Can't believe this is my 3rd time visiting Ashland, and only the first time here. New Yorkers have lots of opinions about their pastrami and I must say, I truly enjoyed my Zombie Pastrami quite a lot. The meat was delicious and seasoned so well. I particularly loved the zombie slaw. Though very messy, didn't stop me from wolfing down both halves. Nice big portions and that rye bread is incredible. I was told that always check the special of the day - will keep in mind for next time! The kitchen did futz an order for one of our sandwiches, (one of our party was being difficult), but the kitchen was so nice and made a replacement sandwich in about 3 minutes, and we were ever so thankful. Wife and I stopped by on our way to California. Kind of a pain in the butt to find and not really worth it. I had a basic turkey, cheese, sourdough kind of thing. It was fine, but nothing special. Came with way way way too much lettuce, I don't know who would want that much lettuce on a sandwich. Every order comes with a bag of chips, so that's nice. Sammich is definitely worth a visit if you want a good sandwich. Their sandwiches are not the large ones (at other delis) that you can share, but also feel sick if you finish it all by yourself. Instead, they are delicious sandwiches made with good quality ingredients that leave you satisfied. I had the Shortstop. It had rare roast beef, Swiss cheese and arugula on super soft sourdough bread. I loved it! The sandwich came with a pickle spear and a bag of chips. I was really excited about this place. Cool atmosphere, good looking menu. I ordered the Tre, a "Chicago-style Italian." My husband ordered the roast beef. The Tre was so incredibly disappointing that I'd say it went beyond this--it was completely unacceptable. It came on a big fat white sub bun that needs lots of meat to substantiate its use and there were only 4 slices of thinly sliced salami, half a slice of prociutto, and one thin slice of mortadella. You couldn't taste the cheese. The textures of the meat were undetectable and all you could taste was the way, way, way too much mustard. I payed $14 for a serving of mustard-dressed lettuce on a huge white sub roll. It was disgusting. Clearly the designer of this sub has no idea what a Chicago-style--or any Italian-syle--sub is like. The delicate meats were blown out by the mustard and it felt insulting to be served such a misniscule amount of meat. The bread was a poor choice in quality--cardboardy and tasteless. Because I was so hungry and short on time, I ditched half the bun and transferred the meat to the other half--even doubling the meat didn't produce an adequate bread to meat ratio. Didn't matter since all I could tase was mustard anyway. The roast beef sandwich was better at meat to bread ratio, but there was nothing about it that stood out to make it a $14 sandwich. My husband said it was fine, totally not worth the cost, and when I tasted it the meat, to me, it had that old taste and smell that usually indicates it's time to toss it. The bread was a step above Wonder bread. I am really confused how this place earns so many stars. Very inconstant quality, I love brisket they do a good job smoking it, but don't trim off the huge fat cap. I have gotten pastrami sandwiches here where you get huge bites of fat. So today I asked for then to please try to use more leaner slices. When I got mine home I noticed less then half my bread had meat just 2 thin slices, and 3 large solid pieces of fat not attached to meat. (See photos). Got a Tre sandwich for granddaughter, it had just 1 thin slice of each. She said couldn't really taste the meat. My husband got a Ruben he said it was the best he had gotten there. I absolutely love their Vegetarian sandwich. It is big and moist and the dressing on it is delicious. The staff is always friendly. The only reason I gave this place a 4, is because of the atmosphere. It is situated in a parking lot, plus they have a big BBQ going, and the smoke sometimes drifts over to the seating area But the sandwich is worth putting up with poor atmosphere. However, they skimp on the important ingredients and load up with the cheap stuff (lettuce mostly and other cheap fillers) and overpower with sauce and the vinegar mix on the lettuce. The bread is normal sized bread-not what you would expect for a $15ish sammich. I've really tried here and wanted to make this a frequent spot, but disappointed each time.
