07/25/26 - We were in Grand Haven & found Russ Restaurant about 3 mins from our hotel. Russ' is a large restaurant w/a large menu selection. The restaurant was packed as this was the First day of The Grand Haven Coast Guard week. They have a fairly large menu selection & the prices are pretty reasonable. Unfortunately the items we ordered were not that good. I ordered a corned beef hash that looked like a flattened pancake. The flavor was sort of lacking. My wife ordered the eggs Benedict w/hollandaise sauce. The sauce was severely lacking. Maybe we just ordered the wrong items because they had a fairly large menu. Our server was awesome. She was a grandmotherly type. I was teasing her & asking her if her mother knew she was working there. Food: I got the fried pickles appetizer and for entree, the meat loaf with a side of cheese broccoli soup and Mac&cheese. The fried pickles were super crispy, well seasoned and a decent quantity. The entree was equally tasty. I felt the price was very fair for the taste and quantity. Service: I forget the young lady's name, but she was very friendly and helpful. She returned frequently to replenish drinks and bring additional condiments. I returned the next day for breakfast and got the corn-beef hash entree. It came with two eggs, and two pieces of toast with strawberry jam. I was extremely impressed with how perfectly cooked the over easy eggs were, with the thinnest membrane protecting the yolk. read more

Russ' is our morning stop while in Grand Haven. Its patrons are locals. I love the friendliness of the local who make up the staff. And the locals who patronize the restaurant. My boys (14 and 11) love their waffles and pancakes with chocolate chips! I usually get a couple eggs with hash browns. My eggs are always excellent. And make sure you try their Strawberry Jam. My boys can't get enough. And their coffee also seems to hit the spot. They have some nice Grand Haven type signs but that's not their highlight. What can I say, I grew up on Russ'. Childhood memories of family vacations and dinner with grandparents came flooding back when I visited as an adult. I can honestly say that I have never had a bad meal here. It's on par with Denny's or Big Boy. American classic burgers, hot and cold sandwiches, a soup and salad bar, and amazing crispy fried chicken. It's perfect for families because the menu is so varied everyone will certainly find something that fits their taste. Staff are always busy but friendly. I will say that my husband was less impressed. He wasn't disappointed but he was very meh about the experience. He'll go back but he won't crave anything. As for me it's probably 50% flavor and 50% nostalgia. It will always be a must stop when we are in the area. read more

What's interesting, is that when I was growing up in Spring Lake, we rarely went to Russ'. The only time I recall was when my grandparents were with us. They loved Russ', so that is probably why I considered it an "old peoples" restaurant. Here's the reality.....it IS an old people's restaurant, at least in the morning. As soon as you walk in senior citizens are everywhere. But....so are middle aged couples and small families with kids. I've had a lot of friends and family stay over for the holidays and of course they want to go to breakfast. Many remembered Rendezvous, the last time they were here. Of course that joint is shut down. Also, some wanted Morningstar. For some reason, visitors really like that Morningstar. But I've been insistent that we go to Russ'. We go and they all really enjoyed their meals. The prices are right, the service is great and the food doesn't pretend to be something it's not. Granted, you wont find the fancy Village Baker, Paisley Pig or Morningstar pretentious specialties, but you also won't be gouged at the cashier station on your way out the door. Here's a side note: The last few times I was there, this one guy sat in a booth, drank coffee and sold hats! One of my friends actually bought one. I think they were ten dollars! I sometimes visit this location because it is convenient to work and can be a quick lunch stop. Lately I have noticed a real decline in quality. This is usually a symptom of poor management. Today my suspicions were confirmed. When I entered there were a couple of parties paying their bill with the manager and a cash I behind the counter. The manager quickly came out from behind the counter to tell me he would be with me in just a second. In reality, the time was more like 5 minutes while he carried on a casual conversation with another customer. I'm not sure how much longer I would have waited because I tired of standing there "rotting in my shoes" while he socialized with what appeared to be a friend. With management that isn't any more concerned with customer service than that, I am not surprised that the other quality issues are becoming more prevalent. I know you don't go to Russ' for the high quality but this location isn't even standard Russ' quality. read more

My experience with Russ' is consistency. That is a thing so many eateries seem to be missing nowadays, unless you're at a huge FF franchise. Only once have I had to leave Russ's because they had no tables available. They are notorious for hosting huge groups of (mostly senior citizens) diners. Service has always been good, so has the food. Also they have the "Dutch Deals" economically priced meals. I mean I got 2 eggs, 2 sausages and a pancake for $7.50. Not bad, I'd say. Very tasty too. This is a west Michigan staple isn't it? I have been coming here on and off my whole life, mostly with grandparents. Good breakfast food, decent burgers, and good fried chicken. Just once on a pickup order they goofed up- I received two wings and a leg,and that was it - the leg was old,also. I read so many positive things about Russ's on social media. I finally tried it. Never again. The Hot Turkey Sandwich was horrible. I have no idea what one would need to do to turkey to turn it into a paste, but that's what was on this sandwich. It looked like sandwich spread or deviled ham--only turkey. If I didn't have teeth, it would have been a convenient choice. The meat was bland and pasty and disgusting. The potatoes were powdered and it was all covered in gelatinous "homemade" beef gravy. I wasn't expecting Ruth's Chris, but I didn't think Big Boy level quality would be such a stretch. read more

Tried the breakfast buffet today at Russ'. I was disappointed to say the least. The food was not refilled very often. When it was the old was popped on top of the new. The potato's were old. The sausage was old and dry. The bacon was under done the biscuits were broken in pieces. Never again will I try the buffet. read more

sometimes you just want a home style meal when you go out, Russ' is the place. they're fairly cheap but as they cater to the older crowd, the food tends to be more plain than exciting. while you won't see anything new or exciting, they do have good food and the soup is pretty top notch. Exactly what you would expect from an old folks home away from home, the food here is standard "family restaurant" style, greasy and unimaginative, a favorite of local geezers who don't have any experience with really great food and don't care because it's so cheap here. Wow the elderly love their Russ'. For the rest of us it is just below Perkins meets Denny's. OK, but not the worst. My perception is that this WMI chain has slid steadily downward in quality over the past few decades. The service, however, at the GH location is beyond awful. Our waitress not only screwed up 2 of our 3 orders, she double charged us for our basket of onion rings appetizer. Example: my 8 year old ordered a BLT with no tomato and no mayo -- what he got was barely toasted warm bread with just bacon and a massive schmear of mayo. My wife clearly gave this special order to the waitress, but whether it was simple incompetence or just not having to care, we'll never know. When dropping off our check she explained to us that she was running around so much because people were pouring in from a winter parade that had just ended. I guess they are not used to having customers. We occasionally go back because the burgers and onion rings are a classic style guilty pleasure, especially the hand-dipped batter on those rings -- brings me back to childhood trips Friday night to Mr. Fables and Bill Knapps. Greasy but great. Twisted I know, but I actually like the weird Reuben Soup, and some of the desserts are pretty darn good too. So it's a mixed bag on Russ' -- like it and dislike it pretty equally -- greasy cheap and worth a visit if you order the right things, have realistic expectations, and get a halfway decent server. read more

The place is a clean old-timer family kind of place. The food isn't anything fancy, but generally good and not expensive. We usually stop for lunch here and get their soup, salad, & baked potato bar, but time got away from us and we ended up here for dinner. We asked if we could still get it and were told no, that they had already closed the bar down. We happened in here on a Weds.evening this time and they had all you can eat fish special with fries, coleslaw and a drink for $9.99. We were hungry and all of us decided to go with the special. I don't often get soda but decided to since it came with it. Opted for the cherry coke which turned out to be coke with grenadine added to it- yuck. I wish when they substituted for the real thing they told you first. I am not a fan of cherry syrup in my soda. The menu listed "cherry coke" with the cherry Coke image. Our server brought out our meals and my husband immediately asked if he could order more fish. She looked a little confused and then said, "sure, how many?" We each got 2 pieces of fish, a little cup of coleslaw and a plentiful handful of fries to start. Everyone managed at least one extra piece of fish. Everything was served hot and tasted good. Our server wasn't exceptionally quick about requests, but we did eventually get what we asked for... Malt vinegar and refills on drinks. My husband took a quick get away to grand haven. This place was across the street from our hotel, so we decided to stop in for breakfast. When we walked in it seemed a bit busy, so we stood by the sign that says please wait to be seated so we could put our name in. Well the hostess passed us at least 4 times before she even looked over to acknowledge that we were stand there. I asked if we were supposed to give our name to be seated and she gave a smart remark answer about did we think we should sit down before the other people, which we didn't, we just wanted to be added to the list. Finally we sit down. Our waitress was very nice and that's the only thing getting this place 2 stars. We both had the breakfast buffet which was one of the smallest I've ever seen. Good: Vegetable Beef Soup, Crayons for drawing while waiting for your meal, coffee is 5 buckaroos but they keep it coming fresh style!!! Bad: tantalize me by having pies on display - I am soooo fat! Absolutely disgusting restaurant. There was a HAIR on the inside bun of the twin burger that my husband ordered. The waitress asked if he wanted to order something else, so he did and they had the audacity to charge us for that item. They did not accommodate whatsoever for the issue! This place is filthy and so outdated. We only went here because we had a good experience a few years ago at a Grand Rapids location. Never again will we go here!! Horrible customer service as well - I think it goes without saying that you comp a meal for the person who receives hair in their food. Our group went here this week and had the most rude people ever to serve. The wait to be seated was long even though there was no one there. The waitress was condescending when we asked for second cappuccino coffees, looking at us like we had just wandered in off the street with only a dollar to our names and saying "That isn't a free refill. You will get charged for it. " We said that was fine, and she said " are You sure?" Really? Yeah, I think we know if we can afford something. They couldn't pay us to go back there again.
