Not bad, not amazing, so what can I say? The food had flavor, it was satisfying. I can't seem to pinpoint what type of food they specialize in however. Are they Vietnamese? Is it Thai food? Is it Chinese food? It seems to be all of the above which makes me a little skeptical that I am not getting the freshest ingredients, best quality of food. I felt compelled to write a review as I feel this place is getting an unfair knock from others that are setting an insanely high bar. Comparing it to joints out on The Buf? That's a little bit like walking into Chipotle and whining because it's not authentic Mexican. Saigon is definitely closer to tradition than say...a Chipotle is, and offers Thai dishes, Asian appetizers, Southeast Asian fare, curry, stirfry noodles, noodles salads, and pho. I've had darker, more fragrant pho broth elsewhere (We Suki Suki... nom!), and I've had lighter. I actually really enjoy Saigon's pho because it IS a dish that's not heavy but still very flavorful. It's just slightly off from being pho-nomenal but it's certainly not faux-nominal. It's light and bright and should make your taste buds happy. I've had the beef broth twice: once in restaurant with meat and once to go without meat. (32 ounces of broth to go is $2.95, and the side of noodles/onions/basil/cilantro/bean sprouts is $2. Easily feeds two people!) Both times, the service was five stars. I asked for additional fresh jalapeños, as I like my food spicy. My server had them out to me super fast and also recommended some chili oil to ramp up the heat. When they noticed I only drank a fourth of my beverage, I was given a fresh to go cup so I could make it back in time to work for my meeting. My check came out and was processed quickly. My take order was also quick and flawless. Both times my basil was fresh and packed with flavor. It is what I consider to be 'backyard basil' - it's not the fluorescent pea green, packed full of GMO, thin butter-lettuce type basil you pay $8 for at Publix. It has an entirely different look, texture, and much more flavor. If people aren't used to seeing basil like that I can understand how they would get hung up on it. Dining in, I asked the folks at the tables near me what they thought of their food and they all highly recommended their dishes, which were a mix of curries, rice dishes, and noodles. I'm keen to go back and try the coconut soup that I saw on a handful of tables, and some of the bun - Vietnamese noodle salads. i'm not a fan of bubble teas but I will give theirs a try. The lunch combos seemed fairly priced for the amount of food and variety. I would love to be closer to Buford Highway, but I'm not. Saigon is not the café we want but it is the café we need. They provide Smyrna with a destination touting multiple Asian offerings, prices are affordable (the people complaining about $10 dishes that leave you with leftovers need to stop eating off the dollar menu at McDonald's. When did you get so righteous, Smyrna?!). With Saigon being minutes from both my house and office, I wish them longevity... both for their sake and mine. So far their health rating is 100 (show me that, Buford Highway!)... i'm just happy to see something besides failed pizza businesses popping up in Smyrna. read more

My coworker was excited to find out that there was Vietnamese restaurant which opened up down the street from our offices. We decided to try it out during lunch on a Friday. We called in for a table of for seven and good thing we did. Even though the restaurant opens at 11am, it was already busy with diners. The space of the restaurant is pretty tight and small. FOOD & BUBBLE TEA: - H3: Tieu Chau - slightly different from Pho as it is chicken broth based versus Pho's beef broth based. This noodle soup comes with BBQ pork (xa xieu), shredded chicken breast, and three pieces of shrimp. The soup is topped with aromatic chives, green onions, minced garlic, and dried shallot onions. With Tieu Chau, you get to choose your noodle: egg, rice, or clear noodle. I chose the rice noodle. I thought this noodle soup was good as well as my coworkers who were able try it out. I liked the shredded chicken in the soup. The noodle soup comes with a side of bean sprouts, cilantro, lime, thinly sliced jalepenos, and basil leaves. - Thai Tea - I ordered this with boba (tapioca). The Thai Tea & boba are good. What it should tastes like and the boba is pretty fresh. I looked at my coworkers' orders (such as the Com Bo Luc Lac) and I thought they all looked slightly different from what I'm used to seeing at other Vietnamese restaurants along Buford Highway. My coworkers enjoyed their orders. Also from looking at their drink orders of bubble tea, it looks like the Thai Tea and the Passionfruit Green Tea are good. I wouldn't suggest the other bubble teas. My coworker ordered the a bubble milk tea and I could see the powder floating around the drink. SERVICE: Service was okay. I would say that it's pretty standard in an Asian restaurant. It was lunch time and it was really busy. There were only maybe two to three servers (who also attended to the front "hostess stand" and the kitchen/bubble tea making). It took a bit of time to get our bill, but I understand seeing how busy it got over lunch. Overall, I will probably only eat here in the future with coworkers. What happens when you have low expectations? You get a better experience than you expected. Yes, that's what happened to me. With all the really bad reviews on Yelp and my friend saying that Saigon Cafe near Cumberland sucks so bad. I was scared to try. But because my curiosity got the best of me, I was like why not? Saigon Cafe is located off Cobb Parkway and Cumberland Blvd in the same plaza as Kuroshio Sushi Bar and Grille. We were greeted and seated right away. The menu was a lot more extensive than I thought it would be. They have more than pho, yay, and more than Vietnamese. Yay! I was so close to ordering the pad thai but opted for the Singaporean noodles cause I wanted to try something new. That's just how I am. My friend did get her pho. I also ordered the shrimp summer rolls to share with my co-worker. The food came out fast. I was surprised. The summer rolls were okay. The peanut sauce was just okay. Singaporean noodles was good but not spicy so I put a bunch of hot chilly garlic sauce in it, twice. It was huge and had a lot of shrimp. I wasn't able to finish it. I love the curry kick to it. My co-worker loved the pho. She is Thai but very Americanize and haven't had it in a while. Overall, much better than expected. Guess good enough to go for non pho dishes. I only ate here once and I will NEVER eat here again. Ordered a lunch special, when I arrived to pick it up the price was different than what was online on their website. I told the women that and she's stated "did you go on the right website." So I showed her the website and she said "Oh sorry the price wrong online." I was annoyed but still purchased the food because of their reviews. Well that was a mistake, when I ate it for my lunch break at work I found a piece of hair in it. I have blonde hair .. and the hair in the food was black. I then called the restaurant back notified the manager about my issue and the manager told me if I brought the plate back up he will remake it. I stated that I threw it away (why would I keep a plate that had hair?) He then told me he cannot honor a remake because I threw it away. I instantly got upset and expressed to him that this was my first time ever eating there and I'm really disappointed, he said that he can give me 20%. Excuse me.. I first was overcharged because honestly you needed to honor the price online, then I have hair in my food and the best you can give me is 20% off my next meal? Today I went in a decided to try out their smoothies. HUGE mistake and honestly a waste of money. My smoothie never felt "frozen"; it was watery from the start and only got worse. There is an enormous amount of syrup in this as well, I would have much preferred a real fruit. Basically everything has separated and there is no way I'll drink this disgusting thing. Are my days of driving to Buford Highway for Vietnamese finally over?! Nope (SIIIIIIIIIGH) First, it's not just a Vietnamese menu, although it's heavily featured. There are also Thai and Chinese dishes. I played it safe and got a rice & grilled pork combo, as I often do. They were meh at best. The meat is cooked differently than the other places I've been to (Pho Da Loi, I Luv Pho); it's greasier, tougher, and seems like it was cooked twice. It's kind of like comparing a solid burger to a double cheeseburger from McDonalds-- there's just something genuine missing. I also had some Tom Yum soup to start, and it was solid but not special. Decor wise, of course it looks brand new with the recent opening. There is a strage glass wall when you enter, and I can already see some people smacking themselves trying to turn left to walk into the restaurant. The staff was friendly enough too. I just don't see myself coming back because it didn't satisfy my craving. It's like getting that "almost" flavor, but you'll regret missing out on the real thing. This is a good spot for decently priced food. Their Tom Kha Coconut soup is awesome. We usually order it with no meat and it's just the perfect dish for a spicy savory craving, a large can definitely satisfy two people so ask for an extra bowl. Their Lo Mein is always delicious as well. It's all about the sauce for me and it's very similar to a Hoisin flavor but all their own. We always are surprised by the bill being surprisingly low for the amount of food we order. read more

On a chilly day in Atlanta I came here for some Pho. I was greeted by Devin who was super sweet. I ordered the Pho Tom (shrimp in beef broth) and added thinly sliced beef. Though I ordered a small it was quite a big bowl. The broth was absolutely delicious. It was very flavorful and I loved all the veggies on the side that I got to put in my soup. I love Saigon cafe. My #B1 take out with Thai ice tea just made my day...had to come back again next day. I was told the place opened up over a year ago, but they are in great shape - bathroom is clean, tables are always wiped down, etc. this is typical Asian family owned business but unlike some ghetto take out, Saigon cafe cares about how they present themselves on food, quality, and customer service. So my food - grilled pork was well marinated and yummy, and ban rice noodle was prepared just right. Portion was just the right size and hit the spot. I would definitely come back again. Even for someone who has never tried Vietnamese food they have very nice options that's not too foreign and should give a try this place. read more

I used to frequent Saigon Cafe years ago and it has always been a solid Pho joint. When I heard a Saigon Cafe is open in my neighborhood, I was more than excited. However, our anticipation turned into disappointment. I ordered Pho with meat balls and RARE eye round. When my food arrived, it was the saddest looking bowl of Pho.....tiny pieces of WELLDONE beef struggling to stay afloat. The broth is meh - slightly too salty and slightly lack depth. Wife complained that her Bun is not very good. It was overcooked and not adequately drained - which led to a soupy soggy mess at the bottom. I tasted the vermicelli and can't find any flavor....even after wife poured the entire serving of sauce on it. I also tasted the shrimp patty....it just doesn't feel right, not sure what, other than the bean curd to shrimp ratio is on the high side. Wife nevertheless finished the whole bowl with the help of our trusted, reliable friend, Mr. Sriracha. We received a free Thai tea with bubbles for checking in on Yelp.....again, underwhelming. It's so sweet I swear I was drinking tea flavored sugar water. Also worth noting is the price of the entrees is often $1 to $2 higher than that of other Vietnamese places. I really hope the quality would improve over time. Until then, I won't be returning. read more

If you are Vietnamese, won't come here. Pho is very bad. You will be frustrated. I feel like the owner isn't Vietnamese so they really don't know how Vietnamese food taste, especially Pho. The broth isn't good. I am sure they didn't make broth from beef bone. This is my Pho with few slide of beef and terrible broth. Plus: the noodles taste sour that's mean it's old. Bun Thit Nuong is good (fish sauce is not really good but not bad). Goi Cuon is almost $5 with 2 very small one. I've tried many Vietnamese restaurants and this one is not good. I popped in for a comforting bowl of pho during lunch on a weekday. The place was steady - not super busy - not vacant. My server was personalityless but attentive. I ordered an XL pho with the intent on taking some of the broth to go. The noodles, beef, and accoutrements were all fine. The basil was a little past its prime but it was usable. The usual add-ins were at the table as you'd expect. I appreciated that the noodles weren't over-cooked - no blobs of noodle mass in the bottom of the bowl. It was steaming hot, just as it should be. The broth was a total letdown. The Vietnamese would be ashamed. The menu goes on and on about how the broth is fragrant, clear, and mahogany. Lies. There was no fragrance. There was no clarity. There was no mahogany. It looked like cloudy dishwater. I would be amazed if there was a process of hours of beef bones being simmered in the kitchen... If that wasn't bad enough, this nonsense liquid in which my noodles and beef are bathing is the saltiest pho broth I've ever tasted. It was terrible. Pho is 99% broth. So these guys 99% failed. I ate the pho innards (eww!) and avoided the salty liquid monstrosity as best as possible. I should have sent it back and left, but that's not really my style. The to-go broth intention fizzled. I wasn't going to worry with transporting salt-rich dishwater for subsequent pouring down the drain. There aren't many places for pho in this area - one good one on Pat Mell - but if newbies try pho for the first time at Saigon, they are unlikely to enjoy it as a satisfying, comforting alternative like I do. Quick and easy lunch break spot! The food is decent, the service was quick and efficient, and the prices are good for lunch. Having class around the windy hill area I knew that traffic gets super congested around lunch, so I needed to find somewhere I could go for a quick 45 min lunch and be back in a timely manner. I was craving Asian, particularly Vietnamese so the closest was Saigon cafe. Having eaten at other locations I knew it would be a quick lunch, and this place didn't disappoint. I was immediately greeted upon arrival and sat in a corner table since it was only me. Didn't bother me since I wanted to eat and run. My server came by quickly after being sat and asked for my drink order. Something I suddenly realized is that in most Vietnamese restaurants they never introduce themselves. I think I may just ask for there names next time and throw them off lol. Any who I checked in on yelp and found that there was a 50% off deal for drinks, so I questioned if it was good for the coffee as well. She said it did, so I got an ice Vietnamese coffee for $1.50. I thought that was a deal. :) The coffee came out and she proceeds to educate me how to wait for the coffee to stop drinking and pour it into the ice. I think this is good for people since not everyone knows how it operates. So for my coffee I like it weaker because I'm a weak sauce so I added some extra water to it and the coffee came out just perfect for me :) Who doesn't love condescended milk and good coffee. For lunch I ordered the Vietnamese Hu tieu with egg noodles, shrimp, imitation crab, fish balls, and quail eggs. It was good but I've had better, but it most definitely helped with my cravings and it's much closer so I can't complain. read more

Saigon cafe is all over Atlanta. Some locations are hit or miss. This one is pretty good. My girlfriend has a gluten allergy and badly wanted fried rice. We asked the waitress if it could be made without soy sauce. To our pleasant surprise, the chefs accommodated and made shrimp fried rice without added soy sauce. And you know what? It was really good! I finished it off when my girlfriend couldn't finish anymore. As for myself, I ordered a nice big bowl of seafood soup with rice noodles. It had shrimp, squid, fish balls, and imitation crab meat. While some of the ingredients seemed slightly artificial, everything was good and you get a lot for your money. There are better restaurants to get pho or fried rice, but you have to go to Buford Highway or Duluth. It's nice to have a place in Cumberland that can at least satisfy a craving if you want any of those things. read more

Came in for Pho, left happy!! First and foremost the service was fantastic. Our waitress helped us with the menu, and adjusted my order so I'd get the most chicken & shrimp in my soup. When I wanted to take my leftovers home she packed it up for me. She even kept the noodles & meats separate from the broth & told me the best way to reheat it. We had the beef salad appetizer and it was SPICY & delicious! The medium bowl of pho is HUGE! Came out fast and was steaming hot. I got chicken & shrimp. Plenty of Thai basil, sprouts, lime, jalapeños & cilantro come on the side. It's a nice substitute for my favorite joint when I can't make it to Buford highway.
