If you order take out from this place be prepared to be nickeled and dimed. We decided to order take out one night and when I looked at the receipt it had a "take out charge" of $2. When I asked the server what this charge was, he said it's a charge to pay for the Styrofoam containers and it's based on the amount of the bill, our total was $41. What!? You're going to charge me for take out on top of your overpriced, small portion meal!? I'll never go back again. Now I can see why mid-priced restaurants are hurting. read more

Me and my family just went to Salt Grass off 1604 and Bandera and it was the worst possible customer service ever and we didn't even get a chance to be seated. We walked in and the hostess told us 30-40 minutes, ok no problem that's expected its a Saturday night, right? No not the case. After waiting 30 minutes other families we're walking in and being seated right away so after seeing three other parties be seated my husband kindly asked the hostess how much longer and why other parties were being seated before us since we had already been waiting 30 minutes. A manager, by the name of Tiffany, came to us about 2 minutes later asking what the problem was and we explained exactly what was going on and that we wanted to be seated just like everyone else that was walking in and not having any wait at all. She continued to tell us that they had no tables available and that we were up next, well my husband walked over with the manager and showed her two tables available that would sit a family of 5, she then came back with that we could not sit there because it was technically a table of 4 and if she added another chair it would be in the Isle and it would be a fire hazard!!! Well then please explain why the family of five that just left was sitting there and it was not a hazard with them??? Manager had nothing to say ,but " you were told your wait was 40 minutes and you still have 10 minutes to wait before you are seated." So your telling me I have to wait the entire 40 minutes before we get seated but all the other parties coming in can be seated right away??? Tiffany handled that so unprofessionally and extremely rude. She would not seat us and continued to tell is we had to wait our 40 minutes. Needless to say we left and went to another Steakhouse. Would not recommend you go there and recommend you do not speak with Tiffany as she does not know what customer service is. And to Saltgrass, please consider another manager because Tiffany is hurting your business. read more

The family and I went to Saltgrass Steakhouse in Helotes for dinner tonight, sat in a booth in the bar area thinking we'd get faster service. Wrong! It took an hour to get our food and it was lukewarm. The waitress showed no interest in us, nor did she offer more bread or let us know our food would be ready soon. She definitely had great customer service to the customers sitting in the booth in front of us and behind us! Saltgrass is one of my favorite places to eat, however we will not return to this location. There are other steakhouses that offer better customer service and hotter food. I just want you to know how whomever is responsible for ruining me and my husbands 41st Anniversary. We went there thinking we were going to have a great steak dinner and go home and have a great evening together. The waitress we had was great. She gave us our bread, our tea and took our order. Everything was running smoothly. So we got our salads and after that, everything went into slow mode. It took a very long time to get our meal. I got the Maudeens filet. It was kind of warm and the butter was having a hard time melting. The fries were hot.but my husband's prime rib was cold and the butter would not melt and his sweet baked potato was warm. Now you know when you get those taters, they are hot. So the manager I assume came and took his plate and about 5 minutes later presented him with the same plate except it looked like they popped it in the microwave and the prime rib was grey. Looked really gross. So I told him not to eat it and I gave him what was left of my steak. The waitress apologized and the manager took the prime rib off of the bill. Our whole evening was ruined. My husband felt like it was his fault for taking me there. I just want the person who reads this that this is our 41st Anny and at our age and bad health, we don't know how many more we have to celebrate. And when you have a bill of $45 you can't do this very often. Thank you for whoever reads this. read more

To be honest I would give this Saltgrass zero stars if I had the choice. The service was very very poor. Our waiter (Mike) was otherwise clueless. When I solicited the Manager for assistance, he was as unhelpful as the waiter. The food was average and not the worth the money--better off going to the Outback or Roadhouse. My steak was cooked wrong and had the wrong side...3 of the 4 steaks at our table were wrong but my family just decided to eat them anyway. I had to send mine back. My family had finished eating before my new steak finally came out...I just send that one back and had them take it off the bill. The waiter never came over to ask how the food was...he had no clue I had even sent my steak back. The manager had no idea either. The whole experience was bad. I will definitely not eat at that Saltgrass and most likely not any. I would recommend you don't either...not worth your money or time. read more

My husband and I went here on Friday, July 12th around 7pm. It was our first night out without our daughter in awhile so we were looking forward to having dinner here. We waited about 15 min for a table which was fine. We ordered drinks and it took about 20 minutes to get them. During that time the waiter, I think his name was Brandon came by and asked if we wanted something else to drink in the meantime. I said I'll take a club soda with lemon and she said ok. He never came back with my club soda but we got our drinks about 10 minutes later. He said he didn't bring the club soda because he had to get it from the bar and they would charge me for it. I thought this was ridiculous but ok. When we finally got our dinner, I had ordered the chicken fried steak and mash. I saw the waiter next to our table staring at us and as soon as I took my first bite he asked how it was. I said ok. But after a few more bites I realized the steak had a bad taste like maybe the oil they used was really old. So I didn't eat my dinner. I saw the manager and told him about it and he asked if I wanted another one I said no. He never even apologized for it. Then the server brought our check out which came to $80, considering how bad everything was I was disappointed that no one even took my meal off my check. So I was going to ask the server to come my meal and he brought me a new check which showed they took off $10...mind you my meal was $16.99. I will never go back to this location. We have been to the I-10 location and it was wonderful. Bandera Helotes location was garbage. They don't care about the customer and their staff needs training even management. read more

This is a really good steakhouse!! The food is excellent, prepared as it should be. The queso fresco appetizer (WITH brisket) to the prime rib to the smoked pork chop there was not one bad thing! The sweet potato fries felt frozen but were still good. My biggest compliment is the service. The staff was very attentive to details and made sure that we were well taken care of. Fast service and very friendly staff. I had the Chicken Laredo with French onion and it was delicious! Cooked perfectly and very flavorful. We also had the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes. It was huge! I don't like chicken fried steak but my bf said it was good. The mashed potatoes were way too garlicky tho. Other than that, everything was good. read more

My aunts $35 steak was cold couldn't even eat it because the butter had already dried up on top of the steak. If I only had to rate the food I would give them 5 stars, BUT!!! THE SERVICE WAS HORRIBLE!!! We had a party of 10 so we had two servers. The female was was ok but the male seemed like he was overwhelmed from the drink orders. Ordering the food was pretty seamless and besides eating the rest of dining experience was an adventure. It took about 30 or so minutes for the food to start coming out, which wasn't a problem because we were talking but the salads were wrong either because it was the wrong dressing or they brought out a Caesar salad and it should've been a garden. Now on to the main course. They brought out the first six plates some were missing sides others were missing mushrooms on their steaks (easy fixes) then we hear a loud crash. Someone at the table said "I bet that's the rest of the food". A few minutes later the male waiter comes out and said "I have bad news, we dropped the rest of your plates and have to recook them". Turns out the completely forgot on of the orders so we had one person eating when everyone else was finished. We told them who was on what check and it took 45 minutes to get the first round of checks but they were wrong, so we corrected it and it took another 45 to get them back, they next two rounds were wrong. Going on a Saturday evening, you run the risk of painfully slow service at the bar and the restaurant part. Drinks almost never came at the bar. Sad. Later after being seated at a table with my party, I ordered the Chicken Austin last Saturday evening. All I got was a two pieces of grilled chicken with one piece of wilted spinach on top. Yes, only one. Then I asked again for what I actually ordered. They could have had the courtesy to say they were out or did not have any more of the ingredients to make it, but they hedged. I got their lemon sauce in the tiniest side cup ever made with a couple of more of the leafs of spinach and about half a shaker of salt dumped in. The recipe also said artichoke hearts. I got zero. What I did get was a few leafs of what I'm guessing may have been artichokes, not sure, but certainly not artichoke hearts by any stretch. They we so over battered and fried. It was far more greasy crust than a hint of whatever the leaf was. I would have happily given a higher rating if it wasn't for the fact that they were messing around even after I protested. They could have comped it of offered something different in the fist place. They just hovered hoping I'd appreciate this adjusted mistake. I didn't, but wasn't willing to sit through another strikeout. I just scraped off the crappy topping and ate the plain chicken. If this is how this particular Saltgrass prepares Chicken Austin, I suggest you avoid it. They are getting one star because someone in my party did love their steak. read more

We came in for a celebratory dinner after finally finding a house to put an offer on (yay!). Service is exemplary here. The young man who waited on us repeatedly said anything we wanted he would make it happen... even told us how they have a customer come in who wants mountain dew (which they don't serve) and he runs across to the gas station to buy a bottle for him. I thought that was awesome. The food was top notch... steaks were flavorful and well cooked, same for the side dishes. I got the Oscar topping on mine, crab meat and asparagus in a buttery creamy sauce... which I highly recommend. Definitely one of the best steak spots in my opinion. read more

My husband and I wanted a steak for lunch and he recommended Saltgrass. While the waiter was prompt in coming to our table it all went down hill from there. After placing our order it was over 1.5 hours before our steaks arrived. Five other tables received their food and finished before ours was even received. My daughters hamburger was just a bun and meat...which she said was dry and didn't taste good. The steaks were good but for the amount of time it took we were completely over our experience by the time the food finally came. Even 2nd drink order took half hour which our waiter blamed the bartender...who...never received the order (I watched him put it into the system myself). I don't recommend if you are in any kind of hurry or are hungry! read more

I arrived to the restaurant around 5pm on Friday, thinking I could beat the dinner rush. We waited for over an hour for just for our appetizer to arrive to our table. About a half hour later our salads and soup came to the table. However, it turned out to be another table's order. After nearly two hours of waiting for my family's order of two Steak and Shrimp meals, a bowl of Bake Potato Soup, and Rattlers. I finally asked our waiter, what the hold up was. He informed me that there were still three more orders ahead of ours. I found this odd since most of the tables around us were being seated and served in a more timely manure. I told our waiter that I wanted my meal bagged up as soon as possible. Our waiter apologized for the staff not bring their "A" game tonight. I had enough of the service and I was ready to go. I found it unprofessional that a manager did not come to our table to remedy this issue. I understand that this Saltgrass Steakhouse is fairly new, but for the amount of money that was spent for my family's meal, I was extremely disappointed in the professionalism of the staff of this restaurant. This will be the first and last time I eat there. read more

I've been here several times now, and the previous experiences were fantastic. The steak was good, and the service was even better. Unfortunately, on July 1st we chose to bring our out of town guests to what we thought was going to be an excellent Texas dinner. We were very wrong. Apparently Salt Grass had started 3 new cooks this particular night, and it took over an hour to get our food. Our waitress was wonderful and kept us updated. She even let us know that one of the new cooks had walked out. This kept us happy enough to wait because we all know things can go wrong. The worst part, however, was when my medium steak came to me rare. It was actually cold and purple in the middle. All four of the steaks in our party were undercooked, but mine was the worst. Of course, I informed the manager, Jacob, and he was helpful and took it back. Instead of bringing out a new steak, he brought me back my previously chopped in to and steak piece that had been thrown back on the grill and plopped new butter on it. It was like a rubber boot and obviously once the steak has been off the grill for a bit and cut into, you can't just salvage it. I wasn't paying $26 for that. Jacob clearly didn't see what the issue was, and did not really care about the fact that our whole order was screwed up and we had waited forever and then the steaks were wrong. We spent two hours on a horrible meal and then he only discounted mine and my husband's steak, even though our other party stated that their food was not what we had expected. We will not be back to this location, and I'd advise others to wait until the cook problem is resolved unless you want to pay for ruined meat. read more

This particular Saltgrass opened recently, replacing Buffalo Wild Wings (I believe). Figured we'd try it out after going to a couple Mexican Restaurants that were absolutely packed. Very satisfied! We only waited about a half hour, pretty good considering it was 7 pm on a Friday. While waiting, a couple different servers asked if we would like any drinks, and apologized for our wait. After being seated, we ordered our drinks, as well as an appetizer; the Crab Stack. Very tasty, albeit a bit pricey at $12.00. Our margaritas and Texas Tea were very good, also. My wife ordered a bacon wrapped shrimp dish for her entree, I stuck with Pat's Ribeye; both dishes were really good. Our server was great...very responsive considering how busy he was. He also mentioned how he liked substituting the regular butter with sweet potato butter with the bread...he even got us some and it was excellent. We'll order the sweet potato butter from now on. I'm pretty stingy with $$, but I didn't really mind the close-to $100 bill as we thought the food and service was above average. read more

Wow, where to begin. I never leave bad reviews, I just never go back. But this is the first time my night has been ruined by a restaurant. Went on a Friday, and seating was fast. Started with crab cakes, and they were great. Then it started going bad. The "waiter" Brandon, was nowhere to be found after taking the order. He took our order at 7:45, but the bill states that it wasn't entered until 8:11. That is probably why three tables that were sat after us were finished before we got our food. The salad was soggy, some of the lettuce and tomatoes had been frozen and were a mess. Because our food took 45+ minutes, I needed a refill. Brandon took the glass, but was nowhere to be found for 25 minutes. I had to ask another server for a refill and bread. The steak temperatures were way off. The bone in ribeye was still raw. It actually had thick blood in it - not just the regular myoglobin meat juice. My wife sent hers back to get brought up to temperature, but I had no desire to finish what they attempted to serve me. We wound up taking hers home, just to get out of there. It was worse than Golden Corral. Worst $100 I have ever spent. read more

This location has become less than ideal after a few years of consistently high quality food and atmosphere. Last few visits steaks were gristly, shaved parm is gone from salads replaced with pizza packet "sprinkled" grated cheese some of the time, no more coconut shrimp nor beef veg soup, and management seems to have cut back on wait staff who do put in the effort to keep visitors happy, but are clearly at the stressed out and rushed level. Most diners are crowded into main dining room, so it's always noisy now and hard to hear across the table with customers and staff buzzing up and down the isles. Don't expect the relaxed and quiet atmosphere as in the beginning years when diners were spread out between the 3 dining rooms. Also parents are allowing their kids to be just as loud as if they were at McDonald's and lil ones who cry and are fussy are ignored instead of taken outside to be calmed down. All this makes for a less than ideal dining experience at what used to be the nicest restaurant in the area. We have started going down 1604 to Longhorn because it offers us what Saltgrass used to provide us. read more
