I can understand why Salon Roi struggles with these reviews. It seems to me, this Baltic women run place, best serve their Eastern European/Russian women clients who are their friends or friends of friends, and stiffs everyone else, especially the ignorant tourists at the local hotels. These women don't have much business or customer service sense, but they are good at over charging/pushing product, wherever possible. I've been a Salon Roi neighbor for five years and popped in a few times over the years, never really impressed by the customer service experience. I walked in today and asked for the price of a full leg wax. I was shown the printed price on their price list, but when rung up, overcharged $1. Not that $1 breaks my bank at all, but when I was charged and mentioned that it is $1 more than what I was shown on the price list, I was told, that was the old price list (but they showed me), they increased the prices for 2012-this is June, so that is TOTAL BS, trying to scrimp a little more. It is a matter of principal. If this place gave good regular customer service I'd be a regular, I get my nails done monthly, full leg, bimonthly Brazilian, and eyebrow threading monthly, but their customer service is lacking, I'm speaking of the front desk women. The latina woman who did the wax did a fine job, I almost feel sorry she has to work for these Baltic women who probably stiff her too. I wonder if they knew I was European, a neighbor country, they would treat me different. I'll stick to Mimosa for nails and Dupont Threading for waxing and threading, simply because of their friendly HONEST CUSTOMER FRONT DESK SERVICE not elitist Batlic women who only are concerned about service to their buddies. read more

I went to Salon Roi for a massage during SpaWeek. It was the end of the workday, and I had been looking forward to this since pushing my unfit winter body through the Cherry Blossom race a few weeks ago. Nick was my masseuse, young and fairly new on the job and out of school. The massage wasn't awful (and definitely no kind of "sexual harassment" or anything that could have been misconstrued, as another yelper posted), but he seemed to have very little interest in being there. Granted, he had probably been doing massages all day... but that's the job he signed up for and he needs to treat each guest as though it's a fresh start to his day and he's happy to see them. Also, the massage lasted 40 minutes (not 50), concentrated on only one part of the body, and I felt rushed out of there after wards (not the spa experience I had been looking forward to for weeks). If Nick could find greater enthusiasm for his job and pick up some better customer service skills, I think he would do well. I went to Salon Roi this past Saturday for a deep tissue massage. And received anything but that. I saw Nick and he was very unprofessional and disrepectful. He is a prevert and should be fired. He touched me in places that he should not have touched. When I called and informed the manager, he took up for Nick and argued me down that they were professionals, and that maybe I didn't know what to expect since it was my first time getting a massage. Granted I've never got a massage but I know when I am being violated. The manager ended up hanging the phone up on me about 5 minutes into the conversation. I went to Salon Roi during spa week for a 50 minute deep tissue massage. Despite constant directions, the masseuse was unable to give a decent massage. Even worse, the massage lasted under 40 minutes (over ten minutes shorter than advertised). I will definitely not be returning to Salon Roi. read more

I wish I could write a wonderful 5-star review for this salon, but after my experience last week I am unable to do so. I had been here two times this summer (on a Groupon deal the first time then on my own the second time) and had a pleasant waxing experience so I decided to go one step further and have a facial in addition to my Brazilian this time...BIG MISTAKE! I requested Daiva because I liked the work she did the first time. First, I should say that I don't' have acne or any other skin problems. In fact, Daiva even remarked herself how good my skin was. After she completed the facial my face looked brighter and smooth, albeit a little tender. The next morning when I woke up my whole face was itchy and red like mad! I had raised splotches all over. My husband said it looked like I had a rash but I convinced him that it was just my skin recovering from the facial and that the redness and itchiness would go away. Almost a week later with little improvement to my skin, I called the salon and told them about my symptoms. The receptionist told me that Daiva, my esthetician, would be calling me back to discuss my symptoms by 2pm. The receptionist later called back and informed me that Daiva wouldn't be in until about 3:30pm and she would call me then, but that I could've walked in at any point in the past week to have my skin looked at. I told her how busy my schedule was and that it was literally the first couple of minutes I had free since getting the facial (I do have a life besides running back and forth to the salon!), otherwise I would've been in there the next day. I have had many facials before,this one and NEVER have I had anything like this happen to my face. My skin looks WORSE today than it did before I ever walked in to the salon! To make a long story shorter, I never heard from Daiva or anyone else from Salon Roi for that matter. I think it is completely unprofessional and disgusting that they couldn't even offer me the common courtesy of a phone call to at least explain or describe what she used to botch my face up so badly so that I never use it again. I feel especially slighted because I even tipped her my usual 20% of the original price of both my services, like I have every other time I've been, and Daiva has still treated me like my business and the condition of my skin do not concern her. It's no wonder there have only been 1-2 clients in the whole 3-story salon each time I have been. Don't fall for the cheap internet deals. Save your money and go to a more REPUTABLE salon. We've had haircuts (Roi), perms (Blanca), highlights (Roi), manicures and pedicures (Marita) and messages (Zula and Annette) and we've been spoiled by the excellence and care they always provide. I bought a groupon to use for a mani/pedi. Wasn't too difficult to make an appt (was surprised based on other groupon experiences). The decor is quite....interesting. The waiting area is basically a love seat sitting among salon chairs and there was a serious lack of interesting reading material. I would agree w Diana K that the mani/pedi was not a quick process, but I preferred that she took the time to massage my legs and feet. Was super pleased with mani/pedi until two days later when basically all the paint chipped off 4 of my finger nails. Not sure if it was the nail polish I picked out, but don't think I would pay the full price again to find out. read more

I was apprehensive to purchase a groupon because I was afraid the hair stylist would spend less time on me, but Michael and the salon treated me as if I had paid full price. I purchased a living social deal for Salon Roi for a Brazilian wax, which I redeemed on 9/12/13. The service was impeccable!! First, it is a very cute and dainty shop. The ambiance and the vibe was great. I almost didn't take advantage of my LS deal because of all of the negative yelp reviews. Hopefully, this review will not be "filtered", as the word really needs to get out that these people give GREAT customer service! My experience from start to finish: When I arrived, I was promptly greeted by the receptionist, whom was very friendly and polite, and offered a beverage. Next, I was ushered to the waiting area on the same floor and asked to fill out a new client form. While seated there I was greeted with smiles and a "hello" from every employee I encountered. Next, my esthetician (Emme) introduced herself as such and lead me upstairs to the treatment room where I prepared for my service. Before starting, she explained all of the products that she would be using and tested the wax on her arm first. Throughout my treatment, she explained her process step by step, i.e., why she chose to use one type of wax over the other, etc. I have been getting Brazilians for about 4 yrs. now, and i have NEVER had a painless experience until yesterday!! I went to Salon Roi for touch up (bleaching) on my roots and toning. I normally bleach my roots with periodic highlights through the entire hair. This was my first time in Roi Salon. Blanca was my recommended stylist. She discussed with me the color options and she advised a single-process color even though I was suspicious that she would be able to achieve the blonde shade I came with. I agreed on her idea believing that with her experience she knew what she was doing. The color was applied on my roots for good 50 min - burning and drying my hair even more then the bleach would (why she recommended avoiding bleach from the first place). After one hour, once my hair was washed, she did not even recommend applying a toner to the rest of my hair that then looked orange at the roots and pearly blonde on the rest of the hair. I was never more disappointed with my color. I would really appreciate if she looked at my natural hair a little more carefully and realized how dark my natural color actually was. Or I wonder even if she knows much about this at all. I was charged way more then I expected - considering that I needed to schedule another appointment with somebody else to fix my orange, brassy roots, and spend at least 3 hours on my messed up roots. read more

I went to Daiva for an eyebrow design and Beatrice for a hair cut. The eyebrown design was a great experience. She had a lot to work with since I let them grow out for about a month but the wax wasn't painful and the design is excellent. She listened to my suggestions and even went in a second time to help me get the shape I wanted. It was the exact opposite of a "nail salon" experience, the room was hygenic, she asked my opinion and she went slowly so she wouldn't mess me up. On top of that, my brows are exactly the same. I wasn't sure I loved the new shape at first but it's beautiful and natural. I also got a hair cut from Beatrice which was the best cut I've ever had. The price difference between a cut and a cut and style was crazy ($25 vs $60) and not worth it for how I looked when she was done but it's OK, I'll know next time to just get a cut and style it myself. read more

Roi has cut my short hair for years and I consistently receive compliments--including from complete strangers--on my haircuts. He asks exactly what you want and listens. And the price is reasonable compared to most DC stylists (around $55). The Marilyn Monroe mural on the outside wall is a DC landmark that Roi commissioned, and it sets the theme for the salon's interior in a grand old building. The good coffee (and muffins and strawberries on the weekends) is a bonus. read more

I think the salon staff are really nice here. I have gone in for hair and waxing services as I live in the neighborhood. Roy does a great job on hair and is great to talk to, very nice person. Daiva did my eyebrows and i thought she did an ok job. Overall, I am giving it 3 stars because I think the prices are way too high for the waxing services. For example, the eyebrow services range from $16 to $40 and it's difficult to tell what the wide discrepancies are for----seems like prices are almost made up randomly. read more

Diva makes you feel special. From the time I enter the salon I feel like "It's All About Me." The staff greet me as I arrive -- they remember stories I told during my last visit. Although Diva knows my skin type she takes the time to ask how I have been doing with my cleansing routine and if there are changes that she needs to be aware of -- this tells me that she is professional who knows that you must not make assumptions, but you need to keep current on the changes impacting your cliental. I love this place so much that my husband buys me gift cards and my girlfriend and I make a day out of it -- drinks, dinner and SALON RIO. read more

I go Mikey (Michael Hok) @ Salon Roi, and he is the best hairdresser i've ever had and I've been around a while and lived in NYC, Boston and DC. He is spectacular at identifying just what style and color will make you look best. You have to trust him. And, my hair always looks good, even when I do it myself. A close friend goes and she also adores him. I have never consistently gotten so many compliments on my hair from both friends and total strangers as I have since going to Mikey. He is also good at listening to your concerns about your hair/hair styles. His coloring is just amazing. I feel very lucky I by chance found him. read more
