I was not impressed with saltgrass. The food was absolutely fantastic, that's why I'm giving 2 starts instead of just one, but the service was absolutely horrible. It took 10 minutes to get out drinks. Half of which were missing when they first came out. When I asked what came on one of their side salads the server was absolutely clueless. I'm not saying that they need to know every detail of every item, but at least what is on a side salad. After that when we got our food some of our parties food was missing and wasn't brought out until we were all finished our meal, so those couple people had to eat fast and without us. Then it took another 20 minutes to get our checks, which weren't split correctly. Over all the food was great but service could of been way better. My experience with the management here was comical, infuriating, and left me feeling sorry for staff that has to work for such incompetent management. I purchased a $25 Landrys Select Club membership several months ago and was told I would receive $25 off on my next visit as well as $25 off on my birthday, which was tonight. So we go expecting $50 off of our ticket. AFTER our meal had been served and eaten, the manager attempted to explain that our card was not registered and didn't even show up in their system. I showed him the receipt where I had paid for it originally that I kept with the card. He said "I'm sorry, there's nothing I can do. I won't be able to give you your $50 off." After several minutes of arguing he leaves and comes back giving me discounts that totaled $28, but charged me another $25 for a new card because the old one wouldn't work!!!! So he says that "$3 off is all I can do." At this point I became extremely upset and got up from the table to walk away from him and the other patrons before causing a bigger scene than what had already occurred. He followed my family to the front telling other staff in his little mic to "call the police because they are walking out without paying"!!!! I asked for my waiter, paid he bill, and began talking to another manager that did his best to handle the situation. Still, my card was charged the full amount and he said that it wouldn't be, even when I showed him via text from my bank that my card had already been charged. Anyway....needless to say I will NEVER step foot here again, and do everything I can to discourage others from the possibilities of this same treatment. read more

Went last night to have dinner with my husband. The two of us were seated almost immediately. The establishment was nicely decorated and clean. It was not busy and the restaurant was not crowded. The waitstaff were friendly. However, once seated it took about 15 minutes before our server greeted us and took our drink order. Since it had taken so long for our server to come over we already had our meal order also. Somehow the napkin that is used to place drinks on dropped to the floor, I picked it up and placed it upside down on the table. Our server thanked me for picking it up but did not replace it and even placed my drink on it when my drink finally came out. This is nasty and I promptly moved my drink.My husband had the 16 Oz Prime Rib medium rare with Oscar added and I had the Oscar Filet medium well. Our drinks took awhile to come out also, for which our server apologized.My husband order a Shiner Bock draft which he said was excellent I had the Tropical Sangria which lacked flavor except for pineapple, furthermore I could not taste or feel that I was even drinking a drink that contained alcohol. I had my husband taste it and he agreed it did seem as though it lacked alcohol. Our salads came and even though I requested that my dressing be put on the side it was already on my salad. I was beyond hungry by now and figured it would take another 30 minutes to get my salad if I sent it back. Our main course finally arrived after being in Saltgrass for over an hour. My husband loved his Prime rib, the Oscar is a must for him now (his words). My steak was overcooked but still good. I also loved the Oscar topping. My baked potato was good but on the small size. As we were finishing I realized that the staff seemed to be more interested in doing their closing chores than taking care of the customers, as they were sweeping and wiping down the banister outside etc. Our sever did not offer to refill our water or offer more bread when our meal finally came. She was however prompt with bringing our check. If they could have gotten our food out as fast things would have been better. She was not rude, just not very attentive. She was polite and even offered to box our leftovers up for me. I enjoy Saltgrass but this one needs to work on customer service and bar. Their food is some of the best I have had at a Saltgrass. If you want to take a chance on service and have 2 hours to spare then this is a good spot to eat. read more

Unfortunately, although the food may be good, DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU ARE IN A HURRY. They do not take real reservations, although they say they do. It's just a glorified wait list. 30+ minutes AFTER OUR RESERVATION TIME, they said they were waiting for our table to clear out. The previous guests were clearly done, with their food in to-go boxes, but they were just camping out at the table. Other restaurants with half a brain will tell the table that their table is reserved at X time and they need to clear it for the next party. But not this head-up-the-butt stupid management. I specifically told the manager they needed to tell the existing table that this table is reserved and overdue. But management simply said "We cannot do that". Bullshit! Of course they CAN. They just don't have enough sense to do it. The other guests are already finished. They already paid. It's not like the management is going to piss them off and risk them not paying. But instead, they piss off the next potential party of 8 and threw that business opportunity away. Really stupid. Don't waste your money on stupid! We tried the chicken fried steak at 3 other restaurants and were prepared to be disappointed again, but this time it was very good! Our waitress, Skye, was great! My order was perfect. I waited 30 minutes after odering my food when I was the only person there. My chopped steak with grilled onions tomatoes and cheese was cooked to perfection but the grilled onions were all but missing. I sent it back to add the onions and it came back over cooked. It was lunch time so I paid extra for the "loaded" baked potato. The cheese bacon and chives were only a garnish. The manager's comment was "that's the way we do it" I took 3 bites of my food and left. I say I paid extra but the manager comped my meal. I tipped the bartender $10 anyway. I chose this restaurant because as a picky eater, I thought it would be the safest, but I was unsatisfied. I ordered takeout bc I had been traveling all day and just wanted to eat in the comfort of my hotel which was in the same area of the restaurant. I ordered the sauce trio. Queso was great! However, the salsa tasted like warm marinara. Very unappetizing. I also ordered the fried shrimp. I couldn't finish it. It just didn't taste fresh. While I waited for my food, I had a glass of wine but it tasted kind of funky. I didn't mention anything to my bartender bc service was great and I didn't have the energy to complain too much. Service is great here, but I would have been better off ordering food from a fast food restaurant or just my hotel. Maybe the steaks are a better option being that it's a steakhouse. This was our first visit and we brought an out of state guest with us thinking this would be a delightful meal. Unfortunately not. Derek was our waiter, polite young man but could benefit from additional training. At the order of drinks he said he'll be right out with bread and apologized but it was just coming out of the oven. Received our drinks, then our appetizer. 1/2 way through our app I asked about the bread and he had to go 'check on it'. Finally bread came out with our salads. No complaints on the soup or salads. When Derek came back to collect our dishes from first course he assured us that our meals would be coming right out. We sat and waited 15 mins, no food yet, all the while he tended to the other tables. He finally came over puzzled that our meals were not out yet and went to check....he came back and said "they are plating your food right now"....we waited an additional 10+ mins(that's gotta be a record for the slowest plating ever) and then our food came out. My husband ordered 20oz prime rib, I ordered tenderloin medallions and our guest ordered filet. The prime rib was not cooked as requested (medium-well) and matter a fact only cooked on 1 side! The middle was bloody/rare. Next my hubby ordered fries and it came out with onion rings! So now onto my meal....medallions. The flavor was not appetizing at all and the meat was luke warm at best. At least our guest enjoyed his meal (or he didn't want to complain). So I brought these concerns up to Derek and his response was lackluster....all he said about the mix up on my hubby's side was 'oh' and then with my cool meat he said 'I know you probably want to keep your plate cause you've been waiting so long but I can have the kitchen warm it up for you'. Um no, It took us 30 mins to receive this mess. Although some lady came over and asked if she could make it right by warming the plate or getting another medallion but I personally do not return food to the kitchen for fixing or correction because I've observed first hand some of the behind the scenes antics and honestly after the amount of time they had to prepare our meals during a slow lunch shift didn't give me any confidence it would get better. Lastly, he brings a carafe of tea and there was some sort of foreign thing floating in it....gross....just overall gross and disappointing. I love Saltgrass. We made monthly trips down to Austin just to eat there before this one opened. I always order a medium well steak. This one looked pathetic. Very thin cut, looked like someone beat it with a hammer. Manager told me that on medium well and we'll done steaks they try and use thinner cuts. My steak was literally half the thickness of everyone else at the table. Was really well well done, tough as a brick. No apologies, no nothing. The appetizer and salad were good, but I've had steaks at Applebee's for half the price that were twice as good as this one. read more

This is the third time I've visited this establishment in Waco. I am sad to say that unlike other branches in other cities, the service and quality of meals are far inferior. Tonight was busy, but not packed. For the third time, any steak, (two New York strips and a T-bone)were all ordered medium well. Apparently this means well done as the amount of pink in any of those cuts was non-existant on any of my visits. Our server's name was Melinda, and while I'm guessing she was new, one could still have expected a higher quality of service as the business was not over run, but was busy. While she did manage to get us our orders, her after order service and aspect was not well received. When I re-ordered chives, I never received them. When she took the tea vessel from the table, it never reappeared. When she asked about to go boxes and I was dismissive of the lack of chives, she looked startled, muttered, "I'm sorry," and never offered to try and fix any of the issues. In fairness, after her initial fly by, we only saw her when she was spiriting items away. During the duration of the meal her one strong point seemed to be taking things away. Not sure why we couldn't get anything new brought to the table after that, but perhaps there is a reason. I'll wait for someone else to spot it. I did note, with sadness approaching the amount of butter, but obviously not chives, heaped on the steak and potato, that she made the check vanish in a blink when it came time to pay the check. Should she, or anyone from the Waco branch read this, rest assured that I will vote with my money in the future. Heitmiller's here we come. In short, my feelings about Saltgrass are: if you're in the mood for steak, prepare for a middle-of-the-road experience. A typical restaurant "chain" steakhouse. Not much different to offer than other Waco area steakhouses. Pros: Steaks are, maybe, a little better than some other restaurants in the area. Mashed potatoes were good. Salads fine. Cons: Service has not really been that great on the two occasions I have eaten here. Also, while I recognize this to be a particularly subjective part of my review, I don't care much for the atmosphere here. I don't mind (even expect) a louder restaurant for burgers, barbecue or burritos. For a steakhouse, I'm usually looking to pay a bit extra but to have an ambience conducive to relaxed conversation. I think there are a few better options in the Waco area if someone has similar expectations of a steakhouse. In sum, while I had higher expectations, I will probably end up eating here again sometime. read more

We tried this place again recently after a terrible experience shortly after it opened. The food this time around was very good. The drinks were good, too. The reason I gave it three stars was because the food comes out too fast. Our drinks, appetizer and salads came out at the same time. Then the entrees came out shortly after- we had to dump our salads on our entree plates to make room on the table. We weren't halfway through our entree when the server brought the check. We felt so rushed! There were plenty of tables so there wasn't a wait to be seated. We were out to enjoy a kid-free evening and ordered a few courses of food to enjoy slowly. My boyfriend and I went for our anniversary on a Monday night. After ordering, we were immediately served bread and it was delicious. Our Caesar salads came out quickly, and it was delicious as well- the croutons were crunchy and the dressing was not overwhelming. Three minutes later, our Chuck Wagon Cheese Fries appetizer came out. The potatoes were nice and crunchy with the perfect blend of cheeses and bacon on top. Not a huge fan of the sour cream on top though. Also was confused about it being called fries when it was chunks of potatoes. Not even half way through our appetizer, the steaks came out! Service felt a little rushed at that point- we hadn't even been in the restaurant for 20 minutes and our meal was already nearing the end! My boyfriend got the Pat's ribeye and asked for it to be medium rare. It was definitely more rare than it being a nice inbetween. However, he didn't really mind and thought that the seasoning on the steak was perfectly balanced- not too salty yet still flavorful. I ordered the New York Strip and asked for it to be medium well. It was too pink for my taste but I didn't mind it at all- also enjoyed the seasoning quite a bit. My boyfriend finished before me and the waiter immediately came to take his plate but asked to box up the fries when I wasn't even finished with my meal. That felt weird to us. After the waiter boxed up the fries he asked if we wanted to look at the dessert menu...while I was still cutting into my steak. I did NOT like that, wasn't even done with my meal and you're asking about dessert already? It felt like he was really rushing us at that point. We finished our meal within 45 minutes of being in the restaurant. Would have really like that our meal wasn't so rush and every thing came within minutes of each other, but the food is pretty good. read more

I ordered a chicken Caesar to go which I was told would take 15 minutes. After waiting 40 minutes they bring me a salad and say "oh by the way" we ran out of Romaine lettuce....really!!! the waiter at the bar (she) cared less and didn't provide any other solution besides "do you want it or not"? PS - they forgot to give me a spoon for the soup......nice job Saltgrass........it gets better, the also forgot to put in the Caesar dressing.......$22.00 down the drain.......don't waste your time go somewhere else and enjoy a real meal. read more

Tonight was my first and last visit. I ordered the filet Oscar. The temperature of the food was tepid. I ordered the "loaded" mashed potatoes and requested no bacon or chives... it arrived with both. I wish I had asked the price of the chocolate cake before ordering... $8.99... seriously, so not worth the price. Horrible Management, the waiter was great but after a request to management our whole evening was spoiled. The manager, Justin Simmons should be thrown in the deep fryer. He degraded one of the people in my group and arrogantly told us to enjoy our dinner after we had already finished. I will never eat there again and I will certainly tell everyone I know not to go there.
