My wife and I went to Rudy's for lunch yesterday. First time there in many years. Ordered the basic 2 enchiladas with rice and beans plate. Lunch "special " price was listed as $12.75 on our menus. Seemed high for a special on such a basic menu item, but oh well. When we received our bill, we were charged $14.00 for each plate. I pointed out the error to the cashier, expecting her to apologize and correct the amount to the posted price- no big deal. Went with my coworkers for lunch today and it was a good 4/10. The food was okay, not the best but definitely something to fill your tummy up! I have been eating here religiously since 1997 and we are now in 2020 if that tells you anything. This family owned Mexican food "hidden gem" has been open since 1975. Let me start with the staff of which many of them are family members. Polite, accommodating, funny, nice to talk to, always remind you that the their plates are hot, refill your tea, etc...they always ask how your meal was and tell you that they will be waiting for you to come back. I have had most of their menu but I am addicted to two of their dishes in particular. The Chicken Chimichanga con queso with rice and beans and the Sour Cream Chicken enchiladas with rice and beans. OMG where do I start?!!! First, their plates are always brought to your table "bubbling hot." So hot that the staff will always remind you to "be careful Señor, the plate is very hot my friend." This makes a HUGE difference in the taste of the food btw. Their queso that smothers their square, fried Chicken Chimichanga is DELICIOUS. The pulled off the bone chicken inside is moist and full of flavor. Even their Mexican rice and refried beans are perfectly cooked. You can always tell how well Mexican rice is cooked by tasting the char grilled crispy pieces. And it's all brought to you on a plate so hot that your refried beans are bubbling and the wait staff is using a mitten to set it on your table. The Sour Cream Chicken Enchiladas are phenomenal as well. Again, the plate is so hot that their made from scratch sour cream sauce "bubbles" when it is brought to your table. I have never in my life had better sour cream sauce than Rudy's, like ever. It DISSOLVES en su boca!!! You will taste nothing better in the entire DFW metroplex. I almost forgot to mention how good their house made salsa is, it is a delicious red salsa that has a little kick to it and goes perfectly over anything that you put in your mouth. I would never write a review like this if I didn't love this Tex Mex. No one is paying me to write this. I eat here at least once a week during lunch as I work in Coppell and live in East Dallas. Friendly service and language not an issue as was mentioned in some reviews. The waiter was able to answer all my questions in regards to the ingredients in the dishes and was very patient with someone with dietary restrictions such as mine. This place was good but not great. I've only been once so i can't be sure how great other things were on the menu but i enjoyed my dish. I suggest this to anyone looking for reasonable Tex-Mex. I have always heard about this Mexican food restaurant from my husband and his mother for as long as I can remember. I live in Austin but happened to be in the area, so I thought I'd finally check it out. My mother in law has been eating here for 41 years and now I know why. This place is amazing. The food was delicious. I had the sour cream enchiladas: one beef, one chicken. My husband had the Rudy's special. We were in and out in 20 minutes and for less than $20. The only thing better than the food was the service. Our server was very helpful and attentive. He noticed that I had grabbed my jacket out of the car and he turned off the fan above me without me even having to ask. I'm not a jerk, and I know that everything I didn't like wasn't their fault, it's my own personal preference. However. There are plenty of both authentic and tex-mex places in Irving, and while the styles are different, I can appreciate each. This place, however, takes tex mex to an extreme. It's like they're trying to duplicate Taco Bell. You won't find onions, cilantro, or carne asada here. The tortilla chips are thick like doritos, and while warm, are not freshly fried. Your food will be topped with shredded iceberg lettuce, tomato and processed yellow cheese. The rice is bland, the beans are soupy. Tacos come in a hard shell. Honestly, I've enjoyed walking tacos at like a school carnival more than this. When I saw the limited variety on the lunch menu I flipped inside the full menu, willing to pay more to get something like a street taco, or steak enchilada, or maybe some pozole... nope. Different combinations of the same things, nothing exciting. Bottom line: If you're over the age of 40 and caucasian, you will probably love this place. If you're hispanic or a foodie or even just frequent authentic Mexican restaurants, you're probably going to wish you could get your $9 back. I really like the sour cream enchiladas at this place. I keep coming back for the enchilada plate. These enchiladas remind me of a Mexican food place I used to go to when I was growing up. Hot sauce is good but a bit vinegary. I also like that they put butter on the table for the tortilla chips. This is a mom and pop joint that has been doing things the same for forty years. Staff is awesome! I recommend this place but I come for specific menu items. I can understand why others dont like this place as much as I do. I understand because some of the menu items are average. I also feel its unfair to compare this place to more main stream establishments as this is a mom and pop Mexican cafe.
