My family and I came in on Friday night at 8:30. Weren't exactly greeted was actually told, "Just to let y'all know we're out of cream corn, peach cobbler and bread". No "hi" or "welcome" whatsoever. Ordered our side and 3 meats. Went inside to sit down. No sauce on the table for the very dry brisket we got. Didn't see an employee at the counter to order drinks for several minutes. Without bread, my kids went through their meat pretty quickly. My husband decided to go to the outside counter and order more meat at 8:50. As he and another customer are trying to order, what looks to be a lead/manager (chubby older woman) is standing there making faces and rolling her eyes as they do. BOTH of them noticed this. This stores hours say they close at 9:30, NOT 9. Doesn't look good for customers to see an annoyed employee (insert eye roll). Husband asks if they no longer have sauce, is told customers have to ask for it, that's weird. Why isn't it offered when actually ordering. He then comes back inside and places the tray down, another employee comes up and says "if y'all need to get refills you have to do it now, we're turning them off". Looked at the time, 9:02. We were practically being rushed out! I get it people want to get things done early and get out of there, but that was rude. Could've given the fountain machine until 9:15. I've worked fast food/restaurant, a simple turn of a key and that's it, not hard at all. Another employee is already mopping the whole front area with customers still inside and only one wet floor sign. 9:08 lights and doors are closed to the outside counter. If y'all are trying to close at 9, y'all should update the hours on your website. As for that lady rolling her eyes, I suggest you do that in the comfort of the back office, instead of in front of paying customers. We paid for dry meat and HORRIBLE service! I first reviewed Rudy's when I was living in Del Rio. At the time, I noted that part of their popularity probably stems from their locations being established in smaller cities, thus removing much competition from other, better barbecue places. After living in San Antonio for a year and seeing how relatively bleak the barbecue scene is in the city, I thought it would be useful to try Rudy's again. With dozens of locations, they certainly have their business down to a smooth operation, offering me my desired meat and sides with nothing but courteous professionalism. They do the all of the smoking in house in big oak-smoked pits, and offer you samples of their sausage while you wait for you order - both staples of better barbecue places. I grabbed an order of brisket and and order of turkey. I forgot to mention what side of the beef I wanted, so my selection was fairly lean, though flavorful. I remember the turkey being a great selection when I was in Del Rio, and this bird was equally good. Both are dry rubbed and provide excellent flavor on their own, but their trademarked "sause" provides a vinegary-tomatoy kick. It's not the best San Antonio has to offer, but their ironic claim of "worst barbecue in Texas" is far from accurate, too. Top half in San Antonio? Probably, but that's more thanks to places like County Line and Bill Miller lowering the bar. read more

Mmmmm, love stopping here to get some BBQ to go! Brisket and sausage are the best, cream corn and cobbler. But really, don't bother with the other stuff. I don't think the ribs or the "chopped" are very good at all actually. Its actually a little pricey too when you're talking about white paper plate BBQ, but its fun to stop, especially if you have some out of town guests. Worst experience so far at a Rudy's BBQ. Ordered 3/4 lb Brisket and received precut dried out brisket. The cutter had an aluminum pan that he was pulling from. Expect it was a cancelled order. Burnt ends were to dried out to be edible. This is the 2nd time at this location where I feel the quality was below par. My advice, skip this location. read more

For BBQ you get at a gas station it's phenomenal. It's something that me (and most I know) gauge other BBQ from. If you have folks from out of town this is the place to take them. By far the BEST brisket I have ever had. It was so good that it actually made our other meats taste less then impressive. Went to the to go side, only waited about 10 min total. Order and they had everything I needed. I know they were out of some other things though and people had to wait for upwards of 20 min. The corn was amazing as ever as well. We took the short drive out of San Antonio to Rudy's (about 20 minutes from the river walk N/E of San Antonio). This place looks like a gas station and is very simple. Just the basics here... brisket, ribs, chicken... We had the brisket and it was AMAZING... I had read in other reviews that it was dry- NOT MINE. It was tender juicy and prefect. The BBQ sauce was tangy and spicy. We also had ribs and sausage, all cooked perfectly and delicious. Creamed corn Cole slaw pickles... Perfect. My wife said it was the best brisket she had EVER had in her life! Not sure why others had a bad experience but Rudy's was spot on for us! read more

It's a direct walk-up and you order straight from the menu thats hanging over the counter. Everything is ala cart. Almost everything is slow cooked and you will have zero effort pulling the meat off the bone! Rudy's BBQ sauce is in a class of it's own. This sauce should belong in it's own food group! Lunch Nov 16 Yes, this is adjoining a gas station. But don't be afraid, its a legit restaurant. Sides: Cole Slaw was good, Cream Corn was great. Meats: Sausage was really good, Moist Brisket was really good, Turkey was good, the mixed chopped meat was good (but i thought the sausage in it kinda disrupted the texture a bit) and the Pork Ribs were sub par (moist, but no flavor other than the rub that seasoned all the meat). And to my taste that what I didn't care for, the seasoning on the meat. I like to taste that smokey, cooked flavor of the meat (which the moist brisket seemed to have). I really liked the BBQ sauce though and it certainly enhanced the turkey and pork ribs. The cost was half of what I paid at a "famous" BBQ place the other day -- so I cant complain as the cost for quality and taste was very fair! This location particular has an AMAZING cream corn dish that's worth the wait. I ordered some turkey and some brisket. The brisket was smokey with a great layer of bark on ends. Full of flavor with perfect texture. Just a little tug on the brisket will allow the brisket cut to break apart. The turkey has a nice peppery rub on it which is just an excellent addition to the flavor of the turkey. All in all, Rudy's is an excellent chain it's just some locations are better than others. The third time the pit master recommended the sausage to go with my brisket. Brisket was good but sausage was very fine. Well seasoned and explosively juicy. On my final night in town the pit master recommended the brisket. I ordered off the fatty side. Best decision yet. Got some of the finest brisket I've had. If you're hankering for a specific cut then by all means order it. However, if you're up for the finest then take the recommendations. They know best. I would give Rudy's five stars but I need a broader sample to make such a claim. I mean this IS a barbecue state and I haven't tasted it all. read more

Meh..all the hype and low on delivery. No, I'm not some BBQ connoisseur, I'm just an average boy from NJ who likes good food. This place is a 'try once because everyone recommends it, but don't go back.' Their sauce is VERY tomatoey....I might as well have had my mom's marinara on BBQ meat. Just didn't go. The meat by itself was fine. If you really feel like splurging, just go for the brisket, 'wet.' That just means it's the greasy stuff. Has a nice bark and the flavor really sings 'I've been cooking for hours and I'm yummy.' Tried the turkey and I would have done better at Whole Foods. Theirs is dry and has no flavor. Besides, turkey and marinara--blech. The reason I do give this establishment 3 stars is mostly based on the fact that the staff is REALLY nice. Really made me feel at home like I was one of regulars. Also, this place isn't too expensive I suppose. 13 bucks will get you a pound of whatever you want. Hello. My wife and I are usually big fans of Rudy's so I wanted to bring this to someone's attention. I picked up a half chicken and some other things about 7pm this evening and the chicken tasted like nothing but lighter fluid! We had to throw it out. I've cooked lots of bbq and that taste is quite obvious. My whole family agreed. I wouldn't think you'd start a cooking fire using fluid but this one defiantly had been. So we ordered a half pound of turkey and some bread, along with a sausage link. Everything was delicious, even though turkey is not something I would normally order from a BBQ restaurant. I was impressed though. I thought the menu was a bit weird here compared with other Rudy's locations. When we stopped at Rudy's in El Paso, they had sandwiches on the menu. But at the Selma location, I guess you just order meat by weight and they throw in some slices of bread. Fair enough. It all goes down the same way. Great flavors their meat doesn't need bbq is just very good as it is just well seasoned and preserves the meat flavor. Creamy corn is awesome, need to try that if you havent. Sausage is also very good. Plates are just to be discarted and platic forks. Is a different experience from a full service restaurante. But the product is worth the visit. Why just 3 stars. Well is not as clean as normal restaurante. Silverware and plays could still be better. read more

We went to this Rudy's after a trip to Fiesta Texas and were so disappointed. We're used to the Rudy's from the Austin area and this was such a different experience. We were rushed through our ordering for a family of eight when this location was no busier on a Tuesday evening than the Round Rock location on a Saturday night (which they handle very well). I had to double check that the moist brisket they served us was actually moist brisket because it looked dry. They said yes, but it was dry. Nothing like what we've come to expect from Rudy's. And then the creamed corn was runny. This was the nail in the coffin for us. The only plus was the lady who served us ice cream was very nice to us. read more
