I went to the Running Rooster years ago and then recently decided to try it again with my family. Boy, has it changed! We liked their varied menu and sunny patio. I had the regular fish tacos, which were pretty good. There were a couple of burgers I'd like to try at future visits. My husband enjoyed their house Bloody Mary (yum) and they have an interesting bar menu & beer selections. Lots of big TVs for all you sports fans out there! Go team!!! Since the remodel, and them reopening. The food has gotten so much better!!! The staff is super friendly!! Very kid friendly as well. The bar area looked so cool! I find it amazing where you can pay $5 to buy the chief a drink for them after work. They also have pass it on, where you buy someone else a drink and when they come in they have to pass it on. It is the little things like that. In the last month, I have gone here twice and counting. To see running rooster doing so much better then they were is amazing. This is one of my favorite places in town. Service is good. Food is satisfying and they HAD...I say had because its not on the most recent menu I have seem. But they had the most amazing appetizer I have ever eaten! It was so delicious that my eyes literally rolled. It was the steak fondito! Served with "house chips" NOT tortilla chips option. The house chip is almost like a fried dough. Served with the fondito...which is melted cheese, onions, peppers, steak, with a pico on top. Omg!! We had 5 adults, a 4 year old and a 1 year old who did not order anything. I didn't read the fine print on the menu. Husband paid and the bill was $220. When we got home we looked more closely. There was a 20% service charge ($29). We had also gave the server a tip because we didn't see the service charge. So she got paid a double tip. I called them up to clarify. They charge a service charge for parties over 6, which includes kids (1yr old who didn't order anything, and 4 year old who did). I am used to groups over 8 being charged this, but not 6. The service was not very good, although the server was great, just didn't see her very much. The food was definitely not worth this price. I won't be going there again. ***EDIT*** Just noticed that they charged us a dollar extra for a small cup of ranch dressing that we asked for because the one they gave us for our basket of fries was not enough. read more

Our team was in Hollister for a swim meet. We finished clean up and went to dine at some recommended places. First was 19th hole...closed at 2:30pm on a Saturday but opened at 4pm. At least the drive to the restaurant was beautiful. I've not been in the Hollister area so it was not a total loss, got to see some new areas. Next was Country Rose...closed so right across the street was RUNNING ROOSTER. I did not get any info that there was a drink menu/cocktails/bar but saw a sign for BLOODY MARYS which is one of my favorite drinks! It did not disappoint. The pepper in particular was awesome! It was chunky and by that I mean the pepper was freshly ground. I could taste it in every sip. Next were chunks of tomatoes coming through the straw yet it was not thick. I don't like thick Bloody Mary mix. Right about of Vodka! I had the Cobb salad which for the price could have been a bit bigger but tasty. I love BIG SALAD Also the fried chicken sandwich was big in size and delicious! The spices were what made it better than most. My teenage son who eats everything only ate half and took the rest home. The fries that accompanied the sandwich had a sprinkle of garlic and being from Gilroy...gotta have the garlic. Service was good and food came with quickly. We go here 2-3 times a month. The food is good and the service has gotten so much better than it was a year or so ago. There was a long time that we stopped going here because the service was just awful. I'm not sure if it's been a specific focus on improving service or just better people hired, but it works and they are fantastic! Always very attentive and asking to refill beverages. Food comes fast and hot! And generally happy people to deal with with smiling faces. Before dinner we often have a margarita and appetizer which are both delicious! The steak bites are so good and the steak bite cheesy fondito is amazing. I've not been impressed by the nachos but the chips and guacamole is good too! The chips include flour tortilla chips which are crispy and yummy! We tried the carmelized onion flatbread and it was sooo good! I'm probably going to have that for my meal next time. My favorite is the rotisserie chicken with mashed potatoes but they don't serve that until 5:00PM. If we are there earlier, I'll usually have a burger which are very good but very messy! I've had the salmon a couple of times. Once it was a tad overdone for my taste but still good. Salads are also very good, even the small side salads. A bit more selection with the menu would be good but then again, I really appreciate a restaurant that doesn't stockpile too many dishes on the menu and focuses and doing a good job with the things they have on that menu. The atmosphere is good here too. Very clean and comfortable. Music often playing but not too loud and sports on the television but not annoying. We usually will take out of town friends here as it's a comfortable place in Hollister with good food, good service and a nice environment. read more

My boyfriend and I stopped here for dinner while staying in Hollister for a night. We found it on Google and it looked like it offered a variety of hearty food that we needed after a day of hiking, so we decided to go for it. The place was busy on a Saturday night but we were immediately seated and service was quick and responsive the whole night. We started with three appetizers - the seasoned Outlaw french fries, barbeque wings, a spring mix salad - and a pineapple cider. My boyfriend loved the boneless wings, with just the right amount of sauce, the fries were flavorful, and the salad fresh. The cider was super tasty, like a pineapple gummy bear! For our entree we shared a pizza with no cheese, pepperoni, sausage, and olives. For a place that specializes in wood fired food, the pizza was disappointing. The crust was pretty soft and there just wasn't much flavor. Maybe it would've been better with cheese, but based on how good the appetizers were, we were let down. We finished the meal with a brownie and ice cream, which were both good. Our waitress ended up only charging us half price for the pizza since it took a little while to get, which was much appreciated, and the total was reasonable considering how much food we ordered. Overall, I would definitely go back, but I wouldn't get the pizza again. read more

The server was really friendly and talkative to the tables surrounding us, but she acted as if we hardly even existed. She wasn't rude, but clearly didn't want to engage with us, and never even asked how our food tasted. We had to ask for A1 sauce twice, because they just brought out little 1 oz portions at a time.
