Saggio - Washington Heights Such a walkable neighborhood that is Washington Heights. There are so many diverse bars and restaurants to choose from. And with so many options it easily allows for bar hopping. During this Summer of 2025, our large group concluded our mid-afternoon adventures at Saggio, a Southern Italian restaurant. The service received was prompt. The drinks were good. And as far as food, I heard some of the desserts ordered hit the spot. On the other hand, my simplistic food choice wasn't on par with everyone else. I wasn't in the mood for dessert, pasta or a salad, as nothing initially appealed to me. In the end, I chose a pairing of French Fries and Chicken Liver Pâté on Crostini. The simple yet odd combo would've worked but the french fries were under done and cold. And the chicken liver pâté looked inedible, as most pâtés sometimes do. Granted it tasted fair and from what I recall the pâté may have had a hint of Anise mixed in or something similar. Despite my disappointing food choice, we all had a great time concluding our afternoon bar hopping. If we end up stopping at Saggio again, I'll be certain to try something else. 3.5 read more

I've gone to this place a few times. Today I was excited to go back its always been good. Well those days have passed. We were seated on such a small table that we didn't know where to put the dishes. The staff was not friendly at all. I have always gone for the salmon and white bean crostoni. I had both today and they were both a disappointment. The salmon was watery and undercooked. The white bean crostoni was super spicy and the bread too hard to eat. The waitress seemed disinterested and bored. The drinks were ok to say the least. This place was good but has gone to shit. I will not be returning. read more

Saggio is a decent spot in the neighborhood. The restaurant is not big and some of the tables towards the back feel cramped. I recommend sitting at the bar or in a booth. They have a backyard but there was a private wedding party happening when we were there. They only do happy hour through Thursday and not the weekends which was a bummer. I love their spaghetti limone and I order it each time. I love the complimentary bread they serve with olive oil. They had some interesting specials though I did not take advantage of them. I had a glass of wine though the cocktail look nice. Service is friendly and attentive. Sound level is good. I did not use the bathroom but I believe it's located by the bar. One of the few Italian places in the area so I am glad they're around. read more

Food is very good. Service is reasonable. Decor is warm. All ruined by the tables being crowded too close together inside. It is not cheap, and I don't mind paying for quality, but not to have it ruined by dining in cramped third class steerage. I will not be dining there again, and let them know on the way out. read more

An absolute delight. We were in the neighborhood for a house concert, and since my wife and I have been to Sicily and loved it, there was no question. We shared a delightful kale Caesar salad with a light yet peppery and flavorful dressing and tasty croutons (light-years away from the formulaic chinks of romaine most places offer) with great cheese pieces. My wife had the gluten-free penne with pesto (including potato and green beans!) and I had the skirt steak -- perfectly done, not grainy, and with another delicious salad (arugula) and more cheese. And a side order of perfectly cooked tender-crisp broccoli. We didn't have room for dessert but every thing on our plates was both earthy and delicate, full of flavor and color. A special Hooray for our waitperson RAQUEL who was thoughtful, genuinely friendly, and efficient. We want to return! As an afterthought: there's a blackboard in the main dining room that reads LOVE - LOYALTY - COMMUNITY. Lest you think that is mere advertising, Saggio engenders such a friendly warm atmosphere that when someone at another table celebrated a birthday and their friends began to sing, the whole restaurant joined in and applauded. Came ~5pm on Sunday. We made a reservation beforehand for a party of 2 and got seated immediately at a rectangular table wedged next to the staircase. The spot is so cramped that the two seats were 90 degree next to each other and the closest table is ~6inch away (not exaggerating this distance because neither we nor the other party seated at that table could squeeze through that space; we all had to get to our seats through the other side so minus a star). The restaurant is half full, but the staff won't let us change a table (they said the other tables are reserved for a large party but those tables remained empty the whole time we were there and the restaurant remained half full, hence removing another star). Food was delicious for WaHi. We got several dishes: - pumpkin soup (supposedly a daily special): savory and mildly sweet. Highly recommend - burrata: very fresh - spaghetti al limone: very lemony. My partner likes it, but am not a big fan of lemon in general so not my fav - tagliatelle al funghi: absolutely delicious if you are a fan of mushrooms! Hi, I just moved into the neigborhood and love this place. The only Italian (um, maybe Sicilian) restaurant for blocks around. FIrst, the food. Incredible al dente pasta with various sauces. Haven't tried the Seafood or Steak which seem at reasonable prices but over my budget. Happy hour from 4-6 is a great value as is Sunday brunch. Sadly, they have stopped Saturday brunch. For me, a plus is no TVs. If you want to watch sports, go down 2 doors to Le Chiele which is decent and has every game on TV. The food there is not as good. A special shout out to servers Samantha and Stephanie! I don't think I can deduct a half point but I would for only one reason - I love the fresh bread with spicy olive oil, but the food usually arrives within 10 minutes so I don't get a chance to chill before the food arrives. I'm a solo diner so that's what it's like for me. It's a small place so if you have a party of 10 or more maybe go to Carmine's instead. It is South Italian cusine - not NJ Italian cuisne. neighborhood restaurant thats not kind to their neighbors. The food is impeccable especially for the area this place is a gem. I called on a Monday night to come in at 9:15pm and was told I'd be cutting it close because the kitchen closes at 9:30 when I asked but don't you guys close at 10? I got no direct response. I got there promptly and felt very unwelcomed met with no greeting by the hostess. I made a joke about getting in and out of there. I told the waitress I wanted dessert at the beginning of ordering our meal she was kind and informative at first but once she took our order she didn't check up on us again but showed up at the end with the check. When I asked what about the dessert that I spoke about having with her in the beginning she said "yeah not a chance" disappointing everytime I go here the food is so good but it seems as if the staff just wants to go home which is fine just don't make your guest feel it. I'll come in much earlier next time see if ill be treated with decency . read more

Moved into the neighborhood just under a year ago and Saggio's was the first place we ate out at. A year ago, we were blown away by the food cooked and seasoned to perfection and the gorgeous ambiance on the patio in the back. Since, Saggio's has not been the same. Tonight, the linguine was gummy and overcooked and the sauce was overly sweet. This has been a theme when eating at Saggio's recently, in that the quality of the food being served continuously declines. Unfortunate. read more

Saggio, I have zero complaints about this amazing Italian gem, I came here to celebrate a milestone with family and everyone was delighted with their picks from the steak, to pastas and deserts. Everything was timely, the atmosphere was romantic, I only suggest that its a pretty small establishment so large parties will probably feel cramped, 1-4 people is the sweet spot! I personally had the Fettuccine Alfredo, a glass of Cabernet, and a small desert and it was all delicious Highly recommend, will be coming back in the future! read more

I was introduced to this place by a friend. After several hours of community service I was in need of a good meal and I wanted brunch. This place is warm, cozy and the food is great. The pancakes are among the best that I ever had. My friend's potatoes were yummy as well. I think the mimosas were free for an hour. It was more than enough time to have more than enough mimosas. I'm a little surprised by some of the reviews here - we came here for a friends birthday and absolutely loved it. I'm a big fan of Italian food and often struggle finding good Italian restaurants that rivals my family's home cooking and I would 100% eat at Saggio again. The restaurant is small, so a reservation at prime mealtimes is recommended. Everyone was super friendly and had great recommendations. They have a seasonal rotating cocktail menu that we ordered from and some delicious food specials. We tried the eggplant rollatini appetizer which was great and I was even more surprised by the sautéed calamari which was perfectly cooked and a different approach than your typical fried calamari. I had to order the chicken liver pate crostini and taste and texture was perfect. For dinner I had a special - burrata ravioli in vodka sauce which I loved (how can you go wrong?) And for dessert we shared the bread pudding which was delicious and moist. We will definitely be back! read more

Found this restaurant after searching on Google for a location convenient for our visit to the Met Cloisters. Food was great even for our friend who was visiting from abroad, and for my husband who's normally very picky with Italian food. Vast number of menu items--they have 4 separate menus! Quite a few vegetarian options for yours truly. However, what impressed me the most was the quality of service--place was packed, especially with a large group of elderly women on a reunion (seemed like) but we were still looked after well. Despite being a bit cramped, the servers squeezed in and out with everything we needed. They were very patient and attentive. The only 2 reasons why I'm removing one star here is because of the limited space, and because their single restroom has a long waiting line outside it. Also pretty reasonably priced. I just went for an early dinner with wife and daughter and loved the ambiance. The service is outstanding and the place is really beautiful. Now to the food. Fried calamari: nice and crisp. Linguine frutti di mare: I was hoping for more variety of seafood, but the dish was solid. Tagliata toscano: the meat was deliciously marinated, but came a little too chewy... it was hard to cut it. Mac & cheese: sooo rich! Very yummy. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. They go above and beyond to make you feel "safe", which is pretty much the reason we went. I have heard great things about this restaurant but never got around to trying it & then Covid hit... Despite my nerves about eating out I decided to test out eating on their patio. As soon as I walked in I was offered hand sanitizer, the tables looks spotless and were socially distanced and had little barriers between each table! The servers were very friendly and fully masked. I started with the crostini which was delicious and fresh. The basil lemonade cocktail was very refreshing on such a hot day! The order the Italian sausage pappardelle (daily special) and it was AMAZING! I was afraid the sausage would make it greasy or the portion would be small but it was neither. Saggio is a well-renowned Italian restaurant, and with good reason. First, their service is fantastic; everyone, from the busboy to the server to the host, was so professional and welcoming. Second, the ambiance is extremely cozy and romantic. I went with a friend and I thought it had the most intimate interior I've experienced in quite some time. Third, their food is seriously great! My friend got a butternut squash rosemary gnocchi and I tried it - it may have been the best pasta I've ever had. I got a chicken salad and it was so well-crafted, plated, and seasoned. It had goat cheese and pistachios, and the bed of greens was so fresh and high-quality. And fourth, it's all so reasonably priced! I couldn't believe how good everything was for how much we were paying - and what's great is that the place feels like it's so much more expensive than it is. Saggio is doing everything so right. FYI, they do pasta lunch specials! You definitely should come here for that, because their pasta is homemade is just overall perfect and authentic. Ideal dining experience! Easily my favorite spot near 181st street. Fantastic Italian cuisine, cool staff and good vibes. The bar is a great evening spot but when it gets busy it can get really crowded at the bar-top. I recommend the salmon and polenta entree on the weekends, but their gnocchi is to die for. Occasionally they'll have a burrata ravioli that is incredible.
