Our team was in Hollister for a swim meet. We finished clean up and went to dine at some recommended places. First was 19th hole...closed at 2:30pm on a Saturday but opened at 4pm. At least the drive to the restaurant was beautiful. I've not been in the Hollister area so it was not a total loss, got to see some new areas. Next was Country Rose...closed so right across the street was RUNNING ROOSTER. I did not get any info that there was a drink menu/cocktails/bar but saw a sign for BLOODY MARYS which is one of my favorite drinks! It did not disappoint. The pepper in particular was awesome! It was chunky and by that I mean the pepper was freshly ground. I could taste it in every sip. Next were chunks of tomatoes coming through the straw yet it was not thick. I don't like thick Bloody Mary mix. Right about of Vodka! I had the Cobb salad which for the price could have been a bit bigger but tasty. I love BIG SALAD Also the fried chicken sandwich was big in size and delicious! The spices were what made it better than most. My teenage son who eats everything only ate half and took the rest home. The fries that accompanied the sandwich had a sprinkle of garlic and being from Gilroy...gotta have the garlic. Service was good and food came with quickly. We go here 2-3 times a month. The food is good and the service has gotten so much better than it was a year or so ago. There was a long time that we stopped going here because the service was just awful. I'm not sure if it's been a specific focus on improving service or just better people hired, but it works and they are fantastic! Always very attentive and asking to refill beverages. Food comes fast and hot! And generally happy people to deal with with smiling faces. Before dinner we often have a margarita and appetizer which are both delicious! The steak bites are so good and the steak bite cheesy fondito is amazing. I've not been impressed by the nachos but the chips and guacamole is good too! The chips include flour tortilla chips which are crispy and yummy! We tried the carmelized onion flatbread and it was sooo good! I'm probably going to have that for my meal next time. My favorite is the rotisserie chicken with mashed potatoes but they don't serve that until 5:00PM. If we are there earlier, I'll usually have a burger which are very good but very messy! I've had the salmon a couple of times. Once it was a tad overdone for my taste but still good. Salads are also very good, even the small side salads. A bit more selection with the menu would be good but then again, I really appreciate a restaurant that doesn't stockpile too many dishes on the menu and focuses and doing a good job with the things they have on that menu. The atmosphere is good here too. Very clean and comfortable. Music often playing but not too loud and sports on the television but not annoying. We usually will take out of town friends here as it's a comfortable place in Hollister with good food, good service and a nice environment. read more

My boyfriend and I stopped here for dinner while staying in Hollister for a night. We found it on Google and it looked like it offered a variety of hearty food that we needed after a day of hiking, so we decided to go for it. The place was busy on a Saturday night but we were immediately seated and service was quick and responsive the whole night. We started with three appetizers - the seasoned Outlaw french fries, barbeque wings, a spring mix salad - and a pineapple cider. My boyfriend loved the boneless wings, with just the right amount of sauce, the fries were flavorful, and the salad fresh. The cider was super tasty, like a pineapple gummy bear! For our entree we shared a pizza with no cheese, pepperoni, sausage, and olives. For a place that specializes in wood fired food, the pizza was disappointing. The crust was pretty soft and there just wasn't much flavor. Maybe it would've been better with cheese, but based on how good the appetizers were, we were let down. We finished the meal with a brownie and ice cream, which were both good. Our waitress ended up only charging us half price for the pizza since it took a little while to get, which was much appreciated, and the total was reasonable considering how much food we ordered. The restaurant looks clean and lighting was nice. There was sports on, but it wasn't too loud. The burgers, garlic fries, and onion rings were good. The server was really friendly and talkative to the tables surrounding us, but she acted as if we hardly even existed. She wasn't rude, but clearly didn't want to engage with us, and never even asked how our food tasted. We had to ask for A1 sauce twice, because they just brought out little 1 oz portions at a time. Tasty beer and burger I've had in awhile. Service was great, friendly and very fast. The server also acknowledged the children and treated them equally which is awesome. Came here with friends for lunch recently. The food was very good as was the service. We were seated in a clean comfy booth near the bar. So far, so good - three stars. But there was a man at the bar yelling at the football game on TV. He clearly had some serious mental issues. He'd wander around the restaurant trying to get patrons to talk to him. Made all of us feel uncomfortable- minus one star. The reactions from the waitstaff appeared to indicate that this sort of thing happened a lot and there was nothing they could do about it. I'll find somewhere else in downtown Hollister to eat where I can enjoy my meal in a more comfortable environment. read more

This is the trendiest restaurant in Hollister that includes a beer/wine bar with unique and multiple selections. The bar area has Flat screen TV's set for watching sports. I find them to be a little pricey so I prefer the lunch menu that has seven items $12 and under and includes a soft drink. I love the fish tacos on the lunch menu. Lunch also offers some of the selections offered at dinner but the majority do not include drinks. The menu includes burgers for lunch and dinner. I prefer the 1/4 pound burger with blue cheese crumbles for $8.50. The cedar plank salmon with a sweet potato is delicious! It is served on the cedar plank it is cooked on and comes with a side salad. The salmon is on the dinner menu but if you ask they may make an exception and serve it at lunch. Make reservations if you plan to come on a Friday night. read more

It looks like they have worked out some kinks since the initial reopening... The first week I had a terrible experience. I waited about 2 months to come back and was happy with the wait staff and the food! Prices have definitely increased a significant amount after the remodel which I'm not too happy about....everyone I know in Hollister feels the same way about it. I won't be able to come a couple times a month as I did before the remodel. I'm also confused why they close after 2pm and reopen a few hours later... Other than that, I LOVE this place! read more

Stopped in here after skydiving on the recommendation of the staff at the skydiving place. Found it easily, parking was easy and we were seated right away - was 2pm on a Monday :) The hostess asked if we wanted drinks as she sat us - my hubby ordered a beer, I asked for water - she brought my water, but no beer. About 10 minutes later our waiter came and asked us if we wanted drinks, my hubby told him the hostess was bringing his so I ordered a cider. He immediately brought my cider, but still no beer :( About 10 minutes later my hubby finally asked our waiter for his beer since I think the other one was never going to show up. They seemed to be out of a lot of their on tap beer - maybe they had a big crowd over the weekend?? We quickly ordered some onion rings for an app and then two HUGE burgers for lunch!! The rings came fast and man they were GOOD!!!! We inhaled the rings like we hadn't eaten in weeks - we did notice that on the smaller rings the batter was thicker and the onion was actually still cold in the middle - nothing we couldn't handle though :) Our burgers quickly came and I seriously looked at it and wondered HOW I was going to eat this thing... I can't remember what burger I had but it had bacon, grilled onions, crispy onions, red onions and a BBQ glaze - it was really tasty, but HUGE!!!! What a complete nightmare! I went to order a single cheeseburger with a gluten-free bun it cost about $12.90 and I gave a whole $20 for a good tip. I was told to be 10 to 15 minutes wait. After asking politely and waiting 45 minutes in the cold I was told by the owner that it was going to be another hour and there were eight people in front of me. I'm very patient and polite I asked for my money back he went inside after 10 minutes never came back out he still has my $20. I don't even care that I never got my food but to keep my money too? I don't understand how someone could be so mean spirited I would never go to this place or recommend it it was the worst experience I've ever had and clearly this poor man was taking something out on me what a sad story, I'm not surprised with the state of affairs in the restaurant business but some people go too far read more

I've never been in a place where I have been treated with such disrespect. We ask the waiter as we passed an empty booth if we can take it. Her response was no, because the waitress had a large party in that section and wasn't able to attend it. We then ask if we can wait for something else opening in the restaurant vs the bar section. She agree to let us wait for it, but it was going to take 15 min. We agreed and waited, during our wait, a great booth was opening and as we were next and we're looking forward to being seated there. Unfortunately a couple with a little girl that just arrived wanted to seat there too, the gentlemen slipped some money to the hostess to be seated at the booth opening. As this occurred the other hostess approach us and proceeded to seat us on the original booth we first requested. My friend approached the hostess and ask why aren't we being seated at the booth that open, as we confronted her of the bribe she had just received from the gentlemen. She proceeded to finally allow us to seat there... yet to my surprise when talking to the manager who was our waitress, she dismissed it with no regard. Great fried pickles! Finally a place that does them as slices instead of wedges so they are not too sour. We ordered those for an appy along with a margarita pizza and a chicken quesadilla. Our server was insistent that the pizzas only feed one person but there is no way that's true! Our meal arrived and it was huge! I could only finish half my quesadilla. We had a ton of leftovers. There are lots of local micro brew beers on tap including one called Red Trolley I really enjoyed. My wife also had the Rooster Chardonnay (the house wine) and at just $4 a glass it was surprisingly really good. I even tried it and was impressed. The whole meal with plenty of alcohol was under $40, you definitely don't pay city prices out here! I'm thinking we might even drive back next weekend and stop here again. Best. Burger. Ever. I didn't say it, this is actually the company's slogan/mantra/creed (insert creative descriptor here). The burger wasn't the best ever but it was Pretty. Damn. Close. Upon walking into the joint, you'll notice an employee outside working the grill, this is where your food is assembled. This is certainly something you dont typically see, I like the fact that you can see how your food is being prepared. Once you enter, you take your menu, mull over the vast selection of burgers, appetizers, salads and desserts and approach the counter when a decision has been reached. Plenty of options here, not only can you create your own burger, you can also select between sizes, quarter, half and full pound offerings are available. If you're not feeling creative right at that moment, you can choose from a list of their specialties. I went with their Over The Top Burger with their Outlaw Fries, which are essentially seasoned fries. The Over The Top Burger is good. Think of a Western Bacon Cheeseburger from Carl's Jr on steroids. Now think of that same burger with actual produce and sumptuous taste and you've got yourself a winner! Their dessert selection is also extensive, the Chocolate Chip cookie was big, but moist.
