We recently got a reservation on a weekday night, and the place was pretty packed. This was my second time at Sam Woo Jung, and my opinion hasn't changed since my first impression - this place is good and definitely worth a try but not a place I'll be frequenting too often. The main attraction is the bulgogi jeongol, which comes in three sizes. This is a must-get if you come - the bulgogi is sweet and peppery, and a medium size is enough for two people. I also like the variety of banchan, especially the fried fish, which isn't typical in a lot of place in ktown. Aside from the bulgogi, I've tried the Kalguksu, marinated raw soy crab, and the tripe stew. They were all good, but not especially impressive. If I were to come again, I'd probably just order the bulgogi without any other dishes. The frozen persimmon was unique and I'm glad I tried it, but again nothing too special. Been wanting to try this place since it opened. Was able to get a reservation for four on a Sunday night. The place was pretty packed when I arrived. There were walk-ins trying to trickle in as well. Loved the banchan variety. Not many places serve a fried fish. There were a lot of bones, but it was still nice to have something different. I did want more perilla leaves though. There was only one piece of lettuce and once piece of perilla leaf for each person. The chestnut makgeolli is a must. Creamy and light and sweet. Such a great pairing with the food. Red shrimp pancake was pretty good. I didn't think it was anything special though. Literally just shrimp paste pan fried into a pancake. It was good, but nothing memorable. Kalguksoo was not my favorite. The noodles were too mushy. The broth could've been more flavorful as well. I would skip this dish. If it was a warmer day, I would've gotten the cold noodles. We got the 650g of bulgogi for 4 people as advised by the staff. Bulgogi was super tender. Not too sweet which is a problem I have sometimes with eating bulgogi. The pot comes with a lot of veggies and eggs that the staff cracks into as well. Super filling, and honestly felt that what we got was enough. I visited Sam Woo Jung on a Monday night and we were able to get a reservation the night before. Seems like it's an easy place to get a last minute reservation. The service is great! They are super nice and friendly. The food was delicious and I highly recommend getting their bulgogi. It definitely is on the pricey end but it was so good. 4.5 stars A friend of mine recommended that we go to one of his favorite Korean restaurants, Sam Woo Jung, for our recent group dinner. While I was not new to the Koreatown dining scene, I had never heard of the place, which was a block west of the heart of that area. Upon our arrival, we were taken to the tight upstairs dining area, where I was further surprised to discover that the restaurant was known for their "Original Seoul Style Bulgogi", a preparation of which I was not familiar. Of course, we had to order it! The massive platter showcased the marinated beef, but also included glass (sweet potato) noodles, rice cakes, and eggs, all cooking in a beef broth. It was a bit oily because of the full eggs, but was delicious and a completely new way for me to enjoy my bulgogi. In addition, our small group ordered a bunch of other items for the table to share: Pajeon (Korean scallion pancake with assorted seafood) - large, fluffy, crispy, and packed with octopus and other seafood Kimchi Mandoo (dumplings served in housemade beef bone broth) - tender, plump dumplings infused with kimchi Bossom - (slow-cooked pork belly with housemade kimchi, seafood ssamjang, and cabbage) - I did not try this, but heard it was tasty, yet very fatty Kkakdugi Fried Rice (stir-fried rice with spicy radish kimchi, pork, and seaweed) - served in a ball of tin foil, which allowed it to cook into a super flavorful blend Despite ordering all of these items and receiving the complementary banchan of grilled fish, kimchi, pickled greens, potato salad, and more, we still had to request separate side bowls of white rice. They're a heavy hitter and run Her Name is Han, which is stellar. The location is a bit out of the way, near Penn Station. We were a little bit early for our reservation and were seated immediately. Soon there was a line to get in, that only got worse as the evening progressed. The space is bare. The music is assertive. The staff were uniformly lovely- polite and helpful. We were served cold barley tea. Iced water was available. A crisp bottle of Jongro soju kicked off the evening's festivities. The food was excellent. We were started off with a solid assortment of banchan that was replenished happily. Bulgogi is the house special dish. It's made differently here, like a hot pot. It was excellent. Four of us shared the largest order. The seafood Pageon was one of the best versions that I have ever had. The marinated raw crabs were excellent and the bibimbap was very good. Being right down the street from Penn Station, Sam Woo Jung is a great place to stop by and grab an outstanding meal. The authenticity of each and every dish comes from years of generation, tracing back to the owners original recipes from their grandmother in the 60s. The service was incredible, and the servers -especially the owner- were super nice and friendly, helping out in any way possible. The abalone was probably my least favorite - the texture felt like a mushroom and it was 4 pieces for $30. The shrimp pancake was delicious and full of shrimp. The bulgogi was a little bit of a small portion but had great flavor. The permisson dessert was alright - I thought it would be a fresh fruit on top but it was a jelly-like texture that was encased in a filmy texture. The bingsoo was sweet without being too much. They're part of the group of Korean restaurants like Take31 and Her Name is Han, so if you like those spots Sam Woo Jung is definitely worth checking out. I've had the bulgogi, kimchi cold noodle, and the pajeon. The pajeon is good, but the bulgogi and kimchi noodle are next level. The bulgogi comes in a sweet soup with veggies, glass noodles, rice cakes, and an egg if you're dining in--I feel like I've never seen this presentation at other Korean restaurants and I love the novelty of it as much as the dish itself. Kimchi noodles on the other hand I've had many times but the one here still managed to blow me away, probably my favorite in the city. They run a great lunch special too, so if you work nearby and can take advantage it comes out to around $15-$20/dish. The highlights of the meal were definitely the seafood pancake and the bulgogi hotpot. My favorite drink was the soy milk cocktail, which was absolutely delicious! My friends recommended the icy persimmon, but I didn't find it particularly special. One of the things I really enjoyed here were the side dishes. Samwoojung has a great menu with lots of diverse Korean dishes to try. Their side dishes for the bulgogi including a small cooked flounder were delicious. My only critique is that the bulgogi tasted a bit too sweet in my opinion. Other than that, the meat quality and the items in the dish were great. The kimchi cold noodles were a perfect pairing with the hot bulgogi and so refreshing on a hot day. It had a good level of sourness from the kimchi and the noodles were cooked very well and not overdone. I love that there was ice in the soup that kept it cold throughout the meal. I do wish the service was a bit better. The woman working at the front of the restaurant was not very welcoming the entire time. Although away from the bustling streets of Ktown, not sure I'm loving the location, as this area gets sketchier.. but it gets a lot of foot traffic. I guess the standard amount.. which means you will need to order another dish on the side. Comes with rice and side of lettuce/perilla leaves. The flavor of the bulgolgi is sooo rich and delicious. The sauce it's marinated with is sooo good and perfect with the glass noodles and rice. I could eat this every day. 5/5 We had the cold noodles which was highly underwhelming. My Korean food snob husband declared the raw soy sauce crab as probably the best he's eaten - and this being one of his favorite dishes, he's eaten a lot both in Korea, homemade and restaurant, and all over the US, including Korean food capitals LA and Dallas. It was perfectly seasoned and balanced between sweet and salty soy with the mildest aroma of ginger - even my 5 year old was asking for more. The bulkogi was tender and I loved the mix of veggies, poached egg, noodles and rice cakes. We prefer it a tiny bit less sweet, but it was still superb. The perilla seed noodles were a refreshing finisher with chewy texture and tangy sweet nutty sauce. We were in Korea recently, and this could have easily been one of our top meals there. Service was quick and attentive, our water jug was constantly replaced. For the quality of cuisine, the price was very reasonable, especially for the soy sauce crab, which is so hard to find in restaurants. This unexpectedly became my husband's favorite meal of the trip, and he is looking forward to more meals here on future trips. read more
