    NEW! Bok-You roll $23.50

*** 2025 review #36 *** We stopped in for a little snack and truly enjoyed the friendly service, shoutout to Sarah! Had a delicious roll. Parking in the back.

Pretty decent Japanese food with good sized portions. Parking around this area is really hard to find, unless you valet at the restaurant for $7. My bf and I both ordered a bento box and the food was good; the teriyaki beef and spicy albacore roll were my favorites, very flavorful, beef was tender and the albacore was a little spicy. Teri chicken was alright, a little dry though. Tempura veggies were also solid, even after a 30 minutes drive home. However, at the end of the meal, my bf found a STAPLE inside his roll? It think it was in the roll too because he spit the staple out after eating his food. They staple the to-go bags together so I think one somehow fell into the food. We opened the stapled bags before opening any of the food boxes, so not 100% sure how it managed to get into the food.. Unfortunately this was found at the end of our meal, at home so there was not much we could do.

Appetizers, Salads, Sushi, and Fresh Rolls Menu - March 2025

Found this place when we were in the area and craving sushi. Yelp reviews looked decent so we decided to try it out. It's a cute little restaurant along a street with other restaurants and bars. Parking can be tough but they have parking in the back for $7 with validation. Food overall was just okay. For the price and quality it wasn't a good value. The fish in my chirashi didn't taste high quality and wasn't very fresh. The bento box was also just okay. Service was fine, the restaurant wasn't very crowded on a Friday night. Overall it was a mediocre experience, I wouldn't come back again and don't recommend.

I really did enjoy dinner here at Starfish. A friend and I met other friends for dinner reservations at around 7pm on a Saturday. I wouln't say it was packed but it was almost at capacity. There is seating inside and outside. The staff was very friendly, fast, attentive and just overall great. Started with some soft shell blue crab, japanese shrimp dim sum and shishito peppers. The peppers were average. The dim sum was a nice pleasant steamed dumpling shumai almost which was good. But the star was the soft shell blue crab. Lightly fried and did not taste like the ocean / fishy. It actually tasted like crab and it was very light. Comes with a vinegar based dipping. We had 6 rolls. Havana, Ex Girlfriend, Mango, Popcorn scallop, Dynamite, Fire Salmon. All rolls were good and nothing wrong with them. The stand outs were Ex Girlfriend was great. Doesnt have rice I believe. Well sauced and just overall tasty. Mango was a great and different from a lot of rolls especially at other sushi restaurants. This is very lively and uplifting in flavor. The Fire Salmon is great if you enjoy salmon and umami. It's not that spicy or spicy at all but have a pleasant chili oil that brings everything together. Great overall experience over at Starfish. Oh yeah lastly I did have some nigiri. Yellowtail which was good. And the O-Toro was great. Literally melted.

First time here and all the fish was very fresh and portions were generous too. This was probably the best roll i've had the yellowtail melted in my mouth. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Restaurant was also very clean inside[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] and the service was great. They kept checking in on me and made sure i had everything i needed

After my trip to Japan, I set an unfairly high bar for sushi back in LA. Starfish cleared it. The nigiri was the star: perfectly seasoned rice at the right temperature, topped with fish that was fresh and flavorful. The yellowtail and snapper stood out most, both with clean, strong umami and pristine texture. Beyond the nigiri, the crispy rice with spicy tuna and the hungry roll are worth ordering every time. Their service was also excellent. Food came out quickly, and the staff was warm and attentive throughout. It's the full package, and the closest thing to Japan I've found in this city.

Great service and great food. The restaurant is not very big, but we were able to get a table for 6. That is probably the biggest group size I would go with. I enjoyed the 3 item combo. We got the fried sesame chicken, grilled salmon, and sukiyaki. The portions were generous, and everything tasted great. I was worried the salmon might be dry but it was not at all. I didn't care for the baked crab roll (which is imitation crab, I expected that though). My partner liked it. There's paid parking or street parking that can be a little challenging. I also came here many years ago (maybe 15 years ago??) and had forgotten about it. Some of the photos attached to my review were from back then, and I guess were saved in Yelp all this time.

This is a small hole in the wall japanese place. The thing is - this place is located in central LA. Coming on a weekend, did not see a line or specks of human there. The sushi roll on average is about a bit mid range of rolls when there are cheaper places out there. The amount of food that they give is a medium amount of rice to fish ratio. I happen to be lucky and got a spot right outside (street parking) which may take a while. its quite, and i mean they are good, but as an avid sushi goer, this place was okay. It seems like a great sushi place for those who are around the hollywood region with pricier sushi but I have been to places that the fish rice ratio is more proper, and also the cost is not that expensive. The place did not also seem too clean so that was also an issue.

Starfish is a quality, hole-in-the wall local sushi joint strategically located on Vermont in the heart of Los Feliz. Our work group of four went for a quick lunch on a Monday morning. On arriving, we entered the small restaurant, with covered tables outside. We were quickly greeted and given menus. I ordered the 2-item Bento Box - enough for most people for lunch - which included a Miso Soup, Salad, Rice, and two items - in my case a Salmon Teriyaki and Spicy Tuna Roll ($19.50). The soup and rice were unremarkable and the salad fairly middling, although the spicy tuna roll was fresh, the tuna quantity generous, and with just enough kick. The salmon was similarly generous and came in a rich teriyaki sauce. The service was affable and quick. We received our food in less than 10 minutes (most welcome on a brief lunch break), although it did come piecemeal, and the check a little slow. Great credit to the owner, however, who offered us, gratis, a green tea (?) ice cream surrounded by a flaky, rich, lightly fried dough. Please see photo. I've honestly never had anything like it before; it's not on the menu, but it was delectable; smooth cool ice cream juxtaposed with the flaky, cookie-like exterior and chocolate sauce. The owner went so far as to divide it and serve it to us himself. Perhaps it's an experimental new dish? Perhaps the owner liked us? Amidst the stellar Japanese accent I could not tell, but the dish was as delectable as it was mysterious. Floored. +1 Service, +0.5 Food, overall +1 Star. The inside is clean, the outside breezy, and in a nice area with good foot traffic. Prices are average, with $20 a reasonable tag for a trendy area and a generous-sized lunch. If you're in Los Feliz and looking for good sushi, a good price, and a stellar owner, look no further than Starfish! Food: 4.5/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Service: 5/5 Value: 4/5

And service was also not great - the server brought out a drink that we didn't order by mistake, told us we could have it on the house, but ended up charging us for it anyway. Had already left when we noticed it. Also told us cake fee was $10, but ended up charging us $20. Food-wise, very hit or miss. The unadon, hamburger steak, and curry udon were all really good, but the yakitori skewers tended to be disappointing. The Tsukune was dry, the Negima was quite bland. The Miso Black Cod was also quite overdone, became quite rubbery when served and also was cold. Overall, I would not come back again, or recommend it. Given the price point, I expected that the food and service left much to be desired.

The menu now leans much more toward fine dining, and the prices definitely reflect that. As someone who's more of a casual diner and really enjoyed the previous menu, this new direction just wasn't for me. The staff were very kind and took the time to explain all the changes, which I appreciated. However, we ordered about six dishes and were surprised at how small the portions were. On top of that, most of the items were unfortunately pretty bland. Sadly, I won't be returning, and I really miss the old menu.

It was as good as I remembered, and probably even better. I can't imagine letting another eight and a half years pass without going back. The only negative is that parking is either difficult or $15, which feels bad in a pretty quiet residential area. Better to take a car in any case, so you can enjoy the extensive selection of sakes. We shared a full-sized bottle, I forget which but I think it was a junmai daiginjo, and it was lovely. Tsubaki is such a nice, welcoming little izakaya. Service is great, the atmosphere warm and easy. You just want to sit back and drink at a leisurely pace. The food is excellent, with a robust menu of creative Japanese food. We shared everything, starting with a stellar kanpachi crudo with ume ponzu, shiso, sweet onion and habanero pickles, and furikake. My favorite dish of the night was the tsukune katsu. I love tsukune, the tare-glazed chicken meatballs you'll find in any yakitori place. This was my first time having them in katsu form, panko-fried and served over cabbage with Kewpie mayo and tonkatsu sauce. The chawanmushi was delicious, silky steamed egg custard topped with Dungeness crab, truffle salt, and mitsuba. Likewise the kinoko tempura, an array of maitake, shiitake, and enoki mushrooms fried light and crispy, with yuzu shichimi and tentsuyu for dipping. We got a skewer of bonchiri from the yakitori menu, delightfully chewy bites of charcoal-grilled jidori chicken tail. Finally, a plate of yakisoba, pan-fried noodles with house-cured Peads & Barnetts char siu, pickled green garlic, and cracklin. We got the hojicha parfait, and it was more or less my ideal dessert. Roasted green tea soft serve with sesame black sugar burnt miso and candied walnuts with cornflake dust. Cold, light, sweet. I could eat a whole one by myself pretty much any time. After nine years in business, Tsubaki feels like an Echo Park institution, and the kitchen is as strong as ever. This was a wonderful dinner, one I hope to repeat soon, with more sake, more yakitori, and more hojicha parfait.

The skewers are pretty tasty but too pricy when I know that at the same price Nan Ban Kan in Sawtelle just does it with 20% better flavor, 30% less wait time and maybe 10% cheaper. Didn't like the fried rice at the end. It'd be better if only they kept the braised beef with the sauce. The fried rice is way too dry to enjoy on its own. The Wagyu katsu you cook on a hot stone at the table which I liked as an interactive dish. The Wagyu cheeseburger was dripping with juice but still had those crunchy edges. The Uni pasta was beautiful & delicious. The Chimichurri prawns I could eat multiple plates of- the shell comes sliced down the middle so you just have to peel it off. For dessert we ordered the Kodo basque cheesecake & Miso chocolate torte. I love a basque cheesecake & the sesame crumble added great texture. The miso chocolate torte made me wish I ordered my own. Everything from start to finish was amazing, it's hard to pick favorites. Parking- valet $13

Food is delicious, drinks are good, and parking isn't hard to find if you're willing to walk a little. The design kinda dark inside, but the patio is always nice. The best part? I can be in and out in less than an hour if I wanted!
