It's been years ago when I stopped by their other location for their lunch buffet and became . Our recent visit here is after a greenbelt hike, so our stomachs are excited for some food. Staff is super nice. We ordered an assortment of dishes, including naan, saag paneer, goat curry, and the lamb rogan josh. The naan was excellent and the bone-in goat curry was delicious and super tender. The surprise of the meal for me was actually the saag. The saag was really flavorful and you can taste the spinach. Probably one of the best saag I've had, and I've been thinking about it for days after the meal. The menu is large and chances are that whatever you order will probably be delicious. Overall, prices are a bit higher than at other Indian restaurants, but the quality is excellent. read more

All were tasty with nice portions. To me Indian menus are very much alike. Similar to Chinese. The problem is most Indian food is expensive. Much more than Chinese. The curry I had here was everything I want in one - warm, comforting, spicy & flavorful. I appreciated that they were very accommodating for food restrictions, clearly marking different items with both gluten and vegan options. Even with avoiding dairy and gluten, I had a good handful of dishes to choose from. I went with the goat curry, and it was exceptional and full of flavor. I went to Saffron South for the first time and I was definitely impressed from beginning to end. The food here is so authentic and everything is made in house and so fresh. My server Bidesha was amazing, she gave me several recommendations and had well knowledge of the menu, she was very tentative and made sure my drinks were always refilled and provided a great experience for my first time. I ordered the Samosas which came with a refreshing mint chutney and a sweet tamarind sauce, the Lamb Kabobs were also top tier. For entrees I highly recommend the Lamb Rogan Josh with garlic naan, there was so much flavor in every bite. Chicken lazeez was delicious and unlike anything I've ever had before. I will dream of this until I get it again. Note - I got 150 dollars of food to go for my husbands birthday. I had a pretty basic order - a chicken tikka masala (medium heat) + samosas and the samosas were alright. But this is probably the most bland Indian food I've ever tasted. I'm not sure if the chicken was even seasoned but I am sure that it was overcooked. This was ordered via delivery so to be fair - there COULD have been a miscommunication through the app but I won't be ordering or visiting from here again. Updating my review. I visited saffron in person for pick up, and the butter chicken was delicious. It is everything it's supposed to be: Quality chicken, tender, juicy, flavorful. I loved it! Still not the best in Austin IMO, but a great great dish. Also, looks like the buffet is discontinued. Place was clean. The best Indian food in Austin! Best I've ever had actually. Great service and amazing vegetarian options. The Mushroom Coconut Curry is like smooth creamy heaven and vegetable pakoras are crispy and flavorful. We haven't had one bad dish. The owner treated us to a rose and saffron panna cotta that was to die for. They also have a good setup for larger parties. Saffron is a decent option for Indian food is you're in the area or ordering in - their style is more similar to Tarka or Clay Pit. If they revive their lunch buffet, it would certainly become a go-to. Portions weren't XL but not small either - each entree was sufficient for one person. The Bombay Brussels sprouts in mustard sauce were incredible. The spice doesn't play around, and a 5/10 spice level is a low-medium. Food is filling and not a bad deal. Saffron serves up some of the best Indian food you'll find in Austin. The menu is plentiful and the food has tons of flavor. We never finish a meal feeling disappointed, and we always finish a meal feeling satiated. Special shout out to the lamb saag - one of my favorite dishes in Indian cuisines, and one of the best presentations of this dish comes from Saffron's chefs. I also love their rice pudding. Ordered Saffron (via Favor) for dinner tonight and it was OUT-STANDING. We liked it waaaayyyy more than the last time we ordered Indian from another popular Austin establishment- way more flavor. We ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala (big chunks of chicken and depth in flavor and spice, really really good), the Safron Chicken Lazeez was our FAV- spinach and minced chicken, really good and filling, and the Lamb Rogan Josh- good rich flavor (like a stew almost) but a little oily on top. The Gobi cauliflower was also something to remember and order again! We like it better than Alamo's buffalo cauliflower- weird comparison but try it and you'll see! Everyone was so friendly at this restaurant that I wanted to like it more than I did. The staff really goes out of their way to make you feel welcomed. The restaurant was full and we did not feel overlooked at any point. We ordered drinks and two appetizers (Samosas and Scallops). The food was presented beautifully but not very flavorful. The samosas had very little seasoning. The scallops where small for an appetizer and drowned by the amount of sauce. We opted to skip ordering entrees as we were disappointed with the appetizers. Their online ordering site is not very descriptive, and I bought a side of rice because I didn't see it listed with the dish. Ended up with five containers of rice and told them that was too much and I didn't want that much, they should keep some of it. To which their response was that because I paid for it I had to have it. Missed opportunity for better customer service there. Would not recommend the grilled vegetable and paneer - smaller quantity and overly spiced. The curries are pretty standard fare, but it's the quantity/quality of specialty naan that makes it their best offering in my opinion. We have been sampling various restaurant offerings since moving to Austin. Saffron is the #1 Indian restaurant on our list. The food is delicious, just the right level of spicy at Medium. Our favorite item is Lamb chops Maseladar, cooked perfectly every time, just the right level of pink. Samosas are super too as is naan. The food here has always been good; that's probably why I visited twice in a month. The ambiance is good too. For the food and ambiance I'd want to give 5-stars. But... The thing that has begun to bother me at a personal level is something that's now happened twice in a row; first when I visited about a month ago and again today when I revisited with my younger son for dinner. We go in there, see several tables unoccupied so we ask politely and request if we may sit by the window. Admittedly those are tables for 4 - but the restaurant has several tables open. The guy there - on both occasions - tells us since it's just the two of us, he cannot seat us at a table for four. Funny thing is - on both occasions - pretty much within 2-3 minutes after us - come two other patrons and they make the same request to be seated at those tables. They automatically get seated on the table we literally just requested and were denied. When I point this out to the guy today, he proceeds to tell me they probably got seated there because there were no other tables available. When I point out 3 vacant tables literally right near us - he acknowledges that but wonders why I'm complaining !?? Maybe I don't get it but it just doesn't feel right. The food is truly good and I want the chef to know that but the 1-star is for the service and for that feeling in the pit of my stomach that I was not treated right - twice. read more

For my wedding caterer, I went to all the Indian restaurants in Austin and Saffron was a clear winner! The food is fusion and all the spices, ingredients and dishes are amazing! As a caterer, Tashi went over and beyond on my wedding day to make sure all the food was served hot and fresh! He even surprised us with a few extra desserts as a gift, we are so thankful for his kindness! Our family has planned visits to Austin just to enjoy a dinner at Saffron together!
