Sahib was an "accidental" find during our trip to Ashville. We were not going to be able to make it in time for other halal places to be open so we decided to give this place a try and man are we glad we did so? You can probably understand the depth of their authenticity when I say that "even my mom complimented their food". Their biryani was wonderful and so were their paratha, some of which I have brought home with me to Orlando. Amazing food and very attentive staff. I ordered the lamb biriyani. I think it must be meant for two-three people. It was huge and it was divine! They were very busy on a Thursday night. Most tables full and many people coming in for carry out. We did have a reservation but I don't think they asked for it when we arrived, so it must not be all that important. The menu food is very good although I would rate the lunch buffet about a 3.5. We went with 9 people for dinner on a Saturday night and they were able to seat us in a few minutes. They made mango lasses to order while we waited and dressed them up with chocolate and whipped cream for the younger guests. The service was excellent and the staff very engaging. Let me say that the food is delicious.The best Indian food I have had anywhere in the U. S. The downside is that two lunch buffets cost $34 ,tx and tip included ! My very first time trying Indian food! The food was very good I ended up ordering mine medium and it was a little hot but still great. I had initially went to try the buffet as I'd never had Indian food and was wanting to try a selection but it was closed due to COVID. My girlfriend got the dish with mango in it and it was very good as well she got hers mild which is what I should have got. The staff was friendly and the portions were a decent size. We love this place so much! We drive over an hour and a half just to dine here. The good first-Vick is the best host I have seen in any restaurant. He could be transplanted to a Joel Rubichon and be an asset. The menu options are splendid. The location is premium, outdoor seating and decor thoughtfully arranges. Following the proprietors lead, all service staff is pleasant and cheerful. That shows good management. The physical menus-- the paper, lettering, art, cleanliness-- are great. Even premium. The food itself is not bad. It is difficult to find and retain a good chef in a remote locale such as Johnson city. Making visas difficult to come by doesn't help. However, it is hard to rank a restaurant "5 star", if the food is "not bad". It is indoor seating and ambience that perhaps could do with some attention. The floors could be vigorously cleaned, lighting bumped up a notch, and seating warmed up a touch. These are all easy improvements to implement, and should be expressly addressed. read more

Overall very disappointed in this place. I made sure to call ahead to even see if there were vegan options for myself and my husband. I mentioned specifically a vegetarian dish and asked if it could be made vegan. He assured me that it could be and that they could make anything on the menu vegan. AWESOME! We go in and when we went to place our order I mentioned the specific item that I'd already discussed on the phone and he told me no. That the only options were the alu gobi and the channa masala. We got that. I wanted to also order some appetizers. I asked if the mulligatawny soup could be made vegan, he said no. Okay. We then asked about the vegetable samosas he also said, no. He said I can get some bread made for you that's vegan. We were like yeah that'd be great. We waited almost an entire hour just to get our food. Near the end of eating we got the roti; which was just one cold circular piece of bread, cut into fourths. The food was not impressive either. . This was not impressive by any means. All of this shocked me because of how busy the place was. The hair in my food was also a nice touch, as well as the table behind me that mentioned there was a bug in their food. Overall, the food was basic and nothing special. I would not go back again or recommend this place. I'm sure there're other wonderful places to go visit. read more

Absolutely amazing. We have been eating there for years. The owner, Vik, makes every effort to make sure his customers are well taken care of--and that his food is top notch. We went for Valentine's Day and although the place was packed, he helped staff clear tables and made certain we (and everyone around us) received excellent and efficient service. This place just gets better and better - anytime I'm in town, I make sure to go here and order enough food to take home with me to enjoy throughout the week. The feta stuffed naan is my single favorite thing, but the entrees have all improved from their already-quite-good status over the last couple of years. The shrimp impli dish is a favorite, along with any of the lamb or chicken entrees. Everything is always packaged well for to-go orders and phone ordering is a breeze. This place does not serve authentic Indian food. The Indians that live in Johnson City doesn't even eat here. They would rather go to Asheville or Atlanta and actually have a quality meal than to go here. They have make the food very Americanized and not very flavorful and because of that it's very bland tasting-for those that are used to actual true authentic Indian food. Their chicken Tikka masala is bland. They use chicken breast , very small pieces, and they put more gravy so it makes you think you're getting more food. They give you a very small amount of rice which makes you either have to order more rice or more nann for the item that you ordered. Their chicken biryani is dry is they don't garnish it well. I've eaten here for lunch buffet so I could have a better option to try different dishes. Here's the problem. We have been to Sahib several times and it has mostly been a fair, three and a half star eatery. I'm therefore sad to say that our most recent experience was awful. First, it's a pleasant place to sit, there's plenty of parking and the menu contains a wide variety. However this evening, the service was abysmal from greeting to departure. Second, the food. The samosas were average at best. The appetizer sampler was equally forgettable. The chicken korma was nice. But then, there arrived the worst plate of food I have ever been served in any restaurant, anywhere. It was recommended and, of course, it was the most expensive meal on the specials menu. It was a lamb-spinach mess which looked as though it had already been eaten once. The taste matched it's appearance. I have eaten some savage looking food in a lifetime of world travel. But this meal, on this night won the gong for the worst ever. I reiterate, usually this is a good restaurant. But the awful service and food, on this particular occasion, will prevent me from returning anytime soon. I think it may have been a one off bad night with not enough servers, and perhaps the boss was cooking because his chef didn't turn up. I certainly hope that is the case read more

I'm a regular here -- known by name and greeted enthusiastically every time I arrive, or at least whenever Sam is working. I most frequently partake of the buffet items and I am particularly fond of the palak paneer (when available), their always delicious chicken tikka masala, and the many varieties of delicious korma. From the menu, the Nutty Naram Garam (named after a film, I am told) is my absolute favorite. I could really go on ad-nauseam about the merits of this place, but I'll get right to the point: the flavors are complex and hearty and the staff are always attentive and entertaining. read more
