This spot is legit! Authentic, unique, tasty, healthy food and great service. The kizhi paratha is unique in terms of presentation and taste. It was quite good. The chatti choru is also unique, I have never seen it on the menu anywhere. It is like a thali (full meal) but served in one big bowl as opposed to plated separately. It was really good. Service was excellent! Everyone was attentive and friendly. Rahul was outstanding. He kept checking up on us constantly and was so nice and courteous. He deserves a raise and a promotion. I've been here a few times before but mostly done take outs and delivery. I'll tell you each time the food has been super delicious. I'd like to go eat at the restaurant to experience what that's like as well, they have good amount of seating. And the service for take outs have been pretty fast too and mind you they have a lot of orders coming in. Our deliveries were pretty great too. The food comes in a nice bag and maintains the heat. My favorite obviously is the chati choru that comes with rice, different gravies, sides, appetizers and papad. It's very homey, super filing and simply delicious. I've tried it so many times, each time the menu is different but never disappointing, always fresh and tasty! I also like their mushroom dish and their cauliflower fry! The parotas were soft and wonderful too. The chicken curry was alright but was pretty good with the parota, I wanna try other dishes so I can review those as well. This is an upscale South Indian restaurant with great decor, focusing on Tamil specialties. The staff was from Kerala and very welcoming. We tried the chatti chor and chefs special chicken biryani. The portions were pretty huge contrasting usual South Indian fare, we had to box the biryani. Presentation is beautiful and food was out quickly . Taste was homey, with healthy flavors but not typical Kerala cuisine. Never a Dal Moment North vs. South isn't a question most people ask when they're in the mood for Indian cuisine. In fact, most diners probably don't know the difference. The Cliff Notes version is Northern cuisine, which is what most Americans would equate to as "typical" Indian food, features naan, yogurt, and cream sauces, and it is primarily carnivorous in nature. Southern Indian food is usually vegetarian, uses coconut, dal (lentils), and rice-based dishes. The latter is what Saapaaduu, South San José's newest Indian restaurant, brings to the table. The Good: *Plenty of parking in a private lot *Woman-owned business *Halal™ meats *Great place for vegetarians, as almost the whole menu is Veg-head friendly. *Shared outdoor dining area with other businesses; I'm not sure if they'd serve you out there, as my guess is you'd have to get it to go and then eat it outside. *Order and pay via a QR code at each table *Mango Lassi was deliciously creamy, good mango flavor, and not too sweet. *Parotta is fantastic. Think if Naan and a Croissant had a baby... Oh yeah... *Chatti Choru is like the Southern Indian Food sampler plate, as you get a little bit of this and a little bit of that to try. I added on the Goat ($2 extra), and it must've been $1/bite because that's literally all I was given was two fantasticly delicious bites. :( *The food isn't overtly spicy but builds throughout the course of your meal as you'll find yourself sniffling a little more after every bite. *Cauliflower Malli Fry was delicious and fried up perfectly crisp to dip in the concomitant chutney and raita. *The Kizhi Parotta might be their dish that puts this place on the map, as it was utterly fantastic. It's essentially a Indian tamale that comes wrapped up like an "Indian Christmas present," as somebody eloquently stated. Once all the wrappings have been cast aside, what's presented before you isn't the prettiest dish you'll have seen, but once you dig in, it's almost like an Indian Chicken Pot Pie. The spicey saucy, tender chicken is enveloped in the aforementioned Parotta to make for one incredible bite after another. The Meh: *A few of the sampler plate items were heavily underseasoned, and overall, I felt a lack of salt in almost all the dishes, which is kinda rare for Indian places. *Cold drinks are prewrapped in boba cups, which is great if you're getting to go, but if you're dining in, we felt it was a little strange, not to mention wasteful. The Ugly: *Service was well, mediocre at best. Everyone seemed to be very awkward and acted like this was all their first day. From the hostess (whom assuming is one of the owners) who didn't know what to do when we asked for a bigger table, to the "waiters" who clumsily dropped dishes wily-nily about the table to terrible kitchen timing with them bringing out the appetizer after the entrées had already been delivered. There was even a strange discussion with the aforementioned hostess/owner about how we wanted the side of rice served? What the what? It's a side. I want it on the side. So, yeah...0_o I also have to say that we never really felt welcomed the whole time. I'm not sure if we were catching a vibe, or maybe we're just not their usual clientele, and that threw them off. Last I checked, I think I'm brown enough to attend an Indian restaurant without a special pass. Conclusion: Saapaaduu is distinguishing itself from other Indian restaurants in the South Bay by specializing in southern cuisine, and they deliver at a very reasonable price point. While there's still some growing pains to endure, I still say to get out of the Indian northern comfort zone and try some good ol' southern Indian comfort food. read more

We went here on a Saturday evening after our hike at around 6:30pm and managed to secure a table for 4. We ordered ginger lemonade, mutton sukka and chicken fry as appetizers. The food came to us pretty quickly and was overall tasty. For main course , we ordered chicken kottu paratha, egg and vegetable kotthu paratha as well as chicken chettinad and roomali rotti. We enjoyed the food thoroughly hence giving 3/5. The place is average sized and had a nice looking atmosphere elephant decor at the entrance that we saw many folks snapping a pic with. The attitude of the staff was very intense and they took away our child seat that we were holding on for our friends kid and gave it away to someone else without asking so we thought that was a bit strange. After seating us they also kept coming and rushing us to finish the order quickly. Understand they are pretty busy but we dint appreciate being rushed. Hence removing 2 stars. We were pleasantly surprised with this new place on the block. The menu is pretty simple. We started with 2 appetisers- the cauliflower malli fry and the road style mushrooms, ordered the thali (veg chattichoru) for a part of 4 and also paneer khizi paratha. The thali came out first. It was a very interesting presentation- in a large bowl. The food tasted grah and flavourful. Next came our appetiser. It was okay but by the time this came out we were already finished with our thali (almost 30 mins after ordering it) And then came out the paratha dish- it was just okay. I wasn't a fan of the flavours plus I was already full by this time. Our other starter hadn't come out yet so we asked if we could cancel and they politely obliged. Great change to the South Indian meal experience in South Bay. Here's what we tried, Satti Choru - A bowl with seeraga samba rice, kootu, Poriyal and kozhambu over it. Sambar, Rasam and Curd are also offered in small cups on the side. Every dish was delicious, homely, mildly spiced and non greasy. A bit pricey (17$) for the portion size and lack of dessert. Overall 4.5/5. Cauliflower Malli Fry (5/5) - a mouthwatering snack. Balanced with spices, this is hard to resist after a bite. Kizhi Parotta (16ish$) - 3/5 Wrapped in a banana leaf Mellow in flavor, this parotta dish wasn't upto mark. It was neither Kothu parotta nor flaky parotta. More like a Kerala dish and not a chettinad one. Would love to go back for the meal and Roadside Kaalan. read more

Where do I even begin? This place was such a great find, and tucked away in a unsuspecting little plaza! It was very busy during the lunch hour and had a short wait of around 15 minutes. We were quickly seated and asked to use the QR codes you order and pay immediately! I thought this was very convenient and also the service was quite good! I came for the dosas, but was told that they only serve it after 5 PM, so I'll be back! I really enjoyed the flavor of all of my plates. The curry was delicious and the parotta was fluffy and warm! This is a new restaurant claiming to be giving authentic unadulterated food from Tamil Nadu state. Name of the restaurant means meal in Tamil language. We were there on a Saturday night around 7.45, very crowded and huge wait. we were told we may not get a chance for a table and were given the option of takeout. Our family decided there was no point in going all the way down just to get a take-out. Let us see if we get a table, or else we made an alternative plan to go for a different restaurant. We finally got a table. We were the last one. One thing for sure is that the management is not experienced, and their design of the menu and how they ran the show was very much evident of that, and several customers were mad and walked out too, due to that. The ambiance was ok, nothing other than the picture of the colorful elephant in the front. See the picture for reference. We ordered as below, and none of them were piping hot, as expected. If it was freshly made? Rotukadai kalan aka streetside mushrooms I should say this is the best of all, though not very hot, but really tasted good. Kothu Parotta vegetarian It was like veggie Parotta, rather than soaked in sauce (that is how it is made), it had vegetables and very little sauce to make any impact. It can also use a little more seasoning. Kizhi Parotta vegetarian. Very nice package but very hard to consume due to a presentation and you need a knife to eat. Panner was good. The sauce was there, but not enough, nor did it have a punch. Egg curry It's just ok, not flavourful, and comes with only 2 eggs. Rumali Roti They are supposed to be tossed thin dough that is put on the griddle, but this was pressed thin, just like tortilla. Not authentic! Parotta Ok, there's nothing much to say. Overall management was poor due to lack of experience, and a lot can be done to improve management, menu, and flavor. They have the vision, but execution is lacking. When I come here I get some variation of the same order-- chicken 65, chatti choru with chicken, and/or the kizhi parotta with extra raita. Kerala cuisine has taken my heart and left nothing behind. The chicken 65 is flavorful, crispy, and spicy with all the charm needed to get me to order leftovers to go. Chatti choru has an amazing amount of variety and quantity for a good price. You get a little taste of a bunch of things, including some sambar, tamarind water, and raita. A symphony of flavors cascading on your tongue, from the pickles' salty-sour chorus, the chicken's spicy-savory melody, and the crunch of the cracker's percussions in your mouth. Always a good bet. But the star of the show? The love of my life? (oh boy I'm gonna be single forever...) Chicken Kizhi Parotta. Extra Raita. As much as I can get. They have two varieties of Raita, a yogurt cucumber mint side or sauce... or a drink, really. I've been known to do that... The Kizhi Parotta is several Parotta (parott? what is the plural for parotta?) with spicy chicken curry inside the layers. Admittedly a bit niche with my Indian friends, this is a classic of Kerala Cuisine, apparently! The curry leaks into the parotta and make them chewy and flavorful, steamed inside a banana leaf. The food was great, compliments to the chef! Unfortunately service was horrible. It's a scan QR code and order on your phone kind of place, so not expecting much. After we finished eating, the wait staff brought out the coffee and after a few minutes asked us to please finish and leave as there is a line. The coffee was still hot and in metal rather than to-go cups so I told them we would leave after finishing our coffee - keep in mind it's still hot we are not going to burn our tongues for their sake. Finally the manager came and asked us to leave which we refused. After we finished the coffee at our own pace we spoke to the manager to provide advice. It was just a nuisance for us, but they have lost our future business, and we wanted to help them out for the sake of the business and everyone else working there - the policy seems to be the manager's alone. The manager was adamant that they were in the right and no guests should be sitting for so long - hence this review. If business is booming and you end up with lines that is a great thing, expand outdoor covered seating or to a larger location. You are paying less rent for a smaller building, you shouldn't treat your guests like this to increase throughput and revenue - can't have your cake and eat it too. If this is the policy, make it clear when the guests enter - due to limited restaurant size and weekend traffic, we limit sit down to 1 hour. Then the guest can accept this or choose order to-go or dine elsewhere, this is common practice in other restaurants. read more

My wife is from andhra and she has had more authentic Hyderabadi Biryanis and she loved dindugul style. We did to go with the left over biryani and sweeped off. Came here on a Friday evening at around 7:30pm and we were lucky that we could get a table immediately. Everyone after us had to wait a bit. The veg kizhi parotta was terrible. Made with paneer curry, it totally lacked flavor and tasted like cardboard. Couldn't eat parotta and was still hungry, so ordered cauliflower mallu fry and podi idly. Had the absolute pleasure of dining at Sapadu, and I must say--it's an experience like no other! I've tried both their veg and non-veg unlimited meals, and every single time the food has been out of this world. The flavors are authentic, comforting, and take you straight to a traditional Tamil kitchen. Most recently, we celebrated Tamil New Year with their special meal, and it was truly a feast to remember. It tasted very very sour and it tasted like they mixed green mint chutney in it and served. I am taking it home to mix more water some buttermilk and salt to it and then drink it up. Checked out this place last weekend. As other reviews say, this place is located in the middle of office buildings and in a very unexpected part of San Jose for a restaurants. We went when they had just opened for dinner so had not trouble getting seated immediately . The staff is very friendly, service is prompt. The interior is very neat and well decorated. The plates and silverware are all quite unique and shows quality . The food itself is tasty but a bit spicy for my tastebuds . We ordered the Kothu Paratha chicken , Mutton pepper fry and Kizhi Patotta chicken. All items were presented well and the filter coffee and spicy buttermilk were very authentic. We visited with family for lunch and arrived about 40 minutes before closing. I completely understand the staff might be tired, but the extremely rude behavior from the front-of-house person (possibly the manager) ruined the entire experience. He rushed us from the moment we entered, spoke in a condescending and rude tone, and later came to the table and barked, "This is your last chance to order anything more" without even giving us 10 seconds to think. It felt like we were being done a favor rather than being paying customers. Ambience was average at best - the section near the entrance on the left (opposite the restroom) had a strong unpleasant smell the whole time. The food was strictly average - nothing special, nothing memorable. Honestly, the same level of average food is easily available at dozens of other places nearby, but with polite service and a welcoming attitude. When the food is only mediocre and the behavior of the staff is this rude and unwelcoming, it's simply not worth anyone's time, money, or effort to visit here. There are too many better options where you're treated with basic respect. Management, please train your team to treat every customer properly, no matter what time they arrive.
