Ordered pick up to bring a couple dozen assorted donuts for our staff at work. The people working the counter are always so nice and prompt. Also grabbed a Vietnamese coffee for myself. This is a great local spot that is a go-to for our sweet tooth cravings. We've gotten the donuts holes (kids favorite) and the assorted dozen (im a maple raised fan) a few different times throughout the years. Was hunting for another small local donut business because my usual spot had already run out for the day (it was after 1:30pm), and this place was a pleasant surprise. I was served very quickly, and they were kind enough to give me a few complimentary donut holes even though I was only buying one donut. I got a maple donut, it was pillowy soft, moist & delicious. The glaze had a great maple flavor without being sickeningly sweet. The donut holes were a bit larger than I usually see, and had a perfect amount of glaze. My hubbie and I try to make it to Sam's donuts every Sunday morning when we do our morning rounds with our little baby. My hubbie always gets a breakfast sandwich (sausage, bacon, cheese). You can choose to have it on a croissant or a bagel. He always opts for croissant. The sandwiches are delicious, filling, and prices right. The bacon & eggs were good, but seeing the way she cooked the eggs in the microwave made the whole thing less appealing. Maybe life's got her down or maybe it was too early in the morning, whatever it is, I hope she finds a way to enjoy life more. Haven't had doughnuts since my trip w/ the kids to Universal Studios last year. I was asked to get donuts so I happily complied. The line was forming, when I left the line was near the door. I didn't really read much into everything they had to offer but I wanted a dozen and picked them out myself. She threw in like half a dozen of doughnut holes which made it an extremely sweet treat and generous regardless of the value. They had 3 types of coffee (decaf, dark, and medium roast) w/ cream and sugar on the counter. It can be a little hard to get your coffee fix here because the line will make it hard to maneuver in and out but thanks to an extremely nice clientele that morning I was able to get his decaf coffee w/ cream and sugar. The coffee is constantly being refilled. The doughnuts I tried: old fashioned and chocolate sprinkles tasted great because it wasn't overly sweet like Krispy Kreme and they weren't dry. I'm in the area visiting my mom, so stopped in for a few donuts to take home after doing some grocery shopping. It was mid-morning so perhaps a bit late as far as their normal operating hours go, but the selection of donuts was a bit disappointing. I got the last old fashioned and crullers were out, so I filled-out my half-dozen order with a few cake donuts (blueberry, chocolate w/ peanuts, coconut) and a couple of raised (plain glazed and chocolate). The woman serving added a cinnamon sugar-dusted raised donut for free. Mom still enjoyed the donuts. I also got an avocado smoothie while I was there -- not something I've had before, but decent. Good avocado flavor and slightly sweet. Shared a bit with mom -- she did not seem to care for it. I'm not sure if the reduced donut inventory is a COVID thing -- perhaps it is easier to focus the business on made-to-order breakfast sandwiches and smoothies when the world has turned upside down and patronage is uncertain -- but it was disappointing to see the focus turning away from donuts at a place where I have such good food memories. The meat content on the breakfast sandwiches weren't super great but they were still very tasty. My favorite donut is a devil's food donut and the one I had was one of my favorites thus far. Been getting a lot of relatively bland chorizo lately and this was a great change of pace. Walked in at 10am on New Year's day (thanks for being open) and I got my favorites which are glazed, chocolate glazed and creme filled and all I can say is WOW!! Each donut was fluffy, light and freshly baked with the perfect amount of sweetness. Hubby and I decided this will be our new donut shop. No more driving to Krispy Kreme at The Plant when we can support a local business. Service was friendly and quick and prices are fair based on homemade donuts. Plus the rent can't be cheap when your neighbors are Nob Hill & Starbucks. I took a star off for limited selection, but it's okay as long as what you make stays amazing and your hours! I came here at 6am on a Sunday morning, and there was a large variety of donuts in the display case. I got a crueller and a sprinkle cake donut. The donuts tasted old even though I got them super early. I've been here a few times, and the donuts never tasted fresh. I'm not a huge fan of Donuts in general, as I'd much prefer a Bagel or a Pastry, but the Missus and the boy love 'em--so guess who wins that argument? However, with that being said, it is nice to know that when I am forced to eat a donut, at least I know with SD that they'll be good ones. SD has all your usual array of doughy goodness (e.g., cake, glazed, sprinkles, crullers, etc.), but I usually stick to my "Holey Trinity" (see what I did there?) Here they are in no particular order: Apple Fritter- Sam's Fritters are always tasty, fresh and never greasy. I also like that they're flat, and almost have a crispy snap to them. They're unlike most Fritters you'll see, that are huge, greasy and not a trace of apple flavor. Sam's has actual pieces of Apple embedded in the dough--imagine that?! Chocolate Glazed- This is your quintessential donut, and is usually the 1st image that pops into my mind when someone says the word "donut." SD's rendition is tender, flaky, and always fresh. Solid choice if you can't make up your mind on what to get. Chocolate Buttermilk- The Buttermilk Bar is what many people consider the "Ultimate Donut." Cakey, moist, tangy and not heavily laden with grease--this is the true carboholics delight. SD's is not the best I've had, but it's in my Top 5 all-time. Service & Ambiance- Not much to SD, just a case full of doughnuts and a tiny table in the corner that's usually filled with old codgers telling old stories of how they used to walk to school uphill in the snow--both ways! This isn't the kind of place you just "hang out," I would say 99% of the customers just grab-and-go. I've only been served by Helen (Sam's wife), and she's always so nice and sweet --especially for the ungodly hours they must work-- and she always throws in something a little extra to help keep us carbed up! Ambiance 3*/ Service 5* Value- Standard donut pricing, I can't say if it's really cheap or expensive. I've gone in and bought a monster box to share with the boys at work for under $20, if that helps. They're also "Cash Only," so keep that in mind, but they do have an ATM available inside, if you don't mind paying fees. 4* If you're in South San Jose, and looking for some fried doughy goodness then I would say Sam's is your best bet. we have been coming to Sam's donuts for 40 years. I don't know if there was recently an owner change in the donut shop. I went in there this morning like I do at least three times a week. The lady that served me as I was picking out the four donuts normally they're small boxes this time shit the lady that serve me said no you only have four donuts so she didn't give me a box. Instead she threw all of these donuts in one bag where they're all smashed, and when I ask her for a box she says no you only order donuts and the way she turned the bag so the donuts all got smashed I said you know please give me my money back she threw the money at me and I told her have you lost your mind don't throw my money at me she ignored me when I said are you the new owner because there's always a very nice lady. If you go later in the day and she didn't answer me and there's four customers in there that I recognize these four old guys that are obnoxious loud and rude. They tell me to get out of the store I tell them to mind their business and I left the store. That's a shame, because Sam's donuts used to be a great place and I will come back later in the afternoon to see if the other young lady that has been working here for 20 years is still here. Maybe it's me not you? I went here around 12-1pm and basically everything was quite frankly sold out. There was no donuts or anything left. So what I did was try to order a bagel with cream cheese. Unfortunately the man said that he had no bagels left so I got bummed out. Instead I picked the last croissant and grabbed an orange juice. I don't know if it's me or not but I don't think the items in the refrigerator gets moved a lot because my orange juice seemed to have been stuck to the bottom of the bottle. When I started eating my croissant with cream cheese I noticed that my meal was VERY thin. (See pictures) I was disappointed with the size of the meal and wished that there was more to it but hey I love bread and cream cheese so I didn't mind too much. I found this place by accident. The dinning room is clean. The selection of doughnuts is limited, do to the small display case. I ordered a maple bar and glazed doughnut; to go. The prepare several different breakfast sandwiches. Due to the small kitchen size I am going to assume they are microwaved, and not cooked. The maple bar appeared to be of average freshness, maybe sometime within the last 24 hours? Once I bit into the bar my assumption was correct. The small donut shop in a nice plaza. I've come here a few times, and I've never been disappointed when coming here. All the donuts I've tried from here were super good (fluffy and sweet goodness)! They were never dry, and they had the right amount of glaze, filling, etc. My favorite go far has to be the blueberry donuts. I love all donuts, but occasionally, I'll have a cake donut kick, and blueberry donuts are the way to go! To top it all over, their service is nice! The last time I went was about a week ago, and my voice can get muffled when I have my mask on. With the barrier they have in the store plus the mask over my face, I'm sure it was not the easiest to understand everything I was saying, but the person working there was super patient with me!
