It was after church in the early afternoon yesterday, my wife asked me where do I want to eat. We reached that point in our lives which we do that annoying back and forth process where neither one can think of a place and both are frustrated. I decided to play the wild card and suggest a place I've passed multiple times while on business without stopping in, Rusty Bucket. So, we drive from nearly one end of town to the other just for the chance of a great food experience. Love their building's outside, a comfortable been there forever look to it, a place with painted yet slightly sun bleached corrugated metal siding. Awww, be for real please! You look from the outside like you can talk the talk but will you be able to walk the walk when we bite into some 'cue? We order. Both of us opt for a brisket plate. The plate selection we chose came with two sides and we ordered drinks to boot. Passing the time, I'm sitting in air conditioned indoor comfort at one of their ample indoor picnic tables. The wonderful atmosphere of the place providing appetite inducing anticipation,and I'm thinking "yes, you're looking like a true blue place for 'cue in here." They ask what name to call us by and I opt for Mighty Thor. The server smiles at us while saying "here's your order but I'm not going to call you that." I don't mind. I like to break up the monotony of the day for restaurant folk and leave them something to talk about. I especially liked the friendliness of the people working here. So how was it? The brisket will not disappoint. It shines!!! I completely enjoyed it and would come back again just for the meat alone. I tried and was happy with both of their complimentary sauces (mild and the other with a bit of a heat kick). I liked the mac and cheese side. The cheesy flavor, so good I scraped the bottom of the container with my plastic spoon then swiped it with bread to eat whatever was still clinging to the container. The creamed corn? It was also a good choice too though I'm more curious now about their other sides. I guess I'll have to try the other sides on future visits. Clean restaurant, good food and attentive staff. So, who comes here? It's clearly the locals. Locals with their entire families including two new customers. One of the two newest customers a small business owner himself. Me and my family support Rusty's for years and I can say that today on oct 11 I had the worst experience I've had the brisket is super dry and the potato salad isn't what it usually is . Very disappointed seriously upset about it . read more

The only thing I would order again is the mac n cheese. Green beans=dry Pinto beans=dry Cream corn=sad and not creamy. If you like your turkey with only salt and pepper at a bbq place then you'll be happy. Anyone at home can make better green beans from a can and butter. I see a lot of complaints about the service, so let me give you my opinion on why those are not important for this establishment. When you pull up you see that this area is not the nicest part of town, and you go into this plain restaurant and smell wonderful food. There are no fancy signs, just hand written menu on a white board and a lady behind the counter with a tiny window who takes your order. This place is not dining at the Ritz Carlton, it is blue collar food for people who work hard and want good barbecue. The amount of service needed is to take your money, and get you your order hot and quick. On to the food, I've eaten there twice in the past year and gotten different plates each time. The first time was a traditional brisket and sausage plate with green beans, potato salad, and cream corn. The brisket was very well cooked, but it lacked a good flavor on its own. With the spicy sauce it was above average, with the sausage being on par with Bill Miller's. However, the second trip I got the pork loin and was quite impressed. The pork loin was amazingly tender, and the sauce worked very ell with it. It pulled apart so easily and had just enough flavor on its own to give some contrast with the sauce. Pricewise it is about fifteen bucks for a plate and a drink, more or less depending on the number of sides and meats chosen. It's one of the better barbecue places in town, and convenient to areas around Lackland and Port San Antonio. read more

Beware of jerk owner! I arrived at 11 and was met at the door and yelled at by owner saying, "can i help you! I said yes, im here to eat. He said, your not going to stay are you , is it to go???? I said im here to eat, i go in and see there are 7 empty tables and no customers. Weird experience !! this place is 4 stars When I saw this place I didn't know if it was open or closed. I went inside and I was still not sure every time I go this place is a ghost town. I was greeted as I walked up to the window and took my order. The food: Brisket was nice soft flavorful with the fat trimmed off. Ribs are good, cooked right to get clean bites and not that B.S. falling off the bone .... Sausage was good but there is something that makes them different but I don't know what and stops me from loving them. The sides are all mediocre at best. Bill Millers and Rudys don't cut it so when I want a BBQ fix it's the rusty bucket. I've been to the northside eastside and southside and live in the west side sad to say but S.A. doesn't have ELITE BBQ at least I haven't found it. read more

BBQ is a serious deal in Texas, so 3 stars is by no means a negative review nor is it meant as a knock. This is just good ol' BBQ. Nothing stands out and nothing is subpar. It's just good BBQ. I Came in to pick up lunch for a buddy who is a teacher and doesn't get much time to eat. The folks inside are so damn friendly I wanted to stay and hangout. You get all kinds of people in here, which is awesome because who doesn't like BBQ!? I had the pulled pork, brisket, slaw and beans. The pulled pork was delicious and juicy. Brisket had just the right amount of fat and wasn't too dry--sauce helped out there. The slaw was great--more of German style versus country style which I prefer. Found this place by accident a couple weeks ago and had their Brisket/Spicy Sausage Sandwich and thought it was terrific. Had to come back and tried the Ribs and Brisket plate. DO NOT come here and not try the Ribs! Wow- you don't need sauce and they are so tender. They're the best I've had so far. Great taste! Brisket was cut just right and I asked for some burnt ends. Good stuff. As sides I liked the Spicy Green Beans (not hot just tasty), and the MacnCheese was very cheesy. With a 2 meat plate they give you almost too much to finish both sides. Service is very friendly. Space is informal with picnic tables indoors. Enjoy! Check the hours as M-F they close about 6 pm. read more

The cream style corn was lacking and it tasted as if it was straight from a can with only pepper added. The ribs were large and well seasoned, chicken was moist and flavorful. Brisket and sausage were tasty but did not stand apart from local BBQ. The BBQ sauces were great, one tangy and sweet and the other spicy. We dropped in for lunch and it was OK. The turkey was great but the brisket was just OK, a bit tough and missed the mark for good bbq. Will give them a second chance in the future because the turkey was so good. Re-Visit Review Came back and tried again after new managment reached out on last review to come give it anohther chance. Has some nice flavors. We did the brisket which was tender and nice smoke flavor. Dessert was pecan pie which was good as well as the banana pudding.
