typical little Chinese cafe. part of their menu is American, and the rest is Chinese. i ordered Udon noodles and shared an order of Chinese Broccoli with my cousin. the Udon was okay, but I can't complain since this isn't a Japanese place. it was satisfactory considering it was cold and late and we just wanted to get something hot and soupy. also, the Chinese Broccoli did not look like Chinese Broccoli, but tasted fine... so who knows, we assumed it wasn't even Chinese Broccoli. overall, okay place. useful for late night or wanting a simple tummy filler, but not necessarily good food. read more

Came here after a night of drinking on a Saturday. It was pretty empty when we walked in.. only a few tables were taken so we got seated right away.. it was weird cause I was used to tons of older Chinese people there and the workers also being older but that night it was full of young people and young workers.. guessing the owners sons and stuff? Was going in there quite often, cause of the convenience, sorry to say not any longer! Owner only caters to his friends & customers of his dance club above the cafe. have you ever heard of refill your coffee only after you drank the last drop. I go to Denny's & take one sip & they come to refill the dam thing! Food ain't graet & way high, got the steak special, & you'll agree with the "where's the beef saying, a thin slice of who know's what! looks like they took one steak & fileted into 3 steaks & call it the special. waitresses trained to work their ass off, boss is always sitting there having tea or coffee & eagle eyeing the staff. He's got a head waiter or something that thinks he god's gift to waiters, everthing he says goes! Stay away, for that amount of $$$$ & leave hungry, better off going to taco bell/panda express! wish yelp had a negative star! ordered a cup of clam chow. to go & it took 45 mins & was no more than 8 oz. & costs more than $4.00. should've walked up to safeway & bought two cans! So, I would say that S&E is a step up from ABC cafe on noriega. If you want to escape the firm clutches of ABC without having to escape Sunset then you should try S&E. I'll have to use ABC as a comparision tool on this review. Same type of food, but with a much cleaner and renovated environment. S&E certainly doesn't close as late as ABC though. The food here is much prettier with more garnishings...a sprinkle of cheese here and a dash of parsely there. They've gone with a cream of carrot soup instead of the vegetable soup you'de get from ABC. I actually just ordered a cup watermelon juice (quite decently sized I would say) while my friend ordered the NY steak special posted on the front chalkboard, and a porkchop and fish meal. I was surprized the NY steak meal came with two large shrimp wrapped in bacon. And again, both dishes were quite nice to look at when compared to the meals from ABC. Both my friends enjoyed their meals and said it was very tasty. The guy on the table next to us had ordered some type of fried fish meal but told the waitress that it was too salty and she quickly told the chef and aksed him what he'd like in place of it. that was quite nice. This review is getting way too long...so to sum it up, S&E = Hong Kong Style cafe, cleaner than ABC, A SLIGHT variation from ABC, a LITTLE more expensive from ABC. read more

Stay away!! This restaurant is filthy. I was invited to a private party at S&E. They have this private room upstairs. It's like a lounge room at end of the this hallway where there are stairs access to the kitchen and up to a patio where people would smoke. The place is smelly and the back access stairs are greasy, sorry and full of cigarette butts. You can find employees squatting in front of the business smoking away ignoring the no smoking sign. read more

all i can say is that this place is not my kind of food. service was nice but due to my preference, the food was not my favorite.

My second time eating here occurred on a Friday night. I ordered the pork cutlet with spaghetti and salt and pepper chicken wings. The food was average. The chicken wings was on the salty side. The portion of the pork cutlet with spaghetti was huge and their price was on the higher side. Complimentary soup was served when I ate there for the first time during lunch several month ago. it's a good neighborhood cafe. i wouldn't go out of my way to eat here unless i was in the area. they are open late and the food is mediocre. the menu is extensive, but i recommend sticking to the basics like porridge or noodles. i prefer this place over ABC on Noriega. read more

My fiance and I come here quite often when we feel like eating HK cafe food. We usually come here late at night and get excellent service. We love that each of their set meals comes with bread, soup, tea, and dessert. Their baked and rice dish portions are large enough to split into halves of thirds which is a great money-saver. I recommend their Ma's Special and baked rice/spaghetti dishes. read more

Love their food love their food!!! I've going to this eatery for 10 years now and I've seen it coming from a very family style cafe to a recent more comtempo mid-end cafe..I can see they've put into a lot of thoughts in their dishes and the quality of the service and food. I especially like the way the marinate their chicken...it tastes always sooooo different and tender and juicy! Their portuguese sause and the white creamy sauces are the best..I skip the marinara/tomato sauce on any of my food though..Too bad they are now only open after 5pm and close on certain weekdays..I wish they could change their schedule back to how it was..like serve lunch on weekends. read more

The S&E has a new, improved, and expanded menu that is greatly appreciated. All I need to make me happy is French toast at 2 A.M. The place is really clean and the guy I assume is the owner is always chilling with some group in the back, which makes him look like a pimp. Everytime I order here it is a gamble because the food is different everytime, but I cant bring myself to complain because I eat there so often. I am the only non-Asian customer I have seen there, so it may only be a problem for me, but a few waitresses sometimes don't understand my order. The news in the background always seems to spark good conversation. I cant say many things bad about a place three blocks from my house, open until early morning, and pretty cheap. My favorite place to go, sometimes I try to go around 4PM since they open at 5, and they were happy to open earlier for my boyfriend and I. Menu has a variety of mostly H.K food, most of which are very delicious. Price is affordable, depending on which plate. Love everything about the restaurant! read more

Disappointing for four reasons. 1). It was my sons graduation day and he wanted prime rib. We called S &E and we asked do you have prime rib. They said "yes". We asked how much. They said around $21.00. We went there and ordered prime rib and they said "we don't have prime rib tonight." I was mad and disappointed. I even told them someone here said that you have it. 2) When it was time for dessert, the waitress said we have red bean soup. We asked is this included in our meal. She said "I will give this to you." Keep in mind this Hong Kong style restaurant which I think dessert is included. 3) We got our bill, it showed the cost of the meal, tax and total. I noticed the gratuity section showed the gratuity was based on the meal. So I gave them my credit card. When I got the bill back to sign, the gratuity was higher because it was based on the total bill. 4) The soup was very bland. The oxtail and the beef tongue were not cooked long enough so they were tough. My sons steak was good but for the price $18.50, it was thin. Aweful~~! I've never been to such a bad-servie place!!! I stongly suggest never go to this place!!! That was the first time I went there. One of my friends ordered something to eat, and I just ordered a cup of coffee coz I was not so hungry. The waitress kept asking us what else we wanted to eat. She showed unpleasant faces to us just because we didn't order so much food. The food is ok, I just can't be tolerant such bad service, furthermore, she never smiled as I could see. I would always pass by this place because I would always go to sushi raw and this place is across the street from it. The location is a little off from the busy street but it's close enough. Thought I would give it a try since I love Chinese food at cafés. I ordered the stir fried flat noodle with beef and my bf ordered a Macau baked porkchop over rice. They also gave us their soup of the day, which was Russian borscht. I never tried it but I'm glad I did because I am so in love with it. I even drank all of my bf's and the guy gave me a complimentary one since it didn't come with my meal but it came with my bf's. The food was really good at a decent price and had huge portions. The waiter was so friendly and energetic that it kind of rubs off on you. I will definitely return to try their other items and they are opened till 2am, which is great for those late night hungers. Their lemon iced tea is also very good. It's just lemon iced tea but at smiling house, which is a block away, their lemon iced tea tasted like a Lipton tea bag and a lemon. It lacked flavor. Haha, well I guess I'm really no use with this review since I didn't order anything from here. Two of my friends and I hung out really late one night and drove around sunset to see what was open for a quick bite. The only place we discovered at the time: S & E Cafe. We didn't know when they closed, but we took our chances and parked on the street nearby. We realized we got there 10 minutes before they closed. We were the only guests and we were surprised that they actually let us order still even when they were pretty much all set to go. Luckily for them, only one out of three people ordered something. My friend ordered (the always safe dish) baked tomato sauce over porkchop, rice and egg. I took a few bites, and it was as good as I thought it'd be. Personally, that's one of my favorite dishes at Western-style Chinese restaurants. You really could never go wrong with that dish. Anywho, good to know that the next time I come here, I should come wayyy before 2 AM lol. read more

after the remodel, i came to this place a lot to eat on late nights. but one night while i was eating, i noticed a hole in one of the panels of the drop down ceiling and i saw a RAT jump out of there and onto the rail that is right under the ceiling! needless to say, i haven't went back there since! read more
