Went here last night for our Anniversary, and to say the least I was not impressed at all with the service. The place was not that packed, but they only have one person who is serving the food. You would think by now that they would need more then one person on the floor, but for some reason they don't. Came here after a concert at Rodney Strong Vineyard late on a Sunday night....the tempura and tuna sashimi were delicious...the service was very good too. Cool and dark and relaxing even thought the restaurant was crowded. All in all, a very nice evening. What I didn't realize was that I dropped my small purse under the table (license, credit card, money)......the next day I called and got the good news that Frank the owner had my purse and since I had headed home..3 hours away....he would mail it to me. having just moved to the area, I was keeping my fingers crossed that Sake O would have more than just a most basic menu... but, was not to be. I was so disappointed with their most basic offering of the most usual of japanese/american fare... teriyaki and tempura... whoop-dee-do. and sorry to say, the atmosphere is so incredibly dull and dead feeling. I never liked sushi until I came and ate here. I'm a local and this is my first choice when going out for sushi. The Dragon roll is delicious along with the Lion King Roll. A dessert you must try is the fried banana. It's amazing. It comes with ice cream and it's just awesome. If you want sushi in healdsburg, Sake-o is the place. read more

I've supported this place for years, but my meal tonight an overall disappointment. The cold towel to wipe my hands should have been the first indication. My miso was blah. Tofu appetizer was ok, but greasy. I didn't order the Uni this time because it has been such a let-down in the past. As always our MSG-filled Martini Prawns were amazing, hot, crunchy and Umami-d out, but it was not enough to make up for the entirely underwhelming Soft shell crab dish. For $8.50, we received a meager sized portion of over-fried crustacean. To be fair, Sake-O consistently has great vegetarian rolls, and their specials are often satisfying. I was just so bummed tonight that I had to write a review to express my dismay over the expensive and tiny soft shell crab. Worst food ever have had. Flavor was good but was only able to eat less than 3 peaces of my eel! It had BONES threw out it!!! When the waiter finally came over I complained and he tried to tell me that usually happens. I told him how eel is my fav and that I had never found bones any were else. He then took the dish off the check. I thought it was rude he want to tell me that how it is. So after not getting to eat my meal I walked over to the drug store next door got a box of cereal for dinner I am a local but this is one local restaurant I will not be eating at ever again! This is one of our favorite places. We go nearly once a week, if not every other. The service is great!! They remember us and when we walk in they immediately start getting our Sapporo and hot sake ready. We like to sit at the bar, always start the night off with the martini prawns and stuffed jalapenos. The Hamachi Jalapeno Carpaccio is a must!!! Rolls - my top two is the Green Spicy Hamachi & Crazy Roll. We try just about everything fresh and it's always delicious. This was our first time in. We walked in 5 minutes after opening (4:05pm). The door was locked. That's not an issue, just prefacing the story. A lady opened the door and I asked if they were open and she reluctantly says we can sit where we want. We sit down, and are the only customers in the restaurant for the entire duration of our meal. As my fiancé orders her usual hamachi sushimi (raw tuna) at $17 the lady says "that's all you want" she says "well it comes with miso soup and salad right?" Wrong, they're asking $17 for 7 pieces of tuna. At any other Japanese restaurant we pay that and it comes as a meal with soup and salad. Time for me to order. Okay, so I can either get just teriyaki chicken for 17.95 or I can get my usual teriyaki chicken and mixed tempura for 22.95. What a difference! In other Japanese restaurants those two meals are under the same area of the menu and are usually the same price! So okay this place is a bit expensive---no big deal to me, I'll pay whatever cost just so my fiancé can have her tuna. We frequent Japanese restaurants just because she is IN LOVE with her tuna. The food was great, no complaints there it tasted wonderful, however, remember how we're the only customers in the restaurant. Not a single time does our waitress come to check on us. Not once. Matter of fact, when we were finished, we waited so long that we just decided to stack our plates so they'd notice we were finished. BUT still no one comes back out. Finally the manager walks back in. (He left right as we sat down) He writes up a bill for us and puts in on the table. Our dirty, empty dishes remained on the table until my card was dropped back off. My bill was 49.95. We got tuna, a bento box, a sprite and a lemonade. I usually leave a full 20% tip if not more, but that day I only left 10%. The food was great, don't get me wrong, but everything else was just so terrible, and being the ONLY customers in the restaurant, I feel that I should be leaving happy not unsatisfied. read more

Not original and not traditional. Limited menu. No one speaks English and they are not very friendly. Weird atmosphere, no music and screaming children, you could hear everyone's conversation around you. I sat at the sushi bar and it was very hot from the grill. I only ate sushi and it was so-so. Tempura prawns small and tempura was rather tough, salad was drowning in dressing (but was pretty good dressing so if you go, order it lightly dressed and ask them to toss it instead of dumping it on top) , spicy tuna roll good but nothing special, teriyaki chicken average and in bland jar sauce, California roll with bento box very average. Service amateurish and slow , and the chef and waiter were outside on patio eating in full view before I had even finished my meal; their young daughter rode her scooter through the restaurant at one point. Very nice people, and that counts for something but these are not high end pros. I'd put up with the mom n pop idiosyncrasies if the food was better, but this place is average to below average and unfortunately for us, it's the only sushi joint in town. Sake O is average to below average depending on what you order. If you're looking for great sushi or Japanese fare, you're going to have to drive into the city because this will only disappoint. If you can't hold out to get into S.F. and have to have a sushi fix, stick to the very basics - some maki and nigiri, drink a lot of sake and beer, and don't order the entrees. read more

Sake 'O has the best customer service of any sushi restaurant I've ever been to, and I've been to many! We arrived after closing and they still allowed us to place a to-go order, which we really appreciated. The sushi chefs and the manager were so friendly, they took great care of us by making sure we had everything we needed, and the sushi and gyoza were all delicious!! The food is excellent, but the service is terrible. Food- we had the rainbow roll, the Volcano roll, and California rolls. All pretty good. Volcano roll is very spicy, in a good way. Seems expensive though. The waiter doesn't pay attention to you at all, or check on you to see if you need anything, or really even look at you. I was looking at the Sake menu during dinner and it was obvious I was going to order some, but he brought our food and took off before I could. Lost a sale. Same with dessert... no offer of it at the end, and we were interested. Lost another sale. Never refilled our water. It's hard because we like coming there for the food and ambiance, but your staff needs some coaching on salesmanship or being friendly or something! read more

I have to say...Sake O is getting better and better as the years go by! I'm only writing a review in this moment because I'm craving their rolls! They have a new roll (I think it's new) that I tried with my son on Mother's Day. It's called the Lion King Roll. Oh my gosh! To die for!!! It surprised me. Sake O has never been fancy or pretentious, I don't feel as if they are trying to be anything they are not. Simple, consistently good, Japanese food. True, the owners are not Japanese, but the food is. I read someone complaining about the decor.........don't dock them for that....it just ads character to the place. I even gave them some Japanese art at some point....I don't know where it ended up........clearly not on the walls! But Sake O is not out to impress with anything but their food....which is why I love it. Good price points. Consistent quality. Service is ok, not the greatest...and the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars......but it's not because of attitudes, just sometimes slow. Not always. Sometimes. They have their core staff, all family I think, so when it gets busy...you can tell. I always find them friendly and committed to their clients. The food was great! I loved the prawn martini, that is my new favorite. It is a little pricey, but still worth a visit.

We tried Sake-o last night for the first time. It was not crowded at all and we were promptly seated. It did take a while to get a waiter to our table, but not really a big deal. We each ordered the martini prawns for an appetizer, and for dinner we would share the tempura vegetables and prawns. Before we even got our glass of wine, the dinner salad appeared, and shortly after that the soup arrived. Our wine was next, then the martini prawns, and a very short time after that was the dinner. We felt SO rushed thru the entire meal. That was a BIG turn off for us, even tho the food was excellent. We really did not have any time at all to enjoy and savor the food as it all came so fast and almost all at once. Because of this, we will most likely not be going back. They need to take lessons on how to serve courses in the proper time frame. read more

RUDE !RUDE! RUDE! No acknowledgement when entering and from there it gets worse.. 3/4 of the tables were full with people drinking water , waiting for a waiter or food. A Saturday night and they had one waiter for the entire room.It was all about take-out and taking phone orders. They had 4 chefs, and no one in the restaurant was being served.Brought sparkling wine in and needed an ice bucket, which they had, and asked twice for one to cool down the wine. The owner came over and started to open the bottle and we said no we just need a bucket, don't open it, it's warm. He threw his towel down walked away and went to the counter to bag up more take out. We knew the night would only get worse. SERVICE IS HORRIBLE! That is part of a dining experience. Off to Windsor or Santa Rosa for Sushi from now on read more

Been here twice now and eagerly await going back. Both times have been really fantastic. Definitely an upper end atmosphere and price range, but not astronomical and the food does not disappoint at all. Reservations recommended for anything resembling a weekend/holiday. read more
