We came in on a Saturday night, pulled up a seat at the bar, and ordered one regular old fashioned and one pineapple old fashioned -- the latter was listed on the cocktail menu. The list of libations sounded intriguing and exotic, and the bartender wasn't busy. Despite this, we were given the WORST old fashioneds in the history of mixology!! He put in way too much ice, so inevitably both beverages were watered down. The pineapple old fashioned didn't have pineapple flavor whatsoever! Also, a professional bartender would use one large ice cube for old fashioneds anyway -- it's not only sleek and classy, but large cubes do not dilute the cocktail! And at $18/cocktail, this was extremely disappointing. On top of that, the bartender spoke to one customer at the bar the entire time he was making our drinks. Besides us placing an order, he made no eye contact with us, let alone engage. Do note: they automatically slap on an 18% gratuity on all checks regardless of the size of your party. It was just me and my boyfriend and we ordered 2 drinks and bam -- 18% gratuity. Beware the Bar Bandits I went to this hip bar to watch a friend play a few songs. Decor was very cool, an updated older building. My friend and I got a drink, mine was an $18 cocktail from their list (first sip was a straw full of syrup) and my friend had a $9 beer. The bartender, without blinking, said $40. Stunned, he lays down 2 twenties. He didn't look at the menu to see the prices so just took her word for it but later confronted the bartender as he gave her a $5 tip and our bill should have been $27. She said they automatically add 18% gratuity. That is still under $32 and we gave $45. She offered us a "few shots" when confronted. Screw this place! read more

Not digging the hour wait at the Modern Times dojo, I decided to walk the block and check out Rudolph's and I am very glad I did so! Happy Hour is everyday from 2pm-7pm. This bar is actually located in the lobby area of the Freehand hotel. It's absolutely gorgeous inside, very trendy and hip decor. The bar itself is small with only maybe 6-8 seats, but there's plenty of seating area around it (couches and chairs). The tables say "reserved" but you can actually sit down (first come, first serve). But if you sit at a table, then you'll need to order from a server rather than from the bar. Once it starts to get busy and crowded, they get pretty strict about having to order from a server if you are sitting down at a table. I came here on a Saturday evening around 6:30pm and had the Mrs. Jones cocktail. I wanted some fruity and light, and that was the perfect drink! I had a sip of my friend's Albert Lombard Cocktail and that was really good. They infuse teas with their cocktails which is pretty unique. It's a must-try place for cocktails, even if cocktails aren't your thing. To be honest, I like sitting at the bar because the bartenders really know how to create an experience and provide exceptional service. Plus, if you're the kind of person who doesn't know what to order or has questions about different types of liquors, then they can answer all your questions and make the experience that much better. Ordering from a server could end up being a lot of back and forth communication because they won't know as much as the bartenders. Overall, I really loved the atmosphere and service here. A bar/tea room that's hidden in plain sight in DTLA. Atmosphere was open, casual, and hip. Seating mainly consisted of large & comfy communal couches scattered around with dim mood lighting. There weren't any seats at the small bar when we went on a crowded Saturday night so we ordered at the bar and brought the drinks back to our corner on the couch. The presentation was unique and not what I expected...probably the most elaborate/creative I've seen at a hotel bar. They have a tea-centric cocktail menu, which surprisingly works very well. We got: Aim to Misbehave ($15; butterfly pea blossom-infused mezcal, Amaro Montenegro, plum & capricorn tea cordial, fresh lemon juice) - This cocktail had the distinct taste of umeboshi (Japanese pickled plum). The savoriness went perfectly with the sweetness of Montenegro. I know butterfly pea is all the rage in the craft cocktail scene, and it gave the cocktail a pretty pink hue. Came with a cute little flower. We're Not In Kansas Anymore ($15; blended scotch, maraschino, fresh lemon, coffee-infused Punt E Mes, sour cherry bitters, Ricard Pastis cherries) - Came in a bowl with the cherries on the side. Interesting presentation to say the least. And it didn't fail on the taste either...you can't go wrong w/ coffee and cherries. I'd highly recommend this one. You can tell that whoever put together the bar program put a lot of thought and consideration into each cocktail. Alcohol infused tea! What tea lover could pass that up? The place is very stylish and in a very busy area of the hotel (right at the entrance). Whatever you do, don't valet park because it's a nightmare and you were literally stopped in the middle of the street. The bright side about valet parking is that you don't need to worry about finding a space in crowded downtown. The environment itself was very cozy, nice seats, great drinks, good service. This place has a great environment. Low key and good happy hour. My fiancé and I went for the happy hour and stayed for awhile to do some work. When we went (Saturday around 3:30pm) the waitress forgot about our cheese plate. When we got it, it was two cheese slices, of what they claimed was goat cheese but it was hard cheese that looked like Manchego. Mind you the cheese portion was soooo small for ten bucks! Then while eating it I noticed the cheese had mold on it and it went bad! There was fungus growing on it! They took it off our bill and we did not reorder it. Then the waitress, bartender, and manager came to apologize but no one compensated anything else on our bill, which was unfortunate. At the very least they should have given a drink on the house the the lateness of the cheese and then the mold. Overall, good ambiance, nice place to work, and good drinks. read more

Tea and Alcohol combined, yes, please! :) Parking: Street metered parking from 8am to 8pm in front of the hotel. I got lucky and snagged a spot right in front, yay!. There's also surrounding paid, public parking structures or metered parking too, but watch out for signs. This review is mainly for their Happy Hour Session from 3:30pm to 6pm. Combining my two loves with adorable, quirky cups and teapots, yup! Rudolph's Bar & Tea is located inside of the newly renovated Freehand Hotel (once known as the Commercial Exchange Building), I've met up with my Yelp Buddy Isobel L., for some yummy Happy Hour drinks and food. Also, we had dinner reservations at 7:30pm inside the hotel at The Exchange Restaurant, and so we both got here early to enjoy HH, do some catching up, and waited for our other Yelp Buddy, John L., to arrive. As soon as you enter the hotel, turn right, and the bar area is right there. A little dark when it comes to lighting, but that intimate lighting and ambience makes for a very chilled, relaxed and serene environment. Even though they recommend making a reservation for the bar area, reality is the tables and seating are actually based on first come, first serve. Best of all, if you're able to snag a seat on the couch, check underneath it - there are outlets to plug in your devices, woohoo!!! As for the food and drinks: DRINKS: Upon being seated, complimentary flat water is instantly served to you (room temperature). I didn't mind this time since the weather was getting cooler. However, after I finished my HH Drink, I'd poured the remaining flat water into my iced drink, and have the temperature room water refilled again, hehe! Our glasses were constantly refilled by the servers walking around. HH Drink Special: Isobel and I both got their Daily Special Punch Drink (changes daily) $7 - Chamomile Margarita - combination of chamomile tea and tequila. The presentation to this drink was adorable, pretty, and very aromatic with touches of chamomile flowers and a sprig of lavender inside. Even though it had tequila in it, this drink made me feel very relaxed, which I needed since I had a long day at work, lol! I dig it! We also splurged on they Tea & Alcohol Specialty Drinks after we saw a waitress bring over some to another table. We ended up getting the Sulgar Cobbler $25 for 2 people. The drink contains Amontillado Sherry, Olmeca Altos Reposado Tequila, Earl Grey Tea and Passiofruit. This was a tasty tea and alcohol combination, and definitely a lot stronger than the Chamomile Margarita drink. I tasted more of the Amontillado Sherry than the tequila and earl grey tea itself. Nonetheless, I've enjoyed it, and was able to get 2.5 cups of out it between Isobel and I. FOOD HH Food: $6 Shoestring Fries - sooo good!!! Generous and plentiful! The fries stayed crispy throughout the whole time we were eating it. Best of all, it wasn't greasy, and made for a great HH snack! Served with ketchup and cumin mixed mayo (my favorite!). I would definitely recommend getting this! Daily Spread with Three Artisanal Cheeses, Seasonal Condiments and Housemade Chips $16. This wasn't part of the HH menu, but we decided to get it since we still had an hour to kill before dinner, hehe! The cheeses were delicious! My favorite of the three was this soft, creamy wine soaked cheese (forgot the name). It spread onto the cracker with the greatest of ease! The other two cheese were gorgonzola (saltier version of Bleu Cheese), and manchego (thinly sliced, but the texture felt like paper, and the taste was alright). Served with slight sweetened roasted peanuts, and olive oil and tomatillo jelly sauce for dipping. The tomatillo jelly sauce was sweet and amazing (another favorite dipping sauce). The housemade crackers were light, and held up nicely when spreading the wine soaked cheese across it. Yummy!!! Restrooms: Located right next to the bar on the right side. The Women's Restroom is clean, spacious and fully stocked. Their hand soap smells divine! Grapefruit scented, hehe! Service: Friendly and attentive servers. The food and drinks came out promptly. There were three servers making their rounds around the lobby, ensuring all patrons were attended to, and service was great! Overall, I dig Rudolph's Bar & Tea. What a fabulous lobby to come and have drinks at, while hanging out with friends, or even enjoying the solo time. Rudolph's Bar & Tea is one of the food and drink providers, a small collection, found in the lobby of the newly opened Freehand Hotel. It is a shared space so there isn't much of a designated area for those enjoying a carefully crafted cocktail from Rudolph's. Hotel guests and other patrons all sort of combine together in the lobby area. A simple yet beautifully organized foyer; embellished with potted plants and other natural ornaments, it has some retro vibes to it. Certainly has the potential to provide serenity, if you're lucky enough to visit when there isn't much of a rush from guest check-ins or other cock(tea)l craving patrons. So that's the rundown on the space itself, it's quite marvelous. The one cocktail I had, Romance in Durango, which consists of tequila, mezcal, ginger and hibiscus tea among other flavors was a bit of a disappointment. Too sweet for my taste, despite having asked the server about the sweetness of the cocktail before I ordered. To which she answered something like "no, it's more on the smoky side". Perfect - I thought - but upon receiving the damn thing I knew it would be the complete opposite. I keep going against my better judgment when it comes to ordering cocktails, placing my faith in servers who's taste isn't similar to mine. So I did it to myself... It is after all a full bar, so there are classic options available and the drink list doesn't look all that bad. Especially for those who do enjoy some sweetness in their cocktails, but mainly those who enjoy different and delicate flavors. Based on the drink alone I would have gone with a three star rating, but the setting provides a very cool aesthetic to lounge in. Very hip, bohemian decor. The connecting treetop restaurant is Israel food. Not a place to bring a crowd. But definitely a very chill lobby to causally hangout for a drink and snack. I'm super impressed and newly in love with the DTLA bar scene! I frequent Santa Monica bars more often than anywhere else and Rudolph's is such a nice retreat from the hustle and bustle. In fact I'm pretty won over from the whole Santa Monica bar scene. A big shout out to Chris and Oz for an amazing close to the evening of 23rd birthday. The two nicest and knowledgeable bartenders that I've met in awhile. Rudolph's has a very chill vibe with limited bar seating, but a very comfortable lobby area with plenty of couch seating. It's a great place to relax and grab a cocktail. I ordered a mojito with Bombay Sapphire gin with Chris, but I was told that there was only Bombay Sapphire East available. Chris recommended that Beefeater would be a better match as it'll clash less and after receiving the drink I wholeheartedly agree. It was tasty, but still retained that distinct gin flavor. The presentation was just as lovely with a thick sprig of mint adorning the top of the drink. Presentation is a pretty big thing at Rudolph's, which is a nice escape from bartenders trying to rush out drinks. The flower embellished cocktails add a nice touch of sophistication to the mundane vehicle of for the lack of a better term getting shit faced. The funniest thing though was there was a mystery drink in a punch bowl sitting on the counter made by the previous bartender. Chris offered us a taste and I've gotta say it was pretty good. The alcohol was masked very well as Chris and Oz were debating what was in it. They came to some conclusion that for the life of me I can't remember. I ordered from the old world cocktail menu and had the North African old fashioned. The tea base was black vanilla which blended perfectly with the rum and bourbon. The bartender gave me the option of pouring it myself which I happily agreed to! It came on a tray with a small kettle, glass cup, and a mixing spoon, made me feel like I made it myself lol. If you're a whiskey drinker, always go for the North African old fashioned. The vanilla black tea really shines through with the bourbon and the ras el hanout bitters is so fragrant and intriguing. It's he only drink I've ever gotten (I've been here four times now), but I've tried other ones that are quite delicious. The lounge area is spacious, cozy, very modern wood inspired (of that makes any sense). Parking isn't easy, but there's street and lot parking around there at a reasonable price, so you don't have to stress too much. Generally unprofessional bar tenders, combined with a creepy vibe that is eerily reminiscent of 'The Shining,' place Rudolph's squarely at the bottom of the pile of places to get a drink in DTLA. Indeed, we were told to sit at a dirty table. No one brought us water, even after we put in our order. When we did order, I watched the bartender take it down - after which he stood there and appeared to do nothing for about 20 minutes. Then, the bartender got busy and forgot all about my order. I also ordered tea, which was priced at $5 and came in a pot with enough water and leaves for only two cups. Also, the bar didn't have most of the tea on the menu, which is both hilarious and ridiculous given that this bougie establishment is "all about" tea . Further, the DJ's choice in music was specious at best, consisting mostly of 80s b-sides and other ripoffs of Prince's material. All in all, the above is nothing good management and attentive owners could not fix. And yes, my bad experience could be explained by poor management and inattentive owners. But I don't care which it is -- LA is full of places that consistently provide great food and excellent service. Until Rudolph's is one of them, I won't be back. read more

What a hidden gem in LA! The restaurant, Exchange, is very good and I can't rave about it any more. Service was fantastic and the food is on point with every my dish. The portions are smaller and meant to be more of a family style share and tasting experience. Think Otium in terms of the experience but with an Israeli/Mediterranean spin on the food. Then Rudolph's Bar & Tea is a great way to start or end the night. They have wait service at the tables in the bar/lounge but it can get very busy. Be sure to order through the wait staff that goes around tending to each table and not through the bar! They have a nice selection of import whiskey and their tea infused cocktails are also unique, pretty, and tasty. Definitely a hit with the ladies in our group! I was looking for a bar where it be perfect to have a cocktail and read a book. It's located at the freeland hotel. I love the ambiance and decor of this bar. I came right after work around 5 pm so there was plenty of tables to sit. I got a cocktail name sunshine something I can't remember the name but it was really good. The bartender was very nice and friendly he ask if I had any questions, I ask questions about the cocktails and he was able to describe each cocktail and help me decide. I love the place as there's plenty of sofas/ tables where you can study or read a book. I love everything about it just thought it was pretty pricey, 17 dollars for a cocktail. I would probably still come back just because I love the ambiance, love to have a cocktail while reading a book. read more

My SO brought me here on a date night around 9:30pm on a Friday as a surprise. This is actually a hotel bar and located in the lobby of The Freeland, but don't let that trick you into thinking it's another hotel bar. This is much better! They had a great DJ, the crowd was definitely trendy (and more early thirties) and the drinks were phenomenal. The environment is lively and fun. Their cocktail menu features unique teas blended into each drink. My personal favorite was off the "Old World" menu - the North African Old Fashioned. It tasted like a chai-flavored old fashioned and it was phenomenal. The Russian tea was also good (gin based) but the old fashioned was the standout. It was busy on a Friday night and there are seats that were reserved for larger parties, but we didn't have a problem grabbing seats at the bar. This is a great date spot for the night, or a place to grab drinks with your friends to get your night started (friends who are into more interesting cocktails & not your standard vodka soda!) I didn't try any food yet, but I will definitely be back to try the rest of the cocktails on their menu & their small plates. 10/10 would recommend this to locals & also would bring my friends visiting from out of town to show off how much downtown LA has changed. I'm very impressed with this place! I went in a couple of months ago to have a few drinks with my friends to check this new spot out. I thought the decor was very current and stylish and the drinks were really good and unique. I loved it so much, I decided to host my engagement party there. I invited a few people and a lot showed up...and when I say a lot it was at least 40! The staff did such a GREAT job of accommodating us. All the servers were so sweet and on top of their game. I know how a big party can be overwhelming but they were on it! They kept the drinks flowing, good food and great tunes flowing all night. I HIGHLY recommend this place! This is one of my favorite places to work. It's located at the lobby of the Freehand hotel. They have free WiFi and their burger is dank af. They have tea and tea infused cocktails which is pretty cool. I usually just get the peppermint tea. I'm not much of a drinker and if I do drink it's shots of Jameson somewhere I can twerk. But if you're looking for a relaxed place to have a nice drink or do some work, this is a good spot. The ambience is like a dark library mixed with a high class tea house that may or may not have a secret brothel. I'm into it.
