Stopped here to hangout for a bit as many other places nearby were closed. Unfortunately, the experience was a bit disappointing. The table ordered a few food items and it was a mixed experience. The blue moon we ordered was served fairly cold but felt a bit flat. The tito's tasted a bit weak as well, with too much soda and ice in comparison to the alcohol. The nachos we tried were fairly crispy though quite greasy and the salsa was very cold, which was quite a disappointing size given that this item is over $6. The monster pizza was a bit more disappointing as the flavor of cheese overall dominated over all the other ingredients. Each topping is charged separately so a 14" rolled is over $28. Given the amount of toppings and the flavor, I don't think this was a great value. The cheese and toppings also kept sliding off the crust/dough which made it difficult to eat. Overall, the experience wasn't great compared to similar types of pubs that I've been to. read more

So... I got lost trying to find my hotel, as my GPS was not working on my car and I so Sal's Pizza Pub on the right. Well, not knowing how long it would take to for my GPS would start working, I decided to loop around and see what Sal's had to offer. I arrived about 7:30pm on Monday night, and they were not real busy. OK with me and I sat at the bar and ordered a Miller Lite and took a look at the menu. Sal's has a great variety of choices from soups and salads, to chicken wings, burgers and hot sandwiches, and of course pizza. So what do you get at a place that's called Sal's Pizza Pub? The Pizza. I ordered the Sal's Pizza to-go (after having a couple of more ice cold Miller Lite's, enjoying my conversation with Sal, the bartender, and another customer at the bar). Before I talk about the pizza, let me talk a bit more about Sal's. If you are looking for a great neighborhood place, that is welcoming, that has great food, great service, and a great place, Sal's is the place. Now for the pizza. The pizza was fantastic! The Sal's Pizza has sausage, pepperoni, bacon, garlic AND jalapenos. The topping to bite ratio,(Which I think should be one of the measurement's in a true evaluation of any pizza) was perfect. The taste was wonderful, the crust perfectly baked, and with all of the ingredients on this pizza, it's one of the best Pizza's that I have had. TAKING A DIVE This low-key pub in Lombard is fairly divey but it's got some redeeming qualities. Were it not for my hosting weekly trivia here, I likely would've never heard about Sal's Pizza Pub.....they aren't doing themselves any favors in advertising with more than half of the letters in their sign being burnt out. I took over as Sporcle Live trivia host several weeks ago and come back every Tuesday night to hop on the mic and deliver some clever quips amidst a gamut of general knowledge questions that span two, hour-long rounds. Crowds are consistent (the "regulars") and are almost always amiable. Sure, there's the occasional group of rowdy asshole townies that crash the party, but this place is a bar and alcohol gets people fired up. Can't fault the customers or the venue for that. Though I *can* fault the venue for this: A medium 12" pepperoni pizza was $13.95, which I found damn expensive. It was a nice thin crust with stringy cheese and enough 'roni, but I found a multicolored hair under one of the pieces. My hair is monochromatic (brown) so I know for a fact it didn't come from my head. Not great. Tuesdays have 20oz draft beers for $5 and buckets on Sundays. The guys running the joint are a friendly bunch and this is typically a good choice for catching a Hawks game. * TL ; DR * Sal's is pretty alright. They've got decent daily specials and their pizza -- when not infiltrated by (dog?) hair -- is okay, if a tad overpriced. Yeah the bathrooms could use some modernization but as long as your expectations aren't sky high for this dive bar, you probably won't leave disappointed. Not a bad place to grab a pint and play some weekly trivia. Plus the host is a total hunk! I'd recommend Sal's on Tuesday nights between 7pm and 9pm. read more

Live walking distance to here and have been a couple times. It's got a very divey feel on the inside, but don't let that fool you. The pizza is very good (even though they cut it pie style). It's crispy and thin Chicago style with a good sauce. They have good weekday deals and trivia on Tuesday is fun. Jalapeño poppers are solid as well as the chicken tenders. I swear, I think I'm the only person who grew up in this town who had never been to this bar. Something about it terrified me for a long time... maybe that it's in a strip mall with a 7-11 and a Kenny Roger's Chicken Brooster... okay it's not Kenny Rogers, it's just Brooster's but it's more fun to add the Kenny Rogers part. The point is- I finally took the plunge and now I'm pretty pumped to go back. The staff here is super friendly and make it seem like home... A home that has 17 flat screen TVs in one room that is. They have cheap beer, cheap food, and a whole hell of a lot of karaoke. There were 2 guys hosting karaoke on the night I went and they put on quite the show. Seriously, I would pay money to watch them karaoke all night. They are hilarious! Totally a reality show kind of couple... like Pumba and Timon from the Lion King. I STILL love love love Sals! It is my favorite neighborhood bar. The food is on pint- always fresh, good flavor, perfect. I highly recommend the pizza or the wings, but if you are feeling healthy, the salads are awesome too!! My favorite thing about Sals is the friendly and welcoming staff. Every single one is genuine and outgoing. They are all very attentive, and will literally serve you with a smile. Drinks and food are cheap, and every night they have something cool going on. Even back in my school days, I wasn't the type to just copy someone else's work... so, here we go! Cool little neighborhood sports bar. Pizza is terrific Chicago-style thin crust. Sauce is tangy and flavorful without being too sweet, crust is perfect thick yet thin and crisp, and cheese is melted deliciousness. Please be aware if you do not fit their type after 9pm you will not be allowed to be in. This happened to my husband and kids last night when all they wanted to do was get a bite to eat after being out and about with friends. The friends were allowed in but he were not! I am born and raised in Chicago. I retired and moved to warm weather but, I never get pizza like Chicago pizza. I have been staying in the Lombard area and decided to try Sal's Pizza in Lombard. Been coming here for several years - mostly for Trivia Night on Tuesdays (7pm - game 1; 8pm - game 2) through Sporcle Trivia. It's always a lot of fun and 90% of the bar plays in teams so the whole place erupts with outrage/laughter together when answers are revealed. They have free pizza from 5-7pm Monday - Friday (yes, even on a Friday!) and the toppings vary. (One time it was onion and cheese...no thanks!... other times it's exactly what you want) They have drink specials, too, which are good. Service varies. Dan knows us and is friendly. One of the women gave me a hard time when I didn't order a beer (ordered a soft drink) during Free Pizza (5-7). Their wings are really good. the 50/50 sauce is the best, IMO. Monday is 50 cent wing night. It's perfectly Dive-Bar-ish, excellent for watching sports on TV (Go Sports!), and have a decent craft beer selection on rotation. read more

How can you complain about a place that saved you from a tornado? I'm not even kidding you. Allow me to set the stage... Chrissy W. and I had just left our fabulous sex & the city-esque dinner at Capital Grille not too far from Sal's when the sky started to turn dark and the wind began to pick up. By the time we were out of the Yorktown parking lot, it was pitch-black outside and pouring, and the street lights all shorted. Then, the tornado sirens began. (turns out there was a touch-down in Downers that night) I thought she was going to rip the center console out of my car. I floored it. She told me to head for Sal's. We arrived, in one piece, and promptly got her a drink. The place was empty that day, but they saved us from imminent doom. For that, we love you, Sal's! The fact that I'm rarely in there (once a quarter, maybe?) but the waiter still remembers me and my drink, is points. Karaoke is fun. The food is decent. What attracted me most about Sal's Pizza Pub, apart from my wife suggesting it, was the prevalence of four-star reviews. Does anyone give it five or three stars? Such a small variance suggests a place that hides nothing, assumes no false airs, and has so much salt-of-the-earth to it that you'd swear you were at the ocean. On a beautiful Friday, reminiscent of trips to the ocean while we lived on the east coast, my wife and infant joined me for lunch at Sal's. With our little one, late-night rollicking is a memory. Too bad; I'm a big fan of karaoke. With an option to order at the register or at our table, we went for the restaurant treatment. The number of take-out orders during our stay confirmed Sal's decision to make the offer. If a place can be trashy without being dumpy, Sal's might be it. There are many non-matching TVs around the place. The carpet looks as if many a gallon of beer has been absorbed into its fibers, yet the upholstery in the booths are not in need of duct tape. And, for some reason, the place is devoid of women during the day. For most of our meal, my wife was the only XX'er there. Oh yes, the meal. Pretty dang good, I must say. We split a buffalo chicken sandwich and a "sloppy Jose." I can't say that the chicken sandwich is that different than other sandwiches of that ilk, but the quality of the ingredients were good, as was the balance. The chicken could've been a little thicker, I suppose. The sloppy Jose was my preferred sandwich. With two types of cheese and jalapeno slices, the sandwich had a nice kick that wasn't too powerful. Even my wife, who cringes at the thought of another Manwich, liked the taco meat in its place. The bun was a bit stale, but not too much to ding the review. Ordinary fries, rings and other sides completed our meal. Nothing special, but it was nice to get two sides with each sandwich. Every town should have a place like this. Many channels on many TVs, but local station WGN got the one audio track. The server wore an untucked T-shirt and jeans, but you wouldn't expect anything else here. Sal's is exactly what you think it will be, and that's a good thing. I think I'll enjoy coming here one evening, as soon as we trust a babysitter enough. read more

A great little hole in the wall type place. Beer is cold, drinks are generously poured, food is tasty (so i hear), Karaoke is pure fun, and it happens like 3 nights/week. You really feel like you're there with a bunch of your friends. And that's mostly because a few of your friends are bound to be here partaking in the fun already. I have yet to try any of the food, but I hear it's pretty stellar. There are plenty of tv's to go around, and it never gets slam-packed in here. I can't eat pizza but my son said the double dough pepperoni was very good. The Italian beef sandwich was inedible. The beef slices were WAY too thick and so dry it was hard to swallow. The juice which I ordered on the side was a thick brown almost gravy, not Italian beef juice. Fries were too greasy so I passed on those too. I think they should stick to pizza only! read more

What took us so long? We live a short walk from Sal's and only just tried their pizza. I have no excuse. We went simple: a 16" rolled dough cheese pizza. I picked it up, and noted the interior for future visits. It's small, cozy, a local sports bar. I have no idea what their beer list is like, although there was a sign for Moose Drool, so they may have a craft brew or two. The pizza was very tasty. Cut into larger pieces, with a sturdy crust that didn't flop and wasn't too floury and had a nice taste. The cheese broke nicely and it had a good browning. There was a slight sweetness, which may have come from the sauce, which was perhaps a little skimpy -- but I don't like sauce oozing everywhere, and it blended nicely with the cheese and crust. Given their proximity, tastiness and affordability, I have to imagine Sal's is going to become a regular feature of our pizza nights. read more
