I really laughed reading another's review here stating "...their fries are meaty, yet perfectly crispy and golden." Oh, geez. That's a real knee-slapper! Must be an employee there planting a good review. If anything, the fries are little crinkle-cut disasters fresh out of yesterday's canola oil. Sammie's is a classics "Vienna Beef" hot dog stand guaranteed to deliver quality classics. I'm a big fan of the gyro but when I stray in the menu the hot dogs rule, burgers are juicy and mucho flavorful. Always, and I mean always get the fries as they are some of the best you'll ever have. You can't stop eating them, down to the smallest "crunchers" as we like to call them...and reluctantly share when down to the final few. read more

When you drive up to this place, you should get the idea on what your going to get. Sammie's is the modern day equivalent to the old time dinner. Nothing fancy, no frills, just warm food, severed quickly. Most of what you order will be greasy and certainly not something a health food nut would recommend. So, if your looking for a good, greasy burger, Philly or Gyro served with salty fries, then this is your place. I like going here for it does serve up good eats, in short order. read more

I have been here a number of times and have yet to be disappointed! I have had the gyro many times and it rocks!!! Their fries are the crinkle kind and delicious! Service is fast. Went during the noon rush on a Saturday, was the longest I've had to wait, however watching these folks work, they are moving! read more

The beef is really good. One thing you need to know is if you order from the catering menu is that the beef comes cold and you have to cook it. That was a shock for me as I did not want to cook after work and ordered the #2 - Beef Party Pack. My guests had to wait for me to cook it and i had to try to keep the french fries and onion rings hot. read more

I ordered 3 of something on the menu. They rung us up for one of those. So when we came back to get the other 2, they said it would just be a minute for the other 2, And it was TEN MINUTES. Sammie's is not unique if you live in the city, but for the area it's in, it is quite good. When finding a decent gyros becomes a little harder to do, Sammie's will do in a pinch. The fries were very good, the gyros very good, and the menu had anything you would want when ordering fast food. They have warranted a follow up visit from me to try some of their other selections. read more

Gyro's never gotten so better. The employees there were friendly, the food was fantastic, you get to watch the chefs cook over the counter and your food gets served as the way you want it. I even asked if I could make a gyro on burger buns and they were okay with it! They should do a gyro burger dish as an idea, I recommend it as a new gimmick ;) Trust me, Chicago can do that too. read more

I have been going here for years. Great gyros...hot dogs and burgers are good. Beef sandwich doesn't compare to portillos but not bad. Overall great food. The only exception is the pepper and egg sandwich they serve during lent. They should either take it off the menu or learn how to make a decent pepper and egg sandwich. Don't order it. read more

The food is great. Unfortunately I can only get quality customer service when Sammie himself is working. Maybe it's just me, but I notice patrons around me receive service with a smile and then some. I've watched people order before me when I was already waiting. I've also waited over 30min for a drink to be changed, only for someone to tell me there were out. I always enjoy my lunches here! Learned about Sammie's back in the days when they were grilling away at the old Lake County Fairgrounds. This little place is a classic, and the Italian beef and Chicago style hot dogs are genuine, fresh, and filling. Delicious crinkle cut fries are the best, nicely salted and served hot from the fresh oil in their fryers. Drop by, go out of your way, you will be rewarded!! read more

My 2nd time coming to this place in several years and once again Great Food! Took my daughter for the first time last night and she enjoyed the gyro and chicken wings while I enjoyed having their chicken breast sandwich & onion rings which was delicious as well. From the gyro to the burgers and all the way down to the pizza puffs, Sammie's is the great place to go if you aren't in the mood to cook or are just craving some Chicago style food. Just ordered a double burger and a gyro..The burgers were cooked to a hockey puck.Horrible..They changed the authentic onions and gyro sauce to some old thick onions and some immatation greek sauce..This place used to be good..All down hill the last year or so. For my first yelp Id like to throw props to Sammies. I travel a lot between Chicago and Gurnee; found this gem by chance rippin down 120. I put them in tier with the beefs of the old Roma's on milwaukee n the original Johnnies on North ave. The Vienna's are well Vienna's Chicago stlye can't beat it! So now I'll travel a little bit out of the way to grab lunch from them when i'm out there cause ....... face it - its hard to find true chicago style past 5mi out of the city let alone 40. read more

What is the most annoying thing that can happen when you get home after picking up a to-go order? A family member's sandwich is left out of the bag. Usually not a terribly difficult fix. But don't count on Sammie's Grayslake to make it right for you. This is my second time trying Sammie's after they completely blundered the condiments on my previous order. This is the last time they will have an opportunity too disappoint. So after getting home after picking up my to-go order my family members sandwich was left out of the bag. I checked the receipt and yes I indeed paid for the sandwich. I got on the phone to contact Sammie's hoping that they would offer someone to deliver up my food to my house. Instead there was absolutely no attempt at resolving the situation. In fact, there was no apology and the only resolution they had for me was to come back to the restaurant and pick up the remainder of my order or, they can put my name underneath the cash register so next time I come in I can get my sandwich that they left out for free ... free? Not sure how they're going to give me something for free that I already paid for. Just better off ignoring the existence of Sammie's in Grayslake. You will not be happy! read more

Ordered the gyro's plate which was quite tasty, fries aside ( tasteless, greasy & heavy). What irked me was that on a hot summer day, I wanted a nice refreshing ice tea - this was awful, & watery and I poured it out after sipping. Honestly, tea is so inexpensive, adding a little more actual tea shouldn't be too much to ask for considering the cost. read more

Sammie's is a staple in Grayslake. It's not a fancy place, but it's good old Chicago Style Sandwiches. The owners care about the customers, and they are on a first name basis with a lot of them. If you want to eat healthier, they make grilled chicken salad, grilled chicken on a pita, and turkey subs. The hot dogs are great if you want to splurge. read more
