Despite the bad reviews about Groupon customers, I had a great Groupon experience. I scheduled an appointment for a wax according to their deal and didnt have much problem getting a time I wanted so I could come after work. The salon IS out-dated, but from what I understand, the previous owner was Marilyn Monroe-obsessed and I can see how it would have looked eclectic (in a good way) in its hey-day. Alicia did my wax and was so thorough, I couldn't be more pleased. I can't tell you how many times I've had an aesthetician rip off a few strips of wax and tell you to meet her up front for her money. Alicia took her time, made sure I was comfortable, and went back through to tweeze anything that was too short for the wax to get. I'll also mention the type of wax used was the most pain-free I've experienced and did not leave my skin nearly as red and swollen as most other places. I'll definitely go back and be happy to pay full-price for the service I received. I agree with Stephen, that 5th star is waiting for the ultimate pampering service - complete with ambiance that Salon Roi is lacking - but at the end of the day, the end result was great! read more

I recently got a mani-pedi and I hate to say it, but I was far from impressed. The place was cute and the people were lovely, but I could have given myself a better mani-pedi. I was in and out in less than 45 minutes with NO pampering, and for the price you pay, I would expect some. My cuticles weren't pushed down, I had polish on my skin, no massage, dead skin still on my feet ...overall I was very disappointed. :( read more

Oh GOODNESS. I went in for a mani-pedi and it was across the board awful. She did a terrible job of cleaning up my nail beds, and the polish job was so streaky that it looked like my 6 year old niece did it. When I mentioned that to her she told me that it was my nail beds growing in. She clearly had NO idea what she was doing. And, the polish -- which should last for 3 weeks -- is peeling off TODAY. So then there's the price. The mani and pedi took 90 minutes because she was so slow but she did NOTHING special and if anything, did LESS than they would normally do at a mani and pedi. No massage. No calf work. No razor. No scrubbing my heels. But she was REAL slow, so yes, it did take 90 minutes. They tried to charge me $80 for a mani pedi. I gave the woman at the register a look of shock and she lowered it to $62 but even that is highway robbery. I will never ever return here again. Incompetence... at a hefty price. read more

This is a review for a facial I had here. I had gone through severe hormonal imbalances the last few months and had acne scars and dull skin. After my facial I was glowing. It has been a month and my skin looks just as good as the day I left the salon. They really know there stuff and use all natural ingredients. They made recommendations about what I can do to continue to maintain my skin after my facial and I followed the advice and my skin has just continue to improve ever since. I was really happy with Fouzia's work. She color and blow dry my hair. I love the color and my blow dry lasted for 3 days. According to her, it was a rushed job as I was in a hurry. I can only comment on the facial with Daiva as I've never received any other service here. Daiva is great -- she gives a wonderful, very thorough facial and always explains what she is doing and why. She is very sweet and calm and I truly enjoy the hour. She recommends products, but never pushes them on me. I would recommend her for a facial for sure. read more

I stopped in for a nice gel manicure. The nail tech was very nice and did a good job with my cuticles and shaping my nails. However, the gel polish began peeling off less than a week in. For $45 for a manicure, I would go elsewhere. read more

This was my first visit to Salon Roi, and I really enjoyed it. The administrative assistant Evelyn was very professional, warm, and helpful. I I as asked to fill out a form about my overall health and my skin regimen Another stylist was kind enough to offer me coffee. My aesthetician Daiva did the acne clearing facial with extractions and she is trluly excellent. I came in with very painful cystic acne which I am having treated ( retin-A and Clindamycin), but is still persistant. The room and the salon is very clean, and has a vintage Hollywood Glamour theme. The owner clearly loves the iconic beauty Marilyn Monroe whose image is well incorporated into the decor. The room was very relaxing, with low lit light and soft calming music which helped to create a tranquil environment. Daiva thoroughly but gently, cleansed my skin, did several masque treatments and finally extractions of pustules and the cysts. My skin looks much much better and my cysts are already drying up. Daiva is excellent she is professional, on time, and very knowledgeable. She selected some products and I bought 2 of the three. I will definitely keep going there and I recommend Salon Roi. A. I have been seeing her for natural looking brow waxings and marvelous facials for more than 10 years and this weekend, she cut and styled my hair. I wanted a trim with long layers and subtle, layered side swept bangs. Daiva encouraged me to pick out some hair inspiration pics in advance, so that we could discuss ideas at the appointment. She always takes the time to help explain the particulars of whatever treatment she provides and shares her expert knowledge to suggest improvements for your personal beauty regiment whether it be hair care or face care. Well I'll just be honest and admit that I'm not the smallest guy in the world. Last time I checked I run around 280 pounds but my weight also has a tendency to fluctuate on a weekly basis. I've never really taken good care of myself hence the reason why I'm at my current weight. I finally decided to make a change so I went in to see what they offer. At first it felt a little awkward being in a salon but the staff was very helpful. I ended up getting a pedicure, manicure and Swedish message. I love Salon Roi! I stumbled upon this place about a year ago and have been going there ever since. I was sick of paying a ridiculous amount of $ at my other salon for sub-par service, so I went to Salon Roi on a whim and was immediately greeted by Blanca, who is fabulous. She really takes the time to listen to what you want (in my case, highlights) and doesn't rush through the process. She's super friendly and has been working there forever, so she's a pro. My hair always turns out great and she always throws in a bunch of free samples at the end of the appointment. I haven't had any spa services here but I'm actually booked for a facial next week so I will post a review after that. read more

I had a great experience at Salon Roi and with Elle. She is truly awesome at what she does and knows her stuff. I really appreciated her taking the time to talk with me and actually look at my hair before doing anything to make sure we were on the same page. I've been going to the Daiva for hair removal and facial services for the past 15+ years every several weeks. She does a very fast job with waxing all my body hair and making sure my skin looks great while relaxing me at the same time. I have been waxing all my life as I've been blessed/cursed with thick, coarse dark hair and extremely sensitive skin. I believe Salon Roi is one of the top Salons in the Washington DC area. The four story building has a unique style in of it's own. Yes the style is a bit out-dated but the Victorian "Monroe" influenced Building has a lot of style and elegance. Being out-dated comes back as being vintage and thats how I visualize this Salon, with the architectural staircase being one of my favorite styles of the Salon. It has been about a year since the first time I started getting my haircut here and other services as well. I can honestly say the stylist as well as other staff members are very inviting and professional. I am always greeted with a friendly hello and offered a drink such as water or coffee. I get my hair cut and styled by Michael who is amazing at what he does. His style is very creative and modern. I usually get my haircut and a color here or there every 2-3 weeks. When it comes to style of the haircut I come with an idea and let Michael incorporate his style. I think he is confident in his style and technique for cutting hair. Other salons that I have been to use razors to blend and shave where as with Michael he uses his shears/ scissors only and that takes some skill. In comparison to other stylist that I have been to, Michaels technique at cutting/ styling and dying hair is above professional. His style is simple but yet fashionable I would definitely recommend this place to all of my friends and family. If you have style and like to keep up with your body this place is for you. The staff that work here take pride in what they do and it shows through the work they exhibit. Not everyone or everything is perfect but the experience I have here comes very close to it everytime. read more

I went in for balayage two years ago after buying a groupon and this place ruined my hair. I'm not even talking about the color. I told the guy who did my hair that I don't want to go too light because my hair gets frizzy and I don't think he listened because every stylist I've seen since then has told me he over-processed my hair. I could tell my hair was ruined after the first shampoo post-salon when the hair strands didn't even feel like my hair and were frizzy and dry. I called the salon and they didn't seem too concerned. At the time I didn't realize how bad it was. Since then it's been a struggle to keep my hair from breaking everywhere, it's frizzy, doesn't feel good to the touch, and I lost my shine. I've done lots of masks, deep conditioning, avoiding heat, had to keep my hair short, etc. all because of this salon. Be careful and if you have fine hair, even if it's dark, tell the stylist to go really really gentle with the bleach. read more

I got a deep cleansing facial today. It is an old townhome renovated into a salon/spa. When you walk in and up the stairs the first two floors were all salon. It was not a relaxing environment at all. So if you go for the environment it's so so. They take you up to the top floor to a private room for the facial, very nice and relaxing. Odeta did my face. She was very sweet and did a fantastic job. I would go back to her and recommend her to friends. The price is a little much since you don't get the 'spa' environment with the deal. This review is for Daiva's eyebrow and eyelash services only. I would give 10 stars if they were an option, because her skills are 100% top-notch. While living in DC, I tried a number of places for waxing and tinting my strawberry-blond brows, and all of them butchered the job. If you have thick hairy dark brows, and are looking for a tight skinny line clean up, then maybe you can go anywhere. But I am constantly seeking a thicker, fuller brow with tint so they actually show up on my face. Daiva is a master at providing this, using wonderful vegetable dyes and brow brushes instead of toxic hair dye and massive bulky hair dye brushes (like I've experienced elsewhere). She takes her time and gives you exactly what you want, checking in in stages to make sure it's going the way you picture it. Now that I live in Seattle, I have to rely on just seeing her once a year or so whenever I'm in DC. It's the first appointment I book. read more

The woman who i did a wax with the first time is no longer with Salon Roi which made me nervous at first but I'l happy I didn't cancel. My waxing with Alicia was quick and as painless as they come -- she was very efficient and I'm pleased with the results. My facial with Emma was a deep pore cleaning and again, I left happy. She gave good advice on my normal routine and didn't try to sell me any products which is a huge win in my mind. When you check out, they give coupons for your next visit. I am charmed with the work Blanca did with my very thick, but very fine (no body at all!!) hair. I went in for a balayage, and it turned out pretty good. When I got home, I noticed that my face was swollen, red and itchy. I clearly had a reaction from something they put in my hair, and because of that I would not recommend this salon. Also, my balayage had some clear unblended strands.
