Pretty decent treatment, but I had an amazing aesthetician who has been doing her work for 5 years - her name starts with a "Z," and she is in her early/mid-20s, but I do not dare to type her name (no idea how to spell it!!!). Sounds something like Za-kai-ya?? Anyhow, I was impressed, and I was given a coupon for another visit within 1.5 months - so I booked another deep cleansing facial as I left. Like other reviewers, yes, it is an old building, but.... if all we did was go to brand new recently renovated businesses, we'd be out of luck. Already knowing this, I was prepared not to let it bother me. Docking one star because I was told that I can only tip with cash or check, neither of which I had at the moment. There is a convenient ATM in their business establishment, making me wonder if there is motivation for this "policy." Hmmm.... The other reason is that during the session, there was lively conversation, but no specific questions about my comfort. However, because it was a dialogue back and forth, my presumption is that she could tell I would tell her if something was uncomfortable, etc. This was fine for me, because, yes, I would speak up if something was "off," but some timid clients might feel too shy or insecure to say something. Anyhow, discussion is helpful before sometime works on your face for an hour. I appreciated the sensitive and, well, probing questions about my concerns. It worked well to help determine the products she would use. It also helped to determine the type of facial and suggestions she made for me for ongoing skin care. She made me feel as though all my problems/ concerns were normal, nothing to go crazy over, and just encouraged good practices rather than pushing products. The lighting was nice, the music was soft, but not my ideal. The temperature was comfortable, the room private and well-provisioned. The experience was seamless from start to finish. She didn't miss a beat. Everything was smooth and comfortable - all things considered. I felt confident in her skills and was happy with the glowing results. OMG what I've been looking for for years!! I've lived in DC for over 5yrs but I would drive out to VA for my hair. Dc salons are just soooo pricey. I have also had long brown hair. I normally just get trims and deep conditioning but I wanted to add some spice in my life and add some colors but GOD it's expensive! So I went on Gilt and Groupon etc. it takes a lot of research. I wasn't sure what I needed so before I bought a package I thought I'd stop by. I came in on a Thursday afternoon and was instantly greeted by a few people. I explained my situation and Michael took me by the hand to his chair and we talked. We discussed what I wanted and my options. He took the time to explain the pros and cons of going lighter and also assumed me he could give me what I want. He was even ready to take me later that day!! And they didn't treat me any different when I mentioned a Groupon (some places act like they are annoyed you are using a Groupon, like oh it's only for certain stylists) but not here! I came back the next day and again given a super warm greeting. When Michael mixed the colors, I was offered a mani WHILE I get my color for their nail tech. I felt like I was in a movie or in Beverly Hills! LoL ok jk jk but it was a really nice offer. I declined because I just got a gel mani earlier in the week. Michael again explained the whole process and talked me thru each step. (I think he could tell I was a little scared). Color, balayage, cut and style ALL in under 3 hrs!!! The color is a little more blonde than I wanted but I was soooo impressed!! The staff was sooo sweet, compliments from everyone as I paid and walked downstairs. It was a real confidence booster! I found Salon Roi on Groupon last fall, which is my favorite way to explore salons in a new area. Michael has been doing my hair since! He's super talented and isn't afraid to give you feedback that most stylists won't (He talked me out of an unflattering cut, makes suggestions to color ideas I have that he thinks would look better, etc.). I love him! My only room for growth is in the salon itself. There isn't a comfortable place to be when you're under heat processing or waiting for color to develop. After an Aveda salon destroyed my hair by burning it with bleach, I went to Salon Roi where the amazing Daiva has been meticulously working to repair my hair each month over the last year. I will never forget the first time I came in (New Years Eve) for her to save my hair, and she spent over 4hrs as no color would deposit due to the extreme porousness and breakage. Well, I have no words to describe how attentive and knowledgeable Fouziya was! Last Saturday was my 25th birthday and she did a balayage on my hair and man oh man she killed it. Usually, I am very picky with whoever touches my hair but with Fouziya I could just relax. I trusted she knew what she was doing and indeed she did. My review is for a Brazilian wax with Zakiyah, that I purchased as a living social deal. The salon itself is really fun-looking. I love the decor, it's quirky yet very relaxing for me. If you have troubles navigating stairs however, be wary as this place has several floors and stair cases and I don't recall seeing an elevator. There is an ATM on site which is very helpful, the staff are so sweet there as well. I love it! This was the first time I'd ever had a brazilian wax and Z was great with keeping me at ease, she explained the whole process and she works fast! It was as pain free as a wax job down there could be, no bruising, just a good job. Mega thanks to her, I'll be a regular here now. It's been two years since I went to Salon Roi for a Spa Week "massage." I'm embarrassed that I've done nothing until now to expose the disgusting behavior of their employee Nick. Not only was he sniffling and sick with a running nose, but he was EXTREMELY inappropriate during the massage. I had read one review prior to my appointment by a woman that he had been inappropriate with her, but thought she was exaggerating or new to massages and just uncomfortable with them in general. If it wasn't for the price I would give this place a 5. Michael is simply the best but you have to certainly pay the price. They occasionally will have a flash deal if you sign up for emails but it's typically only valid for that day and maybe even specific hours during that day. Anyways back to Michael, he's great with color and realistically trying. To execute what you want and managing expectations to get there over a few appointments to prevent hair damage. I was visiting the area and needed a manicure desperately. They were able to take me as a walk-in. There was only one nail tech working on a Saturday afternoon. The place is super cute (lots of stairs), but way expensive. I paid $29 for a manicure! I've never paid that in my life. She did a good job, but it wasn't that amazing for the price I paid. DISCLAIMER: No, my comments are not carping. These are condign criticisms. Has anyone ever watched "Tabatha's Salon Takeover" on Bravo Network??? Well, THIS salon needs to be taken over. Tabatha needs to bust through that salon and whip the staff into some serious shape! So, I came here because of a mani/pedi groupon that my bf gifted me. Granted, I showed up earlier than my scheduled appoiment time... but from what I noticed, everyone in this salon moves VERY SLOW. As an NYC metro girl at heart, the one thing that really bothers me is inefficiency. Don't get me wrong - everyone at the salon is nice and cordial, but I definitely wouldn't go back. In addition, the salon is not comely at all. In fact, it's very quirky as are its employees. None of the staff seemed like actual stylists or aestheticians, save for the asian male salonist. I mean, come on, if that's your job, shouldn't you at least LOOK the part (as in, take care of your own appearance to set precedence)? So returning to the topic of slowness: I literally fell asleep while the lady was doing my manicure and pedicure... and let's just say that if I was in a hurry that day, you can bet your bottom dollar that I'd have been fuming from the lack of alacrity. I have no problem with the quality of the pedicure I received. The nail tech was very good and very nice to talk to. However... everything else was somewhat underwhelming. Kitschy, pink, leopard--but not in a young, fun way...more like an "I'm a cougar and I'm trying to hard to attract young men even though I'm much their senior" kind of way. Went in for a pedicure, had looked at the menu online and it said $39+. Yes, very pricey. But I was desperate. And, as I've said in my other reviews... I'm new to DC and just didn't know any better! I arrive on time for my appointment and I am asked to wait on an old couch. I wait. I pick up a magazine and thumb through it. A woman approaches me and we go upstairs for my pedi. The place is deserted. Strange. She and I are alone in a room with more than one pedi-chair. She asks me if I wanted a regular pedicure or the express. I say I want the "regular" one, assuming that that is the pedicure that costs $39 ridiculous dollars. She says "great" because "the other service is not much more than a polish change." Pedicure proceeds, normal chit-chat ensues and it's done. Toes look great and it's time to let them dry. Instead of bringing the dryer-device thing to me, she beckons me to walk across the floor of the room barefoot. (Aside: I'm not a freaky germ-a-phobe, you should see my kitchen... that would prove it to you.) But it felt kind of gross since I'd just soaked my feet and had lotion applied to them...yuck. After the toes dry, I'm ready to slip on my flip flops and hit the DC pavement with wild walking abandon. I head downstairs to pay. She tells me it's $47. I'm shocked. There's something much more shocking to me about a $47 pedicure than the $39 one I had mentally prepared for. Lame, I know. But what does this mean? Well, it means that the "express pedicure" is just 8 dollars cheaper and is "not much more than a polish change." I felt duped. I thought "regular" pedicure was "regular" pedicure. At NO time did I say the words "spa pedicure" which is secret nail salon code for "do you want the more expensive pedicure that takes longer?" But alas, I am lame. I didn't complain, I just paid the $47 plus tip. I will not be back. read more

I would love to give this Salon 5 stars, I liked my haircut so much, but I would be wrong if I ignored the lack of bells and whistles that I like if I'm paying $40-50 for a cut. I was in desparate need of a haircut just out of the Metro in AM, so I called Salon Roi just to see if they happened to have any availability at 5PM on a Friday. Since I was literally right outside, they were extremely friendly and said to just come right up. I was handed over to Blanca who greeted me as soon as I reached the receptionist, and took me back to her chair. I get a simple cut, 2 on the sides, faded up, real short on the top, messy/spiked in the front, yet somehow, the last 3 places I tried in DC/Bethesda (just moved here in April), were extremely sub-par considering the $$. As such, I was hesitant to drop another 50 bucks only to wish I had just gone to SuperCuts, but I figured let's give it a shot. Blanca definitely made me glad I came in. She was extremely friendly, has worked there for years (I won't say how many), and gave me the best cut I've had in a long time. The only reason I can't give this place 5 stars is the ambiance wasn't top notch, and I've been to salons/high-end barbers in the past where you are offered beer/wine, a hot towel and facial massage. That will always be my 5-star experience, but this is probably the best standalone cut I've had. Highly recommended for men's cuts! read more

I got a Groupon deal for this place, and I really loved it. I'm thinking about making it my regular place for where I get certain bidness done. It's not hair styling. It's not nails. Use your imagination. So, they started about 10 minutes late, and in that time, two different staffers brought me water, checked on me, apologized for the wait and introduced themselves. Since my regular place regularly starts 15-20 minutes late and does none of this, I felt like a fucking fairy princess. Enough vulgarities. The space is inviting, and the different service areas (because chicks are just like cars) are separated, making things more intimate. I overheard the the very funny and sweet male stylist talking candidly to what seemed like a new customer, which I like. Small talk is painful in these places. Emma, my "stylist" was incredibly helpful and explained things, even though I threw my nose into the air and informed her that I was a pro at this particular procedure. She talked to me about the history of the salon - Did you know it's almost 45 years old and was the first salon in DC to cater to both men and women? Well, now you do. The staff is wonderful, the three-floor salon is gorgeous, and everyone there is clearly doing what businesses are supposed to do when giving away their services for a discounted price: make you want to come back even without the Groupon. I found out about Salon Roi from Spa Week. The salon is convinenetly located right next to the Woodley Park metro and has minimal signage, but not hard to find. It's in an older, 4-story building, and feels very european with a hint of animal print and a lot of pink. First, I got my eyebrows done by Daiva. Like the previous reviewer said, she's fabulous. I'm already planning on going back to get a facial from her. They use all-natural products with minimal scents (The Body Shop, Phyto, Biomedics). Both my friend and I got 60-minute Swedish Massages (spa week specials) from Daiva and Annette, respectively. Both were great. Again, minimal products, totally all-natural. I also met Mimi and saw some other stylists. Everyone seemed very happy with their services. What a gem of a salon with wonderful staff! read more

First with the positive - I had an express facial with Odeta, who was lovely and knowledgeable. Highly recommend her. The receptionist was friendly and offered me a glass of water. However, the mani-pedi with Beatrice was awful. She's also lovely, but just being honest here -- 4 nails chipped the following day and I actually PEELED the rest off of all ten nails, it was so thick and soft. I didn't even need polish remover! There was almost no massage, and my nails look no better than before. The whole thing was a big waste of time. The salon has a kind of faded glory look to it, but the facial room was about 4 flights of stairs up (fine for me, but not handicapped accessible!) For the mani-pedi, I sat in a regular chair (like a desk chair, not the usual big salon chair) and my feet were in a drug store footbath. read more

I would actually like to give Salon Roi a 5 star rating for their service, but I noticed that Yelp is filtering many high and low reviews, and I don't want them to hide this one. I've had the opportunity to try most of their services, and would definitely recommend them. Their facials are fantastic, and made my skin look and feel much better after their service and advice for follow-on care. Their waxing and tinting never left me disappointed. I'm planning on trying their massages. The hair service is wonderful. I personally tried three different stylists, and all were very good and had their own style. Personally, I think the prices are very reasonable for the DC area. I always look forward to spending a couple of hours in the salon itself because of its historical feel, and the overall vibe of the neighborhood. Unfortunately, i didn't receive the cut i was looking for. I arrived early and was perfectly fine waiting for my scheduled stylist but another one was free and said he would step in. I think he might have been rushing because he squeezed me in and i wish i insisted on waiting for my scheduled appointment. At first he suggested cutting dry but static was a big problem with the cold weather. We should have cut after washing, so my face framing was uneven and choppy. I asked to correct it several times but the stylist wasn't able to correct it sufficiently. He never tried wetting my hair or fixing the problem until i asked. The salon seems nice, clean and well managed but i was unfortunately unsatisfied with my first experience. read more

$90 gets you a; brow wax that has poorly shaped trim with brows that have a funny point/Spock look to it (and I had to pluck when I got home b/c she missed several shorter ones), a pedicure that is totally sloppy and all over my skin & a manicure that is peeling off 24 hours later (it was totally peeled off by day 2!). NOT even remotely worth the $90 I paid - go somewhere else (btw - seriously, a pedi @ Saks Fifth Ave Spa costs $38, here is $40 - come on!). Came here on a Sunday afternoon with a living social for 2 waxes. I was early so I waited in an empty salon area - it was surprisingly quiet for a weekend! The building is super cute - looks like a converted townhouse so the various salon services (haircuts, waxing, facials) happen in little rooms spread out across a couple floors. Zakiya ("Zee") did my waxing and she was FANTASTIC. She made me feel totally at ease and we chatted about everything under the sun to make the time pass faster. She was very thorough and professional but made me feel like I was with an old friend; she just has that quality about her. She answered my questions about skin care without being pushy and trying to sell me products. The salon itself is not particularly polished or swanky and things look a little old, but it was clean. My first one star review. It's very unfortunate because of the location and I don't like giving anyone a bad review. I got waxed and a manicure by Rosie. I could have done a better job myself. My nails looked worse afterwards then when I went in. They were uneven and rough. The polish was done in a rush, she wasn't paying attention to what she was doing because she was talking about some dramas in her life-very negative- and she also cut my cuticle and blamed me for it. When I get my services done the last thing I want to hear about are some strangers issues. It's so unprofessional and irritating. The waxing service: BEWARE, Rosie double dips. She used the same stick several times. You're suppose to throw it away before another application. This spreads disease if you don't know. This is truly horrifying. I'll never go back. 4.5 stars It had been some time (and by that I mean a few years) since I first stepped in to Salon Roi, so when I found another Living Social deal for this business, I decided to give them another try. In the past couple of years, a great deal has changed, and I feel that they have improved immensely since my first visit back in 2013. In fact, not only have I returned twice for waxing services, but I also just recently received a haircut through their salon services, and I have not once been disappointed. The new aesthetician for waxing services is miles above the previous person, with not just great personality but also a strong sense of hygiene and great skill with the work. Zakiya is fun, pleasant, and easy to talk to. For an experience that tends to be relatively unpleasant, she sure knows how to make it feel like a breeze! Even though it's a tiny bit more pricey than some of the places closer to me, it's worth going back here to know that I will be so well taken care of. On Wednesday evening, I went in for a haircut with Michael in the salon section. He was extremely fun and positive throughout the appointment and got me out the door remarkably quickly. He was even willing to cut my hair dry, which I've noticed is rare around here for a woman with such long hair, and still did a phenomenal job giving me what I wanted. My face is nicely framed by his mild layering and my hair feels lighter and healthier without looking distressingly shorter than it was. Salon Roi is in a great location with adorable decor and a really lovely bunch of people. Their prices are moderate, fair, and worth it considering the quality of work that you'll get done. I went to Salon Roi for facials with Daiva and she is a genius. My skin stays clear for weeks after one facial, but it does look a little puffy on the day of. In between facials, I've been using the Bioelements and Guinot mask products at home that Salon Roi carries, and my skin has been looking 100% better. The Marilyn Monroe theme running throughout the three floors is kind of kitschy, but I like it. I would have docked 1/2 star because I don't think I've ever had an appointment start on time, but other than that, I've only had great experiences. read more

I found Salon Roi through GroupOn. At first the reviews were alarming, but then I realized that the poor reviews were from 2011 and the more recent reviews were wonderful, so I took a chance. It was WELL WORTH the GroupOn and let me say, I am more than willing to go back at full price. I had never had a facial before today. Daina was attentive and informative. She spent 30 minutes grooming my eyebrows, and then after a lengthy conversation about my skin let me know that while they list more facial options than I ever knew existed, she would specialize the treatment for what my skin needed. My appointment was for 4:30, I got there early and they took me early. 2 hours later, no skimping because I had a GroupOn, I was glowing. The space where the facial took place was relaxing and comfortable. I was nervous that it might appear dirty based on past reviews, but I never saw anything dirty. When I went to leave, before I paid and tipped Daina gave me ANOTHER 1/2 half coupon. I was never pressured to purchase items. Over all, class act experience! read more
