Came in for dim sum but I'm not a fan. The portions were bigger but the food lacked in quality. -Chicken Feet: Needs to be cooked a bit longer. It was still a bit tough. I like my cartilage gelatinous. -Steamed Spare Ribs: Also needs to be cooked longer. The meat was very chewy and hard to get off the bone. -Shrimp with Chive Rice Roll: Came without chives. Asked about chives and was told they ran out of chives. I wish they had told us they were out of chives, we would've ordered the beef roll instead. -Sauteed Green Beans Lunch Special: Super salty. So we use to come here to the fast food, steam table section, to pick up a dish or two for dinner. Well, with the new ownership & remodel, we wanted to do our normal thing and pick up a dish for dinner. Going into the fast food section, place looked clean, staffers looked ready to serve, food looked ok. Here is where the problem starts, looking at a dish of steam chicken with mushrooms and other miscellaneous vegetables, we asked for one large order of it, the server placed two small scoops in the container and closed the box. They wanted to charge us over $12 dollars for portion size for a small child. My wife who is normally very calm & quiet, spoke out to the server in her language, "is that all we get for a large portion? ...and for that price" If she has to yell out, it has to be really bad. The chairs looked old and worn, and the overall space felt outdated. The main item I wanted to try was the dumplings, but unfortunately they were unavailable, which was a letdown. We ordered just two dishes, and the total came to $42 before tip about $50 after tip. For that price, I expected much better quality. The vegetables were plain, and the noodles were soggy. First of all, their Chinese name actually translates more to "Royal/King Horse," so "Big Ma's" feels like a pretty lazy translation. We were already a bit disappointed that they didn't have the beancurd tofu skin roll on the dim sum menu. Instead, we shared the steamed seabass, braised tofu, and BBQ pork. Unfortunately, the BBQ pork was just okay, and the braised tofu was pretty bland. The biggest issue, though, was the steamed seabass, it came out half raw! The spicy eggplant was solid as well. The complimentary soup that comes with the specials were outstanding and hearty with pork and chicken. The dim sum was good but not great. The shrimp rice noodle was ok. We had shrimp hargaw which was a bit mushy. The pork/shrimp shui mai was plump and good and the barbecue pork bun was fluffy and delicious. The customer service was outstanding! 5 stars because of the service. Food came out fresh and hot and no charge for the delicious jasmine tea. The beef was definitely tenderized with baking soda to get that soft texture, but we can tell it wasn't very high quality. The snap peas were pretty fresh, quite crunchy and enjoyable. 321. TAISHAN CAULIFLOWER STIR FRIED PORK BELLY/PRESERVED MEAT - 19.99 Good stir-fried flavor with fresh Taishan cauliflower. This was probably my favorite vegetable dish we got. We read about the limited time $3.88 dim sum from a Facebook group, so we decided to come try it out. When we got there, we realized it's not just a dim sum spot, they actually have a full menu of mostly Cantonese-style dishes. They also have lunch specials starting from $10.99. My original experience still wasn't good -- the service felt uncomfortable, the restroom soap issue should not have happened, and some of the food did not taste fresh. That said, I appreciate that the owner took the time to respond directly instead of being defensive. He acknowledged the concerns, explained that they are still working through staffing and service consistency, and seemed genuinely open to improving things. The lunch specials come with complimentary soup and rice. We were never brought soup so I had to ask for it. The soup was comforting and flavorful, not too salty. The meat in it easily fell apart and was very tender. Tried the steamed tilapia with soy sauce ($13.99), soy sauce and imperial chicken duo -whole chicken ($23.99), roast duck- half ($18.88), live lobster sautéed with ginger and scallion ($20.99/lb)- they said the smallest was 1.5 lbs they had this day- it was listed as lobster and noodles but noodles didn't come, when inquired he said it would be separate and would be an extra $5, so we added on the noodles which I thought would have been part of the dish- so the lobster noodles came out to be $36.49. We finished off the meal with one dim sum item, the egg tarts- 3 for $3.88. We didn't get any veggies this time but there wasn't any space on the table to put it anyway. Overall it was a decent meal. As for the dim sum, my favorites are the siu mai, rice roll with crueller, pan fried radish cake, salted egg yolk bao, and egg tarts. I would definitely come back for their dim sum. They also have really good tea. The interior gives an intimate feel, although smaller than other dim sum restaurants but the seating is comfortable and the manager Justin was always checking in on us to see if we needed anything :) If you want to host any family gathering or get togethers/work lunches, you can make a reservation with them to reserve a private dining room, which can fit a large group of people. I was there at around 3:30 p.m., but most of the dim sum were gone, so I only ordered their pineapple custard buns, beef ribs, and steamed pork ribs. I also ordered the 2-item rice combo plate (only $8.99). The dim sum quality was mediocre, but I liked the steamed pork ribs. The beef ribs were kinda greasy. For the 2-item rice combo plate, the taste was not bad but could be better. The price was cheap, so you get what you paid for. However, I still wanna try their other dishes and dim sum as well. The to-go service was fast and efficient, and they were very friendly. While keeping the same idea of family dine-in and a BBQ take-out restaurant, the building feels a smaller and is divided in multiple rooms. My family and I ordered five dishes: Roast Duck, Roast Pork, Green Bean Stir Fry with Steak, Spicy Salted Calamari, and Braised Pork Belly with Preserved Vegetables. Each dish was an average of $19 each. Rice was ordered and charged separately. The duck and both pork dishes were really tough to eat and overly salty. The skin on the roast pork was delicious and crispy. The calamari was a little bland with a sprinkle of seasoning similar to a tea shop's popcorn chicken. My favorite dish was the green bean stir fry. Green beans were crisp and beef was tender. The staff were attentive and all the dishes came out really quick. I visited for dim sum on a saturday morning and im really impressed with the quality of the food. The chicken feet had great flavor, which is a dish i order in every single dim sum restaurant i visit and is usually a good indicator of the restaurants food quality. The steam rice roll was very very soft. The portion size is definitely above average, a lot of places offer low prices but they noticably give you smaller portions, not so here. The value proposition is top notch. The restaurant is also probably one of the cleanest for this type of restaurant, it has an A rating, which actually a lot of dim sum restaurants usually have B ratings. The bathroom, definitely is the cleanest ive ever seen for a dim sum restaurant. The owner is an industry veteran, not just friendly, but very down to earth and approachable. A total makeover from the last restaurant. Half sit-in and half takeout, similar to Sam Woo. The place is very small and just opened, seven regular tables and two private rooms. Decor is higher class so it's a comfortable environment. Food was pretty good! The garlic shrimp ($20.99) was my favorite, genuinely big shrimps with a tasty sauce. Came with 12 pieces and a hint of wasabi, so beware if you don't like that. The veggie soup with fish balls ($16.99) was nothing really special. Light in flavor but refreshing. Sweet and sour pork ($18.99) tasted like any other, we only ordered it because they were completely sold out of their roast bbq dishes. They gave us a coconut pudding as a sweet treat. I visited Big Ma's Kitchen on Friday, 4/17 around 12:37 PM on the To-Go side and purchased four portions. I asked the middle-aged lady for soy sauce and red chili. She asked me to wait while she finished another transaction, but then helped another customer instead. I asked again, and although I spoke English, she made a face, handed me a small container of soy sauce, mumbled in another language, and turned away as if I was bothering her. Very rude and unfriendly service. I will not be returning. read more
