After all these years, I finally made here to Rye. Although I am not eating, I am very pleased with my stop. I am enjoying a Bourbon Renewal and I discussed the menu with the bartender. They are known for there Poutine, which sounds amazing and it's amazingness was confirmed by another couple at the bar. Staff is super freindly, even though I arrived just a few minutes before close. If you have the right desired taste, duck, lamb and other delicious meets, this may be the place for you. read more

Dessert and the Rye selection steal the show at Rye. The housemate, shareable candies are SO delicious and lit us up with child-like wonder. Have some fun and try the Chef's Choice candy bar. Service was also impeccable and delightful. For dinner, we shared the Cesar salad, scallops, poutine, and pasta. The scallops and poutine were the winners for us. The scallops were cooked to perfection! The bolognes was tasty although the sauce was a bit on the thinner side. Solid dinner over all. Pleasant atmosphere and a thoughtful menu. Interesting drinks, including some homemade ingredients. My complaint, though: I've been here twice now and both times there's only one vegetarian entrée, so you're at the mercy of whatever they have. This latest visit I wasn't in the mood for risotto (a one-texture dish that's never been my thing); I had very little I could order. There is precious little vegetarian food on the menu generally, including among the appetizers. The salads are tasty, but it feels a little disappointing to sit down for an upscale dining experience and tuck into a plate of mostly greens (is it just me?). My main ask, then, is that the chef consider Eugene clientele (lotsa veggie folks, no?) and add just one more veggie main to the menu. I would come more often if that were the case. Vegetables, legumes, and grains are inspiring things with a world of possibility. I wish upscale dining culture appreciated them more. The chocolate pot de crème for dessert was really delicious and has pieces of cherries in it. Service was friendly and fast. read more

Great French cuisine and bar drinks from the 1800s prohibition era. Poutine cheese curds, duck fat and gravy over French fries. The special ristoe with shrimp was delicious. *long review* started off great, Erin was attentive but quickly divulged into possibly my worst dining experience I've had in years. Erin got our wine order wrong twice, and then inputted the wrong food order, so on my wife's birthday, she had to watch me eat my entire meal, then I had to watch her eat her meal. After politely asking to have the meal taken care of (which at that point I didn't think was a big ask), she clearly wasn't happy about it. My wife was in the middle of finishing, and she tried to take the plate from her claiming that "because it's comped" you're done. We were nothing but polite and friendly, but it really was an awful experience and will never be back. I will say the food was actually great when it finally arrived, but our experience with Erin is something I wouldn't wish on any customer. May be just be a one off, but experience was so bad it warranted leaving a review. PS. As always the food, drinks and service were exceptional. I am writing this review to commend the owner and her staff on how well the handled a group that was sitting next to my husband and I. As we are all aware, we are being told mask are required in any indoor public space, personally I do not agree with the requirement but will gladly abide so that our local businesses and restaurants can continue to be open. These businesses have already suffered great lost with having to close their doors once. When we arrived we were greeted by the owner and she was on the phone and informed us it would just be a moment till were are seated. The couple behind us went around us to meet the third person in their party. Upon being seated we removed our mask, and the owner turned to the group next to us to politely asked if they had masks and informed them that if they are to get up from their table they are required to wear their mask. One of the women replied that she does not have to wear the mask due to a medical condition. The situation quickly spiraled, the group kept defending that they are not required to wear mask, the owner was calm and tried explaining that OSHA has said that she will be fined and could be shut down for not complying. After a long drawn out conversation it was apparent that they were not going to see eye to eye and the owner asked them to leave. Please remember if you are going out to the grocery or to enjoy a nice sit down dinner these businesses owners are doing as they are told to protect their lively-hood and keep their businesses open. Newly opened (March 2012) by local people with experience at Eugene top end restaurants who know what they're doing and have a passion for getting it right. There was a lot to like here for us. We will be back and recommend Rye to others. CONVENIENT LOCATION Just over the (First Street? Ferry Street?) Bridge and within a couple of blocks to Inn at the 5th and 5th Street Market. Large lot provides ample parking. WELCOMING AND PLAYFUL AMBIANCE / VIBE Interior design is a nice blend of light and dark. Claim to fame here is the bar making authentic specialty cocktails from pre prohibition through modern day and the interior fits that eclectic blend. An "all people are welcome / come as you are" vibe. Mellow music mix on the sound system. There is also sense of playfulness here. As example, there are two unisex loo and one is marked "People" and the other "People Too". Also on the night we were there, one section of the restaurant was roped off with a sign posted that read "Closed - SNAKES!!!" I forgot to ask our server about that. (Maybe Indiana Jones fans? ) We took a seat at one of the copper topped tables in the bar and noted that seating at the front of the restaurant might be a good choice on another day when warmer weather allowed the roll up door there to be open. There is also outside seating on a moderate sized deck. SERVICE Pitch perfect blend of friendly-familiar and professional service was provided by Daniel. He made us feel welcome from the moment we sat down, he could make recommendations on the cocktail and food menu, he perfectly timed the service of the plates we shared and he even enticed us to try the house made chocolates for dessert. The chocolates are excellent and we would have missed out without his encouragement. LIBATIONS We were surprised to find there was no happy hour menu for bar service. No matter, because the cocktails are so reasonably priced ($6). (We'd pay 50% more at least for these in our hometown.) Great quality drinks. The bar is staffed not by a bartender but by a true mixologist if what we had is indication. Cocktail menu is broken up into three parts; pre-prohibition, post prohibition, and "our bright idea" creations. My husband is a Rye whiskey fan and he ordered a Szerac. I ordered their "top secret" libation called The Pink Chick Drink thanks to a fetching Yelp photo. The Szerac (which used herbsaint and not absinthe) was served straight up with ice water back and the ice was that which had been used to shake the drink. Of many Szeracs I've had, can't think of another served like this. The vodka based pink drink (also maybe fresh lemon, juice, simple syrup and amerena cherry) was tasty, although a "once is enough" try for me. This bar is a good place for cocktail fans of any kind of liquor but if you like Gin (as I do) you are in particular luck here for cocktails on the list. The wine list, by the glass and bottle, was short-ish but thoughtfully crafted and reasonably priced. Our by the glass with dinner and were only $7 each. A good value for the quality and size of the pours. MENU / FOOD Menu is where our constructive criticism comes in. Somehow it didn't quite weave in the playfulness of the other elements of Rye. That may have more to do with our dining style than limitations of Rye as we typically prefer to graze our way through small plate options rather than order entrees. If we could put our finger on it, we hoped for more small plates with sort of "surprise us" elements. We also wish there were more options for folks who lean to vegetarian eating as do we. We eat meats on occasion and did here. But limited meatless options may keep away vegetarians and vegans and that is a loss to customers and the restaurant both. That said, the food was delicious. We shared an appetizer of salmon cakes ($9) served with a perfectly dressed arugula, fennel and citrus salad and a creole aioli. We shared an entrée of lamb tagine ($19) with apricots and North African spices with the surprise elements of being served on soft polenta and topped with feta. We liked that the dessert menu was limited to crème caramel, pot au crème (both $5?) and several housemade chocolates ($2 each). We chose a dark chocolate covered salted caramel and a special that day that was like a mini Mounds bar. Delectable . VALUE: Shared appetizer and entrée, two chocolates for dessert, two cocktails and two glasses of wine clocked in at about $57 before tip. A good value for the quality of beverages, food and service. THIS N THAT 1. ACCESSIBILITY: Both the bar entry and the main restaurant entry are accessible. Only accessible parking we saw was at the bar entry. Everything is on one level inside. 2. I decided to give rye a try for my girlfriends birthday and oh man was I disappointed. The ambiance is very stunning and very welcoming. We started off with bread and poutine fries which were absolutely amazing, but when our main dishes came out I was very disappointed not much flavor and A LOT of fat on my pork. I was very disappointed with my meal and to top it all of a price tag of $29 my wallet was hurting. I'm all for paying for a good meal but for almost $30 I really want to be wowed. But my girlfriend got the mushroom pasta dish and it was good but a tad cold when it came out which made the flavor not that grate. If you want to have good drinks in a nice establishment this is your place but for dinner I would recommend something that's worth the high dollar price tag I would probably go somewhere else. read more

We have been wanting to try this place and it did not disappoint. When we first sat down my toddler son sneezed and I could tell that the waitress was a bit uncomfortable being near us. Ate with family of 5 after watching movie on Saturday night. Everyone agreed that the food was cooked well overall but lacked seasoning. I ordered the short rib pappardelle which was good, noodles were cooked perfect, short rib was tender, it just lacked any meaningful flavor, definitely needed salt/pepper. Let's start with the positive: the atmosphere was warm and inviting, and we were seated at a corner table that was intimate and private. The cocktail menu was inspired, and our drinks were creative and well-made. Now, let's talk about what needs improvement: everything else. I really wanted this place to perform well, and the menu seemed to indicate it would. But, unfortunately, as with most places since the pandemic, the service was spotty even though they were not understaffed. My soup was average. My steak was thin and tough, which was a big disappointment. The egg on top, which promised to be runny, was over cooked. The vegetables accompanying the steak were not well-seasoned. My wife's shakshuka had good flavor, but again, the eggs were hard. Our server had very little insight into the menu and dishes, and seemed confused about how the meals should be prepared. Stopped at this cute restaurant on our way from Portland to Crater Lake. We made a reservation to sit outside on the patio. Everyone was very friendly and accommodating. Our server was fun and entertaining, which is how a good server should be. Ordered the French Onion soup which was pretty good, but slightly different from the traditional French onion I was expecting. The duck poutine was pretty good as well. I just like the place. They used to have a New Orleans drink menu but will still make ne if your so inclined. My favorite was the Privateer. I've had some good mask there. The cocktails were excellent, as was the lamb ragu and the soups, however, I must rate it only as 3 stars because the server, while good, was not very friendly. My biggest complaint was of the vegetarian dish, a farmer's pie, with mashed potatoes on top. The chick peas were not cooked well enough and were hard, which resulted in an upset stomach. Business takes me to Eugene periodically and I've driven past Rye a dozen times. I finally had the opportunity to check in out and was pleased. The drinks are great and reasonably priced. I'm a bourbon and whiskey girl so this place hits all the right notes for me. The food is heavy/hearty and delicious and comes with a hefty price tag. I don't pay as much for dining out in downtown Portland, mostly because I hit up happy hours for a more reasonable wallet impact. That brings me to my only complaint about Rye. They don't do happy hour or have much to offer in terms of appetizers so it's not a great place for a group of coworkers to hang out after work--gets too expensive. In my case, I'm usually looking for a spot to eat an early dinner before evening events at U of O so the lack of happy hour really prevents Rye from being an appropriate destination for my purposes. I loved what I had, though. Best poutine ever. Good meatballs. I appreciate that it's not your average menu--some interesting stuff here. Go for a date night. Go if you're on a business trip and can expense the meal. Go if your budget is more ample than mine. LOL It's a great destination; they get the important things right. Just wish they did happy hour. The host greeted us with coldness and exhaustion, and our wait person coldly demanded that we not sit close to one another and even said "is there a reason why you are seated like that? We are loving people and like to be close to one another, which was the only explanation we could give her. I have been here several times and all I can say is it has a weird energy that most can't explain and with so many other wonderful eateries to go to, that's where we are headed. read more

Cheese plate was dropped and no description of what was in front of us. Cocktails were great but we were not asked if we'd like a second until dessert was delivered. We were empty before we finished the cheese plate. A guest at the table next to us had some questions for their server on ingredients and they had no clue and never came back with the info. Myself and two other people went to Rye a month ago. It was the last time we will go back. We should have known things would have gone bad when the hostess was extremely rude when taking my husband and myself to meet our friend already sitting down. I guess maybe it was that time of the month, but her unfriendly attitude was totally unwarranted. We were talking and expected to have some menus dropped off but none came. We were told that we needed to have smart phones to access the menu using a QR code. Well, none of us have smart phones. We have flip phones without internet access.
