My wife and I have been coming here for years and we have always had a great meal. The other day me and my buddies went there to celebrate a birthday. We were seated immediately and our server Joyce, who has been there from the start came over and took our drink orders. We started out with several baskets of their fresh and warm chips with salsa which is always good. After the drinks arrived we ordered. Although it is a Tex Mex kind of place I always end up getting the gringo burger. It has always come out perfectly cooked and the fries nice and crispy. My buddy got the Burrito Del Rio which he devoured. Others in our group got the Burrito Del Rio as well. Joyce was very attentive to our needs and was accommodating. Oh Sam's. I can never say no to you. You're the perfect combination of super unhealthy food with amazingly perfect enormous drinks that keeps me coming back for more. I've probably been here a hundred times in my life. I'm required to give you 5 stars on that basis alone. You're the one I can always turn to and rely on. No matter what group of friends I'm with, you always fit in perfectly. Food: Free chips and salsa are addicting. Mix the salsa with ranch dressing for happiness in your mouth. Habanero wings. Yum. Get them. I always call them something incorrect like jalapeno wings but, the waitress will know what you mean. Pulled pork is great, and the sandwich is huge. Quesadillas are decent, though its annoying they don't come with anything. Fries are plump and crispy, never greasy. I dislike their caesar, which is hard to accomplish in my world. The dressing is overpowering and too garlicky (also hard to accomplish in my world.) As for the actual Mexican food... well I don't really like Mexican food that much so I never really order it. Drinks: Lime in the Coconut Mammoth, frozen, keep them coming. They always have something excellent on tap, it's April and they're already pouring Sam Summer. WIN. They also carry a few of the Cape Cod Beers on tap - BEACH BLONDE ALE FOREVER. Back bar vs. front bar: Depends what kind of night you're interested in. I should have known from the "Buenos Nachos" awning over the door that I would be in for a treat. In my defense it was creeping up on 5 PM and I hadn't eaten all day. I ordered the standard margarita upgrading the tequila. Ugg. Gross. I was caught making faces while drinking it. It tasted like margarita flavored syrup which I'm pretty sure it was. In any case, I've had better marg mixes from the grocery. What should have been a welcome feature, the huge glass, became a drawback due to the nastiness. But I managed. Thanks to an empty stomach the thing went to my head which I'm assuming is the only reason I finished dinner. The chips were stale (some at least) and wicked salty. The salsa was Pace I believe. Again, starving...ate them. The sweet potato fries I stole from Roomie were good but the accompanying chipotle sour cream completely missed the mark. It was plain sour cream but red. I had an enchilada and a Sam's burrito. The enchilada was incinerated under a broiler and just tasted sauce and cheese with lettuce. What happened to the tortilla I don't know. The burrito was entombed in cheese sauce and managed to be both salty and bland. When mixed with the red rice it was a'ight-ish. Obviously I didn't expect an authentic Mexican meal down the cape. However, I do expect a meal that doesn't leave me in physical pain for several hours after. In the end I really wish I had gone to The Olive Garden down the road. Ugh. Where to start? My older son wants Mexican for his birthday so we stop into Sams. Haven't been to this location before but remember Plymouth as having decent food. Mom always said, start by saying something nice. OK, our waitress was very kind and attentive. Now that we've gotten that out of the way... We got there for a late lunch/early dinner. Seeing the Buenos Nachos awning should have been a warning. I've really got to start listening to my intuition. Cheesy decor with a mixture of tacky cactus, signs and posters from old Mexican movies. Since I'm on vacation this week, Dad goes with the "Especial Margarita". My apologies for the incorrect Spanish Grammar. It was gross. The margarita mix was so freakin sweet that I couldn't taste the tequilla nor finish it. It had no backtones or fresh lime and citrus like the great ones have. Classify this under Alcohol Abuse. On to the meal. I went with the Chipotle Shreaded Chicken Burrito con Sausa Verde. I generally like my food to have some flavor. The chef here must have been going for bland and a bit of "What the bleep is the sauce?" cause he nailed it. Maybe it's just me but if you say "Chipotle" on the menu, it should have some nice smokey chili flavor yumminess. No, hear me out... you ever just look at a pile of garbage and think, "aw baby, cover that sucker in cheese and an entire shaker worth of salt, and I'll be all over it!" That's me with Sam Diego's. It's a place where you come for "Jose's Jollerin' Jalepeno Poppers with Diablo Sauce," etc. I don't think I've ever been there for a birthday, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Sam's version of the birthday song included an "arriba" or two. 9.9 It's a place where you eat way more than you should, drink waaaay more than you should, and question your life choices for the rest of the night. So why do I come crawling back, shamefaced and shifty-eyed, sometimes wearing a hat and sunglasses? Well, the portions are big and the food is consistent. Formulaic, even. You will never have an exceptionally excellent meal at Sam's. But unlikely that you will have a devastatingly terrible meal either. Any time I've gotten something not quite right, I've just kindly asked the waitress to return it to the kitchen to be nuked another 5 minutes. I mean it's not like they're making things from scratch back there, ya dig? Drinks are usually good. This is the kind of place where you can order a day-glo green beverage, served in a ridiculously shaped glass, with an entire fruit basket on top, and not feel too judged. I will say sometimes I find the liquor content is lacking. Sour mix and ice does not a margarita make. Honestly, if I want a GOOD margarita in Hyannis, I'm going to El Rodeo. Sorry Sam. Service is typical. I've had bartenders and servers who were fun and engaging. I've had ones that were downright surly. Sometimes they're really slow. Sometimes they're... not really slow. Shrug. We are not at a five-star establishment here, kids. Prices are reasonable. Location is decent. Bathrooms are clean. Overall, Sam's is NOT a place that I would bring a) anyone looking for a special experience or b) anyone who wants authentic tex-mex (honestly I don't know where they could go around here). But if someone is like, "yo, Hannah: I wanna get drunk, see sombreros on the wall, have a decent number of vegetarian options, eat my weight in melted Kraft Mexican Blend cheese, and possibly see a drunk couple get into a shouting match over a rejected credit card at the bar on a Wednesday at 4 pm? This has been a Cape Cod staple for Mexican food for decades. This is the first time I've been here for many years. It is a nice, large restaurant with cheerful Mexican decor. The lighting is dim, but not to the point that you can't see. Our server was friendly and attentive. We got our drinks right away and she put our food order in immediately. The menu has many, many choices so there's really something for everyone. Their kids' menu is also very large with Mexican and American choices. The chips and salsa came to our table immediately and they were fresh and delicious. The adults all ordered the pulled pork soft tacos and my son ordered the child's cheeseburger. The tacos came out quickly. There were two in the basket and were very filling. The pulled pork wasn't drenched in sauce and did not overpower the pork flavor. I used the sour cream that came with it sparingly because the tacos were really great without it. The child's cheeseburger is slightly smaller than a whopper and the meal comes with French fries. Let's get this out of the way first thing - while they do bill themselves as a "Mexican Cookery" this is in no way true Mexican food. I think the only way you can get more Americanized than this is to go to Taco Bell. If you are walking in looking for authentic Mexican you will be extremely disappointed. My husband and I have been stopping in here occasionally for the past 20 years. Twenty years ago I would have given this a five star review. As I've gotten older and broadened my food horizons and my taste buds have matured I need to knock this down a few stars. We stopped in recently on a Friday afternoon for lunch. There was a fairly decent lunch crowd with most partaking in the $7.75 all-you-can-eat soup, salad and taco bar. The waitress quickly brought complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were warm and the salsa was mild and a bit ketchupy. The draft beer list is decent and my husband enjoyed the Cape Cod Reds he had. The margarita list is extensive but tend towards sweet. Again, 20 years ago it was awesome, now I prefer something a little less sugary. I went with the skinny margarita and honestly it was great. Getting the skinny version really cut the sugar down. We started with the guacamole dip. If you are like me and love guacamole and are a bit of a snob about it and think table-side guacamole should be a staple in every Mexican restaurant, do yourself a huge favor and don't order this. It was definitely cut with sour cream or some other filler. My husband ordered the chicken fajitas. There was a disclaimer on the menu that they aren't served sizzling. Instead they are served on a bed of rice with lettuce, cheese, olives, and picante. Not a pepper or onion in sight. While not what you would traditionally get, he found them tasty. I ordered the California quesadilla which was filled with slices of white meat chicken, roasted red peppers, spinach and cheese. The filling was generous, but it was a bit bland. I had to use some hot sauce to jazz it up. I also ordered a cheese and onion enchilada. This is one of my guilty pleasures. I don't order it often as it is an artery-clogging gooey, cheesy puddle on a plate. It is probably the most unhealthy thing on the menu, but I love it. Overall it was a decent meal. There are better meals to be had on the Cape, but you could also do worse, just realize what you are getting when you walk in the door. There is no authentic Mexican to be had here. read more

I have driven by Sam Diego's For years and finally got The chance to try it. I wish I kept driving. We sat outside which was a nice seating area. My fiancé ordered fajitas and I ordered the veggie bean burrito and side salad. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they did not use chicken broth in their Spanish rice as many other Mexican places do. The salad was very fresh. The meat for my fiancé's fajitas was very dry. And my burrito had nothing but beans in it. There was no lettuce or tomato in it. It was extremely bland. It would've benefited from having rice, lettuce, peppers or tomatoes in it. It literally was mushy and bland. It also was too big to pick up to eat and you almost needed a spoon to eat it. I've gotten bean burritos at many restaurants but I've never had one as bland as this. They really had no other option on the menu for vegetarians But usually as long as there's one I'm OK. as for the queer-o-meter, this place did great! a solid 10. All the staff is great, friendly and attentive. Sadly, that's where it ends. I was going to get a fajita, but oddly, they do it "Sam's way" which means no peppers and onions. uh... so... uh... what?!?!?! so its chicken and rice served with tortillas. That's not a fajita. I opted for the taco bar instead and my wife for a bunch of sides since she's vegetarian and nothing was really a good veggie option. The taco bar is very difficult to maneuver around without contorting your arm in unnatural ways. Not to mention it lessed than "wow"ed me. The most "wow" was the fresh steamed broccoli. seriously, it was bright green, steamed perfectly and yummy. I know. I know. "HUH??!?!!" right. I know. Chips and salsa was fine. Sam's has been there for what seems like forever. I went recently for the first time in at least a decade. If you like standard Americanized Mexican food, it's just fine. The decor reminds me of somewhere in Florida for some reason, and I guess that fits for the tourist crowd in summer. On our winter visit, there were lots of twenty-somethings in single-gender groups looking to make new friends and have some cheap drinks. The salsa was extremely mild, without any kick whatsoever. I had a cup of the green chili, and that did have some spice. Flavor was good too. My husband had some sort of wrap sandwich. It was fine. The bartenders were young, but both good. Hey, its Mexican food on Cape Cod! Yeah, not the most authentic of Tex-Mex restaurants but good food nonetheless, great service from the waiter on this slow Tuesday lunchtime. I had the pulled pork tacos (see photo). Heaping helping of delicious BBQ pulled pork on a soft tortilla and garnished with all the basic fixins. I couldn't finish the both of them. My husband and I came to Sam Diego's while we stayed in Cape Cod for my birthday. We came here for lunch on a Saturday during the off season and it wasn't terribly busy. Our waitress was not very helpful and her friendliness was sub par. I ordered the Sam's Favorite and my husband ordered the Burrito Del Rio. I had also ordered the Lime in the Coconut margarita. The drink was a bit on the bitter side but it was overall pretty good. I'd give it a 4 out of 5. Sam's Favorite had some good flavor but I think calling it authentic would be much of a stretch. Still, though, it was tasty and I would probably order it again. The only thing I didn't like was that the rice was dry and my husband agreed that his was as well in his lunch. The Burrito Del Rio had a lot of seasoned ground beef, and much more beef to beans ratio which is perfect for a burrito. Since we were visiting I am not sure if we would return, as I'd like to check other places out. However, it wasn't terrible, although I wish the service could have been better. Everything was well prepared, the rice was simply outstanding and the burrito was simply out of this world. If there was anything that was less than desired, I must say the waitress was a bit on the outside with us. 30 years I've been dining at Sam's. Never an issue 'til today. Staff is very friendly, bartenders are super, drinks are worth the money. Maybe the best baby back ribs I've ever had. Complimentary chips and salsa are a nice touch and I usually use the salsa with my entree as well. The ACE soup and taco bar on the weekdays is fabulous. A word of advice: put your taco beef in a little bowl, dish out the rest of your gear onto your plate, and assemble your delicacies back at your table. It's bad form to hold up the line while you meticulously build your creations. Also, don't forget to grab a corn muffin. The muffin recipe changes frequently and hopefully you're able to come by on coconut corn muffin day. Having dinner this afternoon (4pm, restaurant nearly empty) at the bar with my lovely bride and 20 year, 11 month old college junior son. He was quietly sipping a Pepsi when a female staff member I'd never seen before asked if he was 21. I said no, he's having a Pepsi with his parents. Not good enough. She ordered us uprooted from the bar and explained that Massachusetts law prohibits minors from sitting at a bar in a family restaurant. We relocated three entire multi-plate dinners, utensils, napkins, our chips and salsa, and three beverages a whopping eighteen inches to the table behind us. Thankfully, we were now in compliance and could breathe easy. Admittedly, I've only been a lawyer in Massachusetts for 20 years so I don't claim to know everything. Not willing to let this go without a little confirmation, I quickly researched statutory law and Massachusetts Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission regulations and was unable to come up with anything concrete. As far as I can tell, it's a restaurant management policy obviously varying by venue. And that's fine. But don't tell me it's state law when it clearly is not. We have nothing but good things to say about the bartending crew of Michelle, Mike, Cameron, Jordan, Chrissy, Charlie, and Angie and the kitchen and support staff. But it's not cool to piss off regulars who will still be putting cash in the company coffers on some snowy 9 degree nowhere Wednesday in late January. See you there next week sometime. read more

My wife and I stopped in during lunchtime as first time customers. My wife had one of their specialty drinks, and she loved it (I just went the bottled beer route). We had nachos, which had a gloppy mess of cheese on top that would have been much better had they not added cheddar cheese. Nachos just need a good Monterrey jack and maybe some pepper jack. Additionally, their salsa (if you could call it that) had no bite to it and tasted like tomato soup. I,ve been a loyal customer for years but aftee last nights treatment i will not return. I ordered a margarita and received it quickly. My wife joined and ordered the same but the bartender was too busy talking to her friends at the other side of bar. The drink sat at the service bar melting. Twelve minutes later she returned to take our order and ny wife said id like my drink first. She said, my bad and served the waters down drink. (She did comp the drink). My wife wanted to ask for it to be remade but feared another long wait. Fast forward to our card sitting on bar for 10 minutes while we had no drinks and had long ago finished our meals before she noticed. Another 10 minutes and i called across bar and said, can we just pay? Managee shows up (5 more minutes) and they are writing down our card info. I found a try this restaurant last night. We used to come here years ago and although the food wasnt stellar, it was ok and we had a good time. After last night I would never go to this restaurant again. The food was mediocre at best. I ordered a fajita and it came out fairly cold on top of a bed of rice. No sizzling pan, no veggies included.. I asked from our veggies well done and they told me that they weren't any on the plate. Whoever heard of a fajita with no veggies? I was supplied with a book one container of caramelized onions that was likely meant for a burger or something. I truly understand why my friend across this place canned Diegos. One can not help themselves from partially loving a house that offers Bahama Mamas in a glass featuring six bare boobies over three laser-etched females. Yeah, I said it because it's true. You can buy the souvenir for $5. The space feels commercial but not entirely fake. I like my jalapeno dough baked pretzel stuffed with pepper jack cheese, and felt a mild attraction to the fish taco (brilliantly fried cod with somewhat abysmal cabbage, a nondescript sauce and spicily tinctured mayo). The first thing I noticed about this restaurant is that on the inside, it looks almost exactly like Casa Guadalajara, a restaurant I've visited in Old Town in San Diego. I don't know if they're owned by the same company, but it was kind of weird. The service was very friendly, but this place gets only two stars because of the food. The salsa that came with the chips was terrible: watery and bland. I ordered the Sedona chicken burrito. The pulled chicken itself was tender and juicy, but the whole dish was almost flavorless, even with the chili con queso and pico de gallo on top. The side of rice was dry. My wife ordered one of the lunch specials (I forget which), and the cheese on top was almost burned. Also, what's with the complete absence of seafood on the menu? I've never been to a sit-down Mexican restaurant that didn't offer some kind of shrimp and/or fish dish. Since I don't eat red meat, my menu choices were limited to chicken or...chicken. Pretty disappointing. You gotta do better than this if you're going to have a name that is anyway similar to San Diego, that great SoCal bastion of delicious Mexican food. read more
