Ras Plant Based is absolutely spectacular! I just finished volunteering at the Brooklyn Half…read moreMarathon and was looking for a vegan restaurant to eat at while visiting this neighborhood and I feel like I hit gold! This 100% plant based restaurant serves Ethiopian food and has some of the best unique flavor profiles I have ever tried. Food Ordered - Mercato Platter --This plate came with a lentil stew, ground chick peas, collard greens, and a pepper/carrot veggie medley. Everything in the platter was amazing - super flavorful and hearty. - Spiced Mac and Cheese --If you told me this Mac and Cheese was dairy free I would think you are trying to pull a fast one. The sauce was super creamy and light and had that amazing cheesy flavor. - Chefs Special --The Chefs Special was the star of the show for me! This dish was Kitfo covered in collar greens and avocado with the most amazing smoky sauce. All of the ingredients went together amazing to create a perfect bite.

The food is so appealing that it's always on our list whenever we are in town. The staff is friendly and we've always had a great experience. They had an outdoor seating area but city rules made them put it away and apply for a permit. They are waiting for approval and plan to put outdoor seating again.

SERVICE - located in Chelsea…read more - spacious interior with tables for groups of 2-4 people - reservations are not required though could be helpful if you do not want to risk waiting - great service! our waiter provided us with comprehensive descriptions of the dishes and drinks - food served relatively quickly - ambiance good for a semi formal meal MENU - french American bistro food - all vegan/vegetarian - slightly pricey FOOD - French dip (7/10): vegan grilled steak with provolone cheese, goat cheese, caramelized onion, and horseradish aioli on a toasted baguette served with a side of au jus dip and fries. This sandwich is usually not something that is available vegetarian so i was curious to see the flavors and textures. The steak is chewy and meaty so if you are not a fan of faux meat then i would proceed with caution. I enjoy the cheeses here as they are unique and different from each other. The sandwich overall was okay though not my favorite sandwich ever. - smoked Mac and cheese (7/10): macaroni with smoked goat cheese, cheddar, mozzarella baked in a cast iron skillet and topped with vegan pancetta and breadcrumbs. This was a cozy appetizer especially on a cold day. The flavors of the cheese are rich and smoky with a hint of saltiness from the pancetta and breadcrumbs. I would have liked it to be a larger portion and offered as an entree. WOULD I GO BACK? Maybe. I liked the ambiance and the option to try dishes that are usually meat heavy but the cuisine is not my personal favorite.

Another long time UWS spot went out in 2024…read more Dropping in for dinner on a Saturday night, the place was packed with people enjoying a meal before this 20yr old vegan eatery closes for good at the end of the month. Our party of 3 got a table and settled in with a couple of appetizers: buffalo arancini + fried artichokes. The arancini were ping pong sized rice balls, chewy and lacking much of a punch, though the "bleu cheese" dipping sauce was pleasantly tangy. The fried artichokes fared better: at once crispy and tender in a tempura batter with a mustardy "aioli" and charred lemon. I did a southern seitan sandwich with sweet potato fries: fried seitan slabs + chipotle sauce + lettuce + avocado + caramelized onions. The seitan was under-seasoned, but the chipotle added some much needed zing. My girlfriend's plate of seitan marsala (seitan + sundried tomatoes + broccoli rabe + mashed potatoes + marsala sauce) was a better dish, if heavier than expected.

Food was quite average and not that delicious. Ordered pistachio tofu - it lacked flavor and the combination of seared tofu with root vegetable filled crepe didn't go well. The southern seitan as well lacked the spice flavor. Over all the food was disappointing :( Service and ambience are great!

The bartender was great & answered all our questions. We had the lunch special & were really shocked it was so much food - especially for it being NYC! Their gelato tastes like it is held together with a non-dairy thickener like guar gum. Their $22 rotisserie chicken is no where's as tasty and tender as the $10 rotisserie chicken at Whole Foods. Their pizza slices are creatively and beautifully crafted, but the vast majority have only a very slight coating of tomato sauce which you cannot taste, and little to no mozzarella. I don't enjoy their $10+ slices nearly as much as the $4 slice down the street. Everything that I order there looks better than it tastes. To be fair though, I have not had a sit-down meal there in a long time. Several years ago I did order a roast beef sandwich at their carving station, and it was nearly 50% hard white fat. WTF. I feel like I just can't win when I try their food. But I LOVE going there so I keep trying. When all is said and done, I love the place. Sometimes they have music and/or tastings, which are fun. So more recently, I just buy a yogurt or cappuccino and enjoy the space.

I finally went with the Botanical Salad, and it was AMAZING. Fresh, flavorful, satisfying, and exactly what I was hoping for. Everything on the menu looked comforting and delicious while still being plant-based and health-conscious. Even though the line was busy, the staff was genuinely friendly. They took the time to answer questions, explain the dishes, and make recommendations without making us feel rushed.
