EDITED: THEY. TOOK. MY. EDGES. While my hair was beautiful for the few days after I left the salon, when I went to wash it a few weeks later, my edges DID NOT REVERT to their curls. They are now straight, thin, patchy and breaking. I have been natural for 6 years and my edges have only flourished since. This is devastating and not cute. I can no longer in good conscience recommend this salon. -------------------------------------- Just left the salon for a blowout and all I can say is: I. LOVE. MY. HAIR! As a girl with thick coarse natural hair, I am always anxious about finding a salon that will handle my texture with care but also give a sleek, polished blowout that will last. If you are the same, look no further! Meron washed, trimmed, blew out and feathered my hair. The result was a silky smooth style that has my hair looking full and healthy! She had me in and out in under two hours (efficient but not rushed). This was a little pricey compared to other salons ($65 for blowout + $10 for discretionary thick hair charge + $10 for trim + tip), but I find that you get what you pay for. A Black Bre Van Decamp or Charlotte York is not going to want to look like a punk rocker. This salon had the potential in making my DC trip memorable. I could have looked like a DC IT Girl. Instead this visit devastated my mood and all my plans for the day. I had to cancel brunch plans to return to the hotel and fix what I paid $90 for a professional to do. Wasted my limited time in the city. I've already given the stylist two hours of my vacation to create this monstrosity of regret, I couldn't afford more. There was a hair dresser with the exact hair I wanted. How her example got interpreted into a poodle hat concept, I have no idea. It was just a wash and style. Not even a cut or chemicals. If you can't slay this, I can't trust with anything more complicated. Even my boyfriend who always says I look pretty said, "Im sorry babe. I dont like it." It's trendy, doesn't fit my classic personality, and It doesn't fit my work's standard of dress policy. Look at the style of the customer for cues of how she composes herself. Often I have left hair salons disappointed or needing to fix what I paid the professional to do. I always attributed most of these dreadful experiences to living in a rural, non-diverse locations. I've been coming to Salon Revive for over a year now and my hair has transformed. The products and hair care provided here is top notch. I'm a black women with natural hair (no perm). My hair has grown a considerable amount since seeing Heran. I usually get the wash with a deep treatment. The hair washers are usually really good. It's like a mini head massage and shampoo wrapped in one. I get my hair trimmed every two months which has helped with improving the health of my hair. Heran is not scissor happy. I love hat they don't use a lot of heat on your hair. I went to Lily once when Heran was out and I just say Lily is a master at hair cutting. I was really impressed with the trim she gave me. The price here is pretty steep but it's worth it. read more

Let me preface this review by saying that I have been a client at Salon Revive since 2008 and have been referring everyone I know to the salon -- including my 3 sisters. However, my last visit left me shocked and somewhat outraged. I came in for face-framing highlights and since Yodit (the only stylist I typically see) was booked out until June, I was seen by Hiwot. Now, the highlights themselves turned out beautifully. The problem arose when I went to the counter to pay. The receptionist rang up my total to $168. Now, the website says face-framing highlights run $70 and I did buy a bottle of confixor gel (another $18). But $168?! I've never paid that much for highlights with Yodit. So, I asked to see the screen with my running total and lo and behold I was being charged not only for "partial highlights," which are $30 more than the face-framing variety, but there was also a $40 charge for a "curly style." NEVER, in the 5 years I have been a patron at Salon Revive have I EVER been charged for "curly styling"-- especially when all that was done to my hair was a rake through with Paul Mitchell pomade (while I was still over the shampoo bowl, mind you) and 20 minutes under a dryer (no styling in sections, no defining of curls, NOTHING). The styling was so bad and my hair so dry that I went home, washed it out and redid it myself. I asked one of my sisters who has recently been to the salon for two coloring services if she had ever been charged this "curly styling" fee and she had never seen it either. So, I am completely baffled and disappointed because I should have been informed that I would incur an extra fee for "curly styling." I was a loyal customer through my college years and this is still the only salon I give my business to, despite having relocated to Tennessee for graduate school. This is bad business practice and one simply cannot run a salon without informing your clientele with an updated price list-- especially when you are dealing with STUDENTS on a tight budget. So I am HIGHLY disappointed and am not sure if I would be willing to return to the salon, let alone refer anyone else. I would like my $40 refunded. read more

I was able to book Lily online and have my hair done that same day. I have thick natural hair and had not trimmed it in over a year. I had major split ins and really dry hair. Needless to say, my hair was in bad shape. Lily talked me through how much should be cut off and recommended a deep conditioning treatment to rehydrate my hair. I walked out a new woman. My appointment at Salon Revive was actually six months ago. It ended with me weeping down U Street, missing my last hair stylist. As an aside, for those of you who find yourselves in London, Laurel at Power Cutz in Holborn is a genius! And I suppose that she has spoiled me into believing that all stylists know what they are doing and have your best interests at heart. Not so. Eventually I went back to London to sort out the hot mess that was created at Salon Revive. So, I got there and asked for a colour (goldy) and cut on my natural hair. The shape was in a kind of over grown faux hawk and the ends were the colour I wanted. I got the feeling that we were both on the same page, and so sat back and waited for the dye job to work. After around 15 minutes, I noticed that my hair was turning a dark brown colour. When I pointed this out, I was told that it would get lighter when it was washed out. Again. Not so. So once it was agreed that it was not the right colour, they decided that highlights were the way to go. At this point, I should have focussed on the image of a dodgy Brazilian footballer that was in my mind, and got up and left, but again, I believed that stylists know what they are doing. What happens when you highlight short natural hair? You end up looking like a dodgy Brazilian footballer, or even just a dodgy football. Poor! As if this wasn't enough, the initial cut was just as disappointing and ended up looking like a cross between the Fresh Prince and my Ugandan aunty. At this point, she could see my trembling lip and asked whether I liked it? Umm, no. She then decided there was not much else she could do for me so walked away. Eventually Vonetta came over and was very sweet asking what was wrong, but by then there wasn't too much more she could do to fix it but cut it all off. She took the price of the cut off the bill but in the end, I still paid $180 to walk out, weeping, bald, with little blonde patches around my head, and terrified of trying another salon in DC but aware that I can't keep flying back to London! read more

My plan was to write this review 3 weeks ago after my first experience but life has gotten away from me. I'm glad I didn't because my rating has changed significantly. Originally it would have been a 4 star rating. I am transitioning and since I'm not a big chop girl I have simply getting flat irons once a week since July of last year. 1 year since my last relaxer I felt like it tie to stop straightening and rock my au naturale well of course I have no curl pattern. A friend of mine who has been natural for years suggested seeing Yodit so she can help me find a solution. When I called for my appointment I was informed Yodit only works 2 days a week, Sunday & Wednesday. This was after I said I wanted an appt with Yodit on a Tuesday. You would think they would have told me that first but that would be too much like right. She had no open for 3 weeks so I took her first available appt and wasn't already weary of having to wait so long for an appt. Arrived at the salon was greeted and showed around since it was my first time. Only had to wait about 10 minutes which was refreshing. Meet Yodit and explained my issues to her. After suggesting a wash and deep condition to better understand my lack of curl she spent about 10 minutes explaining to me what she thought was happening. She was very knowledgeable and friendly and I appreciated her advice until she suggested I do the big chop. After 12 months of dealing with this to avoid the big chop? Not an option. Next..... Then she suggested cutting an inch off and for me to avoid curling/heat for 2 weeks. I agreed to avoiding heat after she showed me how to pin curl. I left the salon loving my hair so much that I agreed to let her trim it next appointment. Made my next appointment for 2 weeks out before I left the salon but of course, duty called and I had to reschedule. My issue happened when trying to reschedule today and I was told I couldn't get an appt until the middle/end of April. Now at this point I haven't curled my hair for 2 weeks and it is big and unattractive but I'm dealing for the sake of healthy hair but what am I supposed to do for the next month? I tried explaining this to the receptionist but she could care less. Basically told me Yodit works 2 days a week so I don't know what you expect. Well I expect the receptionist of a venue I support with my hard earned money to be alittle more supportive and a lot less rude. I told the girl that there was no way I could wait a month and I would have to find a new hair salon she simply said "Okay". Now yes I had my heart set on Yodit but the receptionist didn't even suggest seeing a different stylist or try to work with me. I assumed that meant they didn't care about my money therefore I won't give it to them. I did hear that Yodit works at another salon the other days of the week so I may try to track her down there. Let me start off by saying I'm EXTREMELY picky about my hair and I have no relaxer so I'm used to having my roots pressed and hair flat ironed... I also should add that I'm from Atlanta where hair is just... different. Ok so I walked in last night and again the receptionist was rather spaced out. As a matter of fact I stood at the desk for about 3-5 minutes before she realized "oh... you need to check in?" I reply, "yes". After I give her my name she says that Merin (my stylist) will be with me shortly. I was about 10 minutes early so I didn't mind the wait. After about 20 minutes or so I was taken back to her chair. The very first thing she did was pull out a tub of relaxer! I immediately told her that I was natural and that relaxer (or lots of product) would not be needed. She then proceeds to ask me if I'm "sure" I don't have a relaxer. (I'm thinking to myself... well ummm yeah!) She then asks, well what do you need? I explain I need a shampoo, blowdry, & flat iron/curl. Ok easy enough... My shampoo was so so (I have dry scalp and my previous stylist used Aveda products - which was my main reason for choosing this salon). I expected her at the very least get my scalp clean...she didn't. The whole thing took 5 minutes (I don't even know if she conditioned it). After that Merin blowdry(ied?) my hair and attempted to flat iron it. It looked ok however my roots are still puffy. All in all... $45 was spent on the convenience of someone doing what I could have done myself. Now the check out process was worse than the check in... the receptionist (in all her clueless glory) goes "Nicole, you're all set!" Now forgive me of my northern ignorance but when someone tells you at a checkout desk you're "all set" that typically means... thank you come again, right? I then ask, "so it was free? or what's my total?" She says, "OH!! $45..." I give her a $100 bill... she doesn't give me change but instead says "is this for Merin or..." By this point I'm annoyed by the whole process and I say to her..."neither.. it's for me." She hands me my change with a confused look on her face. I walk out...shaking my head all the way. Now, maybe my Southern hospitality roots are making me ignorant to the Northern way of life but... *frown* I don't THINK this receptionist was properly trained (or she just doesn't give a dern). Prices: If you don't mind paying exorbitant prices for hair care, this might be the salon for you. I've lived in urban areas like Chicago and Atlanta, and I've never had a problem finding quality hair care at an affordable rate. I'm African-American and visited Salon Revive after reading the Yelp reviews expecting impeccable service at a decent price. Maybe the prices are decent relative to the DC area, but I was shocked when I saw my final bill. $85 for color and $40 for a good conditioner on top of $65 for a shampoo, blow dry and trim. Maybe I've been spoiled with my previous stylists, but I would have appreciated at least knowing what I would have to pay before relinquishing my hair (and my pocketbook!) to the stylist. By the way, I asked the receptionist for a price list, and they didn't have one. How convenient. Stylist: My appointment was with Vonetta. She's extremely friendly and sociable, but she was pretty rough with my hair. I was pleased with the final outcome, but I've experienced much better hair care in the past. Again, I didn't feel that the service justified the cost. Parking: People rave about the free parking across the street, but the lot is extremely tight and the parking attendant spoke limited English, so I couldn't really understand his directions. As a result, it was really hard to get out of the lot, which was extremely frustrating. Park on the street if you can. Overall: I won't be back. Can't afford it, but even if I could, I feel my money would be better spent at another salon. read more

When I arrived at Salon Revive for my first visit and was surrounded by Natural Hair sisters, I felt at home. I was avoiding the salon b/c the prices are not to my liking, but I have had multiple bad experiences at Black Hair Salons that claim to do natural hair and obviously had no idea what they were doing so I bit the bullet and gave in. I came in for a blow out and trim b/c everyone says the best trim is done on straightened hair, but I didnt really want to straighten my hair...at all. I work out almost daily and I know my sweat issues would ruin the blow out...and I love my curly hair as is. I told my stylist, Galya, this and she immediately made my day by telling me that if I never wore my hair straight, it was not necessary to straighten it for a trim. So I had a wash, trim, and wash & go style. My hair feels so healthy and I'm definitely going to stop avoiding trims. HOWEVER, I only gave the salon 3 stars b/c I can't get past the price. I know I was charged the same price I was quoted for the blow out which is crazy. And unfortunately, when I got home, I noticed many tiny flakes in my hair from the product that was used on my hair so I have to re-wash it. :( My hunt continues for a salon that does not overcharge Natural Hair clients for a simple deep condition and trim...but until I find one, Salon Revive will do. Side note: Coming from Arlington, I really didnt want a DC salon b/c I hate parking in DC, but there was plenty of parking on the Saturday afternoon that I went. I parked one block over where there were no meters. Side note II: The salon accepts debit/credit cards, but does not permit clients to add a tip to the total...so bring cash! read more

Eventhough it was raining out, I just HAD to get my hair done. The appointment I had at the Aveda Institute was cancelled. (They called me 1-hour prior to the appointment and cancelled on ME if you are wondering.) But I knew I just HAD to get something done to my hair before birds started building their nests in my growing fro. So I called Salon Revive. They could take me at noon. I hopped on the subway and started my afternoon of beauty. Althea and Tirena were tag teaming me that day. Tirena gave me the best shampoo ever. Not with her fingernails, but with the fleshy part of the finger tips, ooooooh, she got every hectare of scalp soapy sudsy clean. Mmmm, mmmmm, mmmm. Then she applied some kind of protein boost and put me under a steam hood. Oh, nice. Finally, Tirena set out on the voyage to blow drying. Ahhh. Comfort. I did have a couple of those "too close to the scalp" blasts of hot air but that area probably needed it. Trust me. After the blow out, I went over to Althea, the stylist. She took the scissors and rid my now silky strands of their dry brittle ends. Then, the flat ironing process started. Althea is magical and clinical with those 450° ceramic planks. During the flat ironing, she inquired about my eyebrows. If you're wondering, no, she didn't ask if two springtime caterpillars had crawled up onto my forehead to mate. She asked who does my eyebrows. In the end, she was the one to artfully craft my new springtime look. It did take a few days for the pink color to go away. But eventually it did. Et voilà! My new spring look. They took my coat. They offered me water, magazines, a smock. The bathroom is nice and clean. The decor is tranquil and soothing. The music is calming. Not urban R & B or bad boy hip hop. And there was none of that raunchy salon talk that some shops can be known for. AND...they got me in and out in about 2.5 hours. Wow. Oh, the payment. wwwwwowwwwww. Not sustainable for a weekly or even every-other weekly visit. But not the size of the federal deficit, either. The whole experience was as good as it gets for a DC hair salon. I highly recommend Salon Revive, Althea, and Tirena. I will absolutely return to the business. read more

I am so disappointed because I've grown to fall in love with the Aveda concept. I only go there for color treating, not for weekly maintenance and I have gone to the salon 3 times over the course of 2 years. Just a disclaimer: I have fine and natural hair.... The first time I went I was completely satisfied. I got color and cut by a guy (forgot his name) who simply knew what he was doing. The second time I went I was colored by (Hiwot) and the color was great. I had gotten my hair cut into a bob about 2 months before and I asked her to cut my ends to reserve my style/cut and once I got to the register I was charge $60 for a cut..... I also asked for face-framing highlights... she took it upon herself to give my foil highlights and charged me for it. So initially I was pissed because I was spending a lot more money then intended but I didnt mind because I really liked my hair. About a month ago I went back to get my hair re-colored. I had red hair but over the summer the color had grown out so much so I went to get a color retouch. I was privy to the fact that I may not get the same color and was open to getting a different shade of color.... Hiwot said that the color was possible to achieve but it wasnt..... when she washed the color out it looked crazy. So she demanded that I get highlights to balance the two colors.... I told her I was not paying for highlights because I was trying to get my hair stronger.. She went to the back and I thought she was getting more color to dye my hair over..but it was bleach and I was pissed. After the color ordeal I was just ready to go... when I got to the front desk to pay... my total was $120. She charged me $80 for the color (website says $60) and $40 to run a flat iron through my hair..... Again, my hair is very fine and about shoulder length..It is beyond manageable so im not sure why I paid so much for a terrible color job and a half-done flat iron. The lighting in the salon is not that great so i didnt realize my hair was 3 different colors until i got home. My hair looked terrible! The color was awful. The ends were one color, the roots were another and the mid section was an extremely light color. Im disgusted and I will never go back.... After months and months of stalking the reviews I finally did it - I went to see the Yelp Famous Hiwot at Salon Revive. Let me begin by stating how much I hate the whole hair salon thing. I hate having my time wasted while sitting among 10 other women with my exact same appointment time. I hate watching the stylist sit down and eat or take a call in front of me or better yet leaving the shop to run an errand. I hate having to deal with fluctuating prices depending on the mood of the stylist. I hate having to tune out other people's cell phone conversations. I am happy to report this was not the salon of my nightmares. There were no random people just hanging around, no club music blaring and thankfully nobody came through selling "designer" bags or chicken dinners. There were no unattended children running amok. It was exactly what it was supposed to be relaxing, clean and efficient. Parking: Some reviewers were annoyed about the parking lot, but considering I pulled right in I had no issue. It's a small lot but if there is a spot go for it. It's $5 and it is what it is. You don't have to worry about meters. Reception: The receptionist was friendly and informative. I arrived early but within 5 mins was taken back and shown the cape drawer. I got my cape and returned to the waiting area and not even 5 mins later I was introduced to Hiwot and seated at her station. Did I mention that I arrived early? Shampoo/Blowdry:Tseday was awesome. She did a great job washing and blowing my hair out. She was thorough and worked quickly. Hiwot: She was great. Friendly, informative and she listened to what I asked for. She worked quickly and explained what she was doing at each step. She gave me a cute cut and had me in and out in 75 minutes! The time alone is reason for me to return. How have I not reviewed MY salon yet? Yep, my salon! As a black woman, hair care is like top 3 in my must-haves in life. When I was thinking about going natural I asked all kinds of people for their stylist's info. I wasn't sold until someone told me to check out Salon Revive. What I love most about Salon Revive is the professional atmosphere. Most black salons are.... well not up to par. But I always feel welcomed and well taken care of. I go to Hiwot, who is the owner and one of the nicest people I know. She is natural as well and has a HUGE appreciation for it. (You know sometimes they won't even DO your hair if you're natural). She is well knowledgable about all types of hair. Her prices are a bit high for me, but my friends say she's fair for DC. I recently had color done and LOVE it. Again, $175 was pricey, but I love it. I've been twice, so now I feel like I can write an accurate review of Hiwot's service. I don't let many people cut my hair, but I feel good about Hiwot's care. Here's the lowdown on both of my experiences. Appointment making: The first time, I made my appointment online at 3 or 4 in the morning. The second time, I had to call to make an appointment because they have a new online system for which I wasn't registered (and you have to call to register). Getting there: I've heard people complain about the small parking lot, but I take the Metro to U Street-Cardozo (10th Street exit), and it's one short block and a half walk away. Reception: The first time I went, there was a...shall we say brisk lady at the desk; nothing personable about her--she just checked me in and got the job done. The second time, the lady at reception greeted me with a smile, checked me in, and directed me to sit and be comfortable. Meeting Hiwot: Both times, she was extremely pleasant, talked to me about my hair's needs, and her manner eased my nervousness about scissors coming close to my hair. Each time, my hair was washed by an assistant, and this last time, I got a deep conditioning treatment, during which they put you under a steamer after applying conditioner. I've heard debates on whether or not steamers make a difference in conditioning, but after my experience, I'm on Team Steam! The steam treatment itself was somewhat unpleasant because the excess water ran down my face constantly, and the steam was extremely hot on my scalp where my hair is thinner, but I'd endure it again for its benefits. The first time, the assistant blow dried my hair. This time, after my treatment, Hiwot rinsed out my conditioner and blow dried my hair. Then she cut it and flat ironed it. I'm black, I have very thin and coarse hair, and I don't use a relaxer. I normally wear my hair curly, and that's the best option because of its thinness. In the past when stylists have straightened and curled my hair, it was a nightmare--they made me look like I was wearing a helmet! However, Hiwot manages to flat iron and curl it, AND give my hair body so it doesn't look like a helmet made of thread. Really. Price: My first visit, I didn't get a deep conditioning treatment, so it was $60. The second time, with the treatment, it was $100. Frankly, I think $40 is a bit steep for a treatment where they're using the same conditioner they'd normally use, and they're not actively handling the client's hair. Bathroom: I wish the bathroom were a bit cleaner. It's understandable that hair is everywhere in a salon; however, the sink and toilet should always be spotless. As a relative germaphobe, I'm not completely put off by the bathroom, but it could be improved. Accessibility: A note for people needing wheelchair access. Yelp says the salon is accessible, but to get inside the salon, there's a large step at the door. I have arthritis and it's a bit of a pain. Once inside, the main area is on one level, and there are two short steps to the sinks, hooded dryer area, bathroom, coat closet, and another stylist area. If you think you'll be fine with the step at the door, when you make an appointment, it would be good to ask where in the salon your services will take place. So, four stars for the wonderful haircare and customer service, and minus one star for the overpriced conditioning treatment and the hairy bathroom. read more

The Pros - *Vonetta does a great job on my hair.I haven't found more than one person in the DMV that can style my hair correctly - or to my liking. I am from Detriot MI, and the haircare/style that I am used has been hard to match. So, I am an extremely picky client. You may have noticed that I also reviewed another salon (Robert Lewis), I still agree with the review, but Salon Revive is about 35 minutes closer and that makes a huge difference. I recommend Vonetta, if you can get an appointment, she is in HIGH demand. *The salon is super easy to locate and metro accessible (yellow/green line U Street). There is also free parking across the street -- . I was once ordered to tip the parking attendant -- he did nothing to deserve the tip. But I still park there occasionally. *Aveda products are AWESOME - my hair responds very well to the shampoo/conditioners that are offered. The 1 Con - *Salon Revive has an online booking system that never seems to be updated. It will show an available appointment time for a stylist and then a day later I will receive an email letting me know that my appointment wasn't accepted. If the salon is going to have an online booking system update it on the regular -- otherwise take it off the site. It is never updated and all my appointments -- every single time have been rejected. It's annoying - period. read more

I have absolutely NO complaints. Oh how I love Hiwot; let me count the ways!! One, I was in and out this salon in one hour! Two, the hair wash was AMAZING!! Three, my hair is natural and kinky (like straight out of Africa kinky...lol!) and I went for a blow dry and press...she was awesome with her advice and used quality Aveda products! Four, she was VERY gentle; as I said my hair is very kinky but she made sure not to pull and break my hair. I went to Salon Revive on Tuesday (today is Friday) to get my hair cut. My hair was severely damaged and broken off due to frequent visits to a Dominican salon and the high heat. As any African-American woman knows it's HELL finding a salon that can both style and treat our hair. So I metro'd over to the salon and walked into Revive without an appointment and not knowing exactly what to expect but hoping for the best. I was hoping to get Vonetta, Hiwot, or Yodit, since I heard such rave reviews from them but I got Ayesha and THANK GOD I DID! Ayesha first did a long consultation and concluded what I already knew, my hair was a HOT mess and I should probably just start all over again. She took so much time and precision to cut my hair I was amazed! She chopped off 6+ inches and just kept cutting away but checked with me every step of the way. I felt like was a celebrity client, getting the five star treatment. She relaxed and shampooed my hair herself and gave me a scalp massage. My hair feels like it is back to its pre-Dominican burn out texture thanks to the Aveda products. I can't describe in words how much I love the cut! I felt like she gave me a customized super short cut that I can style a hundred different ways (amazing since the longest part of my hair is about 3inches). I feel like this is how my hair should have always been. I told her that I've never had short hair before and I needed a low maintenance cut and she listened. I can just wrap it at night, fluff it in the morning and keep it popping. And in just three days I've gotten more compliments on my hair from people than I have in the past year! I needed to get my hair flat ironed while in DC for work. Unfortunately for me, I waited until the last minute to make an appointment. Fortunately for my hair, Salon Revive was more than willing to accommodate me. I'm familiar with a few salons having lived in the DC area for many years. However, I never found one that I was impressed enough to go back to. That is, until today when I discovered Salon Revive. They took me as a same day appointment at 3:30 in the afternoon. I knew this was going to be a great experience. My appointment was with Althea. She was amazing! Immediately took the time to learn about my hair cares needs and made recommendations on how to care for it going forward. What I appreciated most was how comfortable Althea made me feel while trimming my hair. I am a total wimp when it comes to hair trimming. Probably because I've only experienced stylists that seem to get a rise out of cutting my hair vice trimming it. That said, I was terrified at the idea of someone I wasn't familiar with trimming my hair. All I can say is that I wish I still lived in DC so that I could visit Salon Revive on a regular basis. My hair never looked or felt better. It was shiny, luxurious and FULL of body. I paid $85.00 for a wash, protein/moisture treatment, blow dry and style. It was worth EVERY penny! They subsidize parking in the lot across the street. You pay $5, and the pay $5. There is also metered parking along 9th St and two hour parking along T and 8th streets. time to confess, I don't do ANYTHING to my hair. My mother wasn't a hair person, my sister isn't a hair person and neither am I. I want it to look nice and need little effort. Knowing that I'm not going to do my hair means I spend a lot of time at salons. After a few uneven blowouts at a local chain I took to yelp and found salvation at Salon Revive. It's super easy to get to, 2 or 3 blocks from the metro, the staff is awesome, I'm out in an hour and (here's the best part) I don't have to give them my unborn child upon check out. Pricey, but great place to come to get your hair done if you have natural hair (AA's/black folks). Good salons that cater to black hair are not easy to find and I polled my friends and did some googling and stumbled upon this place. Hiwot came at recommendation (she is the owner) and she is really good. I've been coming here for a few years now, and she's the only one i let blowdry or cut/trim my hair. My hair's health is 1000% better than before I started coming here, and they do treatments (steam) as well as low heat blowdry your hair prior to trimming. I read a lot of positive reviews on Yelp for Salon Revive, so I decided to check the place out for myself this weekend. I tried making an appointment with Hiwot or Vonetta since several reviewers mentioned them specifically, but they were both completely booked on Saturday, so I made an appointment with Meron instead. I was a bit apprehensive about getting my hair done by Meron, but after confirming with the receptionist that Meron knew how to do African American natural hair, I set out for my trip to the salon. I arrived at Salon Revive about ten minutes before my appointment. The salon was busy but not crowded. I was immediately greeted with a warm smile from the receptionist. I checked in with her and then she walked me to the back of the salon where she hung up my coat and told me where to get a smock to cover my clothes. I then took a seat up front and surveyed the Aveda products which lined the wall and relaxed to the sound of soul/r&b music which was playing at just the right volume. Meron came to get me a few minutes after I sat down and she greeted me by name and with a friendly smile, which immediately put me at ease. First Meron took me to her station (which was in the back of the salon) and I explained to her what I wanted to have done. Then, she walked me over to the sink where one of the Shampoo Assistants washed my hair, all the while asking me if the water was too hot/cold and if she was massaging my head too hard. After the shampoo, I was given a conditioning treatment, which required me to sit under the steam hair dryer. About fifteen minutes later the Assistant washed the conditioner out of my hair and blow-dried it. She kept the blow dryer on a low setting, which made the experience painless. This was in stark contrast to my experience at Dominican salons, where the stylists blow dry your hair on a high heat setting and put the blow dryer close to your scalp so your hair is bone straight. My hair still had body in it after it was blow dried, which I loved. Meron did a nice job trimming my ends and flat ironing my hair and I loved the end product. Paying was super easy since the salon accepts credit cards. I charged the tip to my credit card and the receptionist gave me the amount in cash so I could personally hand the amount to my stylist. I thought this was a nice touch. So far I'm impressed with Salon Revive and I plan on being a repeat client! read more

I scheduled a 1:30 appointment with Yodit using Salon Revive's online system, and I checked in around 1:33. I sat there for about ten minutes, at which point someone came over and brought me a glass of water, which I really appreciated, but then I proceeded to sit there for another hour. Around 2:15, I started feeling upset, but the receptionist was nowhere to be found, and when I saw her and approached her around 2:35 to tell her I'd been waiting over an hour, she just stared at me blankly. I then let her know I was going to leave. My time is important to me, and I really didn't appreciate that Salon Revive doesn't share that consideration. read more

I will be the billionth person to rave about Vonetta Dumas, but I can gaurantee I will not be the last. She is fantastic. I came in after reading all the reviews on how amazing she is and I told her this too. I have had only 2 good hair cuts in my life (Vonetta now being the second). The first words out of her mouth, besides thank you, were "If I'm not good for you then I'm not good at all." It is rare to find a person who actually cares about pleasing the client rather than thinking they know best. Just because a person knows more about hair than me doesn't mean they know more about my hair than me. My hair was long, it was lifeless, damaged, dry, frizzy, all around gross. I was afraid to cut off so much but we talked about what would be the best length for me to grow my hair long and healthy. We picked a spot and she didn't go even a centimeter above or below. My hair hits my shoulder blades, has body, layers, and pizazz. She listens and understands. She is perfect. Hands down the nicest, friendliest, and most importanty the best hair dresser I have been in contact with. I already made my next appointment to get my hair highlighted by her! I have been in DC for 10 years, and I have threatened to shave myself BALD for want of a good stylist. I've found flakes and overpriced idiots. One stylist overcharged me $300 (Three HUNDRED dollars!) and then called me asking to borrow money another time. Hiwot rescued me. She's wonderful. And sweet. And fast. No more hours and hours in the shop for me, I'm out and looking quite lovely in about two hours- and I have lots of hair. Lots of coily, kinky, perfect circle hair that's sent other stylists screaming. The shop is tastefully appointed, very clean and the music is pleasant and doesn't swear or yell at me. You usually can't tell, but I have extremely curly/kinky hair. I have been relaxing my hair since 7th grade and have always struggled to find a hairdresser that doesn't scoff at the volume and curl in my hair. I have been going to Hiwot at Salon Revive for over three years now. I happened to stumble upon many Yelp reviews raving about Salon Revive's treatment of hair just like mine and decided to give it a try. The salon is an Aveda concept - so they use Aveda products but you can still manage to get out of there without paying an arm and a leg. I am charged $55 for a cut and blow dry (and Hiwot usually finishes up my appointment by running the flat iron through for a bit). Hiwot really listens to what you tell her and is a pleasure to chat with during your appointments! Most recently she talked me through getting bangs for the first time (who would have though a girl with naturally curly hair could get bangs!). I have also gotten my hair relaxed there a few times. In fact, that first time I went in and did not know the type of relaxer that was previously used on my hair, Hiwot insisted that I call my old salon immediately to ensure that the product she uses would be compatible. The receptionist is always super nice and they call you a day or so before your appointment to remind you. Also a bonus is that you can make appointments online now. This place was just ok...in my book. Pros: Doug was my stylist and he did a great job with my trim/cut. He was very nice and for the most part I enjoyed chatting with him. I was 20 minutes late (DC traffic is horrible) and I was still able to keep my appointment and get out at a reasonable time. Cons: Doug was a little too chatty at times, especially as I was reading my book and obviously did not want to talk. I also didn't appreciate how he kept saying my hair was damaged and my previous stylist didn't know what she was doing. FALSE!! I think this place is pretty expensive but I can understand DC prices. I guess I'm just spoiled having gone to the same person and paying a pretty low rate for almost all of my life. My hair only lasted a day. This has happened at other salons, but the way Doug talked unexpected it to at least make it through the weekend (I went on a Thursday evening). All in all, I'd probably go to back as a last resort. read more

After my first visit in December 2010, I am still a fan of Salon Revive. My two beloved stylists left {yes, I go that infrequently} and so I had to bounce around a bit ... between Hiwot and Yodit.. After reading their reviews, I figured that would be safest and it was. Yodit has done my hair once and I spent most of the time fawning over her beautiful fro. I go to see Hiwot most of the time and I adore her. She's done my color twice, is masterful with a flat iron, and understands that trim means trim .. not give me a cut / layers / new style. I've recommended SR to many of my friends who are new to the area or need a stylist and I will continue to. It's clean, the staff is friendly, and I always get what I ask for. read more

I have been going to Aveda concept salons for years from California to Hawaii & NYC. After reading reviews on YELP about Hiwot I was very excited. She was very pleasant on my first visit yet, cut my hair too short. Months later I went back and explained what I wanted again, long layers. Again it was cut too short. Well, I went back for my 3rd time thinking that she just needed to get to know my type of curly hair. I have long hair that is not too course or overly kinky. She seemed annoyed that I was back, cut my hair too short with funky steps, NOT layers, and then was even more annoyed that I wanted my hair blown out!!! She spends about 15 minutes cutting my hair each time, doesn't listen to what I want and then is annoyed when I want my hair blown out!!! Sorry Aveda, this is a poor cry to what I grew up with and expect from an Aveda salon. I found a new salon where I had my hair cut right the first time, makes me feel welcome every month they see me and always expect to blown out my hair! read more

Hey there beauty-hounds! I'm back from vacay (too much sun, too much tequila). You won't regret checking out Salon Revive--an Aveda concept salon one block from the U Street metro stop (that means it's uber accessible oh-car-free-ones). The two owners are super nice and extremely talented. They both once worked at Salon Circe in Dupont; this is their own shop. I rolled in this week to have my "new mommy" hair transformed back into my "professional 'do." (How did lack of sleep give me so many new gray hairs anyway?!) Anyway, Hiwot did my do (say her name like Hewitt). I'm super happy. The cut and color were super affordable. I'm about to be back to work (sniff, sniff) with style. Fait accompli. The salon is very clean and calm, and I know I mentioned it is a conveniently located Aveda concept salon. (fellow hounds--you know what this means!). Great products w/o the GTown/CTown parking horror, or prices, or surly staff. Double bonus!! I have type 4 natural hair. It seems to be near impossible to find salons that cater to this hair type. I travel to NYC occasionally to visit some salons there that specialize in curly to extremely coily hair textures. Since it is so hard to find good, skilled stylists that don't rip through my type of hair, i mostly care for my hair at home, but when i want to get occasional blowouts, i mostly visit salon revive because they have several stylists there who understand how to work with thick, coily hair. I have had good experiences with yodit, hewit, and lately i have been going to Galya. Galya is patient and she listens! She doesnt just rip and tear through my hair. She knows how to detangle my coily hair when it is wet with hardly any hair loss. read more

I read the reviews thinking this salon was the best place in the city. I was pretty disappointed. I wanted a simple updo for a gala dinner I was attending that evening. First off, I waited 35minutes because they had "lost' my reservation. Then when I finally was assigned a stylist - she proceeded to upsell a bunch of product (its an Aveda salon) and extra services to me. When it came to the shampoo the water was FREEZING - something to do with an outage? Finally, the actually updo was very meh - I tried to be as descriptive as I could but in the end it just looked like I was going to homecoming back in 2002 and put a half a can of hair spray on my head. To top it off it was way overpriced - $95 with tip! Sadly I won't be returning to Salon Revive. read more

Thank goodness for Salon Revive. It's a wonderful salon that caters to hair of all types, but they are especially good with managing natural African American hair (they're darned good with relaxed hair too). I would give them 5 stars, but their online appointment confirmation process could be better. My stylist, Yodit, is a true rock star. I've had long, relaxed hair all my life, and she emotionally got me through cutting the majority of it off to transition to natural hair. We're still in the process, and she gives me the confidence to wear my new do through her amazing skill with a pair of scissors and maintenance instructions. By the way, they push Aveda products because they WORK! Give them your contact information and they'll invite you to their holiday party where they have a makeup stylist on hand and they do makeovers. I went last year and had a wonderful time. read more

Upon arriving for my 10am appointment on time, I was made to stand outside, during a day of extreme winds. They keep the front door locked for some reason. Anyway, the receptionist motioned to me after a moment but continued speaking on her cell. After a minute, she finished the call and finally let me in. She checks me in then went to notify the stylist. I over hear her asking what I was getting done. The receptionist walked me over and I sit next to her chair...she's working on someone and says to me "what are you getting" in an annoyed tone. I told her I have a sew-in & I just need wash/style. She then loudly asks me while touching my hair, "is this fake?!, it looks fake!" I was shocked and completely embarrassed. I told her no. She goes "well if it's fake we can't do it, you won't be able to get it done". I am flabbergasted. I asked her what she thought it was?! Should have left then. She then tested a small piece & said "I didn't burn, I guess it's fine". After a few mins I'm ushered to the shampoo bowl. After another few moments the shampoo girl says "sorry, it's going to be a few minutes". I wait. 15 minutes later another stylists asks me to get up so she can wash her client. Someone cleaned a chair off for me and again, I waited! Noticing my annoyance another stylists asks another shampoo girl if she could take me when done. At 10:45 I get back into the chair for a very poor shampoo experience. You should ask if there are any itchy spots. I'm wearing weave!!! After washing, I sit next to the stylists chair and another client has come in. The stylists introduced herself and says "Hi, I'm Dion, I'll be taking care of you". Never ONCE did she introduce herself to me. I felt slighted. Dion then puts me under the dryer. After drying, I get in her chair. After a bit. She says "oh, this hair is so nice, it is real. So nice it seems fake". Then asks if I "had big plans". At this same time, Dion's client goes to the receptionist to complain. She was supposed to be under the dryer for 20 mins but was under for an hour. She asks if this is normal practice to keep their clients waiting. She's assured all will be ok. The client sits back down & eventually Dion says to her, "I'm sorry for the delay, but word or advice, you née to book early if you want to leave early. We really busy today. You must have booked at the last minute." The client responds that she didn't. Dion says "well, they usually gives last minute clients to me because I'm new". She apologies to her and 5 minutes later she apologizes to me. All this transpired while working on my hair. The audacity to blame the client. I didn't book last minute. AWFUL. I do not recommend you spend your hard earned money here. Spend with business who appreciate you. read more
