My favorite place for Peking duck in the SGV. I came on a weekday when it was not busy, and their Peking duck was surprisingly so good. I honestly think it was better than Sam Woo. Their family style tofu is still freaking delicious! My FIL (from Hong Kong) is a picky eater and he enjoyed the food here. I'd come for the roast meats, especially the duck. Slap it on rice with some veggies, so delicious. The soy sauce chicken is more ginger heavy than some others I've had but still yummy. I've ordered the salt & pepper wings a few times and I don't really like them, I'm not sure why I keep getting them. My experience here was pretty fun since my large group had a personal room with a karaoke machine! The rooms seem sound proof as well so no worries about singing your heart out! My group got the family meal which came with big portions and the presentation was really nice. My favorite out of the dishes were the tofu based dishes (they were sooo silky) and the meats. Majority of the meats tasted fresh and were marinated well. The restaurant is traditional, Hong Kong Cafe style decor. Service is friendly, it's run by one waiter. We ordered Hong Kong Wonton soup, which is good except the soup based is bland. House special fried crispy noodles met expectations. Pork with preserved vegetables seems a bit old. And fish fillet porridge is fish with lots of peanuts - not soft. The noodles have that addicting snap that makes you go in for more. And don't get me started on their roast duck. I absolutely adore how crispy the skin comes out. Even when ordered for take out!!! Together it's the most comforting and satisfying meal to enjoy. The broth isn't salty either and leaves a clean taste. I finished my bowl in no time. Parking is quite easy as they have a lot right next to their establishment. The owners are hard working and the best part is....the peeled fruit served at the end. Visited with a group of 10 for dinner and booked a private room. We pre-ordered the king crab, which I'd rate 5/5. It came to us with all the legs pre-cut and with vermicelli noodles. The crab was steamed perfectly and the meat was tender, garlicky, and lightly seasoned so as to not overwhelm its natural sweet flavor. I especially appreciated that it was all pre cut, since love to not have to peel my shellfish. The rest of the dishes we ordered were solid as well. We got a variety of proteins and a veggie. Overall the king crab was definitely the stand out. There is a minimum spend for the private room reservation, but if you're bringing enough people to fill the room, it shouldn't be hard to reach just by ordering normally. Ho Kee in San Gabriel has been my go-to spot for ROASTED DUCK since they opened their doors many years ago. Their duck is the best but... It's been hit or miss the past 5 years. There's no consistency in quality. Here are three key thoughts after eating almost exclusively here for years for Cantonese/HK-style casual cuisine: 1. The only things worth eating here are the roasted duck and according to family, the wonton noodle soup. When the duck is on point, the skin is firm and crisp and the meat tender and juicy. Unfortunately, sometimes the duck is bland--like someone forgot to salt it and you have to rely on the base of soy sauce. Good roasted duck should be able to stand on its own. 2. Don't order their vegetables. Just don't. Maaaybe the cold smashed cucumber appetizer is acceptable but the cooked veggies have been a miss for years no matter which ones. Plus, they're expensive. We ordered a water ong choi sauteed with garlic recently and no one wanted to eat it. I brought it home, reheated it, took one bite and spat it out. It cost $19.99-went into the trash. It had a strange chemical taste more profound than other times but that weird taste is in all their cooked veggies. The green beans are some of the worst in the SGV. 3. It hits your wallet different here when you consider the price against quality and portion size. I often walk out feeling like I spent way more than I should have. And their steamed rice is so bad--poor quality rice with a strong unwashed rice smell and taste. If you want to take a chance on having some of the best roasted duck in town, you can take a chance here. I'd get it as takeout though and make plans to get your steamed rice and any other dishes elsewhere or at home. Though some of their specials are delicious, I'd still just go elsewhere. I've moved on to get my Canto-HK food cravings fulfilled and only revisit for the roasted duck. read more

The servers are always attentive, especially since the area is not that big, which allows quick service. After countless times, I have not been disappointed with my food everytime I have been here. I personally only come for the breakfast sets and bring home a duck so I have the meals for the rest of the day. They are known in the area for their duck. Their drink sizes are huge as well. I am a big fan of the rice noodle with shrimp, aka Cheung fun. It's so hard to find some fresh ones for a decent price in today's economy. My Mom ordered the Shrimp Egg Fried Rice... tons of shrimps, but too saucy and a tad salty. I got the Dumpling Egg Noodles... dumpling was the pan fried type dumpling which was not authentic for this item IMHO and portion was too small for the price. Both items were just okay. The Ho Kee Cafe locations have made a name for themselves the last couple of years so it's been a staple in the SGV. If there is a wait outside and be sure to check in and write your name down on the clipboard once you arrive assuming that there is a wait. The waitresses team seem to be pushing certain dishes that sounded very expensive she was asking if we wanted abalone, not sure how much success she had that evening. We got a couple of dishes to share and all were really good. The coconut pudding was great as a dessert, the coconut had a very strong flavor. There is a small parking lot connected to that restaurant itself but there are limited spots. Street parking is probably the way to go for this location. read more
