I got a double scoop of their Strawberry Balsamic ice cream with Black Pepper and though I couldn't taste the pepper, it was a delicious rich balance of sweet and tangy and hit the spot with big chunks of strawberry. Come here for their unique flavors, the most notable of which is a 5-course Thanksgiving meal in ice cream form (which includes Roasted Peach & Sage Cornbread Stuffing, and Caramelized Turkey & Cranberry Sauce ice creams!). The line went fast, the bathroom was nice and they sell pints by the entrance. The interior could benefit from more seating and more coziness but the stools lining the windows were pleasant. How I heard of this place: Nearly a decade ago, while in Portland, friends and I found Salt & Straw and were so excited to have done so. I've been wanting to go again since and here we finally are. Type of cuisine: "We're Salt & Straw, Portland's farm-to-cone ice cream shop. Our ice cream is handmade in small-batches using only all-naturaldairy with the best local, sustainable and organic ingredients Oregon has to offer, as well as imported flavors from small,handpicked farms and producers around the world. We start with fresh, local, all-natural cream from family owned farms in the Willamette Valley. Our ice cream is made with 17% butterfat, very little air in the churn process, and a low sweetness level...so the flavors can really shine through!" Ambiance: A country home meets a circus tent with sleek and minimalist design. Oof. We live too dangerously close to this place! Salt & Straw is my guilty pleasure. I love trying their new seasonal items, but somehow I always come back to honey lavendar, strawberry balsamic, or salted malted cookie dough flavors. Lines are usually very quick, staff are efficient and cordial, and the flavors are delicious! Contrary to baskin robbins or other generic ice cream brands, I love the uniqueness and originality of Salt & straw flavors. Rather than "sweet" or "chocolatey" being the dominant flavor profile, salt & straw flavors usually have a unique blend of multiple taste profiles at the same time. For example fruity and tangy, or creamy and chocolatey, or sometimes spicy and sweet! Your mouth has a multi-sensory experience rather than 1-dimensional. Don't be afraid to ask the server to let you try everything! Salt and Straw is one of my favorites so whenever there is a location nearby, it's a must. I tried the salted malted chocolate chip cookie dough which is on the menu and I liked it. My brother and partner tried the thanksgiving series flavors which they were a fan! I love how you can try the flavors before making a selection. They allow you to sample while you're in line before you even get to the ice cream! I thought the olive oil was interesting and not bad, but did not like the strawberry balsamic black pepper because it was too sour for me. The cinnamon snickerdoodle had cookie chunks in it, and the seasonal flavor birthday cakes and blackberries was wayyy too sweet. I really liked the seasonal flavor GoNanas Banana Blueberry Crumble (8/10). The texture of the ice cream is more icy than creamy, and the iciness goes great with the blueberry jam. The honey lavender was great as well (7/10). It's more flavorful and lavender forward than the other more honey lavender ice creams I've had, but honestly I didn't know if it was the placebo of purple ice cream. This ice cream is RICH so you better be prepared to either split with someone, take it home, or don't get as much as I did because I couldn't finish it. I think I should have tried more of their savory flavors as the sweeter ones were hella sweet. Parking is available on the street or in one the lots nearby in Ballard. We walked in and to our surprise, no line! I sampled a few flavors including: Pear & Blue Cheese - kinda weird, kinda good, sweet & waxy. Wouldn't recommend ordering this one Day-Old Bread Pudding & Chocolate Ganache - chocolatey and dense. Really good, I almost ordered it Lemon Curd & Whey - tasted similar to a lemon sorbet. Not my speed but pretty good Malted Chocolate Barley Milk - heavy on the barley flavor, unique and rich chocolate flavor I ended up getting a split scoop of Salted, Malted, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough (the flavor I came in wanting) and Malted Chocolate Barley Milk. Hubby ordered 2 scoops of Salted, Malted, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. We sat inside and started eating. Hubby quickly realized he didn't have any fudge or cookie dough in his ice cream. I noticed my Salted, Malted, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough was pretty much vanilla ice cream as well. I went back up to the counter and showed the employee hubby's cup followed by my cup. He said sometimes the top of a container will be mostly plain ice cream which sounded odd to me. He gave us new cups, scoops and spoons. These looked noticeably different then the first scoops we received. This flavor wasn't as good as we remember it being at other locations but it was enjoyable. I'm not sure what happened here but to have that much inconsistency is definitely a problem. If this would have been our first time, we would have left unsatisfied and not knowing any different. Salt & Straw! Always a fave. I remember when I used to wait in ridiculously long lines for a glorious scoop of their creative ice creams. Luckily it was a cold Thursday, fairly early in the day so we had the whole shop to ourselves! The staff member who helped us was very very patient with us while we chose our flavor combo. She gave us many many samples on little spoons, explaining each one as she passed them out to us. I ended up getting 2 scoops! One was Pear & Blue Cheese, the other Strawberry Honey Balsamic w/ Black Pepper. I love a sweet & savory combo, as you can tell. I loved both of these so much! Getting chunks of pear & then savory blue cheese was a flavor explosion for the first scoop, and I loved the tangy yet distinct taste of the balsamic in the second. Total heaven! Love me some ice cream. Salt & Straw always has such unique flavors monthly and makes them work. Recently the Mushroom Muddy Buddies (with chanterelle mushrooms) and Creepy Crawly Critters (coated mealworms and crickets) for September and October have seemed very interesting. It's definitely pricey though. I personally enjoy this location more than others for various reasons including fair sample sizes so you can actually get a taste of any ice cream flavor (other locations are smaller so it's harder to judge) and openly advertising split scoops. This location also seems to have chocolate waffle cones, at least when I went. Haven't had that at other locations so that was a nice surprise as well. Highly recommend a split scoop (add 50 cents to a single scoop) as you get 3/4 of a full scoop for two flavors. It's a great way to try the unique flavors Salt & Straw has to offer. Maple & Bacon Streusel is probably my favorite flavor during the early fall months when it's on rotation. Maple bacon bars are pretty good and if you like them, imagine them in ice cream form. Delicious. The Great Candycopia had a great ice cream base (butterscotch ice cream with a toffee) and I liked the candies, but together I'm not a fan. If you're a M&M McFlurry type of person, this flavor is for you though. There's a nice crunch to the solid chocolate pieces but I like softer bits in my ice cream. Jack o' Lantern Pumpkin Bread was my pick of choice this last visit. Like mentioned above, I like softer bits and the pumpkin bread was delightful to have embedded in the ice cream. read more

It's been a while since I've been to Salt & Straw, but my family and I decided to stop by this sunny afternoon after hitting up the Sunday Farmer's Market. Salt & Straw brought back their Campfire series this month- s'mores, buttermilk pancakes & eggs, & huckleberry cornbread. I remember this series from last year and remember loving the cornbread flavor (last year was cornbread and nettle though). At 1:30pm, there was a small line of about maybe 4-5 groups ahead of us. There are social distance markings on the ground which people were following. Inside, there were also red boxes taped on the floor to promote social distancing when ordering and paying. We decided to share a double scoop of huckleberry cornbread and pear & blue cheese (my dad's favorite which is now a classic flavor!) in a cup. The huckleberry was different; it had large pieces of cornbread with a sweet berry and coconut flavored base. I enjoyed the texture and the taste. The pear and blue cheese had A LOT of sweet, caramelized pear, but it unfortunately lacked the blue cheese flavor this time around... we were pretty disappointed by this batch. In terms of safety, service and payment are both no contact and there are plastic barriers between customers and servers. Masks are required and there is no sampling, public restroom use, or in-dining seating available at this time. There was also an employee managing the lines to direct people to the different social distance boxes on the ground and to make sure that people respected social distance spacing indoors and outdoors. We've heard so much about Salt & Straw that when we found ourselves in Ballard we had to stop by. We tried the Freckled Mint TCHO-colate Chip and it was so good. The mint was not overpowering and my kiddo, who is an ice cream connoisseur couldn't even tell that it wasn't made from cream like the ice cream they are used to. The staff was super friendly and sweet. They offered our pup a pup cone--a bag of sugar cone pieces that he happily munched down. Treats for all! However, today at this location I'm disappointed to say I had a somewhat unfriendly server. He gave unusually stingy sample spoons and ice cream scoops to me and my friend. I normally share the samples they give with my friend because I feel bad when I ask for more than a couple, and these were barely enough to even call a bite. Also, I've come here enough to know what their scoop sizes should look like. This was VERY noticeably smaller. I can't help but wonder if he was judging me on how I was dressed/how I looked and assumed I wouldn't tip or something. Dear Salt & Straw, I love you. And most of all i LOVE the birthday cake blackberry flavor this season. It is not so often you think about an ice cream flavor for 10 years.. but let me tell you that when I found this flavor again after trying it absolutely forever ago, I was almost brought to tears. I have been to this location before, but they have seen me about 5 times in the last 2 weeks. Oops. The staff is usually friendly here, and they are generous and patient if you want to try 200 flavors. Came here because I had never had Salt & Straw (S&S) before (even though they have locations in OR and the Bay Area), and really wanted to try their seasonal offerings (we came around Halloween time!). After reviewing the online menu, I was definitely intrigued by all the unique flavors S&S had going for them! We arrived at around 8 or 9pm on a cold fall night - not the ideal time for ice cream, but who cares! The inside was dimly lit for an ice cream shop and there were several large groups inside enjoying their frozen treats. The layout of the store is a little strange as there is a large wall compiled of purchasable swag, and then tucked in the corner is the register and ice cream displays. We were helped by a nice gentleman who gave me so many samples, I almost got full off of them lol Anyways, I was able to sample a majority of the Halloween flavors. I also sampled a tiny spoon of the Beecher's cheese with peppercorn toffee and eventually ordered that in a cup. Whoa, this scoop was decadent! It was so rich, I had a little trouble finishing my kid-sized cup... but it was SO good. I powered through even though my tummy was saying "no more pls." Definitely a place to check out if you're looking to find more unique ice cream flavorings using quality ingredients beside the traditional cookie dough or mint chip. read more
