If you want fresh off the boat seafood, this is the place! There's lots of covered seating outside right on the water where you can eat and watch the seagulls or boats. I always order the kids meal because it's the same exact size as the adult portion but for less money. Order inside, take your number pick a place to sit and they will take it out to your table when it's done. They also have a seafood market inside if you want to take it home and cook it yourself. Wife and daughter out of town. They are allergic to Seafood so I stay away from it with them. Sooo... I was on a Seafood Mission! This is my first time here. A little hard to find. Right on the water amidst the Shrimp Boat Fleet docks. Seating is covered out doors. This place has an adjacent Seafood Market. They are all about the Seafood! You walk in line, place your order, pay and then take a number and find a table outside. Smells like the Dock! People sitting in swim suits and bare feet. It was very pleasant! Absolutely nothing fancy here. I ordered the Savannah Soup $7... and their Special fried Red Snapper Basket $20. I'm not usually a $28 lunch kind of guy! The most expensive thing on their menu posted on the Wall. They immediately brought out the soup in a styrofoam container with plastic utensils. The Soup was nothing memorable. Frankly couldn't tell if it had shrimp or crab in it. It was hot with lots of crackers. There was no condiments on the table. I hate salt and pepper in those little tear apart envelopes! Self serve sodas... but they were out of ice. I was starting to get a bad feeling. How does a Seafood joint run out of ice? Shortly the Snapper Basket arrived! It was fried and so hot I could feel the heat radiating off it. Came with fries... typical frozen bagged kind.. and hush puppies... very tasty and well done. A little sweet with corn. Without question the Star of this show was the Snapper. It was about 15 inches long and fried to perfection! The plastic fork was not up to the job... this required hand action! Best I ever had! Asked for tartar sauce but did not use it because that fish was spiced and cooked so well! It was fresh beyond fresh! I destroyed it... a lot of meat! Parking was easy out front. Restrooms are okay. We usually go to singletons and love it but it was closed. Needing to also get fresh shrimp for Christmas low country boil we decided to try safe harbor seafood. The line was daunting but dont let that deter you, it moves quickly. We are so glad we got in line. Great menu, great good, great service. We got to watch the kitchen in operation for a while because we had to wait for the oil to be changed in one of the friers but this was a great experience so we didnt mind the wait. The cooks and manager (been there 28 years) were a well oiled machine. Don't miss the new seafood market across the street it is super clean with a ton of selections and great prices. read more

I was a little surprised when I walked in and saw that it seems to be much more of a market than a restaurant...at least on the inside. But, it really didn't matter once I got my food! -Shrimp dip: creamier and tastier than expected, didn't eat much of it though knowing how much more food was coming -Blackened Scallops: absolutely fantastic, I almost didn't want the rest of my food once I tried them -Fried Haddock: cooked perfectly with a tasty dipping sauce, the fish could have been seasoned a bit more, but overall very good -Shrimp Nachos: these were missing something, but I just couldn't put my finger on it. The shrimp was super tasty, I don't know maybe because there was no cheese but cheese and shrimp don't go together so maybe shrimp on nachos just isn't for me -Grilled Shrimp Tacos: my friend ate them in a matter of minutes, so I'm assuming they were good -Raw and Fried Oysters: they were a hit at the table! They only serve beer and wine but do have some craft beers and you cant get beers by the bucket which is the better way to go because you likely will be sitting outside in the heat. Safe Harbor is the one restaurant that I have to visit every time I'm in Jacksonville! It does get pretty crowded during the dinner rush, so if you have a big group it's easier to come early or late to ensure you can find seats. No worries I was walking around this place today like a lost kids at the mall and I think I figure out how to get the restaurant to prep the fish you buy at the store on the other end of this place. So here is the scoop; I walked in today and wanted to get a deep fried whole snapper which is not on the menu. First I went to the store section and picked up a nice 2# snapper and got it gutted and prepped . I paid for it at the store cashier and took it to the restaurant cashier. Asked them to deep fry the fish ($2/lb charge) and order hush puppies, fries and tomato cucumber salad. All very delicious. Don't judge me, all of this stuff looks so good I couldn't help myself. I paid for everything up front, got a number on a stick and found a table outside. The food came out fast and a pleasant person with a smile on his face delivered my mouth watering dinner. I came here on a Thursday night, party of 3. How this place works: you walk in, form a line and order at the counter & when you find a seat (the night I was there was super busy so it was hard to find a table but they've got a downstairs as well) they'll bring your food to you. We shared two dozens of oysters, smoked fish dip, conch fritters, Blackened Basa, a couple sides and a very small bottle of wine = about $110.00 The oysters were great, fresh and sea salty. Fish dip was good; I love spicy food so I loved it with some added hot sauce. The conch fritters were different to me. I'd never had conch before so it was just something completely new. It was crunchy and chewy, almost flavorless so I'd probably try conch again, just not as a fritter. The Basa, I was hoping that this would be the star, but it was underwhelming for my taste. The blackened seasoning wasn't great - it kind of just tasted like paprika and salt and pepper; the fish was served falling apart and at that rate I'd have preferred it have been the fish dip, really. You pay what you'd expect for fresh seafood but the flavors here could be better for me to want to come back. read more

They do have outside seating that is spaced so you can come and eat outside during the covid recovery. Line is long to place your order. Hmmmm what happen to the service? This place use have good service....even with the long lines...service was still good. Not sure what happened tonight. A bunch of kids behind the counter laughing and socializing....definitely not working. When the line stopped moving I asked what was the hold up. One of the kids replied oh we stopped taking orders so the kitchen can catch up. Ok so they decided to slow the customers down so the kitchen can catch up. AMAZINGGGGG! Well, the food and the view that is. Service and the level of organization could be a bit better, however I will definitely visit this establishment again and I have recommended several others as well. I was incredibly hungry after not eating all day, so I was bit disappointed to see a line out of the door, however the food was worth the wait. Also, the restaurant was practicing social distancing so that explained why the line was out of the door. Now, on to the food....SO GOOD! I ordered conch fritters for an appetizer, a 3-way fried platter that included: fish of the day ( triggerfish), fried shrimp, and fried clam strips. As a person who has Bahamian roots, my standards for conch fritters are quite high and almost impossible to reach lol. However, this restaurant did a good job--they weren't the highlight of my evening, but I definitely enjoyed them. Now, on to my meal! The trigger fish was actually a really good tasting fish that was seasoned very well, the shrimp was fried and seasoned well, and oh my gosh the clam strips were seasoned so well and very tender! I wasn't a fan of their tartar sauce, which is unfortunate because I love tartar sauce! Also, as a true southerner I was compelled to have a sweat tea on the side ( because it's only right), it was a bit underwhelming so I replaced with a coke and was good to go . The view out on the patio was just amazing as the sun set so beautifully on the water. Everything was fresh and seasoned so well! Can't wait to make a trip back! read more

This review is for the market only. We didn't eat at the restaurant - the line was unbelievably long and it was only 2:30PM. I mean, 30-40 people in line. I'd hate to line up like this during the regular lunch or dinner hours. We picked up some amberjack, tilapia and shrimp to cook at home. The tilapia looked like it had been previously frozen but that was ok with me since I usually buy them that way anyway. Amberjack looked and smelled fresh. I marinated it and grilled it and it was delicious. The shrimp was smaller than I expected for "large" shrimp but they tasted fresh too. By the way, if you ask any of the employees if any of the fish was previously frozen, their stock answer is always "no". Frankly, I don't believe that everything in the market is fresh and just off the boat. Some of it looked previously frozen (such as the tilapia). There's really nothing wrong with selling previously frozen fish so they should just admit it. Some of it is better that way anyway. There's such a variety of seafood here that I'd probably stop here daily to pick up seafood to eat at home. You can catch a glimpse of some of the employees cutting up your seafood in the back. Prices were reasonable. Parking can be a pain. read more

I've been to to Safe Harbor many times and endured their poor service several times without feeling compelled to actually write review because the food is good (not great) but today was the last time I come in for a visit. First I called to try to take a to go order no answer (I figured they might be busy) which is fine because I figured I'd just walk in and place an order. Boy was I wrong after waiting in line for folks in front of me to order however when I got to the front of the line the cashier tells me "I can't take your order now we are too busy and we have to wait until the kitchen clears more orders" then walk away leaving me just standing there. I flag down another employee and she just says they are busy and are on break another person behind asks another employee what's going on he gets some non sense explanation that the kitchen won't take more tickets when they get behind and it could take 20-45 mins to get our orders. This is absolutely insanity the server could simply take the order and say we are backed up so your food won't be ready for another hour but to simply leave the post for an unspecified amount of time with customers waiting is not only unprofessional but it's not a logical thing to do when a kitchen is busy. Needless to say I left and went to a better managed spot Dockside Seafood. The food here is good but it's not good enough to over come horrible service and extremely long wait times. Don't come here if you're looking for a good time they make you work for it and ultimately it's not worth the hassle. I'd give it half a star if I could. read more

Very busy place around 1:30pm on a Thursday, but the service was quick. You line up to order and pay and then have a seat. Your food is brought out to you. I had fried clam strips and shrimp. (I wish I had gotten grilled shrimp.) The fried shrimp and clam strips had a thick hard, dark brown breading that might have been the result of overused oil. However, a little seasoning or salt would have helped the flavor of the shrimp and clam strips come through. The hush puppy was also hard and dark brown, but the inside was tasty if you like a sweet hush puppy. The cole slaw was on the sweet side too, but not too bad. My husband had a fabulous grouper sandwich. Very flavorful, huge piece of fish that was golden, not brown. One son had the alligator tail appetizer and fried okra side. Both golden and delicious. My younger son's grilled cheese sandwich looked yummy. Golden and well grilled. Warning: if you have a picky eater who must have orange cheese, be aware. My son's grilled cheese had white cheese. We live very close by and eat it often. Today was the first day I was disappointed Last week I had the most amazing grilled shrimp basket. I typically order the bam shrimp taco feast (they're fried) but decided to do grilled shrimp with the taco feast today since the ones I had last time were so awesome. My husband picked up the order and he gets home and there's a handful of these tiny baby shrimp in there with some kind of crusty coating. There was also a tiny scallop mixed in there. I was so bummed. I mean, I ate it. It wasn't very good but I was hungry. Next time I'm going to have to call and ask if there's supposed to be a difference in the grilled shrimp in the basket and the grilled shrimp in the tacos... and those weren't really even grilled it seems? This is definitely a place that seafood lovers do not want to miss. Let me say that if it's your first time here, the whole process of ordering can be a bit tricky depending on what you want. There are 2 ways to order your food: one is from the pre-set menu they have and the other is to buy the raw seafood from the counter and have the kitchen cook them for you based on your personal preferences (fried, grilled, lightly blackened, etc) for a fee of $2/lb . Once you walk in the market/restaurant, there is a line you have to enter in order to order your food. If you pick to buy the raw seafood for them to cook, you enter the seafood market line first, buy what you want, then you come back to the restaurant line to make your order. A bit of an ordeal, I know, but it is worth it. I've ordered my food both ways and have been happy with everything I've gotten. I had them do a lightly fried American red snapper and royal red shrimps for me and I've also gotten their basket 3 ways with scallops (lightly blackened), fried oysters, and fresh catch. Everything was fresh, perfectly cooked, and seasoned nicely. Customer service is also great, in my experience. The only downside that I have to say about this place is the long wait in line. They need to find a better and more efficient system for people to order food because, as of right now, you can only from one register. Not a very good system for a booming business. read more

This place is very impressive and has two businesses in one place. First is a take away seafood market, that had one of the best displays of fresh seafood I have seen. Second is a restaurant with a full menu, plus you can hand select your fish and have it prepared. I chose a flounder, and had it fried and scored, coupled with a Caesar salad.
