We've been Patrons of Safe Harbor Seafood Market in Mayport for ages and for good reason - the market which is adjacent to the restaurant is laid out very well! You have a clear view of the Fresh catch and seafood for sale and immediately behind the glass cases of many many seafood products, you can watch the staff in action as they process the fish on huge steel prep tables. I've always been impressed with the cleanliness of Safe Harbor which is particularly amazing since this is a seafood market right. The customer service is consistently good and always love buying fresh Mayport shrimp and squid here. Bonus for the Safe Harbor trip is that lovely Mayport town drive you experience enroute to Safe Harbor. IMO Well worth the trek! read more

To start, we visited on a Saturday around noon, as soon as we walked in, there was an enormous line for the the restaurant wrapping around as well as a separate line to buy fish. The cases were UNREAL, full of super fresh delicious looking fish, scallops, shrimp... foodie paradise! I was super happy that they sell beer by the door, we had just completed a 4 mile hike and we were so thirsty and hot. Enjoying a beer while waiting in line isn't a bad thing at all The menu is pretty awesome, they had so many choices, it hard to make up my mind. Alas, decided to try a little bit of everything. Half a dozen raw oysters which were good, the only thing missing was stronger hot sauce, they had a variety of them, but none of them super spicy. I also had the basket two ways, with blackened scallops and fried fish. The scallops were cooked perfectly, they were super tender and juicy, the fish was nicely breaded and of course, fries. The seafood and the fish here are incredibly good. I don't remember having such a great simple meal at a fish market in many years. I could mumble and insert one thousand words here trying to tell you about that experience, but for brevity's sake, let me just say that this place is really, really good. It is not just that the fish is fresh though. It tastes fresh, yes, it is soft and tender, yes, but above all, it is cooked right and it comes to the table tasting even more delicious. Yes, they also know how to cook fish, yes. After making the line for about fifteen minutes, I ordered a fried trigger-fish and shrimp basket, and a blackened haddock and scallops basket. The fried fish and shrimp were battered right, the batter covering every inch of the fish and the shrimp, and it was cooked the right way, being crunchy on the outside but soft and moist on the inside. The blackened fish and scallops were also coated and fried perfectly, and the seasoning was very good. But I must say that the best bite I had were the scallops. The scallops were big and juicy, and biting into them was like having a shot of sea water, if that was ever possible to do. The scallops were the *bomb*. I also shared an order of shrimp tacos. The shrimp came with a dark sauce and they were cooked pretty good too. The tortillas were good as well, but I wouldn't say this dish is their forte, although it was a good dish, and there were lots of options when it came to hot sauce to cover those tacos. Before this feast, I had a fish soup that was tomato based, and also had potatoes in it. It was really good as well. The way things work around here is that you arrive, make the line to order (15 minutes or more), place your order and pay, then with your order number you go outside to the veranda and sit and wait. Before you know, the runners bring the food out and you chow down. Simple as that. While you wait in line, if you are in a group, you could wander around and look at the fish and the shellfish on display. It all seems very fresh and the market employees are constantly bringing out more stuff. You see people cleaning fish, chopping, moving boxes, etc. The kitchen is somewhere out of view. Two things that I learned from talking to regulars. One, you could call in advance, place your order and pick it up. Who would have thought of that? Instead of making the line for fifteen minutes, you just pay and pick up. Two, and this is the good one, you could buy anything in the market and send it to the kitchen to be cooked, for a nominal fee. This, to me, is just mind blowing. The amount of fish and shellfish available is very large, which makes your possible combinations many. Overall, because of the quality of the fish, the freshness, and the dexterity and experience of the kitchen, Safe Harbor is a must in this neck of the woods. I guess Sun afternoons are when I have my seafood cravings. We came here at 1:45 and the line was practically out the door. Ended up being an hr wait. I ordered the Captain Walter's 3 pc combo again but this time we had everything prepared grilled. I enjoyed my food more this time around bc it wasn't fried food overkill since fries and hush puppies are included in the basket combo. The fries also were better seasoned than last time. The clam chowder was very good with large chunks of clams and the blacken shrimp nachos was delicious as well. While waiting in line, you can see the staff preparing the seafood. For a seafood market, it surprisingly didn't smell fishy. You can have any of the items from the market prepared for you but it's $2/lb extra. Well first thing if you go during the week during lunch get there by 1030 because if you come after that you will wait in line for 20-30 minutes. The food is cooked to order and they have up to six catches of the day on the menu. You can choose the option to sit right on the water and enjoy your meal. They also have a fresh seafood market with great variety Oysters, Fish, Shrimp, etc.... They will give it to you fresh or you can have the option of having it prepared onsite. Coming here while in FL for a visit made me miss living on Florida's First Coast. Mayport was always a magical place to me as a child and as a grown man, nothing changes when I pay a visit. Having Safe Harbor Seafood there makes me smile as well. It also makes me sad in a way when I see all that fresh seafood in the case and the cheap (relative to good seafood in NC) prices. It's a pretty interesting system where you show up, wait in a line that can take 20 minutes or more, order your food, take a number and find a seat and in very short period of time, voila. Delicious seafood brought to your table. I had fried oysters, fried shrimp and blackened fresh Snapper and all of it was outstanding. If you've never had Mayport shrimp then you have never tasted what may be the best tasting shrimp in the world. The service was non existent. We wanted 2 hours for the food and the order was not edible. WTH happened. There was also this women who also waited for a couple of hours for here food and the manager just walked away from her and did not even checked on her and our ordered. I don't like fish but my friends all wanted to come here so I joined them and just like every fish restaurant they have a few chicken items on the menus for people like me. I had the Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich + cheese with Hush Puppies and Fries. Man was it good. It was a large thick fillet that was fried so fresh and perfect coloring and cheese melted into all the crevices perfectly. The Hush Puppies were hot and not to greasy with just the right crunch. The fried shrimp was perfectly breaded, and I know it sounds basic but where we live in the OP/Oakleaf Area there are not many spots for fried shrimp close by. My husband ordered the blackened snapper special and it was delicious. I am inspired to go home and try to make it now. It is a whole fish blackened and fried. The fries were mediocre, they taste just like fried Ore Ida fries with no seasoning. But the hushpuppies make up for it! Next time I think I'll get a kid meal because the shrimp basket was very large. There were a few seats inside that were blocked off due to CDC guidelines, but there was plenty of outdoor seating on the water. The restrooms are singles, but it was kept up decently. read more

I've eaten at SH before and was happy. A loooong time ago I used to pick up truckloads of seafood from them. Two for lunch on a Sunday. Both had 2-item seafood baskets and tea to drink. Line wasn't too long. Food came in a timely manner and was up to par. We sat on the covered porch and it was VERY warm, even with fans. I didn't pay any attention to how much I paid and when I checked Monday, I was completely shocked that it was SIXTY-FIVE DOLLARS for a lunch. Unbelievable. Especially for a basically zero-overhead for service when you have to order at the register, get your own drinks, get you own plasticware, get your own to-go containers. Won't be paying that much ever again anywhere. Oh and the restroom was not cleanly. Soap dispenser was empty too. read more

Safe Harbor is our best seafood market to get fresh grouper and other treasures like oysters. We have dined at the restaurant, though there is always a line regardless of the time we have visited. However, the wait is most often worth it and we typically enjoy our shrimp and fish meals. While there are many options, it is hard to beat fried, they really do those big Mayport shrimp just right in the fryer. Recently we considered calling in a take out order but were not far away so decided to order meals to go in person. Unfortunately, even after lunch rush. they were behind in the kitchen so not taking orders in person to let the kitchen catch up. So we went across the street to purchase our fresh fish on ice and returned to place our to go lunch orders. We both got the fried shrimp baskets. We pulled over on the way home to enjoy our lunch fresh and hot picnic style (did not want to leave our fresh fish waiting too long). The shrimp we enjoyed as always, but the hush puppies were sadly cold and soggy and the fries tasted as though the oil needed to be changed and the tiny cups of coleslaw just okay, so we only ate our shrimp. We were still happy with the dependable shrimp, just wished we had or knew how to order just the seafood since we tossed out the rest of the baskets. Came here on a recommendation from a co-worker! Wow great food and soo fresh!! Many selections of seafood cook how you like it. From grilled, to blackened, to fried. Each comes with choice of fries, vegetables, or hush puppies. They also offer salads as well as selling fish fresh cut raw. They offer soups from bisque to chowders and gumbo. From what I heard from other customers who ordered the bisque and gumbo, they said its one of the best. I had the chowder and was very impressed with the consistency and flavor. They have outdoor seating available. The view of the St John's River was nice and the day was perfect for some seafood. Gotta try this oasis of a gem. Worth the trip. read more

Safe Harbor is the "go to" place for fresh seafood. Its not a fancy restaurant just good eats. You can not go wrong having any shrimp dish on the menu. Closed Monday and pretty crowded on the weekends. Customers order fresh fish to go or order prepared meals to enjoy inside or outdoors along the docks. I've heard of Safe Harbour and their delightful seafood quite a few times before. It's not often I'm in the Mayport area so I didn't want to make a special trip. I played myself. Clearly I was missing out. A coworker and I went after a long day in the area. First, you can smell the deliciousness (mixed with a fish smell) once your close to the door. The fish smell wasn't bad. It was fresh and to be expected. Interestingly enough, we sat outside (in the back) and couldn't really smell the sea. Maybe because we were really hungry. IDK. I've been fishing and crabbing since I was a kid, so again it didn't bother me. There were some annoying flies, but nothing horrendous. I had the shrimp nachos, which were amazing good. They had a nice kick. The shrimp weren't overpowering (probably because they were blackened versus fried) and it was enough to share with my coworker. If I lived closer (or for a really special event) I would purchase my fresh seafood here. Everything looked very clean, organized and again FRESH.
