Sam woo is always a perfect and quick spot to get some good Chinese food, but this is my first time at this location and I already dislike it. I'm Cantonese from Hong Kong so I'm used to below average Asian restaurant type of service but this grumpy server that led us to our table really ruined my mood for the night: we had two young kids and while I understand not everyone is a kid person, the fact that upon being seated, he immediately took our condiment tray away and mumbled "I don't want to have to work extra!" (He assumed my kids will knock down the sauces and make him clean up) that definitely made me almost want to leave. Fortunately the other server was much nicer and more personable so we stayed. Food was below average however. (1) bitter melon beef over rice: beef is chewy, melon undercooked (2) spicy chicken: bland (3) wonton and roast duck noodle: the only normal dish. The fish maw soup had no taste. The vegetables were very bland. The portions were small. Everything was overpriced. I love the food there! Especially their 5 bbq meat that they have to offer. On that platter, it includes roast pig, roast duck, soy sauce chicken, pork and sausage. It is a little pricey but so worth it for small occasions. It even have a"to-go" area which is awesome! It would have been a 5 star had it not been for the parking issue I encountered which cost them 2 stars. I would love to return there and eat every day if it wasn't for that security officer in the parking lot on 12/26/2014 around 7pm. He was playing favoritism and saving parking spots for cars that were nowhere near and overshot parking spots during peak hour. He was pretty much telling me to get out because I'm Asian. This is not the first time. I would love to return there to enjoy Sam Woo's lovely roast pig (my favorite) and sausage (yes, I'm weird) after the parking officer is replaced. I only tried the roasted duck and the skin is not crispy at all. I would highly recommend going to the one in San Gabriel plaza. In addition, they are trying to get more money from you.The chef tried to charge me $1 more when I said I preferred to having a duck leg. Nice contemporary decor. Order the roasted duck wanton noodle. The roasted duck has skin and meat as thin as a piece of paper. Perhaps the duck was starving before it was slaughtered? There were a lot of bones on the duck. After flipping all the roast duck and inspected, I called on the waithelp and asked them show me how to eat the roast duck that are all bones. Has anyone seen a duck with 4 legs? I ordered a roast duck. The roast duck I chose was plum and freshly cooked however when I arrived home I found that there were 4 drumsticks that appeared to be from old roast ducks and so are some other pieces. Shame on them! This is a matter of principle. I like to have what I paid for. Folks there are plenty of other restaurants in the area who are doing business honestly. We have always heard great things about Sam woo. And we went to 2 different ones. Similar experience. So I'll use this review for both. Good bbq to take home. We always order roast porks and bbq pork. And both are super solid. Will definitely go back for sure. Already have. One of the biggest negative is that they don't take credit card. I don't always carry hundreds of cash on me. So it's upsetting that they don't take credit card, but then again. Nearly all the Chinese restaurant don't take credit card. When our order came, there was no separate bowl of extra noodles and our two dishes looked exactly the same, which meant the extra noodles wasn't in either dish. We've ordered this same dish before with no extra noodles and this is the same amount we got. We called the waiter over (the same guy we placed the order with- fat bald head guy with glasses) and asked whether the extra noodles will come out later. He looked at our dishes and told us it didn't look like the extra noodles were in there. He went to the back to check and later came back to tell us the extra noodles are all in there already so there won't be a separate bowl of it either. It wasn't difficult to tell how much noodles are in a dish with no soup and especially easy to when compare when there is an identical dish sitting next to it. Unconvinced that we got our extra noodles, we tried to confirm again with the waiter since he initially agreed there was none. This was his exact response: "Extra noodles are all there, what do you want me to do, get a scale to weigh it?" Needless to say, we were upset. We were hungry so we just decided to suck it up and finish the meal. In hidesight, we should have just walked out without giving this place our business, especially since we had to pay for extra noodles that we didn't receive and gotten ridiculed from the waiter. I don't know why everyone is giving such low ratings. I was so excited that a Sam Woo is so close to my house. Finally, I decided to pick up some BBQ meats on this one night that I didn't want to cook. As I entered with my 12 years old boy, the first thing he stated was, "This is the cleanest and nicest Sam Woo ever!" I agreed because it was organized with modern decor. I was impressed. Anyhow, I processed to get 1 roast duck ($18) and a pound of BBQ meat ($11), not bad. We went home to feast on this. It was the most juiciest duck I ever had. The duck skin was roasted to perfection with the right amount of herbs. My mouth was exploding with joys. Then, I tried the BBQ meat. The spices was perfect. Very very disappointed in the food portions being too small. Also when you ask for water they only give you half a cup instead of filling up the water to the top of the cup. Very stingy with water portions. The ice tea is served to the top of the glass so they are not stingy with the tea. We ordered duck with rice and told then in two Chinese languages and they brought us BBQ pork with rice instead. Very disappointed that they got our order wrong. My sister went here earlier today and bought two different BBQ porks and the it was bad choice. She brought the food home and we tried the BBQ porks. It was a a bad experience because the meats smelt so bad on both of them, it was like the meat had gone bad and they still cooked anyway. We tried one piece and spit it out right away. I like the food at the "original" place on valley in Alhambra more. However the ambience here is way better I noticed "chengdu taste" across the plaza and want to try that sometime. There are more parkin gb spots here than in the Alhambra one. Since its new, it's very clean and the decor is good. I have been to all the other locations in the SGV. If I were to get "take out only" n have my chauffeur I would go to the original spot. If I want to dine-in with friends or on a date, I would come here. The bombs: = Wonton noodles - next to Noodles in Cesar's Palace Las Vegas, wontons are the best I've had since leaving Hong Kong, but if they let bowl of noodles sit too long before bringing to my table then noodles get soggy and loses its al dente-ness. Broth is perfect, fresh, clear and not too salty. = Beef stew with turnips clay pot - couldn't leave the leftovers; so packed rest to go...did I mention I had a plane to catch? the gravy caused TSA to haul me aside for detail inspection...ugh...still, it was worth it...yum. = Minced pork with fried egg over rice...has a sweet taste from the preserved vegetables (mui choy), oh so yummy, but photo has 3 eggs; actual order only one. Other dishes on par with other good restaurants...always fresh and tasty in large portions. Service is spotty...depends on which server you get. One afternoon, either the chef or owner visited each table and inquired about how the food was...that deserves another star. Tip: go early to beat the crowd and get a parking spot.
