It has been one year since this salon used PERMANENT, jet black dye on my hair after a color consultation where I was *explicitly* clear that I wanted only semi or demi permanent color on my brown hair. I will forever warn people of the disaster that occurred at Salon Revive. My experience with this salon and the owner's lack of effort to reimburse me for permanent color which will take years to correct/grow out is shameful. When I reviewed them in April 2020 I still thought they'd just used jet black demi permanent color. Nope! They obviously used permanent color and when the owner saw me weeks after my appointment she should have properly apologized and corrected their error by offering me more than bleach. Smh. Called earlier today and got a same day appointment with Carolyn for a wash and style on my sewn in weave. I was seated in her chair as soon as I arrived, the first few minutes were spent analyzing my hair and discussing my hair care routine, she recommended a deep conditioning treatment to care for my perimeter/leave out. Carolyn took her time and gave me the most thorough shampoo and deep cleansing. As they were doing my hair, I was told I would be up-charged an extra $60+ because my hair is so thick. Then the lady doing my hair seemed sweet but the way she attacked my hair with the comb leads me to believe she's never touched a black girl's hair before. My first visit with Lily was phenomenal she is very "hair care centric" she assesses your hair then provides you with tips to get on the path to hair health with honest advice on what works for your hair. I have never been able to wear my natural curls straight up but Lily brought them back to life with her cutting skills and a deep condition, my fro is back in action. I usually see Yodit when I go to Salon Revive, and love how she takes care of my hair, but she wasn't available the day I needed my hair done, and she said Asmi had an open slot. I was a little nervous about going to a different stylist-- I have dry, very thick, natural hair, and once I find someone who does it well I stick to them for years. I loved Asmi! A girl named Serena did most of my hair and she was great, then Gayla finished my hair. Galya cured my dry scalp problems, she's awesome. I've been going to her for a few years now, I followed her from the old location. I have natural hair and love to wear it straight (I noticed that many girls visiting the salon wear natural curls). I was in search of an Aveda Salon and Galya was referred because of her great blow outs. The 1st time she applied the scalp treatment with that little brush, I knew she was the one. Dandruff flakes, gone (big and small). Random scaby spots around the edges and on the scalp, gone. Religiously, even thru covid, we stick to the program, my scalp feels great and my hair is healthy. ‍ As an Aveda Salon, they're affordable for the area. I feel very comfortable when I visit and they're doing a great job with covid restrictions: temperature checks at the door; contact tracing; social distancing (they have a huge space upstairs); hand sanitizer everywhere; the stylists wear masks and face shields; and literally as soon as I'm out of the bowl she's there cleaning and wiping it down. And as always, everyone is super nice and helpful. Just make sure to get there early cause the parking sucks. read more

I went into Salon Revive with the lowest of expectations. I had a picture but wasn't married to it. I mostly just wanted to get out of the salon with MOST of my hair, and not ready to cry. So if you haven't noticed, I am afraid of Hair Salons like kids are afraid of the dentist. At least dentists don't lie to you, "Oh, this won't hurt." No, they tell you like it is. Root canals are not painless, and you probably will be in pain later. Getting my hair cut is like getting a root canal. I always leave in pain, and these scars have clearly not healed. So instead of sitting in the stylist's chair, I choose to cut my hair myself. Is it great? No. Does is hurt? No. Is it cheap? Yes. After telling my friend of my salon fears, she laughed and then teased me for cutting my own hair. Then said, "Enough! You are getting your hair done like an adult." Fine. FINE! And thus I booked a Shampoo, Cut, and Style using the Salon Revive website. The website was amazing. So easy. Almost too easy... To make the long story very short, the cut was great. The salon was clean, good smelling, and friendly. And what I liked best was my hair. Well, my hair and the price, which was the SAME and what I was quoted (never happened before). Oh, Hallelujah! Ive been a natural girl all my life and I never understood the important of keeping my hair trimmed until recently. In college I damaged my hair from dye and lack of care. Heron has low standards of cleanliness and the worst customer service. I was about to have my hair blow dried and I noticed the brush she was preparing to use was filled with gray hair!! Yuck!! I asked her to clean it and she removed the hair. But she did not wash it at all.. How disgusting. She hit an attitude when I asked her to wash it. Then she told me that my hair was thick making my price $10 extra . The prices are already high. I normally see Galya who I love. I visited this salon when I first moved to this area several years ago at their old location near U Street. I left when my stylist relocated and found my way back to this salon as my hair was missing the quality Aveda products offered here. I'm so glad I found Lilly, who is very sweet, professional and knowledgeable about natural hair care. The scheduling is always a breeze and I appreciate the newly updated modern space. My only con (which is a biggie) was a recent experience I had with Heran. My appointment was rescheduled so I had my hair blown out by Heran. I'm not one of her regular clients so I'm not sure if she's usually more friendly. She never spoke a word to me besides a hello when I arrived and she asked if I wanted my hair straightened flat or curly. This wouldn't usually bother me and I know everyone can have an off day. During my blow out, she burned the side of my face with the flat iron and I flinched (NOTICEABLY). I can't imagine how she didn't notice but she never acknowledged it and didn't apologize. The worst part is that the burn left a visible scar right on the side of my face!!!!! Unfortunately this experience leaves a sour taste in my mouth after I've had several positive visits here. This is my go-to place. Hiwot is my stylist. (See my pic? Hair by Hiwot.) I usually get a shampoo, blow dry, and flat-iron. My hair is natural; uncolored, about 10 inches long and thick with like 10 different curl and wave patterns, and I'm usually done in about an hour. It usually looks good (my only request is that it be curly so it will last longer), but the outcome is a bit inconsistent - sometimes I get compliments, and sometimes I'm embarrassed to admit that my hair was recently done later that afternoon...with partial blame on humidity and wind. She talks to you before she does anything, and offers lots of hair maintenance tips. You can feel that she is very concerned about the overall long-term health of your hair, perhaps even at the expense of style. Perhaps this is why she doesn't touch the roots...I have mixed feelings about this. I'll revisit this issue later. It's easy to schedule an appointment with their online system, there is never more than a 10 minute wait after you arrive, and everyone who works there is very nice and friendly. It's easy to reschedule an appointment if you call, and they try to accommodate special situations. I especially like that Hiwot has a number of elderly clients, and she really goes out of her way to show them the utmost respect and consideration, bringing them water, etc. I like the "shampoo women" too. I wish I could afford more generous tips. On rare occasions, I get roller sets, but for whatever reason, it's always complicated here and usually doesn't come out right, so I don't do it often. The lack of straight roots...is why I cheat on Revive with a Dominican salon every now and then to get the "relaxer experience," even though the styling can take you back to 1992. And, there's always lots of breakage and it takes a while to get my curl pattern back, neither of which I experience at Revive. For Dominican salons, I prefer Street Kutz in Hyattsville. From my limited knowledge of Spanish, they seem to be the nicest and most accepting of natural hair of the Dominican salons I have visited. In other ones, I always get that one mean lady talking s*** about natural hair in Spanish, and abusing your hair accordingly. That being said, after all that, I run back to Revive and Hiwot to have her bring my hair back to life a few times. It's a vicious cycle. I wouldn't recommend the "natural style," since I have been natural all my life and I am very particular about how I want my 'fro to hang. I tried it once here and I was held up in the bathroom for 30 mins, trying to make it look presentable before returning to work. It was faster, but definitely not an aesthetically-appealing improvement on my own wash, towel dry, apply leave-in conditioner, section and braid into 2-4 parts, and letting it air dry (or blow dry), at all. Getting there...I almost always take the metro. Parking is bad and not cheap in that area, but I arrived early the couple of times I drove, and parked on the street, a couple of blocks away. It's right on 9th and U, so it's a short block away from the 10th St exit of the U St-Cardozo Metro Station! Double win!!! During lunch time, you can catch a lunch special at some of the best Ethiopian restaurants in the city, along with Busboys, Caribbean Restaurants, etc. read more

Sooooo, I wanted to get my hair cut. Unfortunately, I do not have a salon that I frequent on a regular basis. Im a salon hopper. lol. I stumbled upon Salon Revive on yelp, read the reviews and literally booked an appointment the next day for Hiwot. After driving around U St for 15 minutes like an IDIOT, I called the salon and they informed me of the complimentary lot across the street from them. (Please be advised this lot is tiny with limited spots...approx 20 total) I went on a Thursday, waited only about 10 minutes and Hiwot greeted and escorted me to the shampoo area. I don't know the chicks name who washed my hair but she did a great job. I told her not to be timid because I was not tender headed. Afterward, I described the cut I wanted to Hiwot. Something in between a Victoria Beckham/Katie Holmes inverted bob with bangs. She proceeded to cut my hair while it was wet which concerned me. My hair is has very tight curls and I did not think she would be able to perform an accurate cut if the hair wasn't straight. She saw the look on my face and told me not to worry. She was very confident and definitely worked like she knew what she was doing. To my surprise it was a great cut once she blew it and flat ironed it. Only thing she did after that was use a razor-like utensil to even it up and shave off fly ends. I was pleased with the cut and her time. She only took about an hour and 15 minutes which is what Im used to with my stylist in Atlanta. Hiwot was great. Total for wash, blow, fat iron and cut - $65. But my hair is thicker than most so yours may be cheaper. :) read more

This salon is such a relief. I have 4C hair and I'm always nervous when it comes to trying a new beautician. I was relieved when I saw that a majority of the stylist had natural hair AND my beautician didn't have that "oh damn" look on her face when I took my hat off. She made me feel so comfortable. I knew I was home. After washing and conditioning, she took her time detangling my hair..being careful not to pull, snag, or snap my hair. Magical. Lol I could go on and on. It is a bit pricey but definitely worth it. The location of the salon is in an awkward busy location and there is no dedicated parking...unless you get lucky and are able to snag one of the curb spots. I came in desperate need for a trim, and Heran did a beautiful job trimming my hair in its natural state! I also got a wash and go done which looked great at the time, however the styling products used didn't have as much hold as I would have liked for my 4A hair (but they felt very moisturizing). This cost $100, which I think is reasonable for DC. I will definitely be back for my next trim and will try a different style, maybe a flexi rod set! If you have 4B/4C hair, this salon is NOT for you. I am completely devastated. I scheduled an appointment with Meron for a simple wash and flat iron. I had a banquet in two days and wanted to play with a new style for that evening. I sat down in her chair and explicitly informed her about my past experience with heat damage some years ago and questioned the temperature of the flat iron. In so many words, Meron told me that she's had 13 years of experience doing hair and that I'm in good hands. My 4C hair is completely fried, damaged, limp, and lifeless. My boyfriend and I both weren't happy with how dead my hair looked and I decided to wash it out and do a twist out so I would be natural me at this important event. My hair refused to return to its natural kinky state. I washed 3 times. Conditioned. Apple cider vinegar and beer. Mediated. Spoke and reasoned with God. Then cried like a baby. I flew all the way to New Orleans for the event and was unable to attend because my hair was an unacceptable, burned, mess. By unacceptable, I mean a cross between Mr. Glass (Unbreakable film) meets Michael Jackson Pepsi commercial travesty. After the many washes, it smelled like burnt hair. I knew that for a second time, I had been burned. My hair looks like it's been permed; I've been natural for almost 10 years. I'm not sure if I will need to cut my hair off, again, but I for sure will never go back to this salon, let alone let anyone named Meron touch my hair ever again. I promised to turn away anyone who is interested in this salon. They are not savvy in hair textures outside of their own. There are multiple reviews on this salon in regards to heat damage. If you've ignored the others because of the many great reviews, do no be fooled and ignore this one. Please look elsewhere. One Week Updated information: I had informed the salon's owner of what happened and she scheduled me for a treatment to restore my in-restorable damaged hair. Meron apologized to me for my damaged hair after asking me "why didn't you tell me the iron was too hot?", to which I reminded her of her 13 years of experience she had assured me of having. This is the reason for my rating. I was not charged for the treatment, but there was nothing they could do to bring my limp hair back to life. In a matter of one week, I've had to cut off all my hair to start anew. I'd suggest to proceed with caution and always question the heat of the iron. Simply the best salon for women of color. Everything here is amazing. The only person in the world I let cut my hair is Yodit. She is amazing, I cannot say enough about her. I don't even live in dc anymore but every time I am back I make sure to make an appointment with her. She has been helping me fix my dry and damaged hair and every cut she gives me is truly perfect. Only giving three starts because the salon was extremely clean and they are taking the COVID precautions very seriously. I paid $85 for a trim and blow dry. The woman who washed my hair drenched the back of my shirt. Literally soaked. She started brushing my hair with a very small brush that was pulling my hair. She did not appear to be confident when cutting my hair and I was nervous the entire time. She walked away from me in the chair a few times with my hair dripping wet. She began drying my hair with cool air and my hair was getting so frizzy. Thankfully the owner took over and did a more proper blow out. I asked for light layers in the front and the stylist did a hard chop then some light layers below it. It is uneven and looks off. I am also finding longer strands that were missed during the cut that I am cutting myself. For $85 I would have expected a knowledgeable and experienced stylist. I discovered Salon Revive when I went on a search for a shop that focused on hair care and knew how to work with curly hair. I grew up going to black salons and getting relaxers. With the natural hair movement, I just stopped going to salons all together. One day I realized the hair in the center of my head had broken off to about 3 inches. This sent me on my search. Upon entering you are walked to the back to hang your coat and put in a black robe. My first thought... "Oh this is fancy." The stylists absolutely focus on hair care and provide a specific treatment for your hair from the aveda line. I've been going to this salon for almost a year now and they are the only ones I have trusted to color my hair. I have seen coloring horror stories, but I am happy to report that it did not change my curl pattern. I really think this a great salon. The only drawback for me is the price. I come to Salon Revive once in a blue moon to get my natural hair washed, blow dried and flat-ironed (cut's as well because I dont trust myself, lol). Galya does my hair and does a great job everytime. She also cut the rest of my relaxed ends after a year and 5 months of transitioning in May 2017. My only issue is the price, within 6 months in 2017 they increased their rate by $10. What used to cost me $60 is now $70, if I need a trim thats $80, and treatments which are always pushed and your talking about $100 before you add any products you may be interested in purchasing. Anyway, I like the salon and Galya's work but I am considering looking for another salon, its getting too expensive but since I only go 1-4 times a year Im also considering to tough it out. lol. Im cheap when it comes to may hair. I do my own twist-outs and they come out looking great - always get compliments :) So I guess Im still on the fence for now... read more

I've reviewed Salon Revive before but I have to update! I love the way my hair feels after a visit here. It's a great salon experience - clean, welcoming (and beautiful) staff, and the products they use are, well, expensive. Also I've never had a problem with timeliness. I see Lily for my short natural hair cuts and color, and she is very sweet. She seems to care about the health of my hair, and makes sure she is ginger while cutting and styling. She also LISTENS when I tell her what I want! I recommend trying Salon Revive if you have short natural hair. It is pricey, but I reckon I'm paying for the services and the experience. I called THREE times to verify the appointment time and price for my daughter's hair. I usually do her hair and have experience with her long thick hair scaring stylist away. All three times I let them know my daughter's hair was very thick and very long. They told me the starting price for a wash, condition, blowdry, trim and cornrow style was $90 and that for thick and long hair that could be increased to $115. I agreed, even though that was quite expensive for a five year old's hair. Once we arrived at the salon, they said a trim alone was $90 and that her hair would cost $205 in total. I was extremely disappointed. I asked to speak with whom I spoke to on the phone and they said she was not in. They assured she would call me the next day, which she did not. This is a deceitful salon. Luckily I found a stylist the same night that specialized in children's hair. She charged $65 and was so patient and great with my daughter's hair. I am so happy we walked out of this salon. Dishonesty is never a way to gain customers. read more

This visit was one of the worst in my experience . I went to Yodit, I believe she is the owner, I usually go to Hewit who is out with a family emergency. I have all natural hair, this visit started off well with the assistant deep conditioning and detangling my hair. When Yodit did my hair, she was yanking through my hair with a tiny comb, to the point where I told her if you yank less my hair won't break, I have never seen a natural stylist tug and roughly comb hair this way which leads to split ends... I was so uncomfortable and untrusting of the process, I opted for her to flat iron my hair on extremely low heat, this whole process took her about 15 minutes ( after being seated in Yodel's chair) for $110 ( with deep condition, for barely decent service)!!!!
