We've been trying to go to Sam's since we moved to the Miracle Mile area. We walked to the restaurant and upon entering it's like taking a step back in time. It's a tiny breakfast spot with a very "homey" feel. There are historical pictures of Stockton through the decades on the wall and Sam's Cafe's has endured through it all. We ordered a couple cups of coffee, but be aware there are no flavored creamers, no non-dairy options, and no alternate forms of sugar beyond "Sweet n Low." We also ordered a few glasses of water, but they never came My wife ordered the French Toast Combo and I got the Bacon Cheddar Omelette l Our overall rating of the food was just "Meh." My wife said the French Toast was dry and lacked flavor. The bacon was burnt to a crisp, and the sausage "tasted odd." The bacon cheddar omelette was very basic, and the hash browns just tasted off, like they had been cooked on the same skillet as something else. Just didn't taste like potatoes. The toast was pretty good, but how do you mess that up? Somehow this meal set us back 40 bucks. We both left thinking that we could've cooked a way better meal at home, and it's true, my wife's breakfast cooking blows Sam's out of the water So, sadly, Sam's Cafe is added to the list of disappointing food options along Miracle Mile that are a short walk from our home, but not worth the trip. read more

My husband, daughter and I love this café! The food is amazing, the atmosphere is lovely and the service is the best I've had anywhere. My husband used to frequent here before I met him. We've been married two years now and sadly only gone a couple of times, but everytime we go, the owners remember us and they ask about things we told them from our personal lives during previous visits. They're so kind and considerate and their customer service skills are so good. Very friendly and accommodating. Eating here is like eating with family you haven't seen in a while. Since they don't have a proper waiting area, you just stand in the middle of the restaurant looking like a jackass while you wait to be seated. Ok, so we are up next and have an elderly white couple behind us....oh the elderly white folk get seated first. Ok, I'll let it slide this time given the fact I am so hungry. Oh, wait another couple gets seated before us now, too? At this point I ask the Asian waitress why others are being seated before us, and she responds "I'll be with you in a minute." I respond "Nope. No you won't." I don't think I know of any other way to give off racist vibes. This place sucks ass, I wouldn't send my dog to eat at this place. Prisons have better customer service than this place. When you come here, expect to wait a little bit because it is a small diner and it is usually packed especially in the morning. My family and I were lucky to have gotten seats within 15 minutes. The food here is good, it's a mixture of breakfast, brunch and Chinese food. I like it because it has variety. The atmosphere was cute, very quant and homey traditional feel. There is a man who sings with his guitar there daily from my understanding. I had the chicken fried steak with biscuits and baked potatoes. It was tender but it felt like more breading and batter. The potatoes are mixed with some onions and bell peppers (a little flavorless) but still good. The other dishes are pancakes (3 layers of fluffiness) and the others had seafood fried rice with 2 eggs on top. I didn't try the fried rice but it seems to be the main hit when they come here. For me, the service was not good. When I tried to order the waitresses that works there seem to be kind of pushy. Instead of suggesting it was more of a demand on what you should get. We ordered fried chicken and we didn't get the chicken until all of us finished our meals. And instead of recognizing that it's still not coming out, the waitress said "sorry but you know those take a long time". The proper way of handling this is updating us by telling us that the chicken will take the longest to cook so expect the wait. They didn't check on us, and when I asked for a refill of water she gave me a dirty cup that clearly had a soda spill on my cup. Overall, I don't think I'll be coming back here. I think the food was good, but service plays a big part on it for me personally. If you're in the area, I think this place is something you should check out despite my experience. read more

I found a very long dark hair in my strawberry waffle. I pointed it out to the waitress and she asked if I wanted a replacement, at this point I was already icked out and I declined. She said that she would remove the order from my bill, when the bill came I noticed that there was still a charge, only it was for $4.00 rather than the $8.95. The pancake was pretty cool it was a Mickey Mouse shaped design. My grandfather added some butter and poured some syrup. He enjoyed is pancake a lot. My daughter's breakfast she really loved it. She loved the eggs and hash brown and couldn't finish part of the ham. So she gave it to dear old dad LOL. The ham is really good. My omelette was pretty good. So were the country potatoes. This may be one of my favorite places in town. Sam is always friendly and once you become a regular, he may not know your name but he will ask you about school or work or the kids. All of the food is good. It's a classic diner that serves Chinese and American food for great prices. You can also order pretty much anything you want. I've been with a few smaller ones that just ramble off what they want. Without hesitation he makes it. I'm kind of picky and order a really boring chow mein. A word-- We overheard Sam stating that it hurts his feelings a bit when people add salt or soy sauce to the food without trying it. This is a common part of proper table manners but just thought I'd throw that out there. He is often the cook and your waiter, so he sees more than the typical chef. read more

I had driven past it many a time but never realized it was a Chinese-American breakfast diner (essentially Stockton's version of Harry's Cafe in Sacramento) and was excited to try it out for Sunday morning breakfast. If I had to sum up the experience in 3 words: 1) CHEAP. Prices were very reasonable; all of the breakfast items seemed to be under $10 and portions were good for the price. I ordered the scrambled eggs with hot dogs and hash browns, which also came with toast, and left feeling full and satisfied. Food was good, not holy-moly-best-I've-ever-tasted, but still good. 2) FAST, as our food came out no longer than 5-10 minutes after we ordered...dare I say possibly even faster? Definitely a great place to go if you're SUPER hungry and want some delicious breakfast ASAP! 3) FRIENDLY service - everyone was very nice and smiling from beginning to end! We were immediately acknowledged when we walked in, our booth was cleared, and someone was ready to take our orders right away even before we had the chance to peruse the menu. Doesn't get much better than that. Only downside I found was that the boyfriend's biscuits and gravy got cold VERY quickly. Being one of my favorite breakfast items, that was a little disappointing. Breakfast plates included a choice between home style potatoes or hash browns and a side of either toast or biscuit and gravy. George's Omelette Made with tomato, spinach, and mushrooms. A very healthy tasting "vegetarian" omelette that doesn't leave you a feeling of regret after eating it. 4/5 Corn Beef Hash with eggs The corn beef hash was very flavorful and not overcooked. Comparable to the quality at chucks but a little cheaper. 4/5 Hash Browns/Homestyle potatoes Both were tasty and cooked properly. The hash browns didnt taste undercooked or raw in the center like at chucks and the homestyle potatoes was a good stir fry with peppers and onions. I would recommend the homestyle versus the hash browns. 4/5 Toast/Biscuits and Gravy Average but you cant really go wrong with biscuits and gravy! 3/5 Total came out to be $14 after tax and before tip. Overall, I would recommend this place to others at least for the breakfast items. The prices are a little cheaper than chucks and it does not seem you would have to wait for a table. It's a small place with street parking and we were lucky enough to sit in an outside table. It a nice small family-owned business where the staff and kitchen are dedicated to providing quality service and food. This place is a good example of why one should not lower their expectation for simple American breakfast. They do breakfast right. We got: Country fried steak and soft scrambled (eggs were more on the medium side but no biggie) Corned beef hash and eggs (It's not on the written menu but it's a daily special) You can get biscuits and gravy instead of toast which is a nice surprise. Like Sam's Country Potatoes... Thinly sliced unskinned Potatoes fried with Bell Peppers and Yellow Onions. As I was consuming my meal, I was thinking that today's Breakfast was awfully big... or was it my imagination? Asked Sam if the portion sizes were increased... "No", he said. I was looking at some of the Breakfast plates coming out through the Kitchen Pass-Through and all of them were smaller than what I got. Iced Tea (*** 1/2) Unlimited Refills! Total: $8.48 (including tax). Value (**** 1/2) Sam's Cafe is slowly approaching the classification of a 5-Star restaurant. Why? Affordability. I have been coming here for years and this place has consistently delivered each and every time if I dine in or take out. Sam is "old school" he believes in keeping the customer happy, he will make anything you want the way you want it. Not too many places around here in Stockton that you just invent what you want to eat thats not on the menu and tell the chef to cook it up and he does. And it comes out great!
