WOW, bring a pillow and blanket cause you're in for a wait. The poor attitude at the strip mall Italian restaurant down the road led us to Sage. But in hindsight, we should've threw in the towel on Italian for the night. Located on the corner, Sage has a wonky triangle layout. We were greeted immediately and sat quickly but that was perhaps the only positive of the night. We had close to 10 minutes with the menus before being approached by the server. Our server came frazzled and first words were "What do you want to order?". Um, how about some drinks first? We ended up ordering both at the same time, but ended up waiting 1 hour and 15 mins to get our entrees. During the span of that hour, neither our server nor the other 3 that were standing around mingling with other tables bothered to approach the chef or our table to provide an explanation. The complimentary loaf of bread was inedible, hard as a rock and left intact by almost every table. The pasta itself was good -- the Angel Prawn and Clam Linguine were well portioned and came with a good serving of seafood. The linguine was far too al dente. My dish, the Wife's Favorite, was the least liked of the night. The grilled chicken "breast" was more of a cutlet, much too thin and dried out. Having flown in early the same morning from the east coast, the last thing we wanted was a 2.5 hour meal that lasted close to what would've been midnight in Boston. Though palatable, the mediocre atmosphere, long wait, and price point doesn't put Sage on the list for a return. read more

As my sister was in town from California, we decided to try somewhere new. I remember hearing about Sages when it first opened, but it fell off our radar screen of new restaurants to try. I searched YELP, looking for something new, saw Sages listed as #4 in Redmond and remembered that we always wanted to visit this restaurant. The food is great, the service pretty good. The menu items we chose were: Mediterranean pasta; chicken stuffed with spinach and a marsala sauce and clams linguine. All of us loved our entrees. The Mediterranean pasta is served over penne with artichokes, sun-dried tomatoes,olives? and other ingredients I am currently not remembering. The sauce was very good and somewhat similar to a puttanesca but "not a Puttanesca as it doesn't have anchovies" said our waiter. Which lead us to a new respect for our waiter who obviously is well-versed in the variations of Mediterranean/Italian cooking. The clam linguine was perfect with the typical garlic, white wine, parsley sauce. Nothing unusual...however, it did not disappoint. Many clams and well-cooked pasta. However, as is so typical of many restaurants, they don't clean the clams and you end up crunching on the sand left in the shells. Not good. It is so easy to soak the clams to clean out the sand. But perhaps the chef feels this removes the salty, saline taste of the sea from the mollusks. The chicken Bart or Sages??? (can't remember the exact name but was similar to a chicken marsala only it was stuffed and served roulade) was served with green beans and carrots which were perfectly cooked. Salads were good. The caeser dressing was slightly disappointing but still okay. I am not a fan of creamy caeser. When did it become the norm to serve caeser dressings creamy? Thank you 1980's. We liked everything but the decor. We couldn't put our finger on it, but there was something about the decor that missed and this one fact would keep us from returning again and again. The lighting was low, but the fixtures in the ceiling were Lowe's style, $35 kitchen ceiling fixtures. There was nice furniture in places (we were sitting next to an antique buffet style table), but it felt like you were in a restaurant in a strip mall. The walls were a contemporary gold/warm color, but the black ceiling gave it an odd look (my mom said it looked like "the old supper clubs"). The windows look out on the sidewalks, but is not a view you want to look at as the street lights are glaring and the street view is not quaint. It would almost be more interesting to have the outside view blocked off with some window treatment like Mediterranean grill work, curtains, shutters, etc. And I usually like a view. The food is definitely worth the visit though. read more

We moved right above Sages in Oct 2015 and were very excited to try this restaurant. It is intimate and has a great ambiance and the food was both plentiful and delicious. The reason I gave it 2 stars was the service. Our waiter did not introduce himself or welcome us, barely said 5 words while there, once we were served he did not come over to inquire if everything was to our satisfaction and were not thanked for coming in or at the very least acknowledged in any way upon leaving. I felt as though we were in an episode of twilight zone. It doesn't matter how incredible the food is if the experience while there fails miserably. This could have been our favorite Italian restaurant if not for the poor service we received. Very disappointed! read more

We went on mother's day not even thinking about the date...they were busy but had room for us. They had a special menu offering only a few choices of their regular menu, including choice of soup or salad, main entree and dessert. The staff is extremely pleasant, checking frequently without being a nuisance. The food was above and beyond my expectations. The house salad is something that I continue to try to replicate. Spring greens with craisins, candied walnuts, shredded parmesan cheese and an amazing balsamic vinaigrette. I could have simply eaten salad and been happy to do so. I ordered the Lobster ravioli's.....YUMMY! Lots of flavor, cooked perfectly and the sauce was spectacular! My boyfriend had the Cioppino which after trying his entree I kind of wish I had ordered it. The broth was super tasty and the seafood flavorful and cooked just right. I will go back again! read more

Entree and service were great. I think they could have improved on some of the details, especially for the cost of the meal. I was surprised by the salt and pepper shakers on the table, and powdered parmesan also in a shaker. This is the sort of thing that I expect at the olive garden, not a boutique european cafe. The dipping balsamic for the bread was also low quality. The complimentary bread was cold, and the cut end was dried and crusty. Seemed as though it had been sitting out since the lunch shift. If the bread had been good I would have given them 4 stars; if they had fresh ground pepper and fresh shaved parmesan I would have given them 5 stars. For the price I would instead recommend ristorante paradiso in Kirkland. If you go to Sage's anyways, the walnut cake for the dessert is a must. I may go back just for dessert and coffee sometime! read more

I would like to give a review but they were closed at 7 pm today, the 23 rd. The sign on the door said that they were close from August something to August 24. We will not be able to review Chef Bart's cuisine because Chef Bart was out of town (8-28) when we arrived at his restaurant. I had called earlier in the day but no one picked up. I thought they must be busy . They have a small staff....According to the website they were open for dinner. When the 5 of us arrived at 6:30 we found a sign on the door telling us they were on vacation until the 31 of August. Wouldn't it have been excellent customer service if he had at the very least, added a voice message to their business phone warning all of us that we could not eat there ????????? read more

My husband and I love this place. We are regulars and sorry to hear the last few reviewers gave a bad rap. We love the food here, its always fresh and hot. Everything tastes homemade and we love that it isn't chain food. We stay away from Friday and Saturday nights because it is usually really busy and they don't take reservations under 6 people, but if you like to eat out with your significant other and have a nice dinner, we highly recommend this little place. The staff are very friendly and the chef is always very personable. If you like good homemade food, this is a great choice. read more

Sages has the best Italian food I have had in Washington. This is one of my two favorite restaurants on the Eastside. Chef Bart's food is delicious, his menu creative and quality consistent. The menu is a good size with lots of options and often a daily special. I stop by with my boyfriend at least once a month and have continued to be impressed by the exceptional service we receive from his waitstaff. It's the kind of service you expect from a place with prices double what we pay here. Went again last night as a special treat after a hard work week.The wine list and recommendations as in the past were spot on. My usual has become the Sages homemade gnocchi with basil and Italian sausage in a rose sauce. My boyfriend orders Bart's signature chicken which is stuffed with spinach and goat cheese, topped with sweet marsala mushroom sauce. We have enjoyed the clam chowder, Sages salad and caesar salad as well. So glad there is such a wonderful restaurant in Redmond. read more

We were a group of 6 and all of our meals were fantastic. One of us can't eat dairy but wanted the filet mignon, which had a dairy based sauce. The chef prepared him a non dairy sauce for it and it was very impressive. Everything was delicious and beautifully served. We visit Redmond a few times per year and will return to Sages every time we come now. read more

My boyfriend and I went here before Kurios, we got there at about 6pm and we're told we would be seated in a minute, after about 15 minutes we are seated and we order within 5 minutes of sitting down.. 40 minutes later and our food is still not here. Our waitress is ignoring us because she is too busy talking to friends, so we flag down the hostess to ask how much longer (at this point we need to think about getting out of there to make it to cirque with time to look around)... the hostess, who was very nice, gets our waitress to come to our table. We ask how much longer until our food is ready and she tells us about 20 more minutes (seriously?! An hour to get food?!) And we tell her that won't work because we need to get going to cirque. And she (in a very accusatory tone) says "well you should have told me you were going to cirque Du soleil and it doesn't start until 8 so you have plenty of time" ... I'm sorry, 1.) since when do we need to tell the waitress all our plans for the evening to get food in a timely manner?? And 2.) No we don't have time, because leaving the restaurant at 7 (without food) barely gave us enough time to get the pictures done and hit the concessions stand before the show started, neither of which had big lines. I would have tried to go back another time when we didn't have anything else planned, but the waitress was so off putting that I will not bother to go back. read more

This was my second time there. Food was good (a little too buttery to be great), however the service was awful. The place was barely half full and I mentioned to the1 lone waiter that he must have been short staffed tonight since we had been waiting so long for him to take our order. He promptly replied 'no - just a regular night'! On our second bottle of wine (was a group of 5 of us), he wanted to use the same glasses for a completely different wine (pinot vs cab), and some were not even finished their first glass! Went the other night with the family. Food was just okay. The clam chowder tasted like a well seasoned gravy but not like clam chowder, the caesar salad was okay but there was no bite of anchovy and the Bart's chicken was just okay also. The service was lacking and the place wasn't even busy, I felt like the bus boy refilling water was the only real service we had. Being from the Bay Area, I tend to be a little arrogant when it comes to reviewing restaurants in the Seattle Area. Last night, my arrogance came falling down when five of us dined at Sages. This place has all of the right ingredients, ambiance, service and food. Everything was sparking clean with a warm, inviting and charming atmosphere (burning fireplace and white cotton tablecloths). Our waiter, Slavy (?) was the quentessential waiter. He was charming and classy, without being too charming, knew his wines and knew the menu. He was a 10! The busser kept the waters filled, table cleared of plates and was unassuming. Last but not least, the food was superb. We ordered grilled prawns and caprese as apptizers. Both were presented beautifully and tasted even better. All of the entrees were delicious. I ordered linguini with fresh clams and asked if the pasta could be cooked al dente. The chef accommodated me and it was perfect. We ordered a sampler dessert plate that was a perfect end to the meal. I forgot to mention that being that it was late in the evening, I enjoyed a delicious cup of freshly brewed decaf coffee and Slavy gave us all an after-dinner chocolate to top off a perfect evening. It doesn't get any better. We are now new regulars to Sages. Keep up the good work. read more

My husband and I came her for a date night. On the outside it is very unassuming. You park on the street, and it is located a bit out of the way in Redmond behind the QFC and Staples under some apartments (condos?). Once you walk through the door you will see everything there is to see. It is a relatively small dining room, but we had no issue getting a seat on a Friday night. They do not take reservations unless your group is 6 or more, or it is a holiday. We noticed only one group who had to wait-but I think they were seated in less than 10 minutes. We both decided to have a glass of wine. We both had Sages cabernet for $7 a glass. The pour was very generous-much more generous than other places. We ordered starters, my husband had a cup of the clam chowder and I had the caesar salad. The clam chowder was not as thick or white as many others but still very good. The caesar salad came with freshly shaved parmesan-yum! The dressing on it was not too heavy either. For the main meal we both had the filet mignon which came with asparagus, carrots, and mashed potatoes. I asked for my steak to be medium, and my husband wanted medium rare. Both of our steaks were medium well-with no pink in the steak. The steaks were still very easy to cut and chew, but I think they would have been a bit juicier if they had been cooked to medium rare to medium. On top of the steak was a port and peppercorn sauce. It was a tad sweet, but just enough to give it flavor and not have the need for steak sauce. The vegetables they came with were very crisp. The mashed potatoes were very good, but I wish they gave you a bigger helping! For dessert we had the tiramisu and coffee. The coffee seemed like your average coffee. The tiramisu was very good-not has heavy as some that we've had, but this was nice after eating dinner and starters. Overall for 2 glasses of wine, soup, salad, 2 steaks, 2 coffees, and dessert our dinner came to about $115. Our steaks were $33, but the pastas ranged from $15-$17. We both want to go back and try the pastas, as the sauce for those smelled incredibly good when the waiters were bringing them out. The wait staff was very attentive, checking on how the food was, clearing plates when we were done, and refilling our water. A couple things to note are: your meal comes with a bread basket (ours had 4 pieces in it). The bread was good, but if you want more you're going to pay $2 for another basket. The wait for your food is pretty slow. We got there around 6:20 and didn't leave for about 2 hours. On the menu it warns you the chef makes all of the food so have some patience. Nothing a good dinner companion(s) won't solve! They don't split checks because I don't believe they use a computer for your bill (we saw a calculator on the desk that it looked like they were figuring the bills out with). They do accept credit card though. The dress here seemed pretty casual, but the place was definitely a good place to go on a date or have a nice night out with friends. read more

I don't know how to begin so I'll just go right into it. The place is nice, the waiter was awesome. Food came out in good time, and the wine was very very good. (house red cab) So we ordered the shrimp tower, greek salad, and my wife and I got the Salmon Picatta. Ok, so the shrimp was firm, and not very tasty. The sauce was good. The salad was a bit overpriced for such a small plate with red onions, cucumbers, and tomato. The olive oil was amazing. So now the Salmon. For the price of the Salmon, the piece was small, and all you got for veggies was 3 halved carrots, that didn't even equal a full carrot, and maybe 3 heads of broccoli. That's it. I left very still hungry, and spent, with tip, $130. Not very good. Sorry but if I pay that much for food, I want to be overwhelmed and leave full. I was HUNGRY. I was going to stop at Chipotle's for a veggie bowl!! (and I'm a skinny guy) Very unsatisfied!!! read more

I was really looking forward to what promised to be a great menu - my mother is Italian and a great cook. I rarely like the kind of Italian restaurants that serve just tomato sauce slopped on noodles. The food was about on par with many restaurants in this price scale - tho it did not blow my mind and about as good as I can make at home. The service on the other hand was about as rude as it gets - the server did not even return to ask how are meal was or if we wanted more drinks (I had to ask the another staff person to have our server return so I could enjoy some wine with my meal at a time that was not so busy). When I inquired about the origin of the name of the place, our server condescended that sage is an herb like parsley - no shit?! I was wondering its relationship to this particular Italian fare - and our meal was actually garnished w- basil which is pretty standard and neither dish had sage in it that I could taste. Even my 18-year-old son (who I was enjoying a last meal with before he started his first year college) commented on the rude service. Make sure your meal runs well over $100 for 2 people or you will be made to feel like it's not worth coming back again. read more
