Always love Sam's American Eatery! Had a dozen people including myself and they were as efficient, welcoming, and friendly as always. Once again, we had a performance to attend at the Orpheum, which is just the next block over, and we were able to get served, have time to socialize, and get out of there with time to spare. Everyone always loves what they order; the portions are big, so sometimes a couple of people might share something since we can't take leftovers into the theater. Sam's has no qualms about us sharing and will bring an extra plate for us. This time I ordered the breakfast burrito with a side of tater tots. It definitely did not disappoint. They brought extra salsa, which was delicious! I absolutely *love* their tater tots; crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Hasim, our waiter, is always smiling and happy and Gabby, another member of the staff, is wonderful; also always smiling and so welcoming. I love their staff!! My group and I will definitely return!! My husband and I thought we'd surprise the kiddos with a show and since we were near the Orpheum we decided to go to this place. It was an average experience. We weren't terribly hungry so we ordered mozzarella sticks, onion soup, grilled cheese, tomato soup, fish and chips. The service took awhile, they seemed busy. The outdoor picnic table they had looked and felt like it was ready to keel over. We couldn't really complain because our urgency to eat wasn't high, but our urgency to watch our show was higher. Ordered the prime rib sandwich with tater tots. Service was good and waiter was nice! I like how we sat outside too because they have an outdoor area. I was looking forward to my sandwich but it lacked flavor and wasn't hot at all. The rus was missing seasoning and my sandwich missed the horseradish sauce so I had to ask for that. How disappointing! Very dry. The bread was unremarkable. It was an ACME torpedo roll but maybe they should have used a different type of roll. I did see very minimal meat in my meal. My friends and I came here before our show at the Orpheum Theater; it was within walking distance from the theater. The restaurant was a bit busy when we visited, so we had to put our names on the waitlist. The place was also small but clean. Unfortunately, the restaurant smelled unpleasant when we entered. We eventually just got used to it that we stopped noticing the smell. I ordered Pasta Bolognese. It was okay and slightly salty. The pasta was cooked just right, and the dish had a lot of meat. The portion was generous, and the price was reasonable. The service was okay, too. Our server was nice, but he was busy with his other tables that he forgot to check in on our table after he took our orders. Lastly, I appreciate that the restaurant incorporated the names of the shows playing at the Orpheum Theater on their menu items; it was witty and fun. read more

Got the "Spicy" Rose Pasta (spicy in parenthesis because it was not hot...at all...). The noodles were fricken fantastic though - so fresh and perfectly cooked! The sauce was a standard pink sauce and was good, but don't be fooled; there's not a drop of Korean inspired flavor in this dish. That said, the noodles were good enough that I'd happily get it again and since I wasn't hungry, it was the perfect portion for me without the protein. Note that the day we came in was a Friday night before a show and they literally had ONE man working the entire front of the house - greeting, seating, taking orders, serving, busing, cleaning. At one point, he had 10+ tables and I felt stressed for him. We stil got out in decent time but don't come here if you're crunched for time unless they hire more staff. SAMS American Eatery is conveniently located right off of the BART Station as well as many performing arts theater. My friend made reservations at SAMS for a Friday night dinner. Easy check-in, great service, and speedy cooks, what more could I ask for?! The menu isn't too overwhelming with something for everyone. I opted for the steak, should've said rare but I asked for medium that looked more well. That's ok, still tasty. My friend devoured her burger. My favorites included the hummus and dessert. Came before a show at Orpheum and enjoyed the experience again! Food was generally tasty and high quality but there was a bit of a wait on service, hence the small knock. But onto the food... I went with the Warriors burger, done medium and it was done just right! The burger was juicy and just pink in the middle. The bleu cheese added funk, the arugula added a peppery bite, and the fig jam was a sweet surprise. I upgraded my fries to the duck fat fries which were also very tasty. I only wish that I could have chosen the fry cut because I personally do not like steak fries. Of my friend's dishes, I only tried the rose pappardelle. The noodle I had was al dente and the sauce was unctuous. All the other plates, though I didn't try them, all looked good too. There were minor complaints on several of the fries though. The one served with the fish and chips were cold, the waffle sweet potato fries were definitely not waffled, and the truffle parm fries seemed to end up as garlic fries. Made reservations a few days before & it was easy. I really liked the text reminder to confirm my Sat. reservation at 11:30am. Once I entered the restaurant, I could see how small the place was & so it could get crowded easily. Orders: Salmon Eggs Benedict: Perfectly cooked eggs Benedict that oozes out once cut. The salmon pieces were nicely laid on my English muffin. I also really enjoyed the salad. Whenever I see vegetables, I get excited that the meal is a well balanced plate. It is definitely a plate to re-order again. Loco Moco: This was my friend's order, so I could only give my visual opinion of the dish. It was a generous sized plate & looked very authentic to ones I've had in Hawaii. My friend devoured this dish, so I take it that it was not only satisfying but was delicious. Matcha Latte-consisted of an earthly aroma of matcha with steamed milk. Considering we weren't at a Matcha Cafe, it was enjoyable. For some reason it shows no reservations available when reserving for same day on Yelp. So I called and made a reservation for 5:30pm on a weekday. When I arrived, there were many empty tables so it's not like they were booked up. It might be a glitch. On this particular day, September 24, there was a strong odor in the dining area, similar to sewage. It was very offputting, but we just put up with it. We had ordered the Korean fish tacos, and the beef bourginon. The fish tacos were very tasty and I would get this again. It was a big portion. Probably the biggest fish tacos I've ever had. As for the beef bourginon, it is by no means authentic. It resembles a Japanese curry without the curry so just the gravy. The beef and vegetables were cubed tiny. I couldn't taste any red wine in the gravy though. It was a comforting meal. read more

I ordered the steak. I asked for medium rare. It came back rare as hell. I sent it back, they threw the whole plate in the microwave so now the steak is well done. On top of that there was zero salt on the steak. They gave us a free lava cake and ice cream in return but that doesn't take away the $35 on the terrible steak I had. The good: Staff was nice and generally attentive. Super convenient location when attending a show at Orpheum. Mushroom truffle ravioli was the best entree of three we ordered and shared, though it had no traceable truffle flavor. Grilled cheese and bisque were delicious, we shared this also as an appetizer. The not so good: the restaurant smelled bad upon entering. Like bathroom cleaner/some other unidentifiable unappealing scent. You go nose blind to it eventually, but it's a real turn off when you first enter. The beet salad was good, but basic, missing something condiment wise (salt? more flavorful dressing?), and they are not very generous with the cheese which adds so much flavor. The salmon tasted off, like it was past its prime, and was overcooked. The steak also tasted old, but was cooked nicely and the chimichurri sauce was delicious. Hey munchkins, Today I was tired after a long day of work. I felt myself adrift in a sea of fatigue. As I found myself at the end of my rope I made my way over to Sam's and boy was it worth it. I went over to the bar and the bar tender Riley is a true gem. He's very friendly and really makes you feel welcome. I got the burger and it was really good. The cheese melted in my mouth and the beef was crispy without being too well done. It has a nice local atmosphere as well that makes it feel extra cozy. Today I ordered the loco moco and stack of pancakes to share and the portion was very generous. The loco moco patty was cooked to our likening and the gravy was thick and delicious. I also appreciated that they were able to make the egg scrambled- sometimes I don't like a runny egg. The pancakes were so soft and golden brown. Came here before the showing of "book of Mormon" at the orpheum. The minute you walk in, the staff was friendly and inviting. I loved how the menu is themed on what's showing at orpheum! We ordered the charbroiled salmon, French dip sandwich (with duck fat fried). The salmon was good, but I did not feel it's the best I have had, it was on the greasy side. There was also a lot of rice, I felt it the dish may have been better with something else. The French dip with the fries were very good! The highlight was the service and the servers, they were very nice and always checking in, I would definitely consider coming here again and recommend to others read more

I've been wanting to try Sams for a long time (I used to work close by). Service was excellent, especially on a busy Saturday night. Decent enough prices, good portion sizes; location is okay, right on Market Street, so not as far as Hayes Valley since we needed a restaurant near Orpheum Theatre. My wife liked her pumpkin ravioli (sauce was a nice touch), and my salmon had a nice cook on it and wasn't dry at all, but the dish could have used a few more pieces of broccolini (we're fans of vegetables) and wasn't that much of a fan of having a creme-based sauce compared to maybe a glaze or something; rice was a large portion. Being a bit nit-picky. The terrific service keeps it at a 5 for sure. read more

Our complaint is regarding the unstableness of the table we sat around which was outside in the front of the building. It rocked back and forth like it was a sailboat on the water. We ordered a drink, appetizer of deviled eggs, followed by soup and salad, then an entree of our choosing, and to top it all off, a pecan pie with ice cream for dessert. All for only $30! Everything was delicious and cooked to perfection. I ordered the juicy salmon as my entree and it came with a creamy dressing on top. Portions were respectable and those of us who chose the pasta had enough food to save for another meal. The pecan pie was delicious, although it didn't have the homemade taste to it. For the drink, I went with the butterfly lemonade which was beautifully presented but too sugary for my liking. The interior of the restaurant was modern and chic. I will say, though, that the surrounding neighborhood is not the prettiest at night and parking took us a bit to find. read more

My partner and I came her on a whim, as I often walked by but never visited. This place is far better than you would think given the gritty area it has been in (area is improving though). My order came promptly and the food and service were both good, my partner's dish was also delicious.
