I was really impressed with this restaurant and their offerings. They seemed to have a great sushi selection and the sushi eaters in my group were happy. I am more into the other Japanese food, and found plenty to choose from. We tried their curry, tempura, ramen, seafood yam soup, and fried rice. I really can't pick a favorite as they were all excellent. We have a Toyota factory near my hometown and several high quality Japanese restaurants, so I have high expectations for Japanese food. Unfortunately we pulled up to Sake Sushi and were not even welcomed into the restaurant. A server or someone who works there literally just called out to us while we were in our car (not even knowing if we were in fact trying spend money at your restaurant) that they were full and to try coming back tomorrow. Wow. No thank you. It was 6:15 pm, and online it said it closes at 9:30. We will not try coming back tomorrow. We felt unwelcome as out of towners. I thought when I moved from a large city to a small mountain town I would be giving up so things. Being able to run to a Macy's or Nordstrom quickly (the closest ones are three hours away). Being able to get away with not investing time in people, small towns like to get to know each other. And different types of foods. I figured there would be an Italian place and a BBQ place, but I thought sushi would be a pipe dream. I am so glad I was wrong. It took me a while to try this place because I was so afraid that it would be bad. Good sushi is so good, but bad sushi is just gross. And I was so glad that I was wrong. I went here with my boyfriend's sister and I just loved it. The atmosphere felt private even though the restaurant was full and were at a table in the middle. There is a sushi bar to sit at as well. We ordered several rolls and I was so happy to see not only the standards, California roll, Philadelphia roll, Rainbow roll, etc, but some unique rolls such as avocado eel and tempura sweet potato. We had several rolls to share, she had a hand roll of one, and we had sashimi. They do have more than sushi so you can go with someone who doesn't like it. If you can be at a table with someone who doesn't like sushi. I am like, whatever more for me. The prices were what you would expect for sushi. And I gladly paid it for those rolls. Good food and a kind and caring staff, what more could you ask for? I enjoy a few staples here, like spicy tuna roll, they make a salmon skin hand-roll that isn't on the menu but it's delicious. Their freshwater eel/unagi is good, they have a small but diverse selection of beers on tap. I brought my 18 month old daughter in and wasn't sure what she would like, the chef made here a small plate with cucumber and avocado and she ate every bite. Nice place with good old fashioned friendly customer service. The world needs places like this now more than ever. Will certainly be back. read more

I have to say, I was surprised at how good the sushi was here. I ate the rainbow roll and it was as good as the ones I had in the Bay Area (California). Seriously. Got take out during COVID restrictions so we were unable to dine in. Food tasted very fresh and balanced. I had the steak bento box. The variety was great, very aromatic miso soup, but the steak needed a little more kick in my opinion. My husband had two sushi rolls which he enjoyed. This is a really good sushi restaurant. We are from New York and were here on business. Being from NY I feel like we have a good understanding of sushi and this restaurant makes the grade as far as I'm concerned. I had two sushi rolls which were well made and very fresh. I requested sea urchin or "uni". Waitress was honest and said it is not the season for uni. Could have faked it. Another member of our party had a "Bento Box". More food than he could handle. Probably won't ever be back in this area so it is unlikely that I will be able to eat here again. My loss, so you should try it in my place. You won't regret it. Bonus. The sushi was pretty good. My niece got the hibachi & enjoyed it very much. We also had the crab & tuna Rangoons, which were different because of the addition of the tuna (different texture & less creamy than a traditional Rangoon) - but not bad. I got the spicy salmon and sweet potato roll (my typical go to) and I was not let down! Best sushi I have had in a long time. Fish portions were great. Didn't feel like they were trying to fill me up with rice. I ordered a two roll lunch special that came with a house salad that was certainly above average for comes with salad and of course had delicious ginger dressing. I also received a second appetizer salad from the chef and when my rolls arrived I was very happy I stopped. While the service and sake selection were great, I wasn't overly impressed with my entree-- the Chicken Teriyaki Bento box. It's definitely a good value, I ordered it because of the variety of foods for $15, but I almost wish I could have gotten everything except the main course. I enjoyed the soup, shrimp tempura (huge pieces), gyoza, and the California roll, but ended up leaving most of the chicken teriyaki. My friend who ordered the same dish commented that you could tell the chicken was of a low quality, almost rubbery, and I agree. That and generally tasteless. My friends who got the sushi seemed to enjoy their food more, but I can't really comment on the other options. The miso soup was from a packet, but that's not unusual. But the sushi rice was dry and hard! It was almost inedible. The tuna was fishy and we were disappointed that most of the rolls were either deep fried or spicy. That was probably an indicator that the fish itself wasn't very fresh. Hmm. Disappointed. The best sushi in Black Mountain!!! Ok, I'm being a little facetious. To be fair, it's actually the only sushi in town. So, with that in mind, here's my honest review. Service has always been friendly. We've always been greeted and seated in a timely manner. The place is clean and they also have an outdoor seating area. To put it plainly, the food exceeds my expectations. You just don't have high expectations for sushi in a small town like Black Mountain. I've never been utterly disappointed or completely blown away. But, my kids love the fried udon noodles. The food does take its time to come out though. So, if you want a to-go order, I suggest you order well ahead. As I've discovered several times over, there's a decent walk around the neighborhood if it's taking a long time. The other shops around the building are also fun to visit. If you don't want to go all the way to Asheville for Japanese fair, this place will fit the bill. Sake, by far, has THE best sushi my husband and I have had anywhere, in and outside of the Asheville area! Everything is so fresh and the best quality. We enjoy trying new rolls. And their spicy crab salad is also the best we've had anywhere. Again, always so fresh! Their spicy crab salad is always a must for us, whether we are enjoying sushi or their delicious noodle bowls/plates. We also love the intimate atmosphere and love supporting small, local business. The hubs & I wanted seafood during our stay in Black Mountain & the seafood restaurant by our motel had 0 cars in the lot so we opted for sushi at Saki Sushi. We like sushi & they did not disappoint. Ordered a mix of rolls & sashimi. California roll, rainbow roll, yellowtail, scallops, ahi tuna, & smoked eel. The only thing that didn't impress us was the scallops, good but... not #1 on the plate. The others were fantastic. We also ordered something that I cannot remember the name, it was a cucumber roll with cream cheese and avocado & mango I think, in a mango sauce. Not overly sweet & very good & creamy. The presentation was beautiful and all of the food was very fresh & delicious. A little pricey but sushi usually is and it was not outrageous for what we got. 2 of each mentioned above except for 1 each of the rainbow roll & cucumber roll + 2 beers about $60.
