I believe they call it the souther omelet. It not only came with a side of hashbrowns, but included potates in the omelet too!

What's interesting, is that when I was growing up in Spring Lake, we rarely went to Russ'. The only time I recall was when my grandparents were with us. They loved Russ', so that is probably why I considered it an "old peoples" restaurant. Here's the reality.....it IS an old people's restaurant, at least in the morning. As soon as you walk in senior citizens are everywhere. But....so are middle aged couples and small families with kids. I've had a lot of friends and family stay over for the holidays and of course they want to go to breakfast. Many remembered Rendezvous, the last time they were here. Of course that joint is shut down. Also, some wanted Morningstar. For some reason, visitors really like that Morningstar. But I've been insistent that we go to Russ'. We go and they all really enjoyed their meals. The prices are right, the service is great and the food doesn't pretend to be something it's not. Granted, you wont find the fancy Village Baker, Paisley Pig or Morningstar pretentious specialties, but you also won't be gouged at the cashier station on your way out the door. Here's a side note: The last few times I was there, this one guy sat in a booth, drank coffee and sold hats! One of my friends actually bought one. I think they were ten dollars! Also, I joined their rewards program, just give them your phone number. I got 10% off the entire meal!

    Sausage patty and egg.
 Fries, not very good, IMO.
 That's strawberry jam.
Coffee: $2.19. Cheaper than most other restaurants.

My experience with Russ' is consistency. That is a thing so many eateries seem to be missing nowadays, unless you're at a huge FF franchise. Only once have I had to leave Russ's because they had no tables available. They are notorious for hosting huge groups of (mostly senior citizens) diners. Service has always been good, so has the food. Also they have the "Dutch Deals" economically priced meals. I mean I got 2 eggs, 2 sausages and a pancake for $7.50. Not bad, I'd say. Very tasty too. Russ's is old school and that's a good thing.

Service was slow out of the gate -- despite our waiter hanging out with a table he clearly knew. Food didn't fare much better. We ordered the smash burger, which by definition should come with cheese and smash sauce -- that's the whole point of a smash burger, not an add-on. Ours came with neither, and even though it had two patties, we had to pay extra just to add a single slice of cheese. It was incredibly dry, even after adding that cheese and trying table condiments to compensate. The chicken tenders looked appetizing but the chicken itself was stringy and overcooked. Dessert was the low point. We ordered the Oreo cheesecake bites and waited over 20 minutes, only to be served what was essentially liquid pudding in a shooter glass with whipped cream on top. Our server admitted, "I didn't know I was supposed to make it" -- it seems the dessert needed time to set in the fridge and was served before it was ready. While we were waiting we heard another table complaining. The server responded "chill. It's all good". The table responded "actually it's not all good!" Three strikes and we're out. We won't be back.

Yet we immediately saw another family dining with a stroller, and on our way out there was literally a lineup of strollers near the entrance. There also isn't a changing table, so I had to go back to the car just to change our infant. The food was equally disappointing and extremely overpriced. The calamari portion was tiny, my fish was soggy with the batter falling off and cold fries, and my daughter's sweet-and-sour chicken was mostly batter. My husband ordered a 20-ounce ribeye well done and received what was essentially a medium-rare steak. Our server, Jordan, brought the issue to the manager, Amanda, who only discounted the improperly cooked steak by 50%. When my husband asked to speak with Amanda, we were told she was "too busy" to come to our table. Jordan even commented that there were "a bunch of high schoolers in the kitchen." For the prices they charge, the food, service, and management were incredibly disappointing. Easily one of the worst dining experiences we've had. We will not be back.

And I have to say I think this is lack of singular focus on just one type of food and offering too many different items is probably what leads to some of their stuff tasting meh to horrible. First, the shareables. The elote fries were completely bland. The fries themselves were soggy and limp (they're called fries, for crying out loud) and despite there being plenty of toppings, none of the toppings worked together. This dish was absolutely awful. Their chips and guac were fine. The guac was nice and limey. The chips were actually quite crispy and well-seasoned, which made no sense to me given the fries were the opposite. Maybe they outsource their chips. Entree-wise, we had tacos, both meat and vegetarian. Meat-wise, the pulled chicken was awful, super dry meat and yet the tacos were soaked through, I have no idea how they pulled that off, so it was pretty inedible. The beef one, which is a recent special, just tasted...wrong. Not sure how to describe it, other than it just left a bad taste in my mouth. The fried fish was actually okay. For the vegetarian options, the falafel was also very off. Something weird about their seasoning, it's just not like your typical falafel so idk what's going on there. The sweet potato and seasonal veggie ones were pretty good, though. Tortillas overall were fine but when you have to double-stack them, and the fillings still soak through, making actually eating them a form of labor, something is not working with how you are building your tacos. Service - everyone seemed friendly enough. Overall - pick a different taco place to get food from.
