I found Salon Roi through GroupOn. At first the reviews were alarming, but then I realized that the poor reviews were from 2011 and the more recent reviews were wonderful, so I took a chance. It was WELL WORTH the GroupOn and let me say, I am more than willing to go back at full price. I had never had a facial before today. Daina was attentive and informative. She spent 30 minutes grooming my eyebrows, and then after a lengthy conversation about my skin let me know that while they list more facial options than I ever knew existed, she would specialize the treatment for what my skin needed. My appointment was for 4:30, I got there early and they took me early. 2 hours later, no skimping because I had a GroupOn, I was glowing. The space where the facial took place was relaxing and comfortable. I was nervous that it might appear dirty based on past reviews, but I never saw anything dirty. Discussed the products that were being used, but didn't talk too much which was nice too. Wasn't pushy about buying any other products. Asked if you wanted to do extractions, instead of just doing it. Enjoyed the foot massage that came with it too. Space review: At first I thought there would be a lot of noise, but then you go up the stairs (admire the Marilyn Monroe artwork along the way) and then nothing. I really enjoyed my pedicure and getting my hair washed and blow-dried. They were able to squeeze me in at the last min but I still had to wait over 20 mins once I got there. My manicure on the other hand was not great I wanted a design that simply ended up not looking at all how I wanted. They gave me a discount because I had to wait but I still had to pay $100 and you have to tip multiple people so make sure you bring enough cash to tip everybody. Also before you call make sure that the girl that does the manicures is there. It was my first time and I didn't know that. I would recommend this place for hair but I was not happy with the manicure. read more

Salon Roi is a little gem, perfect spot for grabbing a manicure and pedicure with a girlfriend. The salon is quite large with two floors (hair downstairs, spa services upstairs). The spa area is straight out of a dollhouse - zebra striped carpet with pink walls and decor. Chairs were very comfy, and just a cozy atmosphere in general. Marita did my nails. She was very sweet and my hands and feet look great. I'm typically an in-and-out 45 minute mani/pedi kind of gal (Nails 2000 in Arlington is my normal spot), so I don't know that I'd spend $58 to go here again, but if you're getting your nails done for a special occasion or looking more for of a spa type atmosphere, I'd definitely recommend Salon Roi. read more

Ladies, as we all know, getting a wax down there is never really all that pleasant. But finding the right esthetician makes all the difference. I recently had an appointment with Emma and I could not be more pleased with her technique and my overall results. Emma was pleasant all around and did a great job. Not only did she explain her technique prior to even starting, she even asked about my comfort throughout the wax. Rather than strips, she uses hard wax and does not double dip. For those of you not familiar with hard wax, it's worth a try. I find that hard wax tends to pull from the root more and cause less breakage, which means less chance of ingrown hair. As for the salon itself, do not be off put with its less than modern salon look. It's in a much older building and it's decorated with kitschy like items. The salon rooms are kept clean though and that's what is most important! If you are in need of tidying up down there, I recommend booking an appointment with Emma. They were very nice but I wasn't satisfied with the color- firstly they told me single process color was just on the roots- the other salons I've been to have never said that and I've never heard that before- I know it to be all over color just once. Anyway, the first time I went it faded with the first wash but I was traveling so couldn't come back in for awhile. They agreed to let me come back in but I wish I would have taken photos because they didn't believe me. I explained that the first time the color was applied was in huge chunks and my hair is very thick so I thought it was a combination of those details that caused it to come out that way. I get that they don't make much money for doing this on a Groupon and they were trying to be nice though grinding their teeth on the second trip there but to be honest, my box hair color lasted longer. He is great to work with and highly knowledgeable about color - don't be shy about asking him for advice on what would work best for you. This salon is okay. I went because I had a gift card and wanted to get my nails done but it seems like it is better for hair or waxing. I booked a gel but received a regular manicure instead. I didn't speak up because the woman was kinda bossy about my short nails and I didn't want to stay longer. I was only charged for a regular manicure so that worked out fine. But it still felt a bit overpriced for DC ($29) and I left with something I felt like I could have done at home. The salon, however, is cute and clean but again, seems better suited for hair and waxing. Maybe just get your nails done somewhere else. read more

Bought a facial groupon as a birthday treat for myself. I had no trouble making an appointment, there wasn't much of a crowd since I went mid day on a weekday. The front desk staff was extremely polite, offered beverages and comfortable seating, got me set up quickly. Anyone who whines about the space must not spend any time in DC because EVERY building in DC is old, multi floored and has small rooms. They utilize their space well so get over it! Odeta was wonderful and gave extremely relaxing and thorough service. The groupon was for a European facial which is massage and moisturizing focused. They offered to add extraction for $5. Sure. Least painful extraction of my life! Service started on time, went full length of advertised time, and I looked and felt great after. They also gave me a %20 off coupon for my next visit. I got a groupon for 3 facials at Salon Roi early this winter, and it was really a wonderful experience for me. I got the three facials done by Diaya who is absolutely amazing. I definitely plan on going back, but I wish that I could use another groupon, because the prices are high for me. Came here last week for a facial with a Groupon I purchased. I can't remember the name of the esthetician, but it was something with a Z. It's been a while since I've had one and I was looking to have a nice relaxing experience, but I did not. Z, while very informative, was talking the whole time throughout the facial. I've never had a facial before where I left more stressed than when I came in. I was hoping for at least a few moments of silence. Educate me about my skin, but don't tell me your whole life story and make it a place for chit chat. That is the absolute last thing anyone paying money to un-wind, wants to do. So for the price (69$(Groupon) from the original 120$) it was so un-worth it for me. In the end I still tipped 20% because I felt it was the right thing to do, but I will not be back. read more

I needed to be in Adams Morgan one night and decided to get a gel manicure before an event. I chose Salon Roi based on its positive online reviews. I assume most of those were for services other than nails. My nail technician was very nice and I enjoyed speaking with her. I did notice that she worked quite slowly - this manicure took about 20 minutes longer than it does at comparable salons. I hoped this meant that she was doing a more thorough job. Instead, I got the worst gel manicure I've ever had in DC. It started to chip just 5 days later, and today - 10 days later - there are significant chips in 3 nails. A solid gel manicure should last a bare minimum of 2 weeks, and most gel manicures I've gotten last 3 - 4 weeks if they're done well. On top of that, this place charges a solid 30% more for gel manicures than competitive salons in nearby Dupont Circle. In short, I paid $45 for a gel manicure that chipped within 5 days despite taking more than an hour to complete. Can't speak to this salon's other services, but for nails? Avoid it. read more

This review is way long overdue. I have been getting my facials here since 2009 Daiva is amazing. She truly cares about your skin and she is very thorough and gives a great facial massage. She is very knowledgeable about products and skin care treatments. I live all the way in Alexandria but I still make the trip out here to see her. The whole staff is very friendly. Last month, in an effort to soothe my dry, winter skin, I purchased a Groupon for three facials at Salon Roi. I received my first facial this past week. Anastasia (sp?) did an incredible job! She listened to my concerns and tailored the products so as not to irritate my sensitive skin. She was super nice and made me feel really comfortable. After it was over, she gave me some sample packets of the gentle exfoliator she used on me, since other scrubs irritate my skin. It was such a relaxing experience and my skin felt amazing after! I'm not sure if I will be able to afford many facials there once I use up my Groupon (#lawstudentlife), but I can't wait to make my next two appointments. read more

This salon is amazing! First of all, the atmosphere was awesome- very cool building with fun decorations and friendly staff. I booked a facial with Zakiya and was not disappointed. It lasted about an hour and a half, she went in depth answering all my skincare questions, helped me refine my skincare routine and explained why I was seeing the issues that I came in to clear up. I was visiting from out of town last minute trip had never been there before and as a Cosmologist myself I am always excited to drop into new places and treat myself to a service as if I have never worked in a salon before, I have been a color specialist for over 15 years and love love love what I do for work! It's very rare that I allow anyone to do my hair let alone a place I have never been to or even reviewed, everyone one is friendly and takes the time to acknowledge you as a client! I had a great mani/Pedi as they accommodated me right then and there as a walk-in which is really kind considering it was later in the day. While I was waiting I decided to look at their boutique items and check out some product (there's never enough to buy as well as learn new product everywhere I go) This amazing young woman by the name of Elle greeted me immediately and let me know to ask with any questions I may have even though she had a client in her chair, I thanked her and took a seat waiting for the the nail tech. While I sat there I watched Elle working and could tell right away this girls got it going on! She knows hair! It just radiated radiated from her natural talent for hair. She is so knowledgable in her product and could explain in thorough detail which is impressive in itself! Many people can do hair and color but I can honesty say most stylist couldn't tell you ingredients and methods on how each product works in detail! As I said before I have been in this industry a long time it's not everyday you see someone work with confidence like this and does a BEAUTIfUL job! This is the only time I have ever liked my hair by someone else it looks and feels incredible ! I have stubborn grey and curly dry hair , I couldn't be happier! I will most defined be coming back to Washington DC at Salon Roi whenever I can to see Elle and I would recommend her to everyone with any hair type! I went with a groupon that my husband bought for me for a mani-pedi. It was difficult to find a time because apparently the salon is having more groupon requests than they can handle, and the receptionist seemed quite impatient. When I finally found a time, and went there, I was refused service because I was late for my appointment. (I had to look pretty hard for parking in the area.) There was almost nobody at the salon when I was there (1pm on a weekday), and I don't know if they were really short of people, or they just didn't want to honor the groupon. Anyway, I left without arguing with them, as the experience was horrible enough. There're lots of nail salons in the area that will be more than happy to have walk-ins, and do a great job. So I definitely won't be going back to Salon Roi. read more

Last year my Woodley Park neighborhood was large without water. I had to have my hair washed as I had a black tie affair that night. I went to Salon Roi having gone there since 1971 off and on. Discovered Roi had retired but was given to a young operator. I explained in detail how I usually wore my hair. He either didn't understand English or didn't care. Daiva is a fantastic aesthetician and provides one of the best facials in the DC area. She really understands skin, knows what to do to improve it, and provides a fantastic massage as part of the facial. The other facialists at this salon, while nice and friendly, are not very skilled. Linda doesn't do many extractions and provides a very superficial facial with no in-depth cleaning. Karen (new as of Nov 2008) gave me a facial that caused my skin to break out all over in pimples for 3 days afterwards - an awful reaction that shows she is not well trained (Aveda training). I highly recommend Daiva (she is really great at skin care), but I would not book with Linda or Karen for a facial. read more

I cant comment on the services they provided, as I was not even able to receive one. I bought a Groupon for facial, but it was rather hard to schedule an appointment. I had to wait three weeks to get an early morning slot a Saturday morning, only to be told that my appointment was rescheduled when I showed up. The receptionist was unapologetic, not to say rude. The place does not appear particularly nice from the little I saw at the reception. I requested a refund from Groupon and would not recommend my Groupon experience to anyone. read more

I got a "facial" for $50 with a coupon they sent me via email. You must have the print out with you in order to redeem it and they are serious. I had to run around looking for a printer...such a pain. Anyway, I thought Linda was very nice and the facial was relaxing, but I thought there would be more extraction. That was the main purpose of the facial for me. I went home and had to extract everything myself. Unfortunately, I don't have the right tools so it takes a lot longer and is much more difficult. I would really like to rate Salon Roi highly because all of the people there are extremely extremely nice, it is affordable ($35 for haircut! 120 for cut plus highlights), and I would like to support them. I've had my haircut there twice, by two different women, both of whom I liked a great deal and had been working there a long time. Both haircuts were okay, but I felt I had to walk them through every snip and couldn't trust them to give me a fashion forward look without a lot of coaching. I would go here for a pleasant and affordable trim, but if you are looking for high fashion styling or a new look, make sure you know EXACTLY what you want. read more

I have only gone to Salon Roi for eyebrow waxing and shaping. I am extremely picky with eyebrows and have gotten them done by many different beauticians and I can sincerely say that Daiva is one of the best in the DC area. The first time I went to her she spent 30 minutes shaping my eyebrow to perfection. She is very nice, listens to what you want, and gives very good recommendations. I used a SpaFinder gift certificate here for a 60 minute Swedish massage a few months ago. The small massage rooms are on the top floor above the hairstylists so even with the door shut and soothing music playing, you can still here all the chatter and laughter going on downstairs. Despite this distraction I still had a wonderful massage which left me feeling soooo relaxed. There aren't a lot of frills here but for a good, reasonably priced massage, I would come again. read more
