This hand roll spot blew me away and I can't wait to return. Although KazuNori has been my go-to handroll spot for years and years, only one or two other places ever came close. Now Sogo took the top place for my favorite! Stopped by Friday for lunch and it was pretty calm so I was able to chat more with the friendly staff. I started off with some Naguryama "Crane Castle" sake in a carafe and it was delicious. One of the best sake I've ever had and this place has a fantastic array of sake available! For food I went with the baked crab crispy rice first and this was amazing. The only place I've found doing a "crab" crispy rice and it was spot on. The rice was so crispy without being oily or chewy. Then I went with the six roll set (subbing the spicy tuna with a toro scallion) and although each roll was absolutely wonderful, my top three would have to be the toro, albacore kari kari, and crab. Each roll has a great amount of warm rice that is so fluffy and flavored well without overpowering the fish. The fish isn't cold either so there isn't a drastic temperature change. My ONLY complaint is that one or two of the rolls had seaweed that instantly got soft and chewy so it was hard to bite through. I'm not sure if these pieces of seaweed were left open when they were about to be used? Did they get moisture? It didn't ruin my experience but I definitely noticed it. BUT I will say what I appreciated is the small strip of seaweed that is tucked on the bottom to keep all the filling in the handroll and not spill out as you bite! I added a salmon, unagi, and lobster hand rolls as well to really get a good sense of the menu. The salmon itself was good but I think the sauce they used (maybe a yuzu based?) was a bit too much and overpowered it. The lobster and unagie however were perfect! The unagi was warm, crispy, buttery while the lobster was rich and delicious. Absolutely great lunch and a place that I am happy to return to. read more

Sogo Roll Bar wasn't exactly what I thought it would be. I was very disappointed with their food. Parking also sucked very badly and we couldn't find parking for quite some time. We drove in circles around the residential area until we found a spot two blocks away. We were seated quite quickly and their servers were very kind. They gave us enough time to peruse their menu and decide what we wanted. My fiancé and I ordered their four roll hand set per person, an order of spicy tuna on crispy rice, and beers each. The beers were decent! I had their Flying IPA which was refreshing. When their crispy spicy tuna came, I thought it looked a bit dejected; the color of the spicy tuna wasn't vibrant and the taste of the fish seemed to be hidden by the Serrano peppers. I wanted to wait for their rolls to fully make my judgement of their food, but I guess that should have told me well enough what to expect. We first had their snapper hand roll and, oh boy, I could not handle the overwhelming amount of yuzu placed on it. I couldn't taste the fish and the seaweed was horrific to eat. I've eaten at other handroll places, and even if I stall for a minute or two, their seaweed exterior is still crispy. Not this place. I couldn't bite it. I thought I was at fault, so I decided for the next roll, that I'd eat it faster. We received our yellowtail roll next. I felt better because it was crispier, but the mayo was overwhelming. Next was a salmon roll, and I couldn't eat half of it due to the yuzu again. I gave up by the time I started eating the spicy tuna roll. My fiancé, being so sweet, managed to swallow it all, but he was also extremely disappointed. Our disappointment was very apparent, as the servers kept asking us how our food was. Being decent people, we told them it was fine, knowingly it wasn't. It's not their fault or the cooks; it's whatever recipe they're following. I should have checked other yelp reviews before eating here, because it was a waste of money. Heavily doused in Yuzu or mayonnaise, I don't understand why they're hiding the taste of fish. You're better off eating elsewhere like KazuNori, ROL Handroll bar in OC, or trying Onori Handroll Bar in Temecula. Don't come here if you know what good handrolls taste like. read more

Found prime parking on a side street across the way (there really is no other option) and strolled on over. There were two people dining on their patio but the bar was fully open. I read multiple reviews of people comparing Sogo to Kazunori, and while they are both handroll bars, Sogo offers more variety in their menu with appetizers and donburi. Also, Sogo's handrolls are uniquely curated with certain sauces and flavors, while Kazu is simply the fish. I love both equally. I opted for the 6 roll set which came with snapper, scallop, spicy tuna, crab, yellowtail, and albacore kari kari. The rolls each came out in a timely manner, one after the other freshly prepared in front of your eyes. Snapper (3.5/5): The fish is super light, but I thought the yuzu lemon sauce was a bit overwhelming in flavor. Scallop (3.5/5): Scallops were fresh and tasty, but mayo heavy... Spicy Tuna (5/5): Yum. Hard to f up spicy tuna tbh, I enjoyed it. Spice level is minimal. Crab (5/5): YUM. If I had to order another roll out of this set menu it would be between this and spicy tuna. Creamy crab with a hint of lemon. Yellowtail (4/5): Solid roll. Fish is fresh and tasty. Albacore Kari Kari (4.5/5): This one is super unique. Having tried a few handroll places, transparently, this place was just ok. I found this place on TikTok and it had rave reviews but it was just ok. The prices were pretty hefty comparatively to the blueprint: KazuNori. I can't help but compare the two. The seaweed here is not as crispy as it is at Kazu, even tho I they make it fresh. A lot of the rolls have the yuzu sauce in them, which I think is a bit overpowering. The mayo is also pretty heavy handed in a lot of the rolls. The spicy tuna crispy rice was just ok as well... I've had better and it didn't come with sauce, but you could dip it in soy sauce if you like. The cucumber salad was pretty good tho. I liked the sake flight and the service was fine and we were seated pretty quickly. The staff is super attractive, but I think the quality of the rolls for the price didn't that worth it. Try it out and see for yourself, but I honestly still prefer Kazu. The saving grace is the location is super nice, the ambiance and decor is cool, and the staff is pretty attractive. This is a pretty solid hand roll spot that's intentionally designed. The spicy tuna crispy rice is really good, the rice comes out piping hot and sticky, and the fish is cold. They add a small piece of seaweed closing the bottom of the hand roll, which helps to keep everything in the roll. They use quality fish and sauces that pair well. I just wish the seaweed was more crispy and the spicy tuna roll had more of a kick. Service was really polite and prompt, overall we had a good experience here. read more

I have only had the absolute best experience the 5+ times I have been. Everyone is kind, the food is excellent and its such a cute spot. Sogo has lately been my go to sushi fix spot. We order the spicy tuna crispy rice (Obviously) and the 6 rolls, we ask for it cut and my husband and I share that! its SOOO tasty. Don't substitute anything! The red snapper, as I usually would sub that was highly recommended to keep because its a fan fav, and they were totally right. It's amazing. Like most people in California, I love sushi... and like most people, I'm far from an expert. Luckily for me, a friend of mine was visiting and his friend was an expert. This explains why, before said expert arrived, we got your Spicy Tune Crispy Rice, a dish done much better at Katsuya Brentwood. Luckily, we weren't paying Brentwood prices, so we were satisfied with what we got. Once said expert arrived, things got serious. We got some fancy sake (KAMOSHIBITO KUHEIJI 'SAUVAGE) and hand rolls (recommended over cut rolls by said expert). I got the six roll set (snapper, scallop, yellowtail, spicy tuna, crab & albacore kari kari). It comes out two at a time, because (per expert), you have to eat them quick otherwise the crispy nori becomes soggy. I liked the albacore and scallop the best. Gotta say, after all these years of eating spicy tuna, not a fan. The service was good. I would highly recommend sitting in the outside patio, especially given the weather in LA is usually perfect. Pricing is on the higher side but not prohibitively expensive, especially given the quality involved. Parking ... yikes... vaya con dios. If you're one of the lucky few, you'll find a nearby street meter, otherwise you'll be driving around in circles! Be very careful about the neighborhoods, given how fancy the area's gotten, I wouldn't bother deciphering the mile long parking restrictions sign... just assume they don't want you to park near their houses, they will ticket and tow you, and you will end up paying massive fines for what should be a perfectly pleasant dining experience. read more

I have been to a couple of other hand roll places before, but this was my first time visiting Sōgo. We booked a reservation for the indoor bar seating through Resy and were promptly seated upon arrival. I will warn that the bar seats aren't the most comfortable nor stable, so just something to keep in mind. Their pre-selected hand roll sets offer the best deal for your money, so went with a 4 and 5 roll set. They allow you to swap out 1 hand roll from the set menu and substitute it for a different roll (with the exception of lobster which incurs an extra charge). We started with the spicy tuna crispy rice as our appetizer and the taste and texture were amazing! They nailed the crispy, yet structurally sound rice base & the spicy tuna was well flavored for a delicious bite. For hand rolls, I went with the 4 roll set - salmon, spicy tuna, toro, and yellowtail (swapped this for the snapper). I love yellowtail, so it was no surprise when that roll landed in my favorites, but I was pleasantly surprised by the salmon, which had an unexpected brightness due to some yuzu flavoring. The rice was nice and moist without being too mushy, and I appreciated how the chefs added an extra piece of seaweed at the end of the roll to prevent the contents from spilling out when bitten. I also loved how they put an extra bit of seafood at the opening of the roll to ensure that the first bite includes protein. I'm not sure if it's because we shared that it was our first visit, but the person who appeared to be the manager was very kind to offer us an order of mochi ice cream on the house. They offer both outdoor and indoor seating, and I've never had trouble finding a table for dinner service. I've also observed several people getting to-go orders when I've dined there. They offer a variety of hand and cut rolls, and I noticed during my recent visit that they have donburi on their menu. You can order rolls a la carte or as part of a set menu, and I learned that they recommend you get cut vs. hand rolls if you are not eating at the bar (though ultimately the choice is yours). The Yellowtail Hand Roll was good as well, but not my favorite due to the mayonnaise-y situation (not at all bad, just not what I was expecting). Still tasty, flavorful, and of great quality. The lobster roll was definitely my favorite, the star of the show; something about the squeeze of lemon within really added a ~je ne sais quoi~ to the dish. We really enjoyed the spicy tuna crispy rice with a great amount of tuna and the albacore with a lot of crispy onions -- our favorite! As for hand rolls, we ordered yellowtail, toro, spicy tuna, and salmon. The salmon roll was amazing with a citrus sauce. As for the other rolls, we wish they had sauces as well or more of them. Food is fresh and flavorful. This place has a team member who is really rude. She is the first person you see when you enter. No greeting other than asking if you have a reservation. She really puts a damper on the entire experience because you mostly deal with her throughout your entire experience. When she hands you the menu she immediately asks if you know what you'd like to order. From beginning to end you feel rushed by her consistent questioning if you'd like to add on more before you receive your first hand roll. Usually, a server tries to add on later on in your experience. We also ordered the unagi crispy rice with avocado puree on top, which was super unique. I came here for an anniversary dinner and left wishing there was more to this place. I made a reservation through Resy and marked that it was me and my girlfriend's anniversary. I never expect anything from marking these options, but, saying Happy Anniversary would have been considerate. Because why have the option to mark it at all. Maybe because it was not busy, but I was trying to have a conversation and the handrolls just kept coming out one after the other. After finishing a handroll, another one already appeared on the table. The nori was not very fresh and chewy. The fish itself was flavorful. I loved how they topped the fish when they wrapped it. I'd come back for this and the Scallop (8) Hand Roll since it was so creamy. Some key differences, Kazu Nori has a great system, they get you in and out and very satisfied. Their staff is well trained in making these handrolls quickly. Sogo is a bit slower. Only one person was making handrolls for dinner and another one was assigned to making to go orders. Even though they were working non-stop, we didn't get our rolls until a 20 after ordering. The rest of the staff seemed aimless. I had to flag them down for water multiple times. They were a bit all over the place too compared to Kazu and more confused than friendly. I do love the space at Sogo. It's casual, modern, bright and elegant. Kazu is more dim and romantic, but you really do feel rushed out since they work so quickly. I'd come back, not for the set menu, but for the snapper and the scallop. The other rolls were very forgettable and the Albacore kari kari was pretty salty. I do love that they pack the rolls with generous amounts of seafood including the ends. That was a nice touch.
