Been going to this place for years now and every time I've been pleased but today I was highly disappointed with the service. So disappointing! I ordered the vegetarian omelette I asked about that biscuit and gravy Thats one option that comes on the side of the Vegetarian omelette with two sides of pancakes for my daughter and I to share. I asked About the biscuits and gravy that comes as an option on the side she told me that It had bacon in it. I then told her oh no we don't eat bacon it's against our religion. The food came on time and everything like usual, I split the food in half with my kid and I started eating my food. As I was eating I stopped and I asked myself why am I tasting meat in this vegetarian omelette?? Then I started Picking at my food to see a chunks of bacon and Little pieces in my VEGETARIAN omelette. I called one of the waiters over and I explain to her that I ordered a vegetarian omelette but there's chunks of bacon in here. She then asked if I wanted to order something different but I was scared after that because I can't eat bacon cause of my religion and I wasn't going to risk having that accident happen again because clearly they're cooking everything all together on the same stove! There's no designated area that meat doesn't touch! I told her no and she left and never came back. I then approached the cash register to pay irritated that the lady never came back to fix their mistakes, and i mentioned it again And I brought both plates of food to show them the bacon. I asked to speak to Sam the owner as he was in the kitchen cooking and I showed him the plate and he said that he "doesn't put bacon in his country potatoes" but clearly there was!! ‍ The whole situation was totally unprofessional and they only took off $3 of my meal that we didn't/couldn't even eat!! Coffee was okay; They don't have half-and-half but the server kept my cup full. My brother enjoyed his skillet and I believe he ordered an english muffin with his breakfast. $15 I think for two breakfasts and one coffee. Great deal! I've also ordered the Eggs Benedict and it was okay. The potatoes were cold, the ham was the cheapest ham available, and the sauce wasn't prepared from scratch. The eggs were poached, however, correctly. I love eggs benedict and I have to order it whenever available. Variance and quality aside, I almost always enjoy it. Over the years I've realized that it's very difficult to find a restaurant with exceptional eggs benedict. So I chalked it up to it not really being their thing as I find with most restaurants. Was exploring the Miracle Mile. Took a look at 2 Triple D locations - Gian's and Midtown Cafe - but decided to pass on them. Found Sam's by accident and an glad I did Nothing special about Sam's in terms of the quality of the food but it's typical of the Chinese American eateries that I grew up with in SF, some of which still exist. It brought back fond memories. On this occasion, I just opted for their ham & egg special for $6.50 - 2 eggs, a 2 oz piece of ham and sn English muffin plus coffee $10 including tax & tip which was fine. There are some Hawaiian inspired dishes like "wieners" ("hot dogs) over rice and spam and eggs on the menu which were intriguing. The restaurant has been open 20 years. Lots of regulars frequent the place snd the owners Sam & Mei Owyang seem to know them all by name. In any event, I consider Sam's a hidden gem. Nothing fancy about it. Just good basic American food (w/the option of some Chinese) offered at a fair price in a comfortable setting. If that's all you need, give it a try. Update: Went back about a week later for lunch to try some of their Chinese food. The Chinese menu was pretty undistinguished but they had some "see yup pai gwat" (salted black beans and pork spare ribs) and, when I asked before, they said they'd included shrimp in their won ton filling which is unusual for Americanized Chinese restaurants. Well, these dishes were pretty disappointing. The pai gwat had some salted black beans in them but it came in a thick sauce w/a lot of onions, carrots and some green peppers which is not Chinese; purely an American adaptation. Also, the won ton filling did NOT contain any shrimp; if it did, it would not have been so dense and unappealing. The broth just tasted like canned chicken broth (not pork based as are most Chinese soups) and contained a bunch of cabbage and carrots; also not very Chinese. So, while Sam's seems like a good bet for breakfast, I'd avoid the Chinese food and stick w/the burgers and sandwiches for lunch. Still a fan of Sam's in this respect. read more

Reminds me of when my grandfather used to cook breakfast for me, the taste was almost identical. I recommend this place to anyone looking for a good breakfast. We have been once for breakfast on a Sunday (why Chucks is closed on Sundays I will never understand...) and once for a good old grease ball Chinese food dinner. While I am partial to a good diner breakfast, their Chinese food isn't half bad either..and the fact that *the* Sam of Sam's cafe serves it right up himself is just icing on that small town diner feel cake. Great for take out too. Just be warned- breakfast on the weekend here can be a wait (but i love that Sam brings in all the reinforcements- looks like his kids and grandkids are all there to lend a hand.) Great breakfast at a fun little diner. I loved the red vinyl booths and the atmosphere in general. I had the chicken fried steak plate for something like $6. I got mine with eggs over easy, country potatoes, and a biscuit and gravy (all included with the plate!) The chicken fried steak was hearty and a bit peppery, the eggs were cooked perfectly, the biscuit was perfectly fluffy, and I'm always a sucker for country gravy. The interior looks like a throwback to the 1970s, sort of like the intersection of Mel's Diner meets Chinatown kitsch. It looks worn (bordering on dingy) but that's probably part of the charm. Cheap eats and quick, pleasant, personalized service is what you'll get here. His wieners and rice came with gravy and he almost had a fit. Mrs. Sam came over and he expressed his displeasure as he wanted a plain ol' plate without the trimmings. Without batting an eyelash, she went ahead and got him what he wanted. He was happy. I had a chicken/veggie/rice plate that was quite bland but I did ask for no salt. It hit the spot. A cup of coffee, again and again, I'll never see the bottom of this Garfield mug. Sam's Caf is a greasy spoon. I have never had the Chinese food there, only breakfast. It is really popular and can be packed in the late morning (9am+, especially after church). Friendly service that hustles, you feel taken care of. The restaurant is small, so when it is flying, you can be in and out under a half an hour. Sam actually is the cook, and he knows how to make an American breakfast. The portions aren't monstrosities, and the pancakes do come in the shape Mickey Mouse, which made me smile the first time I had pancakes. The prices are reasonable and given the comparison to Denny's I would say Sam's is better, minus the fact it's not open 24 hours a day, Denny's trumps Sam's there. I've finally decided to come to this place after driving past it for years. On the outside it looked like any other cafe, but I was really craving for some breakfast. I must say that this place is very underrated. I ordered the corn beef hash to go, and it was only $6.75 and the portions are above average. Not only was it cheap but it was really tasty. One of the better corn beef hashes I've had. Also their biscuits and gravy has bits of bacon in the gravy I think, which also gave it a nice touch. When I came in to pay for my food, I was greeted by a very friendly staff, and the decor was like a small, quaint diner. In all, I would definitely come here again.
