The flavors in the Sally ricotta were so delicious and I loved the sourdough focaccia. We also dipped our pizza crust in the leftover ricotta. I stopped by Sally looking for a good happy hour drink and good pizza. Unfortunately, I only got one of the two. I stopped by with a friend for Happy Hour and I started off my evening with a good cocktail, which was a form of an Old Fashioned. We also ordered the Ricotta on toast. A good snack, although the bread was a bit too thick so we didn't eat it all in order to save room for the pizza. As I sipped on my cocktail I watched various pizzas make its way to tables, and I noticed that half of them were partially burnt. I was hoping my pizza didn't suffer the same fate. I ordered a cheese pizza with pepperoni and sausage added on. When the pizza arrived we couldn't help but laugh instead of cry. I would have been happy with a partially burnt pizza. This entire pizza was burnt, from the crust to the toppings. You can see what I mean in the attached picture. The crust was not edible and the sausage and pepperoni were too burnt to have much flavor. To serve a pizza this burnt is a disgrace. Apparently nobody making the pizza takes any pride in their work. And the host who brought it over probably had a good laugh at our expense, instead of telling the kitchen she can't serve this. There are a lot of good reviews for Sally, but I can't overlook the lack of care for its customers that serving this type of pizza displays. I will never go back. read more

If you like potato leek soup (or potatoes and leeks in general!) get the potato leek pizza. Since I've eaten it, I can't wait to go back for it again. The best part about the pizza, however, is that it is made with sourdough. Not sourdough made with yeast- this is sourdough pizza dough made with starter!! If you know, you know. We asked the chef. Just fabulous. Not easy to find!! We sat at the bar and the bartender was super cool. The mocktail with honeydew shrub (melon shrub?? Some kind of shrub!) is fabulous. So refreshing. You can see it in my pic. My boyfriend wanted a salad but doesn't like kale so ordered the other salad. The place was already bustling, the music choice was immaculate and the servers/host were all friendly and attentive. Food! We ordered two pies: clam and leek special (weekend only) and a classic cheese. Also ordered the kale Caesar, scallop crudo, sangria and a glass of red wine. The kale Caesar and scallop crudo were equally yum. The scallop ate really clean, with a nice balance of citrus and a small dab of heat. The salad featured granola as the crunch element, nice and nutty surprise. Of course the pizza was the star of the show! The infamous and super limited clam and leek pie was special. Unique flavors but still kept the integrity of a pizza. The cheese pie was impressive as well. Not sure what types of cheese were used, but it offered a few dimensions. Far from flat and certainly not "plain" as the name would suggest. This was almost a 5-star review but the crust of the pizza was burned. Likely in the oven for a minute or two more than it needed to be, since it was such a busy night. (They actually have the wines to back that part up.) The crowd consists of young glamorous lawyers, and trust fund kids coming back from their yoga lessons. If you wanted to marry into wealth, This might be a good place to try your luck, Except that most people come with company in tow. * * * The pizza is SUPERLATIVE. Never mind the fact that their flavors are creative. I had a mushroom and egg pizza that had Mushrooms, jalapeno creme fraiche, scrambled eggs, mozzarella, and smoked honey. Jalapeno creme fraiche ... don't leave home without it. And smoked honey's destiny in life is to be paired with scrambled eggs. This is custard taken to a new level. I was totally totally in love. * * * But the mark of a great pizza place is not necessarily the toppings on the pizza. The mark of a great pizza is the crust. The edge of the pizza is where the fillings come to an end. The edge of the pizza is where you face the crust full on, straight on, dealing with the naked truth behind this pizza. The crust has to be better than the pizza itself. New York pizzas and other forms of Connecticut style flat crust pizzas fail miserably on this count. Chicago deep dish pizzas are marvelous but the crusts are no gem. A straight up plain honest middle thickness pizza is the true test of the crust chef. Sally's edge of the pizza crusts are pure and unadulterated paradise. They will remind you about what pizza eating is all about. And yeah, yeah, yeah ... they cheat. This is a sourdough pizza with a sourdough crust. Sourdough anything is next level anything. Sourdough gives Sally's a huge natural advantage. The only baked good in the world not improved by sourdough is Hostess Twinkies. But even if you start with a sourdough base, You still have to execute. Sally's executes giving you a pizza of wonderment and satisfaction. The last bites of this pizza are even more wonderful than the first bites of this pizza. * * * Sally's makes all the right decisions here. New american, clean and interesting ingredient combos, But unlike a lot of the spots there i think the food was genuinely very good and worth the price. We ordered the golden beets which were cold and came w a delicious bleu cheese sauce. Paired so nicely with the fig cocktail (subtly sweet and wonderful bourbon flavor). Sally is worth the hype. On a Saturday afternoon, a group of my girlfriends and I were in search of an admittedly last minute reservation for 4 that evening. One of us offered up Sally as an idea, and I am now forever indebted to her for this suggestion. I was easily able to make an indoor reservation for the 8:45 PM time slot. The ambiance inside is lovely! It's cute and cozy and I love the velvet booths and artsy light fixture hanging by the bar. It isn't large inside, and I think that people prefer to eat outside here as the outdoor area is covered and somehow seems cozy too?! We were greeted and seated right away. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and made the entire experience feel like having dinner at a friend's house (but a friend that is like, really good at cooking). We were seated right next to the pizza oven so we got a front row seat to the action. This was a late reservation, so we were hungry. We ordered the anchovies, house ricotta, kale caesar, and charcoal grilled shrimp to start. For the main attraction (pizza, duh) we split the plain cheese and greens and garlic. All of this paired with a few glasses of beer and we were all very full by the end of the meal. Every single dish was delicious. We could not get enough of the bread that paired with the ricotta. We asked for another serving and used it to pair with the anchovies and the shrimp sauces. And that kale caear... I can't stop thinking about it. The pizzas were both delicious, I think I preferred the greens and garlic. A few logistical notes so you can plan your visit, the snacks and small plates are definitely small. For our group of four, we were easily able to share but it was more of a taste size than a legitimate portion. Fine by me, I am team share everything because I can't decide on one thing to eat. tl;dr this quaint Fitler Square pizzeria and wine bar punches well above its weight class, slinging delicious pies and seasonal small plates The Filter Square dining scene is dominated by serviceable Italian restaurants, always leaving much to be desired. So, when Sally opened and promised sophisticated pizza -- at the height of the pandemic, no less -- I was skeptical at best. Nonetheless, with few shops open for takeout, my partner and I gave it a try, and we were pleasantly surprised by our solid wood-fired pie and chic yet comforting meatballs. Fast-forward nearly 3 years, and I hadn't returned to Sally for the full dining experience, content with my fleeting memory of the terrific takeout. But when I found myself found myself craving sit-down pizza on a chilly, windy day, Sally was an ideal nearby option. The indoor area is not much larger than a studio apartment, stuffed to the brim with two dedicated bar areas, velvet-upholstered booths, and two-seater tables. Shelves of wine bottles line the windows, and a magenta, heart-shaped chandelier hangs from the slatted ceiling. Outdoors, sophisticated picnic benches are enclosed within a sliding-door pergola. Paper lanterns and strings of twinkle lights are drowned out by the glow of personal convection heaters, radiating as vibrantly red as the Kenny Rogers sign in Seinfeld. My party of 3 arrived at peak dinner hour sans reservation. Although all indoor tables were reserved, there were a handful of bar seats and outdoor tables available, and we opted for the latter. Despite the strong breeze, the benches were a comfortable temperature as long as the sliding doors remained closed -- that being said, I didn't take off my down sweater over the course of the meal, and the wait staff regularly left the doors slightly ajar. Service was brusquely efficient, but we never felt rushed. After browsing the menu, we decided to share the House Ricotta, the Kale Caesar, and the Sausage Pie. Within minutes, a bowl filled generously with ricotta was plopped before us. The ricotta was drizzled with blood orange syrup and candied citrus peel, adding an enjoyable sweetness and chewiness. Even though we generously dolloped the ricotta across our 2 slices of tastefully charred sourdough, we ended up needing another order of bread. The Caesar salad consisted of crisp, shredded kale, tossed with pumpkin seed granola and finely grated cheese. The light dressing felt loosely Caesar-inspired, but it was tasty all the same. Lastly, the pizza sported a classic cheese base, rich but not overly greasy. The flavorful pork sausage and tart, pickled long hots were chopped thinly and spread evenly, so each bite was sure to both each. The leopard-spotted crust was simultaneously thin and sturdy, albeit frankly burnt along some edges. The bill for 3 was right around $60 (after tax and tip). All of the dishes were petite -- expect to order at least 1 plate per person to constitute an even moderately filling meal. I think Sally is fine but nothing to rave about. The pizzas are great and have a lovely char to them. They are quite small for the ~$20 price point- 12 in diameter or thereabouts. Lots of focus on the sourdough bread (and I love sourdough!) but I couldn't really tell the difference between regular dough and this sour dough. The method of preparation is great, though! You can also watch the pizzas cook in their oven, which can be seen from the dining room. I think the small plates and larger shared plates are fine but way overpriced. I'd stick with the pizzas and maybe a light salad for balance if it strikes your fancy. Drinks and cocktails are also quite expensive, but something that certainly elevates Sally is that the cocktails are really, really lovely. The spin on a Negroni that I had last time I was there was one of the best cocktails I've had out in Philly. I haven't sat at the bar, but it is beautiful marble and looks like a fun place to chill and have a drink. It can get a bit loud during peak hours, even during the week. It isn't super cramped but is certainly close quarters. One kind of weird thing that they do is that because the oven is so hot they leave the door open at all times and so sometimes if your table is near the door it can actually be a bit chilly on cold nights. Service is quick as it is a small place. You probably will want reservations on the weekends. We split the House Ricotta with local honey and bee pollen, Kale Caesar (small plate with garlic breadcrumbs and savory granola), Red Pie with stracciatella, and their Special Pizza (which had corn, chanterelle mushrooms, and chives). Everything was spectacular, but I think my favorite was the ricotta. I could have eaten several bowls of that all night long. For dessert, we got a scoop each of blueberry and strawberry ice cream. Really cute trendy spot in the filter square area with awesome vibes and food. There's a simple menu with few options, but from what I can tell, everything is great. We started with the house ricotta, which was so good - tasty orange/fig sauce in there and the bread to dip was better than expected. From there we got two pies: the soppressata and the red pie with add-ons stracciatella and "loud" style. Soppressata was amazing with the meat and peppers and honestly a must-order. The red pie was also a good pick and I'm glad we got it loud (meaning olives, garlic, and spicier sauce). The space isn't huge, but there's nice outdoor seating and cool decor throughout. We had a wonderful dinner here! As soon as you walk in, you can see how this spot is a total vibe. From their neon hanging lights, to their incredible music playlist, you can either sit at the bar or relax in their comfortable booths - all while enjoying great food and wine. While they are obviously known for their pizza, I would highly recommend trying a vegetable or two (besides, it'll make you feel better about the carbs you are about to indulge.) We had their spring zucchini, which did not last at our table for more than a minute. It was THAT good. We enjoyed the red pie with stracciatella, and the garlic & greens pie. Both were great, but the g&g is one of those pies that is just unforgettable. One of those things you write home about. Aside from the toppings, just the way the pizza was cooked itself, was also very enjoyable. Hot brick oven, and the dough was cooked to be thin, light, and fluffy. Rounding out our meal with the cheesecake was a great call. It came topped with fresh fruit and was a perfect night cap to all the 'za. If you live anywhere near center city, I would recommend adding this spot to your list. Not to mention, the service was fantastic. The server was very nice and made good recommendations, but steered us the wrong way with the number of pizzas/small plates. For a group of 3, he recommended 3 pies and "some" small plates, or 2 pies and "3-5 small plates". We ended up getting 3 pizzas and 1 app, which was too much food. The ricotta was the highlight of the meal. So good. Dip your pizza crust since they don't give you enough sourdough. We got a red pie, sausage and onion, and leek. The favorite was definitely the sausage and onion, but the other two were quality pizzas as well. They specialize in natural wine, so I got a glass of white. My friends tried their cocktails and beers, and both said it was average. It is on the more expensive side for pizza, but worth checking out! read more

Very popular new pizza spot that specializes in sourdough pizzas. Went with a group of 4 for outdoor dining. Atmosphere: I really liked the outdoor setup and lighting. I found that the tables were generally well spaced from others too! Servers were very nice and food came out within ~25 minutes. Food: Highly recommend the ricotta and bread - I loved the hint of honey in the ricotta, and it paired very well with their charred bread. The pizzas generally come in 6 pieces, have a thin crust, and come in quite unique flavors! I have never had a mushroom pizza with a full egg on a slice, which we were told to then dip other pizza slices in (to get some of the egg yolk). I also love clam pizza, and found that flavor to be well-done and taste very fresh. Overall: 4/5 - I would love to come back to try other flavors, but did find the pizzas to be a bit pricer than I would've liked ($18/19 for one). Came here for dinner last night for my husband's birthday and I have some mixed feelings. We were running late to our reservation at 7:30pm and they called us when we were about a block away -- I thought that was nice vs. just giving our table away. When we arrived, they asked for vaccine cards and IDs to sit indoors. We weren't expecting that and fumbled to get our cards ready. Woops. Once we were seated indoors, we were both confused by the vibe. We had been to Mama de Palma's before and thought it was a nice old school Italian spot. Sally's was different. The same brick oven was there, and the bottle shop, and the bar, but the decor was slightly different (velvet blue benches in particular were definitely new) and the music was loud and ... hip hop? We noted some songs from the early 2000s for sure, which is my favorite decade of music, but unexpected for a pizza place with bottles of $150 wine on the menu. I'm still really not sure what I think of it. I was happy to see some NA beers (well, 0.5% or less) on the menu as I have been cutting back. I don't usually see that and appreciated it. Also appreciated the small but varied selection of Philly local beers. The wine menu was extensive but we weren't partaking. The food menu was not so extensive -- a handful of appetizers and a handful of pies. My understanding is this selection changes seasonally. We ordered the house ricotta and a plain cheese pie. The house ricotta was amazing! So creamy, which I did not know ricotta had the ability to be, and the hits of fruit and whatnot were really nice. We ordered more bread because even loading up on ricotta we ran out of bread slices. The pizza wasn't as amazing. It looked and tasted like a wood fired greasy slice. Like the kind of comfort food pizza you want when watching a game with friends, not something you'd expect to come out of a wood-fired oven and sit next to expensive bottles of wine on the menu. I think a margherita with basil and thick slices of mozzarella would have been a better "plain" vibe but this place is definitely daring to be different from the usual pizza spots. The service meanwhile was great -- there were a bunch of employees around usually standing by the door/oven waiting to greet guests, deliver a food/drink order, etc. We didn't wait for anything while we were there. Bathrooms in the back were clean and there's a bottle shop separate from the main restaurant for buying beer and wine to take home. If you really enjoyed something, that's a nice touch. Overall, I might come back to try more of those seasonally flavored appetizers if I'm in the mood for a snack, but not sure the pizza hit with me. Our neighbors have been raving about Sally, and after seeing their listing as best new restaurant per Philly Mag, we had to check it out. I also love that Sally requires proof of vaccination for entry, so I felt safe visiting in these odd times. I happened upon their website early in September and was quite surprised to see reservations open for most of the month (I must have gotten to the site just as res were opening because when I've looked previously, EVERYTHING has been booked pretty far in advance), so I eagerly jumped on a reservation for a random Wednesday night because why not. Sally is nicely situated in Fitler Square, so it was very easy for me to get to on foot after a work day in University City. We had reservations for outdoor seating, which was nicely secluded from the actual road and provided our group fo 3 plenty of space to separate from other diners in an adequate space. The outdoor space had a great vibe that we definitely enjoyed! In terms of our meal...my first hearings of Sally mentioned their pizzas at the fore front, but our neighbors speak more highly of their small dishes, so we knew we wanted to try a bit of both options. We also heard good things about Sally's wine selection and focus on natural wines, so we wanted to explore that too. Luckily, our waitress was incredible and provided us many, many suggestiosn for both drink and food. After asking us for our price range and our adventure level with wine, she brought out a lovely bottle of natural wine for the 3 of us to split. We all appreciated her consideration of our budget but also her judgement for what wine would be best, and we all enjoyed the wine - it was a refreshing, light, and had very natural flavors. For our table of 3, out waitress suggested we split 3-4 small plates in addition to 1-2 pizzas. We settled on the house ricotta, kale Ceasar, grilled cabage, and grilled corn for starters. The ricotta was hands down our favorite - it was incredibly creamy and paired excellently with the bee pollen and honey. Truly a standout. We also really liked the kale salad - such a simple dish but incredibly tasty with the savory granola mixed in. For our pies, we got the red pie with stracciatella and the soppressata pizza. The red pie was very simple but the stracciatella added a nice creamy standout component. Reminded me of pizza back in Italy! The soppressata was also quite nice - a bit of a kick but nothing too crazy and the red pepper jelly added a bit of sweetness to balance. The crust wasn't too too thin but definitely not thick crust - it was substantial enough to uphold the toppings but thin enough to keep you going back for more. We may have over done it with the number of dishes we got as we were quite full by the end of the night, but everythign was so delicious that we don't regret a thing! Overall, our meal at Sally was a standout experience in Philly. I can easily see why it was selected as a top new restaurant in the city! From our serving staff to the safety of the restaurant to the extensive wine selection to the simple yet elegant and delicious meals, it was excellent from start to finish. This place is a whole viibeee! When you walk in, it's a small quaint place but definitely doesn't disappoint. I was so happily surprised by the music that was played because it was all types of music including my guyyy Burna Boy (extra points for that). The service was great! Our waiter was attentive, gave us great recommendations, and also picked up that on our girls night we were doing a lot of chatting so he was patient with us which we really appreciated. My two girlfriends ordered the HiC with mezcal and they loved it. We ordered the Kale Caesar Salad, Grilled Shrimp, and Soppressata Pizza. The Kale Caesar was soooo good, I honestly couldn't eaten that mountain of salad by myself if I really wanted to because it wasn't over dressed, plentyyyy of delicious parmesan, and there was granola in it which gave it a nice crunch (10/10). The grilled shrimp was okay, I didn't realize it still had the shell on it so I was in for a nice surprise when I bit into it haha. The flavor on the outside was good but once you take the shell off all those flavors kind of disappear but it was cooked perfectly. The pizza was an absolute chefs kissss ! It had a nice little spice to it but the pepper jam added some sweetness. The crust was charred and crispy and absolutely deliciousss! I probably could've eaten that entire pie myself too. Really solid meal. Our server was enthusiastic and the sommelier made great pairing suggestions. Started with the blue cheese and prosciutto appetizers, which were good. The star was the pizza- I like a good char on the crust and this delivered. The mushroom and egg topping was set off by a surprising, but delicious, stone ground mustard. We dined outside and the tables were filled with other happy diners. It's not far from the office either, so future post-work dinners for sure! read more

I'll be the first one to say that I didn't understand the hype, and why it was so challenging to get a reservation this week for my partner. But man WAS U WRONG. This place is awesome. There is not a single item on the menu that is bad. You can order anything and it will be delicious. I promise. We ordered charcoal shrimp, chicken liver mousse, sardine toast, fennel salami, the Japanese yam, clam and leek pizza, and sopressata pizza. All of it was fantastic. I didn't even really like the sardine toast but I have to give it up because I knew it was good. The wine selection is really great, and the desserts were solid. We sat outside in the rain and it was so peaceful and nice. They have a little picnic shelter setup. It was a fantastic night to be eating outside except I felt bad for D our server having to grab an umbrella. D gets her own shout out. Everything she suggested was bomb. She complemented our app choices, and led us to the wonder that was clam and leek pizza. Upon returning I will say you need the sopressata pizza. You also need the chicken liver mousse, and japanese yam. Grab the darker rose on the menu. Have a great night. I'll will return. read more

WOW - so psyched to have this new addition to the philly scene. Been here twice, and both times was blown away by the *incredible* food, friendly service, and interesting wines. The menu changes a lot but I've had a decent number of things so I'll talk about my favorites. Favorite small plates are the burrata with incredible high quality olive oil and poached tomatoes, fresh and delicious kale Caesar, and the charcoal grilled shrimp. The grilled sourdough was also delicious - but thats a tough thing to mess up. The most surprising dish to me was the sesame asparagus salad. I could have had three of them! As far as pizza, the sausage and onion was fantastic. These aren't typically toppings I enjoy, but all the ingredients were so great I couldn't get enough. The plain cheese (my normal) was also incredible. I dont think you can go wrong here with the food! The wine list changes constantly so probably not worth saying what I got, but I ordered a glass of dark rose (????) at the server's suggestion and it was the best wine I've had in a minute!
