I saw that Salt & Straw had pretty high reviews so even though this is further out, we ventured to this location. It's located in a small strip which does have street parking but they were all taken. We got paid street somewhere further down the street. It wasn't too busy for a Friday night and we got to sample a couple of flavors before deciding on Coffee and Love Nuts and Sea Salt with Caramel Swirl. There were a couple of other flavors that piqued my interest (the creepy crawler) but I was too squeamish to try actual insects. The ice cream melts fairly quickly considering it was cold out but it wasn't melting to the point of being runny. The waffle cone is packed to the very bottom as well! The decorations in the store are minimal and there are a couple of seating options in the store. It gives off the vibe of being a quiet place to grab some ice cream and maybe work on other tasks. read more

It's hard not to be enamored with Ballard as a neighborhood, but also have a Salt & Straw in the mix, makes it an unbeatable combination. Like many of their locations, this version is no different: ultra popular, great customer service, and more importantly, great tasting ice cream almost all the time. Like many of their sister spots, there is no real seating here and that's by design. The idea is to get in and out as quickly as possible, but not without sampling everything that they have to offer. Seasonal varieties should be emphasized, but for fans of the brand and of their core signature flavors it never hurts to revisit them. Usually, they're most busy during the afternoon just after lunch and during the period right after dinner. Lines are pretty common, but they move quickly. They have enough staff to typically handle multiple requests at once. I was able to enjoy some of their limited edition flavors, which included birthday cakes and blackberries, strawberry pretzel salad, huckleberry, cornbread pudding, and goat cheese marionberry habanero. The latter was by far the winner. If one goes for classic flavors, let it be the pear & blue cheese, which are unconventional but outstanding together. A lot of folks enjoy the double fold vanilla as well as the sea salt with caramel ribbons. The salted malted chocolate chip cookie dough might be one of the most popular ones ever. A single scoop is $6.50, followed by a double at $8.50. Don't feel pressured to get this for children since they have their own kids scoop at $5.25. For us, I felt the person we got was 1) new and/or 2) not very accommodating to my husband's severe nut allergy (even though their website makes it seem like staff would be trained to handle this type of situation), because they said something along the lines of "you can sample, but I have to scoop your order from a pint, so I recommend you sample one flavor you're pretty confident you'll like" -- what's the point of sampling and not just committing to buying a pint, then? I understand it takes a little more time and effort to scoop samples from unopened pints, but the girls in front of us took much more time to sample multiple (5+) flavors. I tried 2 flavors and did not love either, and because I felt unwelcome to try any more, I took a chance and blindly ordered something else. While in Seattle for the Seafoodfest, we made a much-needed stop at Salt & Straw--and it did not disappoint. Even with the festival crowds, the customer service was on point. The shop itself was clean and manageable with the large crowd. Our server was incredibly kind and patient, offering sample after sample with a smile, even while the line kept growing. This is a go-to spot for me and my friends. I live a few minutes away and recently I have started to go here by myself as well. As I'm writing this, I realize that the ice cream was supposed to have butterscotch swirls - I simply assumed that the vanilla is mixed with butterscotch evenly because I didn't recognize streaks of butterscotch. Staff here are great and they are always patient with us when we want to try ice cream flavors before ordering. However, recently I was disappointed that the staff seemed to not know the flavor too well - I asked to try the matcha matcha man flavor, and I could taste something sour besides the matcha flavor. So I asked the staff if there's anything else other than matcha in it, and they told me it's a plain matcha flavor ice cream. Turns out it has tangerine juice as well as the matcha, as I discovered when I looked up the flavor online. I could figure it out myself but I wish salt & straw did a better job educating their staff on the ice cream flavors. I am always curious about the details of the food items that's offered to me so I would love to have someone explain it thoroughly. It also feels disorienting to see the staff act nice and look like they care about their job, but not know much about the product. Salt & Straw is an upscale ice-cream establishment - at times, it can be really popular and busy, so I prefer going at off-hours or on rainy or cold days. What really sets Salt & Straw apart are the flavors -- sure they have a version of mint-chocolate-chip (always a favorite of mine), but both their classic and their limited edition flavors are amazing. For example, strawberry honey balsamic with black pepper -- yum! you can count on them to have interesting and unusual flavors, often flavors you wouldn't think would go together well -- but they do! One of the best things about Salt & Straw is that they'll let you sample various flavors (a dollop on a small spoon) before choosing. You can then get a single, double or other combination. One of my favorite things to do is to get one scoop of one flavor and a second of a different flavor -- but they'll also do a "single scoop" as a "split scoop" -- half a scoop of one flavor, half of another. And of course you can get the ice cream in a cup, or in a waffle cone. They also have kids portions, pup cups, whipped cream, etc. The staff is patient and helpful. The store is well designed to handle crowds -- a little sterile with minimal seating, but in their case, that's a practical matter -- anything with more seating or atmosphere would slow down service, and they keep it moving right along -- important when there are many people in line. We don't get over to Ballard often, but Salt & Straw is a favorite stop when we do. read more

I've gone into different salt & straw locations a few times, but to be honest, I'm not a fan of all these weird flavor combinations, so I never got anything - I personally do not believe there should be any black pepper, olive oil, or really anything savory in ice cream. We went on a Wednesday night around 9:30 PM and the line was out the door and around the corner. I think we waited for about 25 minutes? It was super loud inside and mostly just standing room only. When it was our turn, they gave us the opportunity to try any flavors we wanted. I did not get any atypical flavors. I ordered the chocolate goey brownie and chose the seasonal Berry Slab pie in a waffle cone. Man, did this hit the spot! I would definitely order these flavors again, however, I don't think it's so good that I would be willing to wait in a line like that again on a weekday night for ice cream when my preferred local ice cream chain is both closer to me and quicker.
