved when they realized that we not only spoke English, but were locals that weren't going to give them a hard time. For starters, I hate kitsch. No, really. But frankly - I braved the kitsch to order up some carry out on my lunch break, and here is what I have to say: One, the service is fantastic. Freaking fantastic. Cheerful, even though the place was a rush hour mess - both on the phone, and in person. The parking in the area is horrible for midday outlet mall shopping style, but for carryout, just roll on up to the "car-side" delivery - whether you were going in to pick it up, or having them carry it out to you. The food, super yum. I loved the Caliente burger and the cajun fries are quite spicealicious. When it comes to lunching in the Carlsbad area, Ruby's has hit my list as a real option for carry out, but due to my distaste of the soccer mom, kids galore, shopping crowd, and dining chain related kitsch, I will be sticking to carry out. read more

Ruby's has long been one of my kids favorites and over the years we have probably visited this location the most. I love bringing my kids here. The design of the restaurant has a 50's diner theme. Clean comfortable booths which are bright and airy. The first point for the kids is won for always doing better than crayons and a coloring page with the kids menu. Usually, they have a folding cutout paper car the boys can assemble, decorate and then play with during their meal. The cars are always a hit and pass the time waiting for food to arrive. The boys also like the toy trains which circle the dining room. Up until recently, the trains would always get raced. Occasionally, they will have someone walking the floor making balloon animals for tips which also adds to the outing. The food is good. The menu focuses around burgers and shakes. The burgers are good but better can be had elsewhere and I wouldn't go out of my way for one of them. Good fries are a must with burgers and Ruby's consistently delivers. Theirs are thin cut and always arrive hot and crispy. On the occasions when I want to eat healthier, they make tasty salads. My favorite is the apple, pecan and blue cheese salad. The place they excel are their milk shakes. They have a wide selection of flavors and everyone I've tasted has been a treat. They come in a classic fountain cup with the remainder in the steel mixing container. Thinking about my trips here brings a smile to my face. read more

Come here with zero expectations and you'll be fine. That is - Ruby's Diner is a diner. It serves diner food. So if you don't enjoy your eggs runny and your spoons greasy, so somewhere else. (It kills me how elitist Yelpers will berate this type of restaurant because of the "quality" of the food.) It's a diner! That's like complaining that your canoe doesn't have a restroom but the yacht you rode last week has five. We went simple here with a burger dinner and two-egg breakfast. Using the Yelp coupon, the total bill didn't even hit $25. Very nice. The food? Eh. Diner food. Given our time crunch and immediately available seating, Ruby's was the answer. 2019: This Ruby's was a great experience. We had a $25 gift card from a really bad experience at the Ruby's in San Clemente. This Ruby's is what we are used to-nice staff and decent food. I met a business associate there and we had tea. I also ordered a muffin. The waitress was very nice and professional, but I ran out of tea and my hot water was never refilled. Additionally, when I needed to pay I went to the hostess, but apparently you must pay the waitress. Everything worked out ok, but it made me just a little late. I'll go back again, because the staff is so nice. read more
