Restaurant is beautiful and the outdoor seating is lovely. Make sure you sit at a table with an umbrella so the sun isn't blinding you. The flavors of each dish were incredible. Sambal is located in a great location, overlooking the Hudson River. My co-workers and I came here for lunch a little while ago and all of us ordered something off of their lunch special. I went with the Pad See Ew lunch special. It was done perfectly, with a bit of sweetness on top of the typical savoriness that comes with Thai food. The portions were very modest, but that is to be expected when ordering off of a lunch special. It was completely empty when we arrived, but there was a photographer taking photos of Sambal's menu items. Half the time it seemed the servers were more invested in catering to the photographer than to us. Food was good though. Would go back just for that. read more

My sister-in-law really wanted to order Malaysian food, so we decided to place a fairly large order for the family. It's truly unfortunate that we ordered from here. There's absolutely nothing authentic about this place. Nothing about the restaurant is remotely legit for anyone who has had real Malaysian food. The food was overly salty, mostly Thai imitation, and sorely lacking in every way! And to top it all off, We spent over $150 on several dishes and the take away cartons were half-filled. I remember coming here when Chutney Masala resided in this space. I was bummed to find out there was a change because I LOVE CM. My sadness was short-lived upon finding out that CM is still in the area and that Sambal is part of Chef Navjot's family! I saw some wonderful pictures of their new cuisine and read some great reviews that only enticed me to further investigate. Hubbs and I finally made reservations and took the twenty minute drive north to that very cool industrial brick building. The decor is exotic. The various softly lit lanterns that hang from ceiling lends to the Thai theme. The existing brick and wood was always a favourite of mine, giving that loft feel. We were greeted and seated upstairs which I was very excited about, it being the first time I ever dined up there. Our server was super friendly. I had a glass of red wine and hubbs had their, "Bangkok Mule", which disappointed me a bit when I tasted it. It's basically a Moscow Mule with a different name that would have been better had they given it an Asian/tropical identity with some pineapple juice and some muddled cilantro, Thai basil or mint. I later tried their Elephant Trail cocktail which I really liked; spicy with orange, rye and amaretto. We started out with a couple of apps, Curry Puffs and Spring Rolls. The puffs are like cute little vegetable samosa empanada pillows and the rolls were crisp and flavour-packed. For our entrées, hubbs got the Pineapple Fried Rice w/Chicken which he loved. I went with the Panang Duck which was very good, a nice curry with the sweetness of pineapple. You have a choice of the basmati that comes with the entrée or to substitute with a mixed rice. I opted for the mixed rice but I think I'll stick with basmati because is was a bit hard. All in all, it was a very good meal. I was invited here by some friends. The table was ready when we arrived so no delay in being seated. Our waiter was right there looking to take drink orders and to answer any questions we had. We ordered some appetizers to share and then mains all around. Food was solid all around but nobody had any life changing experiences here. Went to Sambal based on the reviews. It's located in the space that was occupied by Chutney Masala. Arrived at about 19:30 without a reservation & was seated immediately. The place was full. Knowing some Thai dishes, order Tom Yum soup with shrimp & Gai Pad Krapaow. The Gai Pad based on some review stating that it was very spicy. The Gai Pad had a choice of three types of rice, jasmine no charge, wild & fried with a +$4 upcharge. I was hoping that it would be spicy. I have been very disappointed with many of the local Westchester restaurants were it's indicating that the dish is spicy & then when you taste it, you go haaa? Where is the heat? The interesting thing was the table setting, fork, knife, spoon & chop sticks. Chop sticks? Generally speaking, Thai do not use chop sticks. I did use the chop sticks with the soup. Chop sticks in right hand for the shrimp & spoon in the left hand for the broth & veggies. The Tom Yum arrived and at first spoonful - oh yeah, nice heat. Hot, spicy, fragrant & flavorful with fresh crunchy vegetables. It had the salty, spicy, sour & bitter flavor. The only thing that was lacking is the sweet, like the Vietnamese sour fish soup with pineapple. I'll take this any day. Next came the Gai Pad Krapaow with a bowl of rice. It's minced chicken with various chopped vegetables - string beens, onion, pepper & Thai bird chillies. I was excited to try this. First mouth full and, and, and...slowly the mouth starts tingling...next mouth full...oh yeah nice heat, theres a party going in there - nice. A small Tom Yum was $10. Pad see ew though was 18? Should be like $3 for tea, $7-8 for a small soup and $20 for pad see ew. Portion size - on the smaller end. I left still hungry after having tea, a soup and an entree. They'd be better served increasing the price and size of the entrees and bumping down the prices for teas and soups. I wanted to give it a chance as I love Thai food and the location seemed ideal. My friends wanted to treat me to my favourite cuisine for my birthday. I suggested we go here. I am a connoisseur of Thai food. and i tell you, except for Papaya salad everything was very ordinary to actually bad. Seemed like they had recycled some food like Curry puffs and Shrimp in Pad Thai. The Manchurian dish was really bad...all soy sauce. Green curry was edible but the chicken seemed to smell bad, Pad Thai was bad with tough old shrimp. And the prices were atrocious. We had gone for lunch, and they did not even bring ii even though we had gone on a weekday at the hours publicized. when i asked for it after our appetizers that said now it was beyond 2,30.! Good thing we did not order any drinks or desserts. Bad, awful experience! I asked for the manager and they said he was not available, No wonder the restaurant was all empty except for one young couple, who probably came on a date....and were there for a view, and couldn't care about food. read more

Really delicious Thai food in a great location. We had reservations at a different restaurant in the same area, but then we saw the cool building and checked out the menu at Sambal, and made the reservation switch. Service was great, food was even better. We had the cauliflower manchurian and crispy peanut tofu to start. The tofu was my favorite and I really loved how they sort of "butterflied" it to stuff it with the sauce and peanuts. For our mains, we split the pad see ew with tofu and the pineapple fried rice. We walk in and we are waiting to be seated (party of 2) b/c they don't take reservations for party less then 6 people (Got It Understandable). The host a young female w/ glasses says.. 5 minutes. My date and I walk into the bathroom to wash our hands (Covid is Real- So Hygiene is a Must!!)come out the bathroom- to see a party of 2 get seated????????!!!!! Okay, we say nothing and we keep waiting. Another party of 2 comes and a tall male, asks us.. What are you guys waiting for? We respond, we are waiting for a table.. okay he says! Takes the other 2 people and walks them upstairs. This time I walk to the hosts table and tell her, Um we've been waiting and every party of 2 that's comes through that door gets seated?!?!! She responds.. I know I don't know why he did that. Shorty after, a female lady comes up to us (which looks like the owner) & tells us.. Don't worry we have a seat for you guys upstairs w/ a nice view.. Finally we get seated, and she wasn't lying! The view was beautiful and thats why they got 3 stars. Just ordered take out and it was really delicious! Didn't realize how far it was from us (15 mins) so assumed the food would be cold- I was wrong so first, thanks grubhub driver! We ordered Tom yum soup and pad Thai with tofu. The soup had a nice spice to it and was really flavorful. Tangy! The pad Thai was delish- I feel like I either get something too dry or way too oily when ordering this dish, and this was just perfect. Peanuts, bean sprouts and lemon on the side too. We ended up eating the entire thing in one sitting and the portion is pretty nice. They also sent a cute little dessert cup too. Pretty disappointing experience overall. I came up here from New Rochelle hoping for a nice view, good drinks, and good food. Won't be returning. Below is the breakdown. SERVICE: Waiter was a nice young guy. However, he had NO knowledge of anything on the menu. I asked him basic questions about a few dishes and he couldn't answer. For example, I asked him how the chicken was cooked in the Malay Mamak Chicken. He told me he wasn't sure but it was like fried rice. ?!?! The dish doesn't say anything about fried rice in it. Overall, the entire wait staff looked like they didn't know what they were doing or talking about. The management should train them, test their knowledge of dish meal prep, and make sure they have at least tasted some of the dishes so they can answer basic questions. FOOD: The food was one step above Chinese takeout. Yet the prices were very high for the quality. We ordered two apps, spring rolls and the the roti paratha. The spring rolls were pretty standard and the sauce for the roti tasted like it was pre-made from a can. For the main, we ordered Hakka Noodles and a curry. My friend said the curry was just ok, nothing special. The Hakka Noodles were equivalent to bad Chinese takeout lomein noodles. They were drenched in oil, the beef was over cooked, and had barely any veggies. The presentation of both dishes was also lacking. For a $21 dish, I expected a much better meal. I ate half of it as I was very hungry. After less than good meals, we opted not to waste money or calories on dessert there. DRINKS: We also ordered two mixed drinks. At $13 each, I expected a tasty mixed drink done right. But it was clear that the bar tenders had no clue as to correct proportions. I had the Golden Triangle drink. It basically tasted like a vodka and pineapple juice. There was supposed to be ginger as well, but couldn't taste it at all. My friend had the Black Lotus, which tasted like a glass of Prosecco. You could not taste the st. Germaine or the earl grey syrup. I had them remake that one and watched at the bar and they did not measure anything. Basically just poured in mostly prosecco and a little splash of the other two. These were not worth $13 each. VIEW: We sat on the deck to watch the sunset. The sunset was beautiful. However, there was no shade, umbrellas, decor, plants, or anything else on the deck. This is a big missed opportunity by the owner to create a beautiful inviting outdoor space. We sat at a small metal table with metal chairs, which were pretty uncomfortable. The four top tables had chairs that looked more comfortable, but the two top tables just had you sitting directly on metal, no cushion or anything. Overall, this place was not worth the money. We spent $91 on our food and drinks before tip, and left disappointed by the entire experience. There are many other Hudson River restaurant locales with great views that we will be trying instead. I hope the owners or management make some changes. This place has the potential to be good, but needs an overhaul in quality. read more

If Ratchanee Sumpatboon of Larb Obal fame wanted to clean up, she'd come open an Isaan restaurant in Westchester. The delivery service? Great! The food? Ok. The prices? Criminal! Since this was my first order, started with the basics. Two pad Thai entrees and two spring roll appetizers plus 20% tip came to $100. ($12 for three small spring rolls!) As you sit atop the Sambal terrace, wind whipping through your recently conditioned hair, your mind begins to drift along the Hudson. All of your fears, insecurities, and troubles wisp away in a soft breeze of temporal calm. You can live in the moment and enjoy this gosh dang Pad See Ew everyone's talking about. Chef Navjot Arora converted his Indian restaurant Chutney Masala into Sambal in 2016, moving it to Main Street and renovating the existing building for this Thai food sanctuary. Arora found the perfect muse to take the reigns of Sambal, Chef Lucky Thai, who hails from Thailand and previously owned establishments of her own in Houston and Las Vegas. This is all to say that Sambal is loaded with pedigree, a tremendous swath of experience in restauranteurship, and an unbelievable menu of straight up winners. Within this rather square building is two floors of magic. Sunsets on the aforementioned terrace wouldn't be a terrible final image to see before death (due to the terrace collapsing, which definitely won't happen according to local building inspectors). On many a night I have slid into low-key intoxication with friends and loved ones while crushing the pad see ew, which I order literally every time. Though I never order anything else, I always love reading the menu out loud, which includes dishes with the following names: -Som Tum (what I say when I need some antacids) -Tod Mun Goong (Todd Rundgren's ethnic brother) -Pla Rad Prik (something to call an annoying co-worker) -Khow Pad Poo (can't think of one for this) At any rate, Sambal is a glistening diamond of Irvington's bustling culinary scene and must be seen to be believed (but trust me, it exists). read more

Would have given 5 stars if not for one small detail! We stopped by Sambal during lunch and opted for the $12.95 lunch special. They have a huge outdoor patio so we enjoyed the view of the river and bridge midday which was a treat. I had the chicken with basil which was amazing. Very spicy, so if you can't do spice then I would see if they can do it mild. I love spice and even I was wiping my nose. My friend has the green curry which he was very pleased with. Lunch specials came with a tomato soup, which was a Thai version of the classic, and a spring roll. This was probably the best spring roll I ever had and very clearly homemade. Amazing. Why the 4 stars? I asked for brown rice, and the server said they instead have a mixed wild rice. I opted for that and they charged and added $4 per person. If I had known it would have added so much on I wouldn't have gone for it AT ALL especially since I didn't like it that much. Visited this spot Friday night. From the outside it doesn't look like much but once you enter you are transported elsewhere. The ambiance of the restaurant is calming and cozy. The servers are polite and kind to their guests. I ordered the chili basil meal with beef and sticky rice. The dish had tons of flavor including the authentic spice aspect Thai food is known for which draws you in. This place for sure satisfied my Thai craving and I would return in a heart beat the minute that craving arises again. A must try for people who love Thai food ! read more

First of all, Sambal has a prime location right over the Hudson River! Ignore the parking lot and the views of the river and the Tappan Zee Bridge are excellent and the sunset on this summer night was an absolute blessing, with the clear sky, pink, orange, purple hues plus the golden rays is simply bliss. You gotta sit out in the deck, of course, as most of the diners were. Unassuming on the outside, the interior transports you to the (Southeast Asian)Silk Road almost, with decor from all around the region. The service, I would consider slow, however this restaurant is a place to really take your time and relax so that slow service is part of that, I guess. You don't see servers rushing around in a hurry. Most guests were enjoying drinks and having conversations probably won't notice how long the food is taking but I actually thought it was taking a while. I mean the table who sat after us got their appetizer and entree together before we even got our steamed Pork Dumplings, which the server said afterward it would take 15 minutes to prepare. Wish I knew beforehand... They were good and look to be homemade, just not super outstanding. Same with the rest of the food, Green Curry with Chicken and Chicken Rendang. While they were good, they weren't giving me that ooh-ahh sensation. After the first taste, I kinda got over it. I feel like they could've done a lot better with presentation by adding garnishes, herbs, and create a more vibrant looking dish but I feel I got the short end of the stick on this. It's very pricey for not much! They seem to have an attractive drink menu but again the prices were a little too much for me, I mean I can get Thai Tea for $2.5 and Singha Beer for $4 at a regular Thai place. I normally won't pay $15+ for a cocktail either at this stage in life either... Overall, this is a great place to enjoy a nice dinner over the Hudson, great ambiance, pretty decent food but does not live up to its price. I came here on a spring evening and got to sit outside and enjoy the weather. The view from the outdoor roof/patio overlooks the Hudson River facing west. While the parking lot is between the restaurant and the water, it was still relatively quiet and had a direct view of the sunset. The servers were friendly and understanding. It was warm enough to sit outside, but there was a cold breeze during our meal. The maître d' was understanding and said it would be totally fine if we wanted to move indoors. We ended up staying outside, but it was nice to have the staff so accommodating. The portions were satisfactory, but the menu was bit expensive. It was to be expected for such a cute place on the Hudson, but I was hoping for more based on the prices. We spent about $65 for two entrees and two non-alcoholic drinks. Overall, we had a good experience here and would definitely come again. The price leans towards the expensive side, but the view, service, and food are worth it. read more

My recommendation for this place would definitely be to visit for happy hour, take advantage of the lower priced drinks, and sample some of the appetizers. The cauliflower Manchurian was really great, and the curry puffs were decent, too. I saw that another table ordered wings, which also looked really and smelled very good. The service is strange. While everyone is very nice, it seems like no one communicates with one another - members of our party had to order the same drink multiple times before it was finally brought to the table, and the same went for some food items. A few of us ordered the drunkman noodles, which says that it comes with chicken on the menu. Only one of the orders we received had chicken with it. The noodles were spicy and flavorful enough, but lacked a main ingredient. The view is really beautiful, but it can be very windy on the deck. Also - they do most of their seating upstairs, and the only restrooms are downstairs. Not sure if they have an elevator. read more

Walked in with a reservation and were told by the downstairs hostess it would be a 40 minute wait for an outdoor seat. We asked if there was a bar where we could wait at for our table. The hostess was confused and thought we wanted to go to a bar at another restaurant. At this point we almost left, but since she seemed totally confused we decided that we would try the wait since it did not seem very accurate based on the emptiness of the inside. We told her we were going to the upstairs bar to wait. After going upstairs we went to the bar with no seats and looked at the drink menu. We placed our drink order and not even 5 minutes later we were seated. Food was very good and I recommend one of the globe drinks to share. Overall a good restaurant with a nice water view.
