Ruby's Diner is a chain of Americana restaurants with a 40s, 50s and 60s theme. The chain has a signature look -- bright red vinyl booths, white Formica tables, and vintage memorabilia. Ruby's has had its ups and downs throughout the years, and some locations like Woodbridge, Irvine have permanently closed for business. It's been a few years since we've visited the Tustin location at the corner of Newport Avenue and Irvine Blvd. Same nostalgic decor and same great service, but the menu is not what it once was and the food quality has unfortunately declined. I ordered the Super Burger (melted double Swiss cheese, crisp lettuce, Ruby's Burger Sauce and sliced avocado served on grilled Parmesan sourdough), and I upgraded to Cajun fries. It sounded better than it tasted, but the portion size was generous. My favorite part of the meal was the refillable Vanilla Coke. While more and more fancy and pricey burger joints are popping up everywhere, there is nothing more down to earth and American than grabbing a classic cheeseburger and a shake or a Coke from a Ruby's. This 1950's themed diner has been a part of many local communities for over four decades and very little has changed through the years. The restaurant still features the same booths with bright red and comfy sofas, the servers still wear the same vintage retro-style uniforms, and memorabilia from the days of Big Band music still decorate the walls. Their burgers are always good and accompanied by fresh and piping hot shoestring fries that are properly salted. The meat is flavorful and not too greasy. I also like the toasted brioche bun. I usually go with the classic which comes with American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and Ruby's secret sauce. Sometimes when I want to add some flavors from south of the border, I'll order the guacamole burger. Another one of my favorites is the hickory burger which comes with smoked bacon and BBQ sauce. I find the prices here reasonable and affordable for a treat at a local diner. Their service is usually prompt and courteous. This specific review will highlight Christmastime at Ruby's, which is a family tradition for us to break away during all the busy busy and just enjoy a nice dinner in the midst of all the shopping and wrapping of the holiday. They have a model train not just on display but running in the dining room towards the back (walk in go far right) and the decor is subtle, very small town but with enough touch for a beautiful photo op. I came on a Thursday for dinner and it was a steady flow of customers and lots of families. Not too loud and had the old school music playing in the background. Good service. Loved the that this place hasn't changed and become modernized. Still true to the years of diner experience. Oreo milkshake was a must and it did not disappoint. My boyfriend and I had lunch there several times in the past month. Our food has always been very good. On May 16th, Juan G was our server. He had a big smile on his face when he approached making us feel welcome. He brought our drinks right away. The food came out quickly and was exactly as we had ordered it. This place is busy!! Like ... really busy! I kid you not, people were going in and out every 5 minutes. I had no idea it was that freakin busy!! We ordered the ruby burger. I added an egg on top of it. It came with French fries too! Also got 2 kids meals. The grilled cheese and the chicken tenders. Both also had fries with them. The strawberry milkshake was the best, as my kids loved it! Thick, creamy, and full of flavor! Yum! They brought us waters also, and even little cups for the kiddos! Overall I give it a B- because I wasn't a fan of the hickory sauce and the regular fries were awful. I wish I would have upgraded to onion rings. The other entree was the albacore (tuna) melt. It's been a while since I've had a tuna melt. It was yummy but a little light on the amount of tuna they gave me (Shrinkflation) and I upgrade to sweet potato fries. It has been here a while I can tell you that. Going many places, except when i'm eating, I'll find a way. I did take out like always. I rank this veggie burger here an 8, which is interesting because that's what I rank the veggie burger from the Streamliner in Orange, which is where Ruby's in Orange used to be years ago. Going to the Streamliner was why I thought about coming to Ruby's. As a matter of fact when I ate this burger at Ruby's,, I thought this is very similar to the one at the Streamliner - yet I don't think they're connected. read more

Ruby's always has great service from the servers to management. I had stopped going to any Ruby's for years and over the past few years I have patronized on multiple occasions. The food is good I believe due to attention to details . WhiLe the menu may be the same at its core I like the improvement to brioche buns. The onion rings are a beer batter style ( rather than panko ) which is hard to find...... You can still get a garden burger if you ask..... I'm so sad... this place has changed so much. I usually door dash, but today we dined in. All the things I've loved about Ruby's are no more. No juke boxes at the tables, bottomless fries, or what's going on with their cinnamon roll French toast (see image) that has always been a go-to favorite. I've never seen a skinner French toast, it was more like a crepe. I came here with someone who is not from the US, hoping to give them a classic American diner experience and it was a disappointment :( I know it's not their fault, but came for good food, and a full 1950's theme, but no waitress in their cute uniforms and food was mediocre I'll definitely try again, hoping it was just an off day.
