However, I'll still go 5 stars for the overall ambience, thee ultra-local "home grown" atmosphere and the old-school demeanor of the staff. Cash or check only. No tickets given or needed. After my leisurely lunch, as I approached the cashier, I mentioned "Philly cheese" and he insantly replies, "and fries and cola, $17." Loved that moment, and also loved the little quips of the grill chef when someone was slow to pick up an order like "got two birds about to fly away," and so on. Classic Burger Joint! This may be one of the oldest locally owned restaurants in Knoxville! And I see why! We got there when they opened on a weekday to beat the crowds. First thing... this is cash only! Second, you order up front, then you find a table and then they yell out your name or something else about you (be careful what you say about yourself at the counter when you order) to come pick it up! Then after you eat you pay when you leave! I got a Cheese Steak, which was pretty good. And others got the Vol Burger. Next time that's what I'm going to get. My spouse ordered the popular tasty Vol Burger which is a good deal for $10.99 as it comes with cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, a pickle and French fries at no extra charge. Piled high on a brown bun with corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Thousand island dressing, my Reuben for $9.99 was equally tasty. It also came with a pickle spear. Sodas cost $2.99 each. A small sign posted on the window reads Cash and Checks Only, so that's the drawback especially when a majority of folks carry only debit and credit cards. However, a lone ATM sits inside the front door for those without "green" in their wallets. The atmosphere is casual with plenty of seating in orange "booths," and the walls are filled with UT memorabilia and several tvs that broadcast college sports. read more

We had lunch here while visiting our daughter and her family in Knoxville. I had read the reviews and was so excited to give them a try. Can I just say, I now only want to dine here when in Knox!!? They make excellent food. Everything was so delicious. But it's the atmosphere and the people who make this place shine. I have no idea who the older man was who took our order but he immediately was so friendly and warm and welcoming. We are from CO and he grabbed details from us that he turned into personable moments. He called us up to get our food as "rocky mountain high". You pay at the end and he chatted with us again. I first experienced Sam & Andy's as a freshman at UT in 1984. I was so sad when it closed on "The Strip" but the west location is just as good! Over the past year or so, I became a frequent customer, as my terminally ill brother loved nothing more than a Roast Beef & Provolone steamed sandwich. And of course, if I was stopping by for my brother, I had to get something for myself as well LOL! If you're eating in, Sam & Andy's feels like a typical diner, and it's very busy at lunch. There's lots of noise as people place orders, pick up orders, etc. while the workers are shouting instructions to each other. If you're in Farragut, stop by and enjoy a steamed deli sandwich! I do love Sam and Andy's and deeply miss the Cumberland Avenue location. The food is very even though the sandwiches may not be as big as college days in the 80's. The guys working there a fast and friendly and the beers are always cold. I really enjoy seeing all the old photos in the walls and reminiscing about high school sport teams and college days. I have lived in Knoxville for 8 years now. I can't believe I I just found this place. This little dinner is Best kept secret. From the atmosphere in the friendly staff members I can't believe this place doesn't have a line around the door. Truly a family diner because they know almost everybody walking on the door. They're known for their cheeseburgers but I decided to get a rib eye sandwich made to order. So big I have to take half of it with me. Best thing I tasted in a long time so good. My daughter had chicken fingers and they were just as good as the ribeye. When my daughter was done with her dinner the manager or owner I'm not sure gave my daughter a candy bar. The original Sam & Andy's moved from the 'Strip' to Kingston Pike west between Lovell Road and Concord Road. They brough with them the atmosphere, wonderful customer service, and food that is excellent. My favorite is the Open Face Roast Beef Sandwich. While I sat down to eat, the guy next to me said, "That looks great, what did you order?" So, you get not only my recommendation, but the unsolicited opinion of another patron in the restaurant. They have subs, burgers, fries, Reubens, and a whole lot of other stuff including the original 'Roman Room.' My sandwich was about $7.00 total. Very disappointing. I went in on my day off from work to relax and enjoy a nice meal. As I walked in this 1980s rendition of a restaurant I was a little nervous. A guy (I guess the owner was yelling over a loud speaker to come get your food. So I ordered, waited and got my food. It was garbage. Burger tasted like it had been back there for an hour. Ate here yesterday afternoon. I ordered the phlli cheese steak and cheese with a side of fries. My girlfriend ordered the vol burger with fries. They offer mostly deli sandwiches along with some Italian dishes. Great old school deli atmosphere. Low lighting and lots of black and white pictures on the walls. You can tell they get a lot of regulars. This isn't health food but it is very filling and very tasty. My fries were thick cut with the skin and were made fresh to order. This is one of my favorite sandwich/burger places in Knoxville and easily my favorite in the Farragut area. It's tucked in a shopping center called Aspen Square. This place is usually packed around lunchtime, the walls filled w/ UT Vol memorabilia, you get a homey comfy welcoming vibe from the moment you walk in. One of the owners Johnny usually mans the counter, with his surfer look and his Greek heritage, he's sure to make you smile. You order at the counter, then when they have your food ready they call out what you ordered, then you pay when you finish eating. The things I love here are: Vol Cheeseburger Special, Steak in a Sack, Hoagie, Philly Cheesesteak, Onion Rings & I always get extra pickles! I love this place and have loved Sam & Andy's since I was a kid. If you find yourself in the Farragut area and are craving a sandwich, go check them out, it's 100% worth it, and you may have to take half of your food home like I do sometimes. Pretty darn disappointed. We came in tonight for dinner. Last time we tried to come in during normal business hours we were told they were closing early due to staff. We knew it was hard so we came back another night. They had a ton of dirty tables and everyone was really rude. They essentially ignored us when we came in. They helped the 4 people in front of us, looked at us and walked away. Three times, three different employees. Not a single one even said hi. We stood there for a while at the counter trying to place an order. They just ignored us. A line of 4 other groups built behind us. We finally left. We figured this was their second chance anyways so we'd go somewhere else. I understand they're busy and understaffed, but at least acknowledge me and say you'll be with me. I had a doctors appointment out in Farragut this past Thursday and decided to dive into this place for lunch. What a fabulous choice I made, I felt at home from the second I walked thru the doors. The walls are filled with UT memorabilia, and you will see one color stand out here, Orange. The home of the Vol Burger they say, so why try anything other than the Vol Burger. The guy behind the counter was very friendly and asked me what I would like on my burger, I decided with cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, mustard and mayo, aka loaded he called it. Seriously one of the best burgers I have ever had, juicy, tender, loaded with flavor. I will say now I know why they call it the home of the Vol Burger, because they do it right. If you are out west, then go get some food here. You won't be disappointed. They have a large assortment of sandwiches, daily specials and other items like spaghetti so I will definitely be back to try some of the other things, but it's gonna take me a minute to get past that burger, damn that thing was good. This is a typical "diner-type" place, nothing fancy. The owner working the front (who takes your order and your money) greeted us and made us feel welcomed. You order, they make it it, call your name, and you pick it up and bring your meal to you table. We shared a cheese steak and fries. You get your own fountain drinks. It took a very long time to get our meal. The Cheese steak was average. We liked their famous Vol Burger better (that we experienced at the Fountain City location).
